It was 35 years ago... ...that a group of visionary leaders in our community had a dream – to create a safe and nurturing place for young children threatened with abuse and a place parents could turn to before it was too late. Our community rallied and Crisis Nursery opened its doors in 1977. Since then, 20,000 children and their families have found their way to us – each with their own story.

With the guidance and financial support from so many of you, Crisis Nursery has transformed from a small cottage housing five youngsters to a multi-service, community-based agency that now cares for more than 1,000 children each year and provides a wide array of support services to their families.

Through these changes our mission has remained constant – helping children and families break through their personal cycles of child abuse and neglect.

None of the transformations we see every day at Crisis Nursery would be possible without the participation and support of our board of directors, foundations, corporate and community partners, individuals and families, community leaders and volunteers and dedicated professionals.

But the need for and the importance of our work continues. More and more families in our community are in trouble and our Child Protective Services system is simply overwhelmed. For children removed from their homes due to abuse, the need for comprehensive services like those at our Children’s Shelter has never been more critical. And there are simply not enough foster families for the growing number of child victims needing temporary, loving homes.

Like the children and families we serve, Crisis Nursery has also faced challenges over the years. But we have been able to weather the occasional storms of state deficits and contract cuts because nearly half of our operating revenue is from non-governmental sources – it comes from our community and people like all of you. It has allowed us to be nimble when the unexpected occurs, be strategic whenever possible and always keep our focus on meeting the needs of the children and families it is our mission to serve.

On behalf of the thousands of children and families who have found safety, success and hope at Crisis Nursery over the past 35 years, thank you for helping make their personal transformations possible. It has been an exciting journey for them and for all of us. But our work is not yet done! We invite you to continue to partner with us in the years ahead as together we find new ways to help break the cycle of child abuse and neglect - the only way that it can be done, one child and one family at a time.

Giving children just what they deserve: a childhood.

More than 1,000 children and their families find success and hope at Crisis Nursery each year. As the Valley’s longest-serving children’s shelter, we have provided a safe haven and support services for more than 20,000 children since 1977. Each day we give families resources and access, in order to support safer, happier and healthier lives.

Crisis Nursery programs encompass Children’s Shelter, FACES Early Head Start, Healthy Families and Foster Care programs. Each program is designed to address the social, psychological and developmental needs of the children we serve. Last year, our dedicated staff provided 37,137 days of care and 7,792 home visits to more than 200 underserved children every day.

Our community supports children.

More than ever, we are grateful to our board of directors, donors and volunteers who share our belief that children deserve the chance to grow healthy and reach their potential and that families facing adversity should be able to access the services they and their children need on a voluntary basis, before abuse and neglect occurs.

Each year, our supporters come together to raise funds for our programs and services through our annual Breaking the Cycle Luncheon, The Friends of Crisis Nursery’s annual benefit and our newest event, K’s for Kids 5k Run/Walk. Together, our major events have raised more than $532,000 for the children and families served by our programs this past year.

Volunteers have contributed 19,278 hours of their time and talents caring for and supporting our children. That is a 31 percent increase over last year! The monetary value of volunteer contributions is $420,067*.

K’S FOR KIDS 5K RUN/WALKBREAKING THE CYCLE LUNCHEON THE FRIENDS OF CRISIS NURSERY’S ANNUAL BENEFIT

A Children’s Shelter: from a multitude of storms.Beginning in a small cottage serving five children, our Children’s Shelter has grown and provided care to 482 children last year. Thousands of vulnerable children have received short-term care and support since our doors opened in 1977. During their stay, each child is provided with new clothes and shoes, specialized medical attention, educational opportunities and behavioral services. Every child is cared for by a well-trained, nurturing staff in a safe, child-friendly environment.

FACES: a head start on a healthy future.Last year, FACES has served more than 140 infants, toddlers and preschoolers and their families. Through early childhood education and family support, our focus is to enhance each child’s growth and development; strengthen families as the primary nurturers for their children; and enhance parent-child relationships.

Foster Care: sharing one’s heart and home.Our Foster Care Program has licensed 74 families who have cared for 236 child victims of abuse and neglect. Our foster families embraced these children while working closely with Child Protective Services and their birth families when the plan was for family reunification.

When a return to a parent was no longer possible or not in the child’s best interest, Crisis Nursery worked to help each child achieve a permanent home. During the past year, 42 of the 126 children living in our foster homes either returned home to their parents, were placed with relatives or are being adopted.

Healthy Families is part of a national initiative to help new families at risk of abuse and neglect get their children off to a healthy start. In partnership with Southwest Human Development, Crisis Nursery’s Healthy Families home visitors have helped hundreds of families since 1994.

Due to program expansion at FACES in the coming year, our 18-year partnership with Southwest Human Development and the Healthy Families program will come to an end, with our home visitors transitioning back to Southwest Human Development. We wish them well and know that young families in our neighborhoods will continue to receive the support they need to succeed.
