MEDICAL AND MATERIAL ASSISTANCE
SOFOSH provides assistance to the patients falling under the low income group. Help is
given to patients for the purchase of life-saving drugs which are not provided by the
hospital. Help is given for purchase of orthopedic and surgical appliances, spectacles etc.
Assistance is also given to obtain special diagnostic facilities which are not available at S.G.H.
SOFOSH helps Sassoon Hospital by contributing items like life-saving respirators, incubators
etc. Food, toys and clothes are distributed periodically to patients in need. Items like cycle-
stands, dustbins, chairs, radios, clocks, curtains etc. are also distributed as the need arises.
Though medical treatment at Sassoon General Hospital is free of cost, chronic patients incur
a heavy expense for transport to the hospital. To encourage continuation of treatment,
SOFOSH extends help for transport expenses to O.P.D. Patients.

BURNS PROJECT
A visit to the burns ward can disturb even the most emotionally strong person. It is an
extremely unpleasant sight to look at. The suffering of the patients is unimaginable. This
sorry state prompted SOFOSH to start a burn awareness and prevention project in 1985.
Sassoon hospital gets around 90 burn cases every month. Causes of burns are due to: -
Domestic accidents
Suicide attempts or Homicidal intention of the in-laws/ husband
The treatment is expensive, painful and psychologically traumatic. Besides medicines,
SOFOSH also provides prosthetic aids like collars and splints. To help provide necessary
nutrition and raise iron levels. Eggs, nutritious ladoos etc are supplied to the patients.
Material help like saris, old bed sheets, clothes for patients etc. are also provided. Other
utilities like dustbins, steel stools for relatives of patients, water purifiers and fans are also
provided for the ward.
Help given to the Burns ward in the year 2016-17.

Diabetes, also known as a silent killer is an ailment which has to be effectively managed or
else it could lead to further complications and ultimately become a life threatening situation.

THALASSEMIA DAY
The Thalassemia day was celebrated on 8thMay this year. The purpose of celebrating this day
is educating patients, their family members and the entire community as a whole about this

HIV / AIDS PROJECT
HIV/AIDS is one of the most dreaded diseases of our time, not only because no cure has
been found yet, but also due to the likely rejection by near and dear ones. In the last decade,
Sassoon General Hospital itself has experienced a quantum rise in the number of HIV
positive patients. Even the smallest of efforts in the field of HIV/AIDS will go a long way in
preventing the spread of the disease. In response to the request of the H.O.D. of Medicine,
SOFOSH initiated the HIV/AIDS project in July 1995.

Play house for Pediatric patients- SUNSHINE
To bring a little brightness to the lives of indoor patients, SOFOSH has a daily activity of a fully equipped playhouse by the name “SUNSHINE” at the pediatric ward. Play occupies a central role in a child’s life. Its absence hampers development and creativity of the child. The children admitted in the pediatric ward lighten their strain through the recreational activity and toy bank. Children overcome their stress, relax and enjoy this much needed activity which promotes fast recovery. More than 500 pediatric patients have taken the benefit of this activity this year. The SUNSHINE playhouse has Clay, Drawing material, Kitchen sets, Dolls, Blocks and Jig-saw puzzles. There are other interesting toys and library with children’s books. A counselor interacts with children and their parents. Information about the child’s ailment, hygiene and post hospitalization care is also given.

SHREEVATSA
Until the early seventies Sassoon General Hospital was the place for lost and found children. However, the staff at the Pediatric ward found it difficult to manage the children in addition to the regular patients. The rate of child mortality was high. It was for the protection and care of these children, that SOFOSH established Shreevatsa- the child care institution in October 1973. As per the order of Child Welfare Committee, Pune, lost and found children between the ages of a day old to six years are admitted to Shreevatsa. Unwed mothers, parents or grandparents who are unable to raise new born babies are also referred by general practitioners to SOFOSH. The unique attribute of Shreevatsa is that all the children are treated with lot of love and affection. Medical check-ups for the children are carried out regularly by specialists. The children are provided with a nutritious diet and loved by their care takers. Shreevatsa provides ample space, with plenty of light and fresh air, and a very colorful environment.

Family Preservation
Patients who are seriously ill and are unable to look after their children during
hospitalization admit them to Shreevatsa till they are able to find a relative who can
take over. The other parent is advised to visit the child every evening to ensure the
child’s safety as well as the responsibility of the parent. In case the parent/s
succumbs to a fatal condition, SOFOSH seeks to rehabilitate the children within their
own extended family network. Sponsorship aid may be provided to preserve the
birth family if required.

FOSTER CARE
Started in the year 1977, Foster Family Care is another programme which aims at
providing love and affection to children by putting them into a homely environment
conducive for their growth.
It is not always possible to provide a family atmosphere to the children hence this
programme was established. The children are put into foster for a temporary period
of time so as to experience the love of a family. The success of this experiment
reflects in the number of families offering to take care of the children. Families who
have joined this programme get deeply involved and feel empty without a foster
child. A background check of the family is done to ensure that the family is fit
enough to provide what is expected for the child. The foster mothers are imparted
necessary training and a SOFOSH supervisor monitors activities by personal visits to
the foster homes.

ADOPTION
Since the establishment of Shreevatsa the foremost concern has been rehabilitation of
children. Destitute and abandoned, these children are in dire need of a family to love and
care for them. On the other hand there are a score of childless couples who want a child of
their own. SOFOSH acts as a facilitator.

TARA SOFOSH Dhadphale Centre
Some of the children brought to Shreevatsa are mentally physically and/or medically
challenged. These children have nowhere to go. It is not possible to accommodate them at
Shreevatsa because of their condition and their need for special care.
We had a dream which was to provide a home for these children. We built a home for them
and named it SOFOSH Dhadphale Centre (TARA). It is situated on a 2 acre piece of land at
Pimpale Gurav. On the 14th of May SOFOSH Dhadphale Centre (TARA) was inaugurated by
Mr. Rahul Bajaj, an industrialist and Member of Parliament.
At present there are 30 children residing at SOFOSH Dhadphale Centre (TARA). The staff of
St. Ursula Convent looks after the children and gives them the love and affection they need.
