2019 ANNUAL REPORT

For more than 80 years, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina (ABVI) has empowered adults in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties with the tools they need to live independently with vision loss. Thanks to your support, ABVI has experienced tremendous growth in the number of individuals we serve annually.

However, as we continue to build our client base, it has become clear the demand for our services is greater than what we can provide with one location. There are over 15,000 adults in the Tri-County living with a visual impairment. For those individuals who live in Berkeley or Dorchester Counties, they often face significant transportation hurdles when trying to regularly access services at our Charleston office.

In 2019, ABVI took steps towards making our services more available to all of our clients. We were able to add in-home services and training for clients who are home-bound or simply need help ensuring they can live safely within their home. In addition, ABVI began offering classes at two satellite locations in Summerville. Now, we are excited to share that ABVI is opening a permanent, second location in Ladson to better reach our clients in all three of the counties we serve.

We are grateful to all of our donors, grantors, community partners and supporters who have helped us expand our reach in the last year. We are excited to continue to share expansion updates with you over the next several months. With your continued support, our Association will provide even more blind and visually impaired adults with the training they need to live, learn and earn with vision loss.

Sincerely,

Courtney P. Plotner Clay W. Hershey Chief Executive Officer, ABVI President, ABVI Board of Directors

Through our Own Your Life program, ABVI helps blind and visually impaired adults learn new approaches to daily life.

Since the launch of the program in 2015, over 300 Tri-County residents have taken part in skills classes, therapy sessions and social opportunities.

Skills taught through our Own Your Life classes range from household management tasks to workforce development training like typing, interview preparation and safely using public transportation. Our Own Your Life program offers two tracks:

Personal Independence provides training on how to navigate daily life with a visual impairment.

Vocational Rehabilitation helps clients who are ready to learn the adaptive skills needed to enter or re-enter the workforce.

Guide Dog ScholarshipsABVI provides Guide Dog Scholarships which are fully endowed thanks to a $250,000 endowment bequeathed to ABVI by Katie Lee Beard in 2005.

Annual scholarships are provided to help maintain and extend the working life of a guide dog and to enhance the quality of life of our blind and visually impaired clients.

These scholarships are critical for guide dogs as they need good nutrition, regular vet checkups and proper grooming to stay healthy and keep their team safe.

On average, the cost of premium dog food, regular vet visits, medicine and grooming is $1,200 a year, or $100 a month.

2019 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2006, Antowan lost his vision while he was at work. Even though he didn’t have a history of vision issues, by the end of the day he was in the hospital with unexplained, sudden vision loss. Over the next 10 years, he underwent multiple surgeries before finding out that his vision loss was permanent. He lost his job. He had to move to be closer to family. He had to file for disability. Eventually, Antowan lost hope and became severely depressed.

In 2017, he found ABVI. After a few months, Antowan told us that coming to skills classes and group therapy at ABVI saved his life.

“I could not imagine a new beginning that included thriving with vision loss. I could only see the end of the life I’d always known. ABVI changed all of that. I found people who were living fulfilled lives, despite their vision loss. I found people who were willing to support me, and I began to come out of my depression.”

Antowan participated in Orientation & Mobility training, Group Therapy, Computer classes, Assistive Technology training and Braille. He also set a goal of finding a full-time job so he could once again support himself and his two sons. This year, 14 years after losing his vision, Antowan met his goal! He secured a full-time job with benefits at K9 Resorts Daycare & Luxury Hotel.

“I did not want to stay within the boundaries of my disability. I want to be a leader and work full-time. I want to excel within a company just like all of the other employees. But mostly, I want to teach my kids that there are no limits for me.”

We are going to miss Antowan around the office, but we are so excited for this exciting new chapter in his life.

Antowan participated in computer training while at ABVI.

Focus on Adults

Focus on Children

In 2010, ABVI adapted to the needs of our community by expanding our mission to include free, preventative vision care to low-income adults and children through our Focus on Adults and Focus on Children programs. However, in recent years, there has been an expansion of preventitive vision care services as more community partners have recognized the need.

These new preventitive services have allowed ABVI to once again focus on our mission of enriching the quality of life of the blind and visually impaired. Therefore, ABVI is returning to our roots of solely serving those who are blind or visually impaired, and we will no longer be offering our Focus programs.

ABVI is excited to have the opportunity to pass the torch to others who can offer services to those who have traditionally been served through our Focus programs.

Our Focus programs were officially completed in June of 2019, and we would like to thank everyone who supported these programs through donations, grants, partnerships and time. We are thrilled to share, that because of you, close to 20,000 individuals were reached

.

Through Focus on Adults, ABVI provided comprehensive eye exams, prescription eyewear and referrals for uninsured and underinsured adults with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. We partnered with local optometrists to help correct vision impairments, prevent vision loss and educate patients on the importance of vision care.

Through our Focus on Children program, ABVI offered free vision screenings for preschool-aged students in select Charleston County schools. Local ophthalmologists and optometrists provided comprehensive eye exams to catch vision disorders in the early, treatable stages.

9

From 2010 to 2019, over 3,200 adults received eye exams through our Focus on Adults program.

From 2011 to 2019, ABVI screened over 13,600 children, and over 2,400 students received comprehensive eye exams.

In the charter year of our major gift initiative, Visionary, a special group of donors made transformational gifts to ABVI. These donors recognized the critical need for our services for the roughly 15,000 blind and visually impaired adults in the Tri-County and responded by donating $5,000 or more in FY19. Thanks to our Visionary Class of 2019, we were able to add in-home services and training for our clients who have significant transportation limits, are home-bound or who simply need help ensuring they can live safely within their homes. We were also able to begin offering classes at two satellite locations in Summerville, bringing our services closer to our Berkeley and Dorchester clients. Finally, the support of our 2019 Visionary donors paved the way for ABVI to realize plans of opening a second, permanent location in Ladson. These donors changed the course of our organization. Thanks to their generosity, we are working toward closing the gap in services for our blind and visually impaired neighbors, and together, we are enabling our clients to live, learn and earn with vision loss.

A donor is inducted into a Visionary class when he/she makes his/her first commitment to ABVI of $5,000 or more through cash, pledge or planned gift. Visionary donors are an integral part of the fabric of our organization and are stewarded accordingly. If you are interested in learning more about ABVI’s Visionary initiative, please contact Bryson Young at [email protected] or (843) 203-6037.

LIFETIME VISIONARY CIRCLE Our Lifetime Visionary Circle honors donors who have made a substantial lifetime commitment to ABVI and remain dedicated to the success and growth of the Association. Unlike our annual Visionary Class, Lifetime Giving Society members are honored for their cumulative gifts. As such, once a donor is inducted into the Lifetime Visionary Circle, they will remain a member throughout their lifetime. Donors are inducted in three categories: Lifetime Giving, Service and Heritage Societies.

Lifetime Giving Societies: Donors are inducted into Lifetime Giving Societies once their gifts total at least $10,000 in cash, pledges and/or legacy gifts. Donors can work towards higher Societies with each new gift.

Dorothy Wenberg Donor of the Year: This award goes to a donor who has made a transformational impact on the organization through his/her gifts. The award is named for Dorothy Wenberg, a donor who bequeathed $6,000,000 to ABVI in 2003. The endowment Ms. Wenberg left secured the future of the Association and continues to open doors for ABVI today. Because her gift came as a surprise, we were unable to honor Mrs. Wenberg during her lifetime but honor the impact she made on our organization through this award. The Dororthy Wenberg Donor of the Year is nominated by our Board’s Development Committee and voted on by our Board of Directors.

Service Society: The Service Society honors friends of ABVI who have gone above and beyond the call to help our organization through non-cash gifts. While we are not always able to fully monetize in-kind gifts, these donors have made a substantial impact on ABVI through gifts of time, talent and service. Service Society inductees are nominated by our Board of Directors’ Development Committee and voted on by our Board of Directors.

Heritage Society: Once a legacy gift of at least $10,000 is realized, the donor will be inducted into our Heritage Society.

Dorothy Wenberg Donor of the Year

The 2019 Dorothy Wenberg Donor of the Year is Colonel Bernhard Karl Jantzen. Karl is the only living person we have named a Lifetime Giving Society for as he truly embodies what it means to be a lifetime donor to ABVI. Karl has given generously in ways that have served our immediate needs and helped to secure our future. Karl has been involved with our organization for decades, and aside from his incredibly generous financial gifts, has served our organization as a member of our Board and as an avid advocate. He truly ticks every box of what we hope an ABVI donor can be and was the clear choice for our first Dorothy Wenberg Donor of the Year award.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Stay in Touch

EyeGive is our monthly giving program where donors can enroll in automatic, monthly donations to ABVI. With monthly donations starting at just $15 a month, it is an easy way to have a resounding impact on our blind and visually impaired clients. EyeGive donors are invited to a special Spring appreciation event each year. To enroll in recurring donations, visit www.abvisc.org/eyegive.

MONTHLY DONATIONS ABVI loves volunteers! We

have volunteer opportunities every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm. In addition, we are always in need of event or administrative support. To learn more about all of ABVI’s volunteer opportunities, contact Susan Lucas at [email protected] or 843.410.1061 or visit www.abvisc.org/volunteer.

VOLUNTEERS

PLANNED GIVINGPlanned gifts allow donors to leave a legacy while ensuring the future success of ABVI. We find planned giving to be incredibly valuable, and as such, steward documented planned gifts in the same way we would cash. We accept gifts in the following forms: Will Bequest, Trust, Life Insurance Policy, IRA/Retirement Distribution or Charitable Remainder Trust. To learn more, please contact Bryson Young at [email protected] or 843.203.6037.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES AND PROGRAM SPONSORSHIPSAs we explore new ways to create access for clients, we are developing opportunities for families to leave a lasting mark on our organization through naming opportunities with our programs, our Charleston office and our brand-new Ladson location. In addition, client service scholarships are available starting at $25,000 or $5,000 per year for five years. To learn more about ABVI’s full menu of naming opportunities and scholarships, please contact Bryson Young at [email protected] or 843.203.6037.

UNRESTRICTED DONATIONSThousands of individuals in the Tri-County need help learning to live with vision loss. A one-time, unrestricted donation allows ABVI to allocate the money where it is most needed. For example, a gift of $75 could provide 3 white canes for a blind or visually impaired adult, or a gift of $200 could provide 25 roundtrip Tel-A-Ride tickets. To make a one-time, unrestricted donation, please return the envelope included with this publication or visit www.abvisc.org/donate to give online.
