The Walla Walla Valley experienced two disasters before June 30, 2020 – the end of the fiscal year we are profiling in this Annual Report – the February 2020 floods and the coronavirus pandemic.

The Walla Walla Valley’s nonprofit sector has risen to the challenges of both disasters. People know that our high quality of life is because of the nonprofit institutions and programs that provide basic human needs (food and shelter), health care, education, arts and culture, recreation, conservation and environmental work, and religious observance. These same institutions have come together to provide relief and advocacy so that everyone – particularly those historically excluded and denigrated – can survive the pandemic. The Community Foundation has definitely played a supporting role as other nonprofits have mobilized to expand help in the pandemic.

BMCF created two funds for disaster relief and recovery – the first was to help people in need affected by the floods, and second was to help ensure our communities have necessary food, shelter, health care and mental health care and child care to get through this long-lasting emergency. Since mid-March 2020, grants and donations of over $1.1 million have flowed through the Community Foundation as grants to address both emergencies.

Due to our Discretionary Grant funds, where people create endowments that leave the selection of the grant recipient up to the Community Foundation, BMCF has been able to quickly respond to the disasters. When everything shut down in March, BMCF immediately dedicated $100,000 to the Walla Walla Valley Covid-19 Relief Fund which jump started more support to organizations struggling with the increased needs. The community responded with another $400,000, support that continues today. This kind of quick action and flexible funding are what a community foundation is for.

I retired at the end of September 2020. I feel I definitely ended my 40 year career in the nonprofit sector on a high note. It has been my privilege and joy to be part of the Community Foundation and this community. I will continue to be involved along with my husband Jim in one way or another in the community in the future. But my closing message is to please keep growing the Community Foundation, ESPECIALLY in undesignated funds. This isn’t for the sake of just getting bigger, but to ensure that future generations have significant flexible resources available to solve problems and make life better for everyone. Plus the Community Foundation is under the control of the community through a community-based Board and dozens of volunteers. The pandemic has proven that we really have no idea what the future will bring; let’s put resources aside in endowments so that we have the tools to deal with whatever it brings.

You are invited to be part of the Community Foundation, and play a role in ensuring the Blue Mountain region and its communities thrive.

What a year it’s been! Most of us, in our wildest dreams, could not have envisioned the events of 2020 that have almost literally upend-ed the proverbial apple cart, not only in the valley but across the globe. Between the floods in February and the appearance of Covid-19 in March, the Foundation has quickly adapted in order to meet the challenges these events have created to ensure the needs of our community are being met. Thanks to the strength of our team, which includes staff, board members and community volunteers, the Foundation has had a significant impact in our valley this year. For example, the Walla Walla Valley Covid-19 Response Fund was established in order to provide financial assistance to nonprofit agencies that were directly impacted by the effects of this aggressive pandemic. Now, more than ever, the importance of the Community Foundation as an agent for change has never been more apparent. Our founders began the Foundation over 35 years ago with a goal of establishing a source of unrestricted funds to address unforeseen needs in the future. I doubt many of those pioneers or our organizational team could have predicted the challenges that 2020 would bring to the region. However, because of the foresight of these founders, the Foundation exists to adjust to events similar to those we’re experiencing now. Through all of the events of 2020, we also bid farewell to our Executive Director of 7 years, Kari Isaacson. After significantly increasing the assets of the Foundation to over $50 million, as well as enhancing the Foundation’s image in the valley, she had the audacity to decide it was time to ride off into the sunset with her husband. Kari’s insight and involvement in the community will be sorely missed. She touched many lives during her tenure with the Foundation and we wish her the best in all her future adventures. The good news is that following an extensive search we are pleased to welcome Kol Medina as our new President & CEO beginning on December 1. Kol comes to the Foundation following 8 years as the Pres-ident & CEO of the Kitsap Community Foundation. We anticipate Kol’s vision, experience and wealth of knowledge will continue to strengthen our ability to connect our valley with charitable causes.

While our crystal ball hasn’t told us what to expect in 2021, we can only hope it’s somewhat less exciting, from a disaster standpoint, than 2020. No matter what comes our way, the Foundation will be here as a catalyst to solve problems and embrace opportunities.

C O V I D - 1 9The Milton-Freewater School District received a grant to launch an after school program at the old Freewater Elementary School. The program was just gearing up when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools for the remainder of the school year. As it became clear that students would be unlikely to return to full-time in-person learning in the fall, the school district and Walla Walla YMCA teamed up to design a program to help working families. With a capacity of 100 kids, the new pro-gram provides all day care and assistance with online learning for Milton-Freewater youth while their parents are working and no child is turned away for inability to pay.
