Chapter Activities: This year’s activities were mainly directed towards promotion of current trends of research in the field of optics and photonics. Notably, the following activities were organized for that purpose:

1. Introductory session for freshmen The session mainly focused on spreading information about SPIE, its benefits and how IISERK Chapter involved over the years. The goal was to bring in new students to participate in different chapter activities.

2. SPIE IISERK Lecture Series Talk 1: Dr Ayan Banerjee gave a popular talk on ‘LUMOS: the magic called light’. He mainly enlightened the audience about the advancement of optics from early age to the latest developments.

3. “Contemporary Trends in Optics 2017 – From Atoms to Stars”

Two day Conference named “Contemporary Trends in Optics 2017 – from Atoms to Stars!” conducted at IISER Kolkata. The conference included 4 technical sessions: a) Classical Optics b) Bio photonics c) Quantum Optics d) Space Optics. Distinguished researchers from India and abroad delivered the lectures in those sessions. The SPIE Student Chapter IISER K, OSA Student Chapter IISER K, along with the Centre of Excellence in Space Sciences India (CESSI), jointly organized the conference with support from IISER Kolkata.

There were 12 speakers for various sessions. Also there were 8

student speakers from various institutes in different sessions. We also had poster sessions with 30 participants.

There were a total of 90 participants from various reputed institutes across India.

Planned activities:

1. Hosting the science modelling competition in annual Science fair of IISER Kolkata.

2. SPIE lecture series- We shall organize popular science talk by the faculties and interested senior students working on different branches of optics. We plan to do around 10 such talks over the year, which is already started.

3. Visit to science city. 4. Outreach to local schools. 5. Organizing a sky gazing event for IISER students and nearby school

students. Acknowledgement: The chapter is thankful to all its members for working whole heartedly and actively participating in its activities. We express our sincere gratitude to Tasha Chicovsky and Arleen Johansson for their undying support, whenever needed. We are also thankful to our faculty advisor Dr. Ayan Banerjee for his continuous support and the previous office bearers for their cooperation whenever needed. Last but not the least the chapter is thankful to its current office bearers who made all this possible.
