EDITORIAL

As of this writing, Illinois has been unable to pass a State budget for nearly the entirety of fiscal year 2016. What that means is that all Illinois state universities, have only received a fraction of money owed for the past year. This has placed some universities in a dire position: smaller class sizes, major cutbacks, and, in a few extreme cases, shutting their doors entirely. It is a grim situation, and their outlook is bleak.

But we are not among them.

Applications to the University of Illinois at Chicago have increased. And so have applications to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Why? In a word: stability. Our name, our affiliations, and our varied resources makes our university the most stable in Illinois. We can withstand economic buffets and shocks, even ones as large as we saw this last year. We’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again. And we’ll come out stronger on the other side. Just take a look at all we were able to accomplish this year.

• The 2016 fiscal year was marked by the continued success of our talented

ThrivingBY DEAN JERRY BAUMAN, PHARMD, FCCP, FACC

pharmacy graduates who received numerous local and national awards.

• Nearly 100 applicants secured PGY1 or 2 residencies, one of the highest in the nation.

• We remain one of the top research intensive colleges of pharmacy in the nation with our faculty reaping many accolades inside and outside of UIC.

• Our junior faculty have won UIC’s Rising Star Award 4 years in a row.

• This year Richard van Breemen was awarded Researcher of the Year at UIC.

• Our scientific contributions appeared in major publications such as Science and Nature.

• In the fall of 2016, we are implementing a new cutting edge curriculum.

• Our national rankings are a source of pride: SmartRank placed our academic programs at number 3 in the nation and more recently, the US News and

World Report ranking rose to #6 of all colleges of pharmacy in the US.

• The Rockford regional campus is poised to expand: UIC as a university has made major commitments to our regional sites throughout Illinois, in particular the multidisciplinary programs in Rockford.

This is point of transition for the pharmacy program in Rockford as the Inaugural Vice Dean, Dave Bartels, has retired and Interim Vice Dean John Nitiss is leading the campus through the process of finding a suitable replacement. Dave was the first UIC pharmacy faculty member in Rockford and instrumental in leading the creation of our regional campus there. The Rockford campus has distinguished itself in its novel rural pharmacy programs and its vibrant inter-professional educational model with medical students.

So, as you can see, the College of Pharmacy is not only alive and kicking, but thriving.

14 UIC COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

From Dean Jerry Bauman:

As a young PharmD student at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, I became interested in antiarrhythmic drugs, an interest that continued throughout my career. There I came across a research paper on a troublesome side effect of quinidine in the American Heart Journal first authored by John A. Romankiewicz, PharmD1. Really? A first author PharmD and in the American Heart Journal no less. Who was this guy? Well it was the John who also received his BS in pharmacy from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy, a few years before me and a pioneer in clinical pharmacy. Since Illinois had no post-BS PharmD program at the time, he left for Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and I went to the University of Missouri at Kansas City. For a young PharmD student like myself, to see a PharmD with common roots to my own contributing in this manner, gave me something to aspire to. I looked up to him then and this continued to his untimely death.

John (and his wonderful wife Nancy—also an alum of the UIC College of Pharmacy) were mentored by the late Herb Carlin, director of pharmacy at the University of Illinois Hospital. John was in the very first residency class at UIH and eventually followed Mr. Carlin to New York to practice clinical pharmacy before founding his own successful business. Since becoming Dean, we reconnected with John and Nancy, their loyalty to our college never wavering. We and the profession will surely miss him.

STUDENTS

I can attribute my current success to networking, both in person and on the internet.

Within the week of completing my bachelor’s degree, I was recruited through LinkedIn for my first position and exposure to the healthcare industry. I probably would have never found my passion for pharmacy if I had not taken this opportunity. Social networking sites like LinkedIn continue to connect me with current students, alumni, and pharmacy professionals. At the College of Pharmacy, each class creates a Facebook page to create an open discussion about the course material and enhance student relations. As a member of the pharmacy student council, communicating with Rockford students would be difficult without the video

conferencing the college provides and the chat features online. These resources have allowed me to get to know these students although they are miles away. As we will all be colleagues soon, it’s important to take advantage of the relationships we create during our time in school. I am sure in a few years I will have a story to tell about how a prior classmate connected me to a future career opportunity.

Direct communication has always been an asset to progressing my career and reaching my goals. By building relationships with pharmacist mentors, I have gained experience in research, received specialized hands-on training, and held a position on a national pharmacy organization committee. Developing both oral and written communication

The Value of NetworkingBY DIANA NOWICKI

skills are key for clinicians like myself. In addition to career advancement, strong communication skills are essential in earning patient’s trust and educating the public on their healthcare plans.

In advising the next generation of pharmacists, I would encourage them to leverage technology and social media to find creative new ways to advance patient care and career development. However, I feel dependence on these mediums alone would greatly limit their success. There are advantages to traditional modes of communication that should not be forgotten in this new age that help develop empathy and active listening skills.

If nothing else, let’s not lose the ability to spell without the use of a spell checker.

In the third grade a teacher submitted one of my short stories to a writing contest. The work took second place and solidified my love of the craft. Mary’s Clover is the product of two loves love of creative writing and love of public health.

Inspiration for Mary’s Clover came in my second year of pharmacy school. I attended a lecture titled, “Children, Adolescents, and Medicines”. The primary objective of the lecture was to understand factors that influence children’s behavior towards medication (e.g. cognitive stage of development, social and environmental aspects), then apply a patient-centered approach in addressing children in the appropriate use of medications. The problem is that most young children do not realize that medications are potentially harmful when used improperly. Yet, many children have access to prescription and OTC medications in the home.

Lack of basic medication awareness coupled with accessibility increases a child’s risk of medication-related poisoning. Every 48 seconds a call is made to a poison control center about a medication-related incident involving a child, and more than 70,000 emergency department visits result each year. 1,2 That’s nearly 200 children per day who require emergency medical intervention caused by medication misuse.

The “Children, Adolescents, and Medicines” lecture featured results of a small study conducted in Washington DC and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The results revealed just how little children and adolescents know about medication. The lecture felt like a call to action. During the lecture, I opened my Chromebook and wrote a quick note to myself that read, “1. Create a 15-20 minute presentation about medication safety for children for the next community outreach event; and 2. Find general medication safety books for children online.”

My online search returned very few children’s books about medication safety. So when my daughter suggested that I write a children’s book on the subject, I

accepted the challenge without hesitation. After all, who better qualified than a pharmacist (student pharmacist) to provide medication safety education to the nation’s youngest residents? Pharmacists are highly qualified, greatly accessible healthcare professionals trained in the effective use of interpersonal communication. Interventions by pharmacists reduce errors and improve safe medication practices in a variety of settings every day. Mary’s Clover would become a method for the dissemination of drug safety education to a highrisk community.

About the book publishing process. The task of bringing Mary’s Clover to fruition was difficult at times. I knew nothing about formatting, book design, publishing, or marketing. The making of Mary’s Clover was a true learning experience. The process took nine months from start to publish. The finished product looks relatively clean, but the process was a messy and arduous undertaking overflowing with failure, discovery, selfdoubt, and joy.

Mary’s Clover has been well received. One reviewer wrote, “This book offers a nonthreatening way to introduce the topic of medication safety to children...This would be an excellent book for teachers and guidance counselors to use with young students.” Mary’s Clover: A Story about Medication Safety is a recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award.

What’s next? I will continue writing. I hope to publish several children’s books about medication safety and other health topics. In July 2016, the Spanish version of Mary’s Clover, El Trébol de María, will be released.

When asked why she went into pharmacology research, Lauren Gutgesell, a PhD student in Medicinal Chemistry, gives exactly the kind of stark, pragmatic answer you expect.

“I wanted to go to med school, but I realized I could help a lot more people by working on treatments and drug research than I could with a medical degree,” Lauren said.Seconds later her sister Lisa chimes in, “And because you don’t have to deal with people!”

“Right,” Lauren adds. “No people!”

This scientific vaudeville act is something the Gutgesell sisters have been honing for years, and only recently brought to UIC. When not heckling big sister Lauren, Lisa Gutgesell does adult stem cell research at Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). She is spending the summer at the UIC College of Pharmacy working on drug resistant breast cancer as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The program aims to introduce undergraduate

students to biomedical research in order to spark interest in science as a career. However, the Gutgesell sisters knew long ago science was for them. They came by it honestly.

“Our mom has an MBA and a computer science degree,” Lauren said. “She earned her undergraduate degree in 2 ½ years while working. She’s worked for Caterpillar for 37 years.”

The pair also have an aunt who works on cloud computing for Microsoft, and

had the good fortune to have a high school physics teacher, Greg Hnilicka, who was a former Nasa engineer.

“Mr. Hnilicka was so passionate about science,” Lisa said, “he really made you feel good about science.”

The sisters, who are three years apart in age, orbited each other’s scientific interests for years. Lauren was a counselor at a summer science and engineering intensive called Operation Catapult that Lisa attended while still in high school.

Lisa competed on a robotics team and Lauren refereed their competitions. But the SURF Program is the first time they are working directly with one another, as peers. And from all accounts it is going great.

“It’s great having her here,” said Lauren.

Because the SURF Program doesn’t have a housing component, Lisa is living with Lauren. Just like old times.

Lauren adds, “I’m doing stuff in the city that I wouldn’t normally

do, like playing tour guide.”

And while Lisa is happy to get extra time with her sister as well, she’s more excited about the science.

“Dr. (Debra) Tonetti is CRAZY smart!” Lisa enthuses. “I’ve learned so much from her that I will take back to MST. She’s really given me an appreciation for the big picture and how to work independently. I know that will help me in my lab this fall.”

The best thing about working independently? No people.

One highlight of the academic year is the annual Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards (CSSLA) ceremony. Since 1973, the CSSLA ceremony has recognized outstanding student leaders and student volunteers who, while maintaining high academic achievement, demonstrate a commitment to the UIC community through participation in student organizations and campus activities and throughout the greater Chicagoland area through active service and community engagement. This year the College of Pharmacy had 17 recipients of this prestigious award. Congratulations!

Gone But Never Forgotten BY JERRY BAUMAN, DEAN

Dave Bartels and I go way back, all the way back to 1979.

For some perspective, during that time period: interest rates were 12%, gas was 86 cents per gallon, the 3 Mile Island disaster happened, 63 hostages were taken from the American Embassy in Teheran, and Karl Wallenda died falling off a tightrope. The year before, Chicago suffered perhaps its worst winter ever.

My wife Judy and I moved to Naperville from Kansas City because my wonderful wife found a job there. The first day of work I commuted by train because we only had one car. I took a bus to the train station to Union Station and then caught a bus to the College of Pharmacy. Took me about an hour and a half and the earliest I could get there was about 7:30 or 8. Rounds on cardiology service began at 7AM.

I thought “what did I get myself into?”

I did find out there was one person who was as nutty as I—he had moved to Naperville the year before from Michigan, practiced on 7th floor in internal medicine —and his name was Dave Bartels. Anyone from Illinois is not particularly fond of someone from the University of Michigan —but what the heck I needed some other way to get to work. So I called Dave out of the blue, laid out a plan: I know since our rounds are at the same time, how about you drive us both and I pay you gas money

on a monthly basis. Although he seemed a bit hesitant, he bought it and thus we commuted together for the next 4 years in Dave’s Chrysler K-car.

Dave Bartels is an exceptional clinical pharmacist. Dave was the first PharmD in Rockford (and northern Illinois for that matter) and established the Rockford connection between the regional College of Medicine and our College of Pharmacy. He established a model clinical pharmacy

practice where there was none, which eventually led, years later to the regional pharmacy program.

Second, he is an exceptional instructor—both in patient care settings and in front of the classroom.

Third Dave is great leader. When it came time to choose an inaugural dean at our new Rockford campus it was a no brainer. I needed someone responsible, capable,

respected, and frankly someone rock solid. Of course I had someone right here—someone who had started the Rockford program to begin with.

Thank you Dave from myself as a colleague and friend for 37 years. Thank you as Dean on behalf of the College for all you many, many contributions over the past 37 years.

Enjoy—but please give me your cell phone number!

Cancer biologist examines factors influencing fate of tumor cellsBY SAM HOSTETTLER

As a drama major in his first year of college, Douglas Thomas had no intention of following in his father’s footsteps. A biology course changed that.

The son of a renowned cancer epidemiologist, Thomas believed he was destined to perform on the stage. The biology course was so interesting, he left the acting program so he could devote his career to science.

“I’ve always been inquisitive in nature, and I love research,” Thomas said. “I feel I’m making a small contribution to human health.”

Thomas, a cancer biologist, and his colleagues have discovered a new role for nitric oxide, a gaseous signaling molecule crucial for intercellular communications and health. They found that nitric oxide plays an important role in epigenetics—external factors that turn genes “on” and “off.” Epigenetic changes do not directly modify gene sequences, but instead they affect how cells “read” the DNA.

Thomas, associate professor of medicinal chemistry, is the first to establish that nitric oxide determines the fate of tumor cells by controlling specific epigenetic pathways rather than through classical signaling mechanisms. While nitric oxide has been recognized as a significant contributor to cancer pathophysiology for many years, specific details to explain these associations have remained obscure. Thomas’ studies offer a unifying explanation that helps determine why nitric oxide exerts such a broad spectrum of effects on cancer etiology, both positively and negatively.

“Our next step is to learn how we can exploit these pathways in a tumor. And can we apply this information to develop novel therapeutic strategies to inhibit cancer progression?” Thomas said.

The research, Thomas said, has much broader implications than breast cancer treatment. Many other diseases that have a critical nitric oxide component may now be targeted for therapeutic gain.

Thomas is considered a pioneer in the field of nitric oxide and epigenetics. He has published numerous papers on the subject and over the past 24 months he has presented his work at meetings in England, Japan and China, as well as throughout the United States.

Since arriving at UIC eight years ago, he has been continuously funded through federal and association grants.“I am really lucky to be in the company of so many talented and world-class researchers here at UIC,” he said.

He is also considered an outstanding mentor of numerous graduate students and postdoctoral research associates, preparing the next generation of cancer biologists. While he did not become a scientist to receive accolades, Thomas said he is “humbly grateful to be the recipient of the Rising Star Award.

“I am really lucky to be in the company of so many talented and world-class researchers here at UIC. It’s really a great feeling to be recognized by your peers for your scientific contributions.”

When browsing the aisles at a health food store, Richard van Breemen doesn’t see many botanical dietary supplements that he doesn’t know about.

He doesn’t sell the products, but he studies them.

A natural products specialist, van Breemen is director of the UIC/NIH Center for Botanical Dietary Supplements Research, one of only three botanical centers supported by the National Institutes of Health. In 2015, the center received a new five-year $9 million grant to continue its research of botanical dietary supplements for women’s health. UIC’s center has had continuous NIH support since 1999.

The botanical center investigates natural cancer chemoprevention agents and the safety and efficacy of botanical dietary supplements, especially those used by women as alternatives to hormone therapy and menopause. Van Breemen uses advanced mass spectrometry to

trace the active ingredients in dietary supplements from the health food store to the bloodstream. Among the plants that have been or are currently being studied are black cohosh, red clover, chasteberry, valerian, hops, licorice and dong quai.

“The majority of drugs and supplements in use today are derived from natural products,” said van Breemen, who is also professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy. “This should come as no surprise, as nature has already preselected these substances for bioactivity.

“Now that most major pharmaceutical companies have abandoned their natural products drug discovery programs, our search for new natural pharmaceutical agents has become even more imperative.”In the United States, 20 percent of adults report using botanical dietary supplements, while in developing countries, supplements and traditional medicines are often the primary sources of health care for disease prevention and treatment.

Can natural products help prevent, treat disease?BY SAM HOSTETTLER

A pioneer in the field of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, van Breemen had little experience working with natural products until he was approached in the late 1980s by researchers asking for his assistance in identifying and measuring carotenoids, chlorophylls and phospholipids in plants and plant cells. Little did he know at the time that his career would take a different path.

“I hope that my research in natural products will benefit public health,” he said.

Through his individual and collaborative efforts, van Breemen has authored or co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and books, and has secured three patents for his work. He has also mentored 53 graduate students and 21 postdoctoral research associates.

Global impact in actionAs the College of Pharmacy continues to strengthen its portfolio of international clinical programs, the teaching and practice of clinical pharmacy is transforming worldwide. This year, faculty members witnessed the significance of that impact firsthand.

BY SAM HOSTETTLER

A growing movement in Taiwan

Bauman observed similar changes in Taiwan when he visited in November 2015.

“There is a huge movement to have pharmacists play a more clinical role in drug therapy,” Bauman says. That wasn’t the case five years ago, he adds. “Most pharmacy services, particularly in the far East and even Europe, have [historically] focused on the traditional role of the pharmacist. They see them as overseers of drug distribution.”

Credit UIC for facilitating that shift. Thanks to a generous gift from alum Jane Hsiao, the College of Pharmacy formed a collaborative relationship with National Taiwan University (NTU) in 2007 to help develop the first PharmD program in Taiwan. As part of that partnership, UIC brought 17 clinical preceptors from NTU’s hospital to the Chicago campus for a six-month training program. It also helped equip NTU faculty and pharmacists by sharing details of UIC’s curriculum and offering pharmacotherapy and clinical teaching skill workshops in Taiwan. Recently, UIC began helping the Taipei Medical University (TMU) train its clinical pharmacists/preceptors. Since 2014, 18 clinical pharmacists from three TMU-

affiliated hospitals have come to UIC for two to six months of clinical education. A faculty member from China Medical University (CMU) in Taichung first came to UIC for clinical education when she was a graduate student at NTU. She then joined CMU, came back to UIC to obtain her PhD degree and encouraged UIC to set up a summer program for pharmacy students and pharmacists. During the past four years, the program has attracted about 160 participants from UIC’s partner institutions in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Philippines and Thailand.

Providing this level of support has a lasting impact on people at the professional and personal level, explains Lau. “We are helping to advance and transform clinical pharmacy practice,” he says. “We empower people and transform people.”

Mutual benefits for the college

While the driving force behind the college’s international programs is service, UIC students and faculty also benefit from the outreach work.

For students, UIC’s presence abroad helps foster diversity in the classroom. As more pharmacists abroad have

become familiar with UIC, more have felt compelled to further their clinical competency by coming to study here. Many faculty members have also experienced professional satisfaction from participating in the international programs.

“It gives our faculty a much broader view of pharmacy practice and education around the world,” says Lau. “It helps enrich and affirm their work—it’s a very rewarding experience.”

More broadly, the programs help the college fulfill its mission of developing global pharmacy leaders. This is not an afterthought; rather, it is core to the values system of the college.

“We care for our partners,” says Lau. “We care for our profession. We are not [going overseas] to expand the footprint of our programs. We are there to help and to facilitate.”

Word has spread about the UIC College of Pharmacy at home and abroad. After decades of success with its international clinical programs, the college has developed a global reputation as a leader in clinical education and practice.

“The level of partnering we’ve done and the amount of impact we’ve had really differentiates us from other schools,” explains Marieke Schoen, vice dean and associate dean of Academic Affairs.

Indeed, few schools can rival the depth and the breadth of the college’s international programs, which include partnerships with institutions in about a dozen countries and collaborative degree programs in Malta and Hong Kong. The college’s faculty members have also traveled the world to teach, speak and consult with other pharmacy leaders, making stops in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and more.

While varied in design, these programs and partnerships are united by a common goal: to advance the teaching and practice of pharmacy, particularly in the area of clinical pharmacy. As a leader in this space, UIC works with its partners on curriculum

development, offers training programs for faculty members and practitioners, and provides relevant resources to enhance pharmacists’ affect on patient care.

These efforts are increasingly paying off. “We’ve had a very significant influence, not only on pharmacy education but on the practice of pharmacy in many different areas of the world,” says Dean Jerry Bauman. “Our impact as a college has been substantial.”

This year, Bauman and other faculty members witnessed some of that impact firsthand when they visited two regions supported by UIC —Malta and Taiwan. What they observed affirmed the power and potential of the college’s international programs.

From ‘product-oriented’ to ‘patient-oriented’

In June 2016, Bauman traveled to Malta with Schoen and Alan Lau, professor and director of International Clinical Pharmacy Education. UIC began working with Malta in 2010, when Dean Emeritus Henri Manasse orchestrated a partnership with the University of Malta to help

develop its PharmD and clinical pharmacy programs. Today, 34 students are enrolled in the university’s PharmD program.

During their two-day visit, the faculty members toured several hospitals in Malta and observed pharmacy staff using what they learned through the UIC collaboration to deliver clinical services.

“We saw pharmacists making rounds in the wards, conducting patient education, communicating with outside providers on discharge and keeping tabs on individual records,” notes Schoen. “We saw that pharmacists are much more patient-centered as opposed to merely focusing on products.”

To encourage further progress, the faculty members met with top government officials in Malta—including the President of the Republic of Malta, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties—to discuss the importance of clinical pharmacy. They also emphasized the need to support the University of Malta as it develops into a hub for clinical pharmacy education in Europe and the Middle East.

GIVING

It’s probably no surprise that when I arrived at the UIC College of Pharmacy in 2007, I knew very little about pharmacy. My focus was squarely on my job, fundraising, and, to a large degree, it still is. But in the 9 years I’ve been here I’ve met with thousands of alums, and I’ve learned a great deal about the business of pharmacy. And what I’ve realized is pharmacists don’t need philanthropy, they ARE philanthropy. Pharmacists give back daily. People who are drawn to this profession want to help, to heal, to give back in some way. I see it every day in grand gestures and a million smaller, but no less important ways.

Press releases are written when people like Herb and Carol Retzky donate the largest gift our college has ever seen to create a Philanthropic Leadership Award and now the Herb and Carol Retzky Deanship. Speeches are given about the power of an endowed deanship, and how it will help us recruit quality leadership and create change in the world of pharmacy. And rightfully so. These are milestone achievements by committed alums that will affect the college in perpetuity. They are a sea change. They divide time into before and after. They usher in a new way of doing business. Gifts of this size and impact just don’t happen that often, and so we tout them to anyone who will listen.

The unfortunate side effect is that shouting often drowns out the sound of our daily

heroes: alums who give back in so many other ways like precepting, mentoring, guest lecturing or volunteering on one of our various boards. People who give of their time and talents are the fuel that powers the College of Pharmacy on a daily basis. People like Tom Westerkamp. Tom not only did a guest lecture to the Dean’s Leadership Forum, but, spurred by a story in our alumni publication, he also rallied former ICHP Presidents to endow a scholarship for needy students at UIC College of Pharmacy.

This section of the Annual Report is our attempt to level that playing field a bit, to say thank you to all alums for their contributions of any size. Everything is listed here, from the millions of dollars to the volunteer judges. Because it all matters. It is all important. Everything you do for us makes a dramatic difference to the life of the college.

It has been an incredible 9 years here. I feel privileged to get to work with such compassionate, giving people on a daily basis. You are forever showing me new ways of giving. And for that, I thank you.

LETTER FROM ASSISTANT DEAN FOR ADVANCEMENT

Thomas Westerkamp BY GREG HOLDEN

Thomas Westerkamp (BS ‘77) donated to the College of Pharmacy because, he says, “UIC helped form the foundation for a life of learning. UIC helped me keep patients, and care for patients, at the forefront of pharmacy decision making. It helped me become the pharmacist I am today.”

He adds: “We are in a life-saving profession that focuses on helping to care for others.”

Westerkamp is personally acquainted with the life-saving potential of pharmacy. One day years ago, he was in church with his children when an elderly woman collapsed during Mass. He was a certified CPR instructor and had pharmacy experience covering “code blues” (cardiac or respiratory arrests) in the hospital. He performed CPR on the woman.

“After several minutes of chest compressions, we felt a pulse,” he recalls. “When I asked her if she could hear me, if she could squeeze my hand, and when she did, I almost fainted. I was so excited to have been in the right place at the right time. I held her hand until the paramedics took her to the hospital. But she survived. I will never forget that moment, and how my clinical experience in the ICU satellite pharmacy trained me to respond to cardiac arrest victims.”

Now Associate Director of Medical Affairs with Baxter Health Care, Westerkamp recalls learning from College of Pharmacy faculty such as Dr. Conrad Blomquist and Dr. Richard Hutchinson. “I received a good, solid pharmacy education, one that helped me get my first clinical position in critical care,” he says. “UIC helped me

keep patients, and care for patients, at the forefront of pharmacy decision making.”

He has given several times in the past and is working on an endowment “that will generate an annual gift to a needy student.”

“Many pharmacists read about alumni gift-giving and think they must be in big cushy corporate positions making tons of money to donate,” he adds. “That’s simply not true. Many smaller contributions do add up. Don’t hold back because you think, ‘I’m not a president or CEO.’ Many hands pulling in one direction can share the load. I want to help the students whose careers will follow mine, and I hope other alums feel the same.”

GIVING

Herbert Retzky has never forgotten his time as a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. A $5 million donation from he and his wife Carol’s estate will ensure his legacy of advocating for the practice of pharmacy is secured within the college in perpetuity.

The largest monetary gift in the history of the College of Pharmacy will establish the Herbert M. and Carol H. Retzky Deanship. The Oak Park, Illinois, couple has consistently supported the college since 2003, and in 2012 their financial gift created the Herbert M. and Carol H. Retzky Endowed Chair in Pharmacy Practice. The

new deanship replaces the chair position.“Herb and Carol’s vision for the role of a pharmacist aligns perfectly with the mission that has guided us since 1859,” said College of Pharmacy Dean Jerry Bauman. “It charges us to raise awareness of the role of the pharmacist within our communities and within healthcare. Their generous gift will allow us to do just that.”

It is UIC’s first named deanship and the third in the entire University of Illinois system.

The field of pharmacy has played an important part in the lives of the Retzkys.

$5 Million Dollar Gift Largest in Pharmacy College’s HistoryBY SAM HOSTETTLER

Herb was a pharmacist, while Carol was a pharmacy technician. Following a successful career as independent pharmacy owners, the Retzkys were searching for opportunities in which to make a lasting impression, and they believed the college could benefit from their good fortune.

“We wanted to provide something that extends beyond our own time here on Earth, and we found that a gift to the College of Pharmacy would seem to fulfill the ambitions we had,” Herb Retzky said. “We’re grateful that we have been given the chance to assist the college.”

UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis said, “The generosity and vision Herbert and Carol Retzky have shown by investing in the university and the College of Pharmacy with their named deanship opens an enormous opportunity to recruit a highly visible, renowned and top regarded pharmacy leader.

“This in turn will support the evolving priorities of the university: providing an exceptional student experience, serving as a magnet to recruit other world-class faculty who will blaze new trails in research and teaching, and building our national and international

reputation for research and excellence in the health and health care fields.”

The income from the pharmacy deanship will support expenditures such as salary, research, graduate students, curriculum development, scholarships, outreach, materials and more.

“All of this excellence deeply impacts the level of care we bring to the patients and communities we serve,” Bauman said. “We are deeply grateful to and inspired by Herb and Carol Retzky. Their investment will touch every corner of our college, and invigorate everything we do.”

The College of Pharmacy was founded in 1859 and joined the University of Illinois system in 1896. It is the oldest academic unit in the U. of I. system, and today includes campuses in Chicago and Rockford. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the college sixth among pharmacy schools in the nation.
