CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Merewether was again the dominant club in Newcastle cricket in season 2012-13. With the addition of Mark Cameron and the improvement in Dan Morton, their bowling attack had extra firepower. This complimented a very strong batting line-up with Troy Goodwin, Simon Moore and Pat Darwen all scoring over 500 runs for the season. As well as their victories in the CBA Premiership and the T20 competition, Merewether also added the prestigious SCG Cup to its list with an emphatic victory over Albury-Wodonga in the final. Merewether also won the NDCA Club Championship for season 2012-13. Special mention should go to Wests CC who had their best season for many years. They made the final in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, with victory in 2nd grade. Hamilton-Wickham also showed continued good form in taking out the minor premiership in 1st grade and winning the Tom Locker Cup 1 day competition. The representative season was again hampered by rain. The senior rep team easily won matches against North Coast and Central North at the country carnival but with its third match washed out, the team did not qualify for the final based on its net run rate. Captain Mark Littlewood scored a dominant century against Central North and Josh Bennett emerged as the number one fast bowler in NSW Country cricket. Josh was subsequently named NSW Country player of the year following his performances with NSW Country at the Australian Country Championships. Next seasons representative program will be enhanced with the invitation from the Sydney Cricket Association for Newcastle to enter a team in the SCA T20 competition. This will provide increased exposure and opportunities for Newcastle players and will hopefully be the start of a closer relationship with the SCA. The DeCourcy Club continues to be a great supporter of Newcastle cricket. Thank you to Robert Faraday-Bensley and his committee for their ongoing assistance. This season the NDCA major award winners were announced at the DeCourcy Club finals luncheon. This move away from a dedicated presentation night had the support of all clubs and the luncheon was extremely well supported by the Newcastle cricket clubs. Sam Webber was awarded the Herald Player of the Year for the second year in a row. At this season’s finals lunch, the DeCourcy Club also announced the provision of a new annual scholarship to assist young cricketers with funding for cricket related activities. The inaugural winner was 17 year old Bayley McGill from Cardiff Boolaroo club who was selected in the NSW Combined High Schools team to tour the UK during the winter. Bayley also had the thrill of sitting with one of the special guests in Simon Katich during the lunch. 2012-13 was a season in which the NDCA Management Committee looked to introduce some reform into the structure of Newcastle District cricket competition. This reform was ultimately rejected by the clubs. At the time of writing it appears a number of the NDCA Management Committee will not be seeking re-election for next season. To lose over 30 years of cricket administration knowledge at the one time will create a large void and will require a long time to

rebuild this level of experience. In particular I would like to thank the following three committee members who have given tremendous service to Newcastle cricket in many roles over many years – Jerry Tombleson, Paul Robertson and Joseph Wenta. They have given me great support, counsel and advice during our time together on the committee and at all times held the future of Newcastle cricket as paramount. I would like to thank the local media for their ongoing support of Newcastle cricket - Josh Leeson at the Newcastle Herald, Mitchell Hughes at NBN TV, and Craig Hamilton from ABC radio. Newcastle cricket is currently receiving unmatched coverage across all forms of media. I would also like to thank our main sponsors – the Commonwealth Bank, Kingsgrove Sports, Kookaburra, and South’s Leagues Club. Finally, thank you to my fellow committee members for their contribution during the season and looking forward to season 2013-14 when Newcastle makes its first foray into the SCA competition. SECRETARY’S REPORT The Committee of Management of the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) has much pleasure in presenting the 124th Annual Report covering the 2011/2012 season. Congratulations are extended to the Final winning clubs

• First Grade – Merewether DCC • Second Grade – Wests CC • Third Grade – Newcastle City and Eastern Districts CC • Fourth Grade – Merewether DCC • First Grade T20 Competition – Merewether DCC • Tom Locker Cup – Hamilton-Wickham DCC • Denis Broad OAM Cup – Belmont • Under 21 Competition – Toronto Workers DC • Under 15 T20 Competition – Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC

The Annual General Meeting in August 2012 saw some changes to the makeup of the management committee. With constitution change the committee was reduced from ten to eight. Peter March, Ben Smee and Philip Stanbridge did not seek re-election. Alan Nichols joined the committee for this season. The Management Committee appointed the following persons as Chairman of the standing committees for season 2012/2013:

• Appeals Committee – Peter Owens • Judiciary Committee – Paul Robertson • Selection – Philip Stanbridge • Fixtures and Permits Committee – Joseph Wenta • Umpires Appointments – Jeremy Tombleson

The NDCA website (www.ndca.asn.au) again proved a major source for cricket followers of the local competition with well over 50,000 visits on all various pages of the site. The Annual Presentation evening was discontinued this season with falling attendances over recent years. This decision was welcomed by clubs as representative from the management committee attended each presentation evening of the clubs and presented trophies won by that club and to individual winner’s on the evening. The Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA) continued to supply as many umpires as possible to Saturday Grade fixtures and the various Sunday competitions. An off season campaign will hopefully see increased numbers on field in season 2013-2014.

Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Country Cricket New South Wales (CCNSW) are also thanked for their support of Newcastle cricket. Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Council are also thanked for providing many grounds that are available to allow competitions to proceed smoothly throughout the season. The Committee discussed many issues during the season including the rules of competition, a premier league, the presentation evening, continuing sponsorship, representative coaches and the overall representative program. My personal thanks are extended to all members of management and members of sub committees who give up their time freely to assist in the running of the various competitions. Grade/Association Secretaries are also thanked for giving up their time voluntarily to assist their respective clubs and the NDCA as a whole. R D (Royce) McCormack Secretary, NDCA

OBITUARIES Ken Hill (1918-2012) is widely regarded as one of the finest cricketers that Newcastle has ever produced. A life member of the Lambton-New Lambton club, Ken also played for both Merewether and Newcastle City in a First Grade career which spanned three decades. A prolific all-rounder, Ken scored more than 5000 runs and took more than 500 wickets in the First Grade competition, including a remarkable 82 wickets in the 1942-1943 season. Ken represented Newcastle on many occasions, and was also selected in the NSW Sheffield Shield squad alongside some of the greats of Australian cricket, including Arthur Morris, Ray Lindwall and Keith Miller.

Kevin McDonald (1926-2013) was a long standing servant of Newcastle cricket, familiar to many players as a First Grade umpire. Kevin was President of the Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association from 1992 to 1996, and held a number of other offices within the Umpires Association. Kevin also served as a member of the Management Committee of the Association from 1993 to 2004.

HUNTER DEVELOPMENT MANAGER’S REPORT In July 2012, Cricket NSW Game Development Department re-aligned staff and regions to reflect the shift in population across NSW in recent years and to take into account projected growth. The Newcastle-Central Coast region was split into two with the Central Coast having its own dedicated Development Manager. Hunter Valley Cricket Council was added to Newcastle Cricket Zone to form the “Hunter Region” and after coaching the NSW Breakers for two seasons, I was fortunate to return to manage the same area I served previously between 1999 and 2005. The Local Government Areas of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens are amongst the fastest growing populations in coastal areas while inland LGA’s of Maitland and Cessnock achieved the largest growth for regions outside the Sydney metropolitan area. The need to support these areas has never been more apparent than now if we are to grow cricket in the community. The primary objective of Game Development is to increase participation and inspire the next generation of players, fans and volunteers in NSW through an Operation Plan. Key stakeholders include Cricket authorities, affiliate clubs, Schools, Universities, Local Government Authorities, Australian Sports Commission, indoor cricket centres and the community. Key functions of the plan are School Engagement, in2CRICKET, Junior Club Cricket and Community, BBL & Multicultural Engagement. This report provides a summary of Game Development activities initiated in the Hunter Region during the season. A detailed version is available from the Newcastle Cricket Zone website. SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT Cricket NSW is one of the few sports providing school programs that are linked to syllabus outcomes and schools are very pleased with the sessions provided by our enthusiastic staff. Many schools require a term or more to coordinate visits or commit to programs making targeted recruitment visits difficult to coordinate. School visits can be physical (Mega Clinics, School Heroes Programs, one-off in2cricket promotions) or non-physical (eg assembly addresses) depending on the timing and outcome. Traditionally T20 Blast gala days have traditionally been scheduled during 4th term of school however in 2012/13, Year 5-6 events were brought forward to 3rd term to assist with club recruitment. Nine events were staged across the region attracting 205 boys and girls teams to play small-sided cricket matches with modified rules that encourage participation. At many events, high school students assisted Cricket NSW staff with umpiring and scoring duties. A number of events were also held for Year 3-4 students using a similar format to the Year 5-6 games except that players batted in pairs. Cricket Australia Participation Census Cricket participation in NSW increased by 4.5% in 2012-13 however both Newcastle and Hunter Valley Associations recorded a reduction in the number of junior and senior club team entries compared with the previous season. The decline continues the trend of recent seasons and is concerning given the rate of population growth over the same period. Growth was achieved in entry level programs such as Milo in2CRICKET and school engagement programs highlighting the increased work occurring in the school yard by CNSW Development Managers. The success or failure of recruitment and retention strategies often rely on the support of clubs and committed volunteers. Junior and senior associations need to urgently consider if their current

Page 10: ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTprovision of a new annual scholarship to assist young cricketers with funding for cricket related activities. The inaugural winner was 17 year

NDCA ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 9

playing formats are attractive to potential customers while clubs need to implement strategies that will retain participants and volunteers. MILO IN2CRICKET PROGRAMS The Hunter Region was the first country area to reach its target number of Milo in2CRICKET centres and it was pleasing to see a number of new centres established during the season. The benefits to clubs from coordinating Milo in2CRICKET centres are well documented with the player retention into junior teams and recruitment of parent volunteers into the club being major features of the program. The focus for the coming season will be to establish more centres in Newcastle while building strong growth at existing centres. JUNIOR CLUB CRICKET Recruitment Cricket NSW provided collateral to clubs and in2CRICKET centres to assist with player recruitment and retention for the 2012-13 season in addition to information distributed during school engagement activities. The MyCricket website allowed potential recruits to search for their local junior or senior club, Milo in2CRICKET or T20 Blast centre from information entered by club administrators or Milo Coordinators and a microsite launched by Cricket NSW provided clubs with downloadable templates to print their own posters, flyers, newsletter inserts and retention letters. Weetbix Cup T20 Pilot The Weetbix Cup T20 competition has been running in metropolitan areas for the last four seasons. The format was piloted in country areas in 2012-13 and it was pleasing to work with Maitland Juniors to run the competition in U12 and U14 age divisions. The mid-week games of T20 had a few modified rules to boost participation and designed to replace net training with centre-wicket practice. Feedback was very positive with comments including players had improved their running between wickets, more spectators attended than on Saturdays and clubs running BBQ’s during matches. MyCricket Two MyCricket training seminars were held for administrators at Maitland and the Upper Hunter. Upper Hunter Juniors used the system to manage their junior competition for the first time. Establishing MyCricket websites for clubs and providing training support will be a major focus in 2013-14 to ease the demands on volunteer’s time. “Well Played” CA Policy Guidelines Cricket Australia launched their revised “Well Played” Policy Guidelines in December updating the first policy issued in 2005. The guidelines are a very useful tool for associations and clubs and a PDF copy can be downloaded from the cricket.com.au website. Coach Education U9-U10 Bowling Clinics After discussing the ‘negative’ experiences in early age cricket, Newcastle JCA and Cricket NSW combined to run a seminar to teach bowling basics to coaches involved with teams in the U9-U10 age groups. This was followed by two sessions with junior players being put through drills to teach bowling basics and thus provide players with a better cricket ‘experience’. Coach Education “Training to Play” Refresher Clinic NSW Coach Educator David Drew joined me to run a practical skills clinic for Maitland coaches focusing on drills and skills that provide education and variety at team training sessions. More than 20 coaches attended with Maitland junior representative cricketers used to demonstrate the drills.

Encouraging coaches to attend Level 1 courses and coordinating more refresher courses will increase coaching knowledge, session quality and boost player engagement and retention. COMMUNITY, BBL & MULTICULTURAL ENGAGEMENT Toyota Country Blitz Sydney 6ers Development regions across the state were divided into support bases for the two NSW BBL teams, the Sydney 6ers and Thunder. Regions to the north and north-west of Sydney were aligned to the 6ers, those to the south and south-west aligned to the Thunder. Recruitment collateral and show bags were designed to promote the teams in each region. Fan engagement and memberships are very important for the 6ers in metropolitan and country areas and player engagement and club support mechanisms are at the top of their list of priorities for the 2013/14 season. Australian Sports Commission Cricket NSW maintains a close relationship with ASC staff particularly in the roll-out of their Active After Schools Programs where Cricket is one of the preferred sports delivered by staff in the Hunter Region. The after school programs provide a great opportunity for clubs to be involved with volunteers delivering programs and potential club recruitment. Cricket NSW works in partnership with the ASC providing lesson plans for after school programs and hosting gala days. Indoor Cricket The partnership between Cricket Australia and Indoor Cricket has grown stronger in recent years and Game Development Managers are committed to working closely with centre owners to maximise opportunities to run cricket programs indoors. In the Hunter, Cricket NSW is working with Thornton and Charlestown centres to coordinate coach education programs, in2CRICKET centres, pre-season club and representative training sessions and provide cross-promotion of indoor-outdoor cricket competitions. Female Cricket Initiatives There were three major female cricket initiatives implemented in the Hunter during 2012-13:

• The Australian Sports Commission, Swansea Junior cricket club, Cricket NSW and local primary schools joined forces to establish a girl’s cricket program run during 3rd term at Caves Beach demonstrating what can be achieved by working together with external providers to coordinate grants and resources.

• Newcastle Juniors have been long-term supporters of female cricket programs. This season the girl’s twilight competition received a facelift with skill sessions preceding matches that used modified rules, a softer ball and played over a short time-frame.

• An inter-region girl’s gala day was piloted during March involving Central Coast, Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Northern Inland. Inter-region competitions are the way of the future as we grow club participation and I encourage Country Cricket Zones to ignite competitions between neighboring zones when scheduling traditional male representative programs.

Holiday Clinics Joint Cricket-AFL Clinics were run during the September school holidays targeting 5-10 year olds to promote in2CRICKET centres. The clinics were well attended in Forster, Newcastle, Maitland and Muswellbrook. Clinics were also conducted with the Office of Communities Sport & Recreation in the January holidays for primary school students. Facilities & Grants An extensive audit of facilities is being undertaken across the Hunter to provide a single-point of reference to identify the need and quality of grounds and amenities used by cricket and to identify

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTprovision of a new annual scholarship to assist young cricketers with funding for cricket related activities. The inaugural winner was 17 year

upgrades. Providing quality facilities is a key-pillar of retention and the ability to access grants to assist with the cost of new or replacement equipment and structures is important. To make this process easier, Cricket NSW have a dedicated staff member experienced in grant writing available to assist clubs in completing applications. Recently the NSW Government released successful applicants for their Community Building Partnership (CBP) Grants. Eleven projects were allocated $261,050 and cricket clubs and associations in the Hunter were well represented as Grant recipients. LOOKING AHEAD - THE ASHES 2013-14 The Ashes Series and BBL3 provide a great platform to ignite Australia’s Favourite Sport in Australia’s Biggest State. Population growth and history of club cricket participation strongly suggests there is capacity to grow the game across the Hunter region. Planning really begins at the end of each season and discussions held with associations in the post-season period have been extremely positive. Cricket NSW is committed to working with clubs and associations throughout the region to implement strategies to grow participation that include:

• Modified game formats where needed that appeal to the community and stimulate participation.

• Implementation of Cricket Australia’s “Well Played” Policy Guidelines within clubs and associations.

• Provision of recruitment collateral to cricket clubs and associations to promote registration dates.

• Assist clubs and associations in educating the community on available cricket products. • Club entry of registration dates and contacts on MyCricket websites to activate

playcricket.com.au, the national recruitment website. • Encourage all junior clubs and associations to coordinate Milo in2CRICKET centres. • Support associations in the use of MyCricket to manage competitions and clubs to establish

websites where none exist. • Encourage associations to endorse CA’s Introduction to Cricket on-line course as a minimum

coaching qualification. • Provide education and training opportunities for volunteers (in-services, Level 1, refresher

Volunteers are the driving force behind cricket in associations and clubs across the Hunter Region who contribute literally hundreds of hours through the summer and winter to make it all happen. Often they complete thankless tasks but in the end, if we didn’t have them, we wouldn’t have a game. To everyone who volunteered to assist their team, club or association during 2012-13, “thank you” on behalf of Cricket NSW. Building sustainable participation is a team effort requiring the commitment of associations and clubs to drive this aspiration and I’m looking forward to working with cricket volunteers during the coming season to achieve this outcome. REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET 2012-2013 Newcastle again hosted Cricket ACT for two pre-season trial matches in September 2012. With the ACT side returning from a training camp in Central Queensland, Newcastle was confronted with a well-prepared and near full strength team which contained a number of players who would feature in the Futures League in season 2012/2013. The NDCA appreciates the support of the Hamilton-Wickham District Cricket Club and curators Victor Cook and Chad Sutton, who prepared a high quality wicket at Hawkins Oval for these fixtures.

ACT 6/115 (M Gawthrop 67*, J Montgomery 2/32) def Newcastle 111 (J Montgomery 26, J Trappel 23)

Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat in clear conditions at Hawkins Oval. The ACT bowlers applied pressure from the start, taking regular wickets to restrict Newcastle to a meager total of 111 from 35 overs. Hamilton-Wickham’s Josh Trappel (23) was the only top order batsman to provide any resistance, with Wallsend’s Jake Montgomery (26) helping Newcastle to pass the century mark in his senior representative debut. Newcastle’s bowlers performed valiantly, and were able to contain the ACT batting line up despite some early season rust in the field. However, former Newcastle player Matthew Gawthrop’s quality innings of 67 not out guided ACT to a four wicket victory. ACT 8/139 (B Dean 46, M Spaseski 37, G West 4/21) def Newcastle 9/136 (J Trappel 50, S Taylor 3/18)

ACT won the toss and elected to bat in the T20 fixture played on Sunday 23 September 2012. Newcastle City’s Greg West bowled with good pace and energy to lead the attack, impressing both the Newcastle and ACT selectors in taking 4/21 from his four overs. The experience of the ACT batting line up showed, with senior players Blake Dean and Mick Spaseski taking the Comets to a very competitive total of 139 from their allotted overs. Hamilton-Wickham’s Josh Trappel compiled a half century which kept Newcastle in the match, and Josh Emerton’s (18) hitting took Newcastle within sight of victory. Despite a spirited effort, the young Newcastle side fell just three runs short of victory. These matches provide the ACT with an opportunity to prepare for their participation in the Futures League, and allow Newcastle’s most talented cricketers to showcase their skills against a talented opposition. As a result of the relationship that the NDCA has established with Cricket ACT, a number of Newcastle based players represented the Comets in several tournaments throughout the season. Andrew Maher featured for the ACT Comets in the Futures League, finishing among the top 10 wicket takers in the 2012/2013 competition. Josh Bennett made his Futures League debut late in the season, whilst former Newcastle players Beau McClintock, Matthew Gawthrop and Greg West also represented the ACT in that competition. Cameron Roxby, Ben Evans and Jake Montgomery were provided with the opportunity to participate at the Under 19 National Championships (held in Adelaide in January 2013). The NDCA thanks Cricket ACT for their continued support over the past season.

COUNTRY CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS The Northern division of the Country Cricket Championships was hosted by Newcastle in November 2012, with all matches played at Cahill Oval and Miller Field, Belmont. The Belmont Sporties Club provided superb facilities which were appreciated by players and officials alike. Curator Steve Clarkson worked tirelessly to ensure that matches went ahead, and deserves recognition for his efforts. Friday 16 November 2012 Newcastle v Central Coast Cahill Oval, Belmont Poor weather enveloped Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for the first day of the Country Championships. Play commenced in overcast conditions, with Central Coast winning the toss and asking Newcastle to bat. Newcastle were making steady progress when play was interrupted after 15 overs. Consistent rain saw the match abandoned without any further play. Saturday 17 November 2012 Newcastle v North Coast Miller Field, Belmont Newcastle captain Mark Littlewood won the toss and asked North Coast to bat in the second round match played at Cahill Oval. Newcastle’s bowlers took advantage of the friendly conditions, with Nick Foster leading the attack with figures of 5 for 30 from 8 overs. Newcastle made quick work of the run chase, securing victory in 13 overs. Opening batsman Simon Moore dominated the North Coast attack in scoring a quick fire 48. out to amass a sizeable total. With Josh Geary, Simon Moore and Mark Littlewood layed a solid platform in the first part of the innings, before Littlewood and Pat Darwen combined for a 166 run partnership for the third wicket. Josh Bennett and Jace Lawson excelled with the new ball, leaving Central North well behind the required run rate. Some missed chances allowed Central North to stay alive, with their lower order steering them to a total of 200. Despite winning both of their matches in emphatic fashion, Newcastle finished second in the Northern pool on net run rate; Central Coast progressed to the Final. UNDER 17 NORTHERN CARNIVAL The 2012/2013 Under 17 Country Championships were hosted by the Central North Zone at the King Park complex in Raymond Terrace. Round 1 – Newcastle 212 (B McGill 79, J Forsyth 55, J Stephenson 4/24, R Johnson 2/42) def North Coast 165 (J Dobson 37, D Bourke 26, T Beatty 3/27, M Clune 2/30)

Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat in good conditions on the first morning of the carnival. After the loss of two early wickets, captain Josh Forsyth and Cardiff-Boolaroo’s Bayley McGill combined for a 93 run partnership for the third wicket. Newcastle continued to play positively to finish with 212 from their allotted 50 overs. The Newcastle bowling attack was accurate, with wickets shared as North Coast were reduced to 7/74. A lower order fightback saw North Coast fall just 47 runs short of the Newcastle total. Round 2 – Riverina 9/178 (C Bridle 47, T Beatty 3/26, L Taylor 2/27) def Newcastle 166 (B Balcomb 74*, M Clune 46, S Perry 3/36, L Hutchinson 2/25)

Riverina won the toss, and achieved a competitive total of 9/178 from their 50 overs. Despite taking wickets at regular intervals, Newcastle were not able to prevent Riverina from posting a defendable total. Tyson Beatty again lead the Newcastle attack, capturing 3 for 26 from 8 overs. Despite a strong opening stand of 63 from Morgan Clune and Ben Balcomb, Newcastle were not able to produce another substantial partnership. Newcastle were dismissed on the final ball of the match. Round 3 – Central Coast 2/105 (M Nicholson 59) def Newcastle 103 (B Balcomb 26, M Nicholson 3/21, D Heuston 2/10, C O’Bierne 2/21, D Cox 2/25)

Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat in the final match of the tournament. The Newcastle batsmen struggled to pass the century mark. Hamilton-Wickham’s Ben Balcomb continued his good form, leading the Newcastle batting lineup with a composed innings of 26. Central Coast made light work of the run chase, taking just 13 overs to reach the target. Ben Balcomb, Morgan Clune and Josh Pettigrew were selected to represent the NSW Country Under 17 team, who played the NSW City Under 17 team in Bowral the weekend after the carnival.

BRADMAN CUP The 2013 Bradman Cup was hosted by Southern Zone, with matches played at Nowra in mid-January 2013. The tournament was played in extreme weather conditions, which caused difficulties for all players. Newcastle ultimately won one match, defeating the eventual champions (Illawarra) in the final preliminary round. Round 1 – Western 5/270 (A Johnston 83, D Donato 49*, J Judge 49, A Crowther 32, T Beatty 2/43) def Newcastle 6/178 (H Macansh 48, B McGill 47, R Brooks 38, J Ford 2/19)

Newcastle won the toss and after taking an early wicket were never in the contest. Fielding errors and the inability to bowl a consistent line and length with 25 sundries contributed to Western taking control of the match. In reply the Newcastle batsmen were steady but unable to reach the required run-rate required. A partnership between Harry Macansh and Jason Sangha accelerated the scoring rate and provided a highlight on what was otherwise a disappointing start to the carnival.

Round 2 – North Coast 3/102 (T Burvill 41*) def Newcastle 99 (D Morrison 3/10, T Burvill 2/13)

Newcastle again won the toss and elected to bat in a match reduced to a 30 overs-a-side format owing to a weather forecast of a 42 degree day. The Newcastle innings again didn’t reach any great highlights although Josh Pettigrew (20) and Logan Johnson (18) made starts. Newcastle was bowled out in the 28th over which would strangely come back to haunt them. Despite a lack of wickets, North Coast made heavy work of the run-chase and with 4 overs to play, they still required 30 to win the game. With wickets in hand, they achieved the target with 5 balls to spare despite desperate Newcastle fielding and bowling – a missed opportunity! Round 3 – Newcastle 9/176 (B McGill 85, R Brooks 27, A Purdevski 3/20, P Astill 2/22, M Phillips 2/30) def Illawarra 142 (D Constable 35, C Waldock 31, J Pettigrew 3/42, L Edwards 2/11, T Beatty 2/30)

After an overnight meeting emphasizing pride in performance and continual improvement, Newcastle lined up against the undefeated Illawarra team. Another toss win saw Newcastle bat first and Captain Bayley McGill batted through most of the innings to reach 85 with the other batsmen making worthwhile contributions around him. 176 was competitive however Illawarra had played very well in their opening two games and were 42 without loss at drinks. After the resumption Newcastle picked up wickets in groups through some excellent efforts in the field and solid line and length bowling to have the locals 3-69. The 4th, 5th and 6th wickets fell at 102 and the remaining 4 wickets fell for 10 runs leaving the eventual Final Winners 34 runs short - a good win by the Newcastle boys. Bayley McGill (Cardiff-Boolaroo) and Josh Pettigrew (Wallsend) were selected to attend the Country Boys Coaching Class in Sydney in April 2013; Tyson Beatty (Newcastle City) was selected as a shadow player for the camp. Bayley McGill won the Player’s Player Award for the tournament. I would like to thank Peter Edwards (Assistant Coach) and the parents who travelled to Nowra, who provided outstanding support throughout the carnival. Neil McDonald – Bradman Cup Coach, 2012-2013

KOOKABURRA CUP The Newcastle team for the Kookaburra Cup was selected from the various Under 14 and Under 13 Newcastle representative sides. After a number of training sessions, the squad travelled to the Manning Valley region for the carnival, which was held from 14-17 January 2013. Round 1 – North Coast 2/144 (K Prosper 84*, L Johnson 39) def Newcastle 8/140 (C Edstein-Boyes 43, J Sangha 25, Z Honeybrook 3/21, S Frost 2/28)

Newcastle batted and at 23 overs were 3-70, a half hour rain-break was taken and on resumption Newcastle managed to get to 140 runs in 46 overs. North Coast tightened the bowling and field placings in the second half of the innings, and managed to restrict the Newcastle total. Newcastle missed a number of chances in the field, but despite managing better in the second half of North Coast’s innings lost with only 3 overs to go. Round 2 - Central North 140 (C Cust 47, J Sangha 3/15, G Lea 2/9, R Droop 2/25) def Newcastle 90 (J Sangha 47*, R Meppem 3/15, N Trindall 2/8, J Tasker 2/8, T Scobie 2/23)

With more commitment and better tactics we restricted Central North to 140 runs; Jason Sangha was the best of the bowlers, taking 3-15 in 8 overs. Although we dipped in the middle of the innings it was a far better fielding and catching performance. In reply, only Jason Sangha (45*) offered any resistance and we were put out for 90 runs. With more positive batting we could have made a better fist of the run chase. Round 3 – Newcastle 6/175 (P Huolohan 42*, B Roberts 39, A Somerville 32*, T Engelbrecht 3/23, Z Blattner 2/33) def Southern 7/174 (C Dummer 74, K Evans 30, Z Mace 2/17, R Droop 2/22) With a marked improvement in the field Newcastle again pulled back a situation that could have resulted in chasing 220+ and bowled out Southern for 174. All of the bowlers did well, with each bowler sharing in the wickets; Zac Mace lead the attack with 2 for 17 from 8 overs. Newcastle batted with aggression and purpose and passed the Southern total with 5 overs to spare, the Captain Patrick Huolahan (42*) and Andrew Somerville (32*) bringing us home with a unfinished 74 run partnership. Overall, the progress made by the Squad from Day 1 through to Day 3 was excellent, although no batsman managed to score a 50 some notable performances were recorded with the bat and ball. In the end the players managed to become a good cricketing unit but we needed to start the way we finished. I would like to thank Bill Bannon (Assistant Coach) and Marino Lea (Manager) for their assistance throughout the carnival. Mike Mackenzie – Kookaburra Cup Coach, 2012/13

DE COURCY CLUB AND DE COURCY CUP The De Courcy Club was formed in 2009 with the aim of raising funds for a diverse range of cricket programs and charity organizations across Newcastle and NSW. Newcastle District clubs compete for the De Courcy Cup, with the holder of the Cup defending it during each round of the Commonwealth Bank Premiership. Hamilton-Wickham entered the 2012-2013 season as holders of the De Courcy Cup, and retained the Cup until Round 9 of the competition. The University club defeated Hamilton-Wickham, and held the Cup for seven rounds before losing their clash with Wests CC. Wests CC finished the 2012/2013 season as the winners of the De Courcy Cup. The NDCA greatly appreciates the De Courcy Club’s ongoing support of the De Courcy Cup and cricket in Newcastle. The De Courcy Club also held a successful Finals luncheon on Thursday 28 March 2013, with more than 200 guests attending the event which featured former Australian captain Ian Chappell and former Australian opening batsmen Simon Katich as guest speakers. The inaugural De Courcy Club scholarship was awarded to Cardiff-Boolaroo’s Bayley McGill. The luncheon was a great success, and is fast becoming a regular part of the Newcastle cricket calendar.

WARREN TENNANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE GAME AWARD

The Warren Tennant Awards are presented by the NDCA as a result of a gift left to the Association by long serving player and official Warren Tennant. Warren held a number of positions on various NDCA Committees, including serving some 26 years as Vice President of the Association. Warren’s generous support of cricket in Newcastle is continued through the Warren Tennant Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a young NDCA cricketer who is achieving at a high level in playing the game, plays according to the spirit of the game and is a good ambassador for both the NDCA and his grade club. The 2012/2013 Warren Tennant Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ben Evans (Charlestown). After making his First Grade debut during the 2011/2012 season, Ben continued his success during the past season, securing 17 wickets at an average of 19.76. Ben was selected in the Newcastle Senior Representative Squad prior to the 2012/2013 season, and represented Newcastle in the Country Cricket Championships in November 2012, taking 5 wickets in the carnival. Ben also represented the Newcastle Colts side with distinction.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2012-2013 Merewether secured the club championship for the 14th time on the final day of the 2012/2013 season. The final round of one day matches promised an exciting conclusion to the club championship, with Merewether and Hamilton-Wickham requiring wins in all four grades to guarantee success. Wests CC completed a stunning reversal in the club’s fortunes, and entered the final round with an outside chance of securing the Bramble Shield. Merewether were successful in all four of their matches against Wallsend, leaving Hamilton-Wickham needing victory in all four of their matches against the Belmont club to pass the Merewether total. Unfortunately, the wet weather which plagued the second half of the season again interfered with cricket, and no play was possible in the

SEASON REVIEW 2012-2013 BY JOSH LEESON

SEASON 2012-13 was the summer that the Lions continued to roar throughout Newcastle District Cricket. For the second consecutive season Merewether claimed the two-day premiership with a 31-run victory over a revived Western Suburbs. Merewether also defended their Twenty20 title with victory against Hamilton-Wickham and recovered from the disappointment of 2012 by winning their fourth SCG Country Cup against Albury-Wodonga. The only blemish to a clean sweep of all available silverware, was a lost to Hamwicks in the Tom Locker Cup final. Mark Cameron’s return to the Newcastle cricket with the Lions created headlines, plenty of buzz and nerves among the city’s batsmen. But it was Hamwicks all-rounder Sam Webber who again caused the most trouble for batsman, claiming 53 wickets at 11.38. His master-blasting also generated 467 runs at an average of 35.92 to win back-to-back Newcastle Herald cricketer of the year awards. Former NSW Second XI batsman Brett Jackson made a brilliant start to his captaincy career at Wallsend, toppling the batting aggregate with 729 runs at 72.9. Jackson’s season included two centuries and five fifties. Overall the bridge between the powerful and weaker clubs was exposed over the course of the season. Three distinct groups formed; the minor premiership contenders (Merewether, Hamwicks, University), fourth-spot contenders (Wests, Stockton-Terrace, Cardiff-Boolaroo) and the rest (Toronto Workers, Wallsend, Charlestown, Waratah-Mayfield, Belmont and Newcastle City). Led by captain Ben Woolmer and all-rounder Anthony Hobson, Wests became the feel-good story of the summer when they upset Hamwicks in the semi-finals to reach the two-day final against Merewether. Two seasons earlier the Rosellas failed to win a single game. Cardiff also bounced back from a win-less season to challenge for a semi-final berth. Charlestown and Belmont were both big disappointments. The Magpies fielded a largely unchanged batting line-up, but repeated collapses meant they recorded just three wins. At Cahill Oval, Belmont struggled with Mark Littlewood forced to carry the burden of an inexperienced side. On the representative front, Newcastle cricketers again starred in NSW’s success at the Australian Country Cricket Championships at Bundaberg. Uni fast bowler Josh Bennett took a tournament-high 22 wickets at an average of 13.32 and was later drafted into the ACT Comets Futures League squad. Other Novocastrians in the Bush Blues side were Simon Moore, Andrew Maher and Pat Darwen. At the NSW Country Championships at Belmont, Newcastle failed to reach the final after rain marred the tournament. Newcastle won their matches against North Coastal and Central Northern, but missed out due to their lower seeding. Western won the final over Central Coast.

COMMONWEALTH BANK FIRST GRADE PREMIERSHIP Hamilton-Wickham again retained the Commonwealth Bank Shield, finishing the 2012-2013 season as Minor Premiers in the First Grade competition. A number of dominant outright victories saw Hamilton-Wickham, Merewether and University surge clear of the pack in the early part of the season. Wet weather again affected the second half of the season, with a number of rounds reduced to one day matches. A one run victory over Merewether in Round 16 ultimately guaranteed a fourth consecutive minor premiership for the Hamilton-Wickham

club. By contrast, Wests CC secured the fourth semi-final position with victories over University and Cardiff-Boolaroo in the final two rounds of the regular season. The Semi Finals saw Hamilton-Wickham face off against Wests CC in excellent conditions at Passmore Oval. Batting first, Wests CC amassed a total of 272, with Anthony Hobson (96) and Aaron Wivell (56) the major contributors to that total. Hamilton-Wickham were restricted to 167, with captain Kirk Mullard (58) and Matt Trappel (41) the only batsmen to threaten the Rosellas. Bradley Aldous (3/37) and Scott Sharma (3/30) lead the Wests CC attack. A devastating spell of fast bowling from Mark Cameron (5/64) lead Merewether to a 25 run victory in the second semi-final played at No 1 Sportsground. Troy Goodwin’s innings of 78 was the major contribution to the Lions’ total of 192, before the Merewether attack reduced University to 5/26 on the first evening of the match. University’s Ian Slapp (65) lead a rearguard action before University were dismissed for 167. Friday 29 March and Saturday 30 March 2013 Merewether v Wests CC No 1 Sportsground, Newcastle After the second half of the season was affected by continued wet weather, it was no surprise that an overcast morning greeted the players at No 1 Sportsground. Having won the toss, Merewether captain Simon Moore elected to bat, and compiled a fluent half century to steer his side to the luncheon interval with the loss of just two wickets. Wests CC’s Peter Lojszczyk ripped through the Merewether middle order, claiming the scalps of Troy Goodwin and Pat Darwen to leave Merewether in some trouble. Although Moore and David Celep steadied the ship, their departure saw Merewether in a precarious position. A counter-attacking innings from Mark Cameron saw Merewether reach a total of 192, which was competitive in the relatively slow conditions. Cameron then claimed the wicket of Shaun Hassall before stumps to ensure that the match was evenly balanced heading into the second day. Todd Griffith and Rodhri Evans withstood the early onslaught on the second morning, and ensured that the Wests innings progressed steadily. An inspired spell from Dan Morton tore through the heart of Wests batting lineup, leaving the Rosellas precariously placed at 6/71. Chris Young lead a lower order fightback, but Wests were ultimately unable to overhaul the Merewether total, as the Lions retained the Dr EP Barbour Shield with a 31 run victory. Mark Cameron was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance of 51 and 3/59.

SCG COUNTRY CUP The Newcastle Zone again enjoyed a successful SCG Country Cup competition, culminating in Merewether’s success in the final at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Hamilton-Wickham club also enjoyed a prosperous SCG Country Cup campaign, reaching the Semi Finals before suffering a close defeat at the hands of Cricket Albury-Wodonga. TOM LOCKER CUP The Tom Locker Cup competition was again hard fought, with Merewether and Hamilton-Wickham only securing positions in the Final after wins in their final preliminary matches against Wallsend and Belmont respectively. The competition saw some outstanding individual achievements, with Rhys Gallen securing the remarkable figures of 6 wickets for 6 runs in 9 overs against Merewether. His effort was matched by Mark Cameron, who took 6 wickets for just 10 runs as Merewether defended their total of 67 to win the match. Wallsend’s Brett Jackson (108*) and Scott Beveridge (100*) combined for a 193 run partnership against Cardiff-Boolaroo at Cardiff Oval; however, the CB’s had the last laugh, overhauling Wallsend’s total of 3/257 as Gautam Gandha scored 6 runs from the final three deliveries of the match. Merewether v Hamilton-Wickham Sunday 17 March 2013 No 1 Sportsground, Newcastle Having elected to bat, Hamilton-Wickham found the going tough against a hostile and accurate Merewether attack. Having been reduced to 4/35, the Ham-Wicks middle order fought to accumulate a competitive total. Patient innings from Rhys Hanlon and Matt Trappel took Hamilton-Wickham past the century mark, before captain Kirk Mullard added a quick fire 36 to take his team to a competitive total of 9/187. The Hamilton-Wickham attack applied pressure to the Merewether batting line-up from the beginning, with the absence of Andrew Maher proving no obstacle. A resolute half-century from captain Simon Moore kept the Lions hopes alive, but his run out saw the innings fold as Hamilton-Wickham secured the Tom Locker Cup by 39 runs.

NDCA T20 COMPETITION Waratah-Mayfield were again the surprise packets of the NDCA First Grade T20 Competition in season 2012/2013. Having qualified for the Semi Finals in 2011/2012, the Tahs repeated the dose to qualify as the best performed team in Pool A of the competition. An unfortunate washout of the final round of preliminary matches meant that Belmont and University were eliminated from the competition on net run rate despite not having lost a match in the competition. Hamilton-Wickham’s Sam Webber again displayed his talent in compiling a ferocious century against Stockton; the innings of 108* included 10 sixes and 5 fours. Merewether captain Simon Moore saved his best performance for the Final of the T20 competition, scoring an imperious 95 to guide Merewether to an above par total of 7/166. In an interesting move, Mark Cameron was not used

with new ball; the decision paid off when he claimed the wicket of Sam Webber for 0, and Merewether proceeded to secure victory by some 67 runs. SECOND GRADE The Second Grade competition was closely fought in season 2012/2013. The talented Wests CC team raced out of the blocks, with three outright wins in the first five rounds taking the Rosellas to a clear lead in the competition. Merewether overcame a slow start to the season to again reach the finals, with a number of outright victories identifying them as the team most likely to challenge Wests. A revitalized Cardiff-Boolaroo team lost only two matches all season, but only qualified for the Semi Finals on the final day of the season. University also waited

until the last round to secure fourth place, with a bonus point win allowing them to sneak past Toronto Workers DC on quotient. Whilst it was not surprising that Wests and Merewether reached the Final, the two sides had a contrasting Semi Final experience. While Merewether easily accounted for Cardiff-Boolaroo at Townson Oval, Wests were reduced to 8/92 by University before No 10 Anthony Young struck a polished 92* to lead his team to safety. The Final was played to much the same script, with Merewether taking early wickets in defence of their total of 157. Young again showed great composure, with his innings of 39* steering Wests to a nail biting victory.

THIRD GRADE Wests CC dominated the Third Grade competition, reaching the Final without suffering defeat. The remaining teams seemed evenly matched, with Newcastle City emerging from a nail biting Semi Final victory over Charlestown to host the Third Grade final at Learmonth Park. Both teams found scoring difficult in the Final, with Wests reaching a total of 97 from 49 overs. Newcastle City took advantage of the time afforded them, and scored the winning runs in the 65th over of their innings. Wests made City work hard for their victory, with Chad Sutton securing

the figures of 6/48 from some 32 overs to lead the frugal Wests CC attack. Third Grade Final – Learmonth Park Newcastle City 7/98 (R Hungerford 30, C Sutton 6/48) def Wests CC 97 (C Malone 26, M Gray 5/29, Q Fowler 3/14)

FOURTH GRADE The Fourth Grade competition was closely fought in the past season, with the Minor Premiership and finals qualification only determined on completion of the final round of the competition. Toronto Workers DC emerged as the Minor Premiers, which was a just reward for a season of consistent performances. Charlestown and University were also rewarded for solid seasons with a semi-final birth. By contrast, Merewether required a double bonus point win to sneak into the fourth semi-final position. Merewether were able to progress to the

Final by defeating the minor premiers, whilst Charlestown proved much too strong for University in the second semi-final. The Final was a tense, low scoring affair, with the Merewether lower order managing to grind their way past the Charlestown total; Mitchell Piller’s composed innings of 11* ultimately proved the difference between the two sides in an excellent match. Fourth Grade Final – Kahibah Oval Merewether 9/93 (K Ramkumar 38, D Sharpe 3/17, D Brown 3/29) def Charlestown 92 (T O’Brien 4/26, M Forster 3/8, A Palmer 2/6)

DENIS BROAD OAM CUP The Denis Broad OAM Cup competition again proved popular, with all clubs reporting significant interest amongst players in the competition. Despite struggling in the Second and Third Grade competitions, Belmont were able to field a strong side in all Denis Broad OAM Cup matches. University, Merewether and Wests CC all boasted experienced sides, and each qualified for the Semi Finals with relative ease. Both Semi Finals were closely contested, with Belmont prevailing over University, whilst Merewether accounted for Wests. The destructive Belmont batting line up took advantage of friendly conditions at No 1 Sportsground in the Final, taking just 15 overs to chase down Merewether’s total of 8/125. Final - Belmont v Merewether – No 1 Sportsground, Newcastle Belmont 2/126 (J Short 59, C Brauer 32) def Merewether 8/125 (C Moulton 32, M Richards 26, B Richardson 4/23, J Short 2/15)

UNDER 21 COMPETITION Some of the finest young cricketers in Newcastle were on display in the Under 21 Competition during the past season. A number of fine individual performances were recorded in the competition, with three batsmen completing centuries in the round robin matches. Amongst the best performed players in the competition was Toronto Workers DC captain Josiah McCredie, who was awarded the Robert Holland Trophy in recognition of his achievements in the competition. An unfortunate sequence of wet weekends made it impossible for the Semi Finals of this competition to be played, with Wests CC and Charlestown eliminated from the competition as a result. The Toronto Workers DC side was a formidable unit, which ultimately accounted for Newcastle City in the Final of the

competition to secure the Bert Atkin Shield for the second time in the past four seasons.

UNDER 15 T20 COMPETITION The 2012/2013 season saw the NDCA further develop the “club T20 day” concept through the addition of an Under 15 T20 competition. Designed to further encourage senior-junior club linkage, the competition appeared to have the desired effect, with large crowds observed at a number of matches. The standard of cricket in the competition was quite high, with a number of players relishing the opportunity to play on better quality wickets on First Grade grounds. A number of players registered significant individual performances, with Charlestown’s Hayden Moore registering an impressive 96* against Waratah-Mayfield, and Cardiff-Boolaroo’s Brett Spierings delivering 4 maidens in a remarkable performance in his club’s victory over Wallsend in the Semi Finals. The Final of the competition was no exception, with Hamilton-Wickham and Cardiff-Boolaroo players fighting out a nail-biting match at No 1 Sportsground on Monday 3 March 2013. Cardiff-Boolaroo elected to bat first, but struggled to find any rhythm in posting a total of just 78 runs. A high standard of bowling and fielding made life difficult for the Hamilton-Wickham side, who remained cool under pressure to pass the Cardiff-Boolaroo total on the last ball of the match.
