Leadership Message Goodwill of the Great Plains has made a significant impact

in the lives of thousands of people across our territory. I would like to share a few numbers with you to highlight the impact we are making.

In 2016, Goodwill of the Great Plains served 13,453 people in a variety of programs and services. The core to

Goodwill’s mission is to help people with barriers achieve self-sufficiency through employment. Job seekers secured

1,104 jobs by accessing support in our Connection Centers, located in Storm Lake, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City and through our stores in various other communities. Goodwill helps those in need through our voucher program. Through this program, 3,104 individuals received needed clothing and household items at no cost to them. Goodwill supports veterans reintegrating from the service in to employment. Our Boots to Suits for Veterans provided suitable clothing for the workplace to 397 veterans. Our participation in the Veteran Stand Down programs provided access to clothing, health care and support services to 517 veterans, many of whom were homeless.

A very special program, unique to Goodwill of the Great Plains, is our annual Shoe & Mitten Party. In 2016, 2,798 children aged five to twelve received new shoes, socks, caps, scarves and mittens in sixteen communities. Our Shoe & Mitten Party would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers, helping fit shoes and caps to children in need.

Our four Connection Centers serve as hubs for employment services to people looking for work. Services are provided free and include job search, resume writing, job interview coaching, employment fairs and ESL classes. Connection Centers had 9,092 visits by community members seeking employment resources.

There are many services that Goodwill provides and much of it occurs outside the walls of Goodwill, across the communities you live in. Goodwill provides community based vocational services, such as job coaching, to persons with barriers in businesses across our territory to hundreds of people. Goodwill is around you in more ways than your realize.

With a history of 126 years of service, Goodwill of the Great Plains will continue our mission of helping people become self-sufficient through education and employment. Your support of Goodwill is a great investment in helping your community.

“I gained so much from this program. I’m now able to go to college and further my education. I also gained confidence that I could do anything I set my mind to. I’m so excited to start my new journey.”

Goodwill Employee achieves her dream of completing high school.Last Spring, Goodwill of the Great Plains launched a pilot program, called LEAP UP, offering eligible adult employees the opportunity to complete online courses to achieve an accredited high school diploma and earn a career certificate. Michaela French, Assistant Manager, at our 3100 W 4th Street Outlet Store, jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Michaela, mother of five, was inspired to complete her high school degree after watching her three oldest children graduate and move into post-secondary education. With tremendous support from her husband, children and family, she began the rigorous online program in May of 2016. Michaela successfully achieved her accredited high school diploma on January 18th, along with a career certificate in office management.

“I gained so much from this program,” said Michaela. “I’m now able to go to college and further my education. I also gained confidence that I could do anything I set my mind to. I’m so excited to start my new journey.”

Goodwill partnered with an accredited career online high school program to bring the LEAP UP program to fruition. This program blends online course access with in-person support. Employees participating in the program are paired with a staff mentor to keep them motivated and help them overcome obstacles. In addition, each student has an academic coach through the partnership who helps the student stay on pace, discuss career goals and provides academic support.

Goodwill is an advocate for self-sufficiency through education and employment. Helping employees earn their high school diploma is key to helping them achieve higher earning potential throughout their lifetime so they may provide for their families.
