This past year we celebrated 35 years of service to Chicago! Since 1984, 838 Amate House fellows

have donated nearly 1.5 million service hours to the city’s most vulnerable communities. They have

served students, victims of torture, immigrant families, the elderly, and the incarcerated. Through

their work, they have added over $36 million in value to our great city. We are proud of our long and

fruitful legacy of putting love into action – we could not have done it without your support!

2019 was a great year for Amate House. We doubled the number of fellows participating in our

service and leadership development program. Eleven fellows from across the United States took

a leap of faith and committed to live in community with people they had never met, challenged

themselves to live a simple lifestyle, explored their faith more deeply, and volunteered over 1,700

hours each to improve the lives of Chicago’s most marginalized residents.

Our fellows have gone on to do some amazing things since leaving Amate House. Margaret

is working at a homeless youth center as she participates in a second year of service with the

Colorado Vincentian Volunteers. Maddie is studying at the University of Dayton to become a

physician’s assistant. Ed is employed in campus ministry at Creighton University where he is

working on an M.A. in Pastoral Leadership.

This past year, we also improved our services to our fellows. Specifically, we increased their end-of-

year education award from $500 to $1,500. This increase was made possible through a generous

grant by the Crary Family Legacy Fund. It is our hope that we will be able to sustain this level of

award for cohorts in the years to come. If you are interested in making a restricted donation to our

Amate House was also the recipient of the 2019 St. Josaphat Unity Award. The award is given

by St. Josaphat parish to an individual or organization that has exemplified the spirit of bringing

people together and making the Gospel present. The award included a $10,000 gift which went a

long way in bolstering our program services. Thanks to the Unity Award and many other generous

donations, we were able to improve our budget outcome for the fiscal year which ended June 30,

2019, finishing the year with a surplus. We continue to explore other fundraising opportunities and

carefully steward the resources entrusted to us by our faithful donors.

The new program year is now well underway. Nineteen fellows are busy working at demanding jobs

helping the city’s underserved, creating community with their housemates, and growing in their

faith. We look forward to sharing their stories with you in the year to come!
