CIM® ANNUAL REPORT 2020
ABOUT CSI Canadian Securities Institute has been setting the standard of excellence for over 50 years. We have trained over one million global professionals making us the preferred partner for individuals, financial institutions, and regulators on an international scale. Our certifications give financial services professionals a strategic career advantage.
The Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation is the industry standard for discretionary investment and portfolio management services. It is recognized by Canadian securities regulators and ensures that those who earn it are qualified to evaluate and manage all aspects of a client’s investment portfolio.

Digital Badges
We launched Digital Badges for all CIM® designation holders in partnership with Credly’s Acclaim platform in 2019. Digital badges are portable image files that enable CIM® designation holders to share their credentials online securely. We have issued the digital badge to eligible CIM® designation holders. We invite designation holders to post them to their email signature, personal website, and social media channels. The CIM® badge logo includes personalized metadata that ties the badge to the individual earner’s career achievements, and it verifies
their skills, competencies, and the validity period of their designation. Visit csi.ca/digitalbadges to learn more.
Financial Literacy Month Campaign
To mark the Financial Literacy Month’s tenth anniversary in November 2020, we launched a public awareness
campaign promoting the CIM® designation. Our goal was to build awareness of the CIM® designation in the
Canadian financial services market by emphasizing its value to the financial services community—including clients,
financial institutions and CIM® candidates—through external financial media houses and social media channels.
Over 86,000 people engaged with our promotions and wanted to learn more about the CIM®.
We also conducted a series of three webinars to bolster financial literacy for the investing public. CIM® designation
holders played a pivotal role in selecting topics, and creating and presenting impactful content. Each webinar
established the importance of working with a qualified financial planner. Topics included:
» Managing Money & Debt Wisely
» Preventing & Protecting Against Fraud and Financial Abuse
Visit our Resources Hub to watch the webinar replays.
CSI interviewed industry-leading financial professionals in Canada who have advanced their careers with the CIM® designation. Financial professionals shared their experience of earning the CIM® and other credentials from CSI. These
videos are now available to view on csi.ca/cim.
Annual CIM® Graduation Celebration
In November 2020, CSI held a virtual graduation celebration to honour and recognize the achievements of new CIM® and other CSI designation holders between 2018 and 2020. Marie Muldowney, Managing Director at CSI, presided over the virtual celebration with guest speaker Robert Hesp, CFP®, CIWM, FCSI®, VP & Portfolio Manager at Hesp Wealth Advisory – BMO Nesbitt Burns.
The graduation celebration received over 260 registrants, of which 90 attended the live session. The virtual graduation
was very well received, and we will now become an annual celebration. View the graduating class of 2018-2020.
Find a CIM® Tool Enhancement
We enhanced the ‘Find a CIM®’ tool that enables consumers to search for CIM® holders in their location. This tool promotes CIM® designation holders as experts in financial planning and the benefits of hiring a qualified financial
advisor for their unique financial situation. The ‘Find a CIM®’ tool is available to all website visitors on csi.ca/cim.
CIM® Milestones Campaign
We have set up email notifications to remind students on the path to the CIM® designation of the courses they must complete to earn their CIM®. Students will receive this email after every milestone they reach towards the CIM®.
Financial Health for Seniors Initiative
Within the finance community, it’s well-known that the issues facing seniors are critical. In addition to being a sizeable demographic with unique requirements, seniors are among the most vulnerable investors. CSI launched the Financial Health for Seniors initiative to offer resources free of charge to help CIM® designation holders support
and advise senior clients and their families better. The resources are available through a dedicated website (csi.ca/
seniors). They are curated by the Financial Health for Seniors Advisory Council and Content Committee members to ensure we provide relevant content based on advisors’ needs.
We successfully held four webinars in the past year. Topics included:
» The changing face of retirement advice
» Starting the conversation to plan for retirement
» Understanding the complexities of elder abuse
» Preventing financial abuse of older adults
Visit our Resources Hub to watch the webinar replays.
Webinars Supporting Advisors During The Pandemic
We hosted a series of three webinars free of charge for CSI designation holders and their clients to support them through the pandemic-induced financial crisis. We partnered with CIM® designation holders and other senior financial experts to offer webinars on a range of topics, including:
» Exclusive Town-Hall Webinar: How are you doing? How are your clients doing?
» Behavioural Economics: Investing During a Crisis – What Does the Science Teach?
» How to Become Your Client’s Financial Architect?
Visit our Resources Hub to watch the webinar replays.
CSI Resources Hub
Building on our experience with Financial Health for Seniors and our webinar series held last summer, we have launched a CSI Resources Hub to provide trusted learning and insights to enable CIM® designation holders to act with confidence and make better decisions for their clients. The resources on this Hub—including webinars, whitepapers, articles, videos, podcasts and more—are available free of charge to CIM® designation holders in good standing. We charge an annual
subscription fee of $199 to non-designation holders to access these resources. Explore the CSI Resources Hub.
Computer-Based Testing via Remote Proctoring and Exam Centres
We have been working with our partner, Prometric, to modernize our exam delivery formats and provide students on the path to the CIM® designation with greater flexibility, safety and a better overall exam-taking experience.
On December 8, 2020, we introduced Remotely Proctored exams and expanded our existing Computer-Based Testing (CBT) capacity to exam centres outside of Toronto and Montreal in 14 major Canadian cities (St. John’s, Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, London, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton,
Vancouver) and internationally. Learn more about Computer-Based Testing and Remote Proctoring.
External Course Discount
Through strategic partnerships with external subject matter experts, CSI provides CIM® designation holders with discounts on courses that complement their continuing education and practice. In 2020, we partnered with Lloyd Williams to offer the Trade Like A Pro course to advisors looking to attract new clients and prospects and invigorate their practice. This US$1,095 course was available to CIM® designation holders at a US$300 discount. This course also provides 20 hours of IIROC or CIM® CE PD credits. Over 140 CSI designation holders have taken advantage of this course.
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
CSI Podium
CSI Podium is a new and unique initiative, created in the spirit of CSI’s overall mission to provide thought leadership and real-world training. This platform offers CIM® designation holders speaking opportunities through webinars to benefit their clients, colleagues and the investing public. Speakers are also awarded CE credits towards their annual CIM® designation renewal for giving back to the designation community. Over the past year, we had 14 speakers who conducted ten webinars. If you are interested in becoming a speaker on financial planning topics,
please reach out to us at [email protected].
Continuing Education (CE) Finder Tool
Fulfilling continuing education (CE) requirements is mandatory to renew the CIM® designation and other licenses. To enable CIM® designation holders to find CSI’s latest CE courses, we are developing a CE Finder Tool. This tool will provide learners with a curated list of courses to complete to earn their required CE credits under the Compliance and Professional Development (PD) categories for various professional designations and licences, including the CIM®.
