Dear Friends“Beyond.” It’s a powerful word, especially when applied to challenges we face as individuals, and as a community. Its meaning speaks to exceeding our perceived limitations, and surpassing our current circumstances.

In searching for a new organization tag line in conjunction with our 150th Anniversary Year celebration, we gravitated to the words

“Beyond Poverty.” These two words capture what we strive for every day at St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore: to help each person, and our community, move beyond poverty and achieve a better future.

As we close out the year-long celebration of our 150th Anniversary Year, we look beyond the immediate horizon to the important work that lies ahead for our organization. When we began in Baltimore in 1865, we were pioneers in initiating many of the first works of charity in our community. As we forge ahead into the future, we will continue to be a pioneering organization seeking new and innovative ways to help those in our community impacted by poverty in four major service areas: homelessness and supportive housing, workforce development, child and family services, and healthy food access.

In this report you will find inspiring stories about both those we serve, and those who help us advance our mission. Their successes are our successes, and we are grateful to all who make our work possible thorough their heart, sacrifice, commitment, service, and generosity.

Thank you for joining in our mission and work, and for sharing your gifts, talents, and blessings. We invite you to continue to be a part of our efforts in the years to come to help those we serve, and our community, move beyond poverty.

Sincerely yours,

John J. Schiavone President & CEO

Glenn Falcao Chair, Board of Directors

Homelessness

230Families sheltered

Beyond...927Individuals placed

in housing

More than 3,500 men, women, and children are homeless in the Baltimore area on any given night. Families who are homeless represent about one third of the homeless population and have been the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in recent years.

Minimizing the length of time individuals and families spend homeless is key to avoiding long-term, negative effects on both adults and children. For this reason, we make re-housing the central focus of all of our services for persons who are homeless.

For those who have experienced a crisis but are capable of sustaining housing, we employ best practices that involve short-term interventions that include brief shelter stays, rapid re-housing, and shelter diversion services. For those who, due to disabilities or other circumstances, need more intensive and longer-term supportive services to achieve self-sufficiency, we offer permanent housing services.

Our homeless services include the Beans & Bread day resource program, our two Sarah’s Hope family shelters, our Front Door rapid re-housing programs in the City and County, and our Home Connections and Cottage Avenue permanent housing programs. Through these programs our goal is to help each homeless individual and family address their barriers to housing, strengthen their health and well-being, and build their educational, employment, and financial assets so that they may achieve long-term

economic self-sufficiency.

Kia No one expects to be homeless. Especially someone like Kia, a single mom with three university degrees, a career pursuing her passion for teaching, and eight children with two in college. “I am definitely not a typical homeless person,” she admitted. And yet, through a series of events beyond her control, Kia found herself unemployed and her family without a home. Despite help from relatives and friends, she couldn’t make ends meet. The family simply “had to make do,” sometimes spending months living in their car or sleeping outside. Eventually, they were referred to Sarah’s Hope, Hannah More, our family shelter in Baltimore County. That has made all the difference. From the moment they walked in the door, she said, they felt they were among family. The caring and supportive staff made the children feel welcome and comfortable right away, and they helped Kia get back on her feet quickly, offering case management, job placement, employment services, and more. Within a matter of weeks, Kia was offered a teaching job, and is making plans to move into her own home again. “Sarah’s Hope is not here to give you a handout, they’re here with a helping hand, and that’s important,” she says. “They allowed me to become me again.”

$652,069 worth of emergency

food distributedHunger

Beyond...Hunger is a constant reality for anyone living in poverty. With limited income, many individuals and families must make the impossible choice between paying their rent and buying food to feed their family.

There are over 750,000 people (one in every 8) in Maryland who are food insecure, meaning they don’t have consistent access to nutritious food. Many of those people live in Baltimore City, where the food insecurity rate of 23% is by far the highest of any jurisdiction in the state. Hunger impacts a child’s ability to learn and challenges a family’s ability to thrive. Most of the clients we serve experience hunger on a frequent, if not daily basis.

A big part of the solution to hunger is increasing food access. Low-income individuals and families often need help accessing food resources and obtaining supplemental food assistance. For this reason, we offer services to meet our clients’ needs for supplemental food and meals.

Last year, we served more than 1 million meals, including daily meals at Beans & Bread and both Sarah’s Hope locations, and 8,000 meals a day that are freshly prepared and distributed by KidzTable to afterschool, childcare, and community-based programs serving low-income children throughout the region. Additionally, many of our Parish Conferences distribute food through church-based food pantries.

Clarence Could one meal change a life? Clarence Reynolds is living proof. Raised in a stable and loving family, Clarence had to become the “man of the house” while still in high school, when his father suddenly passed away. Clarence put off college so he could help support his mom and maintain their family home. Tragically, his mother became very ill, and eventually needed full-time care. After her passing, Clarence was left with a mound of bills and without his father’s pension income. Clarence eventually lost his childhood home and began to live on the streets. He lost everything — clothing, photos, money — and had given up hope on ever returning to a “normal” life. He tried finding work, but without skills he could only find low-paying, part-time work — not enough to get him back on his feet. “I was out of money. No job. No place to live. I was done,” Clarence said. “I was living on the streets and felt so alone. I didn’t talk to anyone. I was ashamed to find myself in this place.” One day, hungry and in need of a meal, he found his way to Beans & Bread. There, Clarence met with a case worker who referred him to Home Connections, our supportive housing program for adults like Clarence who have a disability and have suffered from homelessness for an extended period of time. The program provides a housing subsidy, assistance in finding housing, and services that help men and women leave homelessness behind for good. Clarence received what he needed most: “another shot at life” — in his words. “Sleeping in my new apartment was the greatest moment of my life,” he says. “It was better than hitting the lottery. This program has given me a brand new start of life.”

Childhood Poverty

Beyond...

453Homeless and low-

income children attended summer camp

Almost 14% of children in Maryland live in poverty, and in Baltimore City the rate is more than double that at 33%. Children who live in poverty are more likely not to be ready for kindergarten, and chances are they will stay behind throughout their school years. They also are more likely to have poor social skills, drop out of school, repeat a grade, perform poorly on tests, suffer from learning disabilities, and have behavioral and emotional problems.

This is the life-long, tragic impact of growing up in poverty. Furthermore, these children are likely to be poor as adults too. It’s what is known as “generational poverty,” or “the cycle of poverty. ”

To reduce poverty, we focus our energies on changing the trajectory for young children through early childhood education. Studies have demonstrated that children from low-income families who attend full-time, high-quality educational programs from infancy through age 5 have higher cognitive test scores than their peers who don’t have access to that education, are more likely to graduate from high school and college, hold a job, have higher earnings, and stay away from crime. This is why the first five years are so important in breaking the cycle of poverty.

Our services for children include our Head Start program that provides children with high quality early childhood education, Camp Discovery, an early childhood summer camp, child supportive and enrichment services at both Sarah’s Hope shelters, and Camp St. Vincent, our unique summer camp dedicated to serving homeless children.

755 Low-income families provided supportive

services Tiara and son, Quinandre Tiara, a single mother with a college degree, is determined to see that her three-year-old son, Quinandre, receives the best possible education and has a bright future that doesn’t include poverty. Tiara knew that education afforded the best opportunity for Quinandre — and her — to move beyond their life in a public housing complex. So Tiara did her homework and found our Head Start program at our Patterson Park location. Initially, Quinandre struggled to communicate and learn on his own. With the staff’s support and a specialized teaching approach, he became a more independent and confident learner. These days they live within walking distance of the Head Start program that provided Quinandre the educational boost he needed. Quinandre is attending Patterson Park Public Charter School this year. Tiara says that the Head Start program has made a big impact on her life too, by encouraging her to participate in school activities and serve on the Parents’ Committee. “When we first got here I knew right away this was the right place,” she says. “It’s what I hoped it would be, and more.”

Adenisotu Being homeless often means losing more than a place to wake up every morning and go to sleep every night. For Adenisotu, a 35-year-old Maryland native, it meant losing his sense of purpose: cooking. Having spent much of his life working in the kitchen — in restaurants serving customers, at home taking care of his mom and family, and at church functions feeding friends and community members — Adenisotu said he felt hopeless and depressed when the difficulties of life in a shelter prevented him from making meals. Fortunately, he was given a chance to return to the kitchen through Next Course, our food service training program for individuals with barriers to employment, such as homelessness. After a 15-week program, Adenisotu earned a kitchen manager certificate and found a job preparing food for families living in a local shelter. After much hard work and determination, Adenisotu is now pursuing his passion of cooking again. “St. Vincent de Paul helped me to remember who I am and what I can do. They gave me hope, purpose, guidance, leadership, and support,” he stated. “I love my job and helping others, and I feel empowered!”

Unemployment

Beyond...Many people in our community are entrenched in poverty because they have endured long term unemployment. This is often caused by barriers to employment that include a lack of work skills, low educational attainment, prior substance abuse, incarceration, a history of health problems, or mental and physical disabilities.

There are many in our community who also experience long term underemployment—where jobs obtained have wages or regular hours that are much too low to support themselves or their family. In Maryland, a person earning minimum wage would need to work 137 hours per week, or 3.4 full time jobs, in order to afford a two-bedroom unit at fair market rent.

We know that employment is essential to achieve self-sufficiency. Having a job strengthens families, provides stability, allows permanent housing to be obtained and sustained, and increases a child’s educational achievement.

To help our clients find living-wage employment we offer assessment, career counseling, tutoring, job readiness courses, skills training, referrals, and assistance in locating and applying for jobs. Our employment services include Career Connections, a drop-in employment resource program at two locations; and Next Course, a 12 week intensive food service training course that includes real food production training experience at our KidzTable kitchen.

Deborah Deborah knows first-hand the meaning of the phrase “neighbor helping neighbors.” As a single woman in her mid-50s, she has been disabled by colon cancer and other ailments for more than a year. Housebound most of the time, and with social security benefits as her only source of income, there isn’t much left each month to pay her bills, or buy food and other necessities. So Deborah is thankful that members of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference, at nearby Church of the Resurrection, generously provide food, clothing, and utility assistance, especially during the really cold winter months when bills are high. The Resurrection Conference is one of our 38 parish-based volunteer groups that serve neighbors in need in their local communities. Deborah receives the help she needs, but doesn’t feel helpless. “I am able to help myself mostly,” she said. “They help me pay a portion of my bills when I just can’t make my income stretch. And that has made the biggest impact in allowing me to live independently,” she added. “I am getting better, and I could not do this without St. Vincent de Paul. I am grateful not only for their help, but for the care and concern that they give to me.”

Holly and JacksonHolly Millman has been volunteering at Sarah’s Hope, Hannah More every other week since June 2015. She brings Jackson, a West Highland Terrier from Pets on Wheels, a non-profit organization that takes therapy animals to facilities across Maryland for friendly visits. Holly and Jackson meet and greet the children at Sarah’s Hope, play games, do crafts, and read stories. When Jackson and Holly started volunteering with Pets on Wheels, they were searching for a facility with children, specifically those who may be experiencing instability. Holly says that her visits to Sarah’s Hope help the children feel like they are more “at home” in their environment. Visiting the children at Sarah’s Hope, Hannah More is just as therapeutic for Jackson and Holly as it is for the children. Jackson knows as soon as they pull up to the building that it’s time to visit the kids. He put his ears down and starts wagging his tail. For Holly, it is a truly grounding experience, and helps put life into perspective.

“It is so heartwarming to see the staff and the volunteers come together on behalf of the families at St. Vincent de Paul. It takes only a little bit of someone’s time or money to make a difference in the lives of people who are truly in need,” said Holly.

“I only wish we had learned of the opportunity to support this tremendous non-profit sooner. It has opened my eyes to the joy and gratitude felt by those we help. Volunteering with this organization has given Jackson the opportunity to share his unconditional love and we thank you!”
