Impact. It was the word of the year at the Cleveland Leadership Center (CLC). Teaching our program participants to have greater impact on the community. Engaging alumni and ourselves in myriad community impact projects. Evaluating our impact on the community. Exploring innovative ways to increase the impact of our alumni and our organization.

Over the course of the year, Cleveland Leadership Center: • Educated, connected and inspired over 750 emerging

and established leaders through our core leadership development and civic education programs.

• Awarded $13,000 to five individuals for their innovative ideas to improve Northeast Ohio at Accelerate 2017: Citizens Make Change – our annual pitch competition.

• Brightened over 1,700 at-risk Cleveland high school students’ futures through career exposure and skills enhancement with school-based Career Circles and the Empower Cleveland Youth program.

• Collaborated with more than a dozen local organizations to advance community improvement initiatives, including:

• Advising Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland on the creation and launch of The Innovation Mission.

• Recruiting more than 40 Teach For America advisors and mentors for their Cleveland cohort of teachers.

• Immersing nearly 100 University School seniors in local issues through educational sessions and volunteering.

• Educated nearly 250 people across sectors and careers on leadership development topics and relevant community issues at our first-ever Leadership Conference.

As we look toward the future, we know there is a great need for leaders to share their skills and expertise to advance community issues. We also know leaders are eager to lend a hand when the issues and skills needed align with their own. There is a great opportunity for us to connect our talented alumni with causes and projects to advance meaningful community issues.

We look forward to achieving even greater positive outcomes over the coming year. We hope you will join us!

GuidingFramework

MissionTo build a continuum of civic leaders committed to our community’s

excellence by serving as a catalyst for civic engagement.

Civic Understanding

RelationshipBuilding

Collaborative Leadership

CivicReadiness

Learning the history, critical issues and current assets of our community and considering

implications for the future.

Creating opportunities to connect across a continuum of

leaders.

Enhancing skills, knowledge and

personal awareness to build coalitions and effect positive

change in the community.

Fostering individual attitudes, knowledge

and behaviors that spark informed and sustained activity in

the civic realm.

Cleveland Leadership Center’s guiding framework is built upon four desired program outcomes: civic understanding, relationship building, collaborative leadership and civic readiness. These four

pillars guide curriculum development and delivery and provide a framework to support continuous evaluation and strengthen each offering.

Every Cleveland Leadership Center program is evaluated through a retrospective pre-test (RPT). Through the RPT, participants rate their knowledge, attitude and skills relative to the four outcomes at the beginning of the program compared to the end. The results illustrate the impact of each program.

Accelerate 2017

Citizens Make Change

Jeremy LanghamIronborne Brew WorksSince his winning pitch at Accelerate, Jeremy has been moving forward with his dream for a benevolent brew pub – where a portion of the sales are donated to a local social justice cause of the patron’s choosing.

After the event, Jeremy teamed up with 2016 winner Ben Colas at Cleveland Co-labs’ “Cleveland Give and Get: A Charity Date Auction.” Jeremy auctioned off a home brewing experience to raise money for Ben’s KinderKits.

The head brew team participated in an intensive brewing science program and have won a handful of medals at regional brewing competitions.

Jeremy spent Spring 2017 immersed in the SEA Change curriculum and conducting market research, and won $15,000 at the 2017 SEA Change Cleveland Accelerator competition.

Ironborne Brew Works is securing the remaining funding necessary for the launch and evaluating grantee applications from charitable organizations.

Ironborne anticipates a 2018 opening.

Shayla IvezzyCareer Closet: More Than a WardrobeSince Accelerate, Shayla has been working to bring her project – a wardrobe and mobile career center on wheels for under-served students – to life.

She is exploring potential partnerships with local nonprofits and has an active crowd-funding campaign to purchase a vehicle. She received her first donation of clothing from The Tie Bar.

Shayla was also one of 10 entrepreneurs selected to pitch at JumpStart’s Core City Cleveland, “Pitch Your Business” competition on April 19, where she won $500. She is also creating workshops for Thea Bowman Center’s six-week college and career readiness series.

Daniel Gray-KontarImagination for Our Imagined NationDaniel Gray-Kontar pitched his idea at Accelerate 2017 to send five young Cleveland artists to the Brave New Voices Festival and Competition in San Francisco in Summer 2017 and won $2,000 as a finalist.

He received additional funding to send the artists to the competition from Oswald Companies (an Accelerate category sponsor) and Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland.

The five youth were selected from 14 finalists who presented at the One Mic Open Youth Poetry Slam Final Competition on March 31, 2017. They competed in San Francisco in July 2017.

Jowan SmithGetting Our Babies to College 101Jowan’s dream of helping families understand the importance of starting the college prep process early and navigating their way to as much free money for college as possible has come to fruition.

Since the event, she has been a guest on various local media shows to share tips to prepare students and parents for the college prep process. She has also spoken at a number of events, including the Cleveland Mayor’s Youth Summit and the WGBH EdForum: Supporting and Engaging Students in the Middle Grades in Boston.

Jowan was one of five entrepreneurs selected to participate in JumpStart Inc.’s Core City Impact Program.

Ava Alexandra ThomasMemory MatAva’s idea for personalized, DIY place mats with pictures and phrases that act as memory cues for individuals with memory loss and as conversation starters for visitors and caregivers has become a reality.

With her winnings, Ava, a high school student, purchased an extra-wide portable laminator and materials to produce mats that have a more professional feel. She created a new instruction sheet and completed the first batch of mats with the West Geauga Senior Center.

She visited another local senior center twice in June 2017 to make Memory Mats with the seniors and continues to seek other facilities to implement Memory Mats.

Other presenter updatesStephanie BudaBuild on Solid RockStephanie launched The Kids of 216 with 20 at-risk students from various CMSD high schools. The kids were employed as construction “pre-apprentices,” earned OSHA 10 certificates and learned trade skills by working on projects for low-income families, seniors, and disabled residents whose homes were in need of immediate repair.

Ebony HoodUrban Watershed RegattaEbony’s idea for a youth regatta, complete with training and coaching, to expose them to a new urban sport that connects them to the environment in which they live became a reality in August 2017.

Jim RidgeIgnite: A Celebration of the Burning RiverJim’s pitch for an arts and music festival to celebrate Cleveland’s waterfront recovery, manifested in a scaled down version as the Burning River Ramble in June 2017 – a free, pop-up running/walking tour of Cleveland’s riverfront. Jim plans to launch the full Ignite event in 2018.
