It is my pleasure to present the Annual Report of the Organisation for the Year 2018 on behalf of the members, staff, partners, well wishers and programme participants of NAZIR. We completed 30 years of journey in providing services to the poor, marginalized and disadvantaged section of the society including victims and people under threat of social decadency. We feel that the coming time will more challengeable for us as a social development organisation because the world is going to face most devastating situation of climate change and hunger. Climate change is increasingly and simultaneously eroding the livelihoods, assets and access to natural resources and services for poor and marginalized people, while at the same time eroding their capacity to cope with climate change effect, crises and adopt sustainable solutions. In this context the role of developmental organisations at the grass root level is more challenging and important to develop a relevant sustainable development strategy for poor. Capitalizing on its experience and on the basis of learning, NAZIR as a voluntary social development organization, pledged to dedicate in the task planned for the poor and marginalized people in line with the mission and vision of the organization to achieve the purpose of socio-economic development and bring out a positive change in the lives of members of the community. We are happy that our sincere effort in strengthening the livelihoods through natural resource management has gained appreciation, which would enable us to replicate it in new locations. In the year 2018 NAZIR implemented number of projects with the aim of improving lives of poor and marginalized people. The programmes of micro-lending for women, agriculture, education, water and sanitation, rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, vulnerable group development, trainings and awareness campaigns functioned very satisfactorily and still on its continuity; thereby creating a positive change in the lives of the target people. It might not have yet totally eradicated the poverty, illiteracy and disabilities but the beginning of positive change in the entirety has been very evident and steadfast. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks and gratitude to the stakeholders in our operational area including donors, support and cooperating agencies such as- General and EC members of the organisation, Local Government Authorities, Social and Community leaders and general community people including programme participants and of course the staff members of NAZIR for their effort, kind support and cooperation in implementing the programmes successfully and effectively. The year ahead beckon us for dedicated action and commitment to bring the changes we have envisaged. With Solidarity-

Short description of Projects implemented in the year 2018:

Background:

Access to financial services for the poor people is scarce in Bangladesh. Traditional financial institutions, mainly banks were not serving the poor people as they do not have ability to mortgage any asset against loan. Introducing Microfinance Program has been able to bring economical self-dependency among poor and ultra poor families, which making a significant change in their lifestyle. NAZIR is implementing this project in partnership with PKSF (Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation). (Group Meeting) NAZIR‟s micro-credit programme divided into 4 categories such as: JAGORON (Rural Microcredit) AGROSOR (Micro Enterprise), BUNIAD (Ultra Poor), SUFOLON (Seasonal Loan Scheme), and in which large numbers of members are women and small portion of members are men.

NAZIR also encourage and facilitate the micro credit group members for savings in order to create their own resource base by opening savings account in the bank.

(Savings & Loan collection by group approach)

Objective of the Project:

The overall objective of the project is: Poverty reduction through economical empowerment by providing life skill training and micro-credit support.

To achieve the objectives supporting and empowering the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Rural Poor Women (RPW) regardless of age and gender to live a life on their full potential, NAZIR established a Resource Centre (a residential training and therapy centre with required therapy and training equipment). The Embassy of Japan in Dhaka, Bangladesh provided financial support to establish the Resource Centre including construction of building. As yet 1567 persons with different types of disabilities have been provided with free clinical and therapy services, assistive devices; livelihood, vocational and life skill training and social awareness on a planned basis. In the year 2018, NAZIR has given Primary Rehabilitation Therapy (PRT) to 367 physically disabled children. In the middle of the year, NAZIR has provided 16 assistive devices (12 wheel chairs and 04 tricycles) to persons with disabilities. In Addition to that, Thirty One (31) adults disabled received free therapy using Ultrasound Machine, Vibrator and application of traction in NAZIR Physiotherapy Department.

There were also 385 participants with different disabilities attended the structured trainings given by NAZIR at the Training Center on life skill and livelihood education such as homestead gardening, cattle-rearing, fishing and organic farming (vermi-compost). NAZIR also provided referral services for Specialized Medical Treatment and Advanced Therapy. Disability awareness and follow up services also have been given.

In addition NAZIR distributed Blankets and Sapling free of cost among Persons with Disabilities and poor people.

Background:

Since 2013, NAZIR extended its partnership with HarvestPlus Bangladesh where, human, physical and financial capacity was built throughout the implementation process of previous phases. Therefore, there is a scope to continue working together for Delivery of Zinc Rice in Bangladesh. In view of sustainability, this partnership approach is now proved, where targeted people (farmers) and relevant partners/stakeholders are directly involved sharing their own resources. Under this seed uptake project, farmer‟s participation has been ensured in this extended project in order to develop post-harvest technologies. They are now more aware about moisture percentage in seed and preservation of seed in the airtight container.

It was our observation in Delivery of Zinc Rice in Bangladesh seed uptake project where woman were involved more than 50% of rice production & processing and after receiving training, they have been comparatively more aware and active to keep them in right track with post-harvest operation.

It has been proved in the process of implementation of this project in the previous phases that using conventional technologies, it is cost-effective and effective in reducing the post-harvest loses rather than in cooperate a new technologies for more production. This is not only cost effective but useful to protect environmental degradation as well as increase and ensure women participation.

Malnutrition rates in Bangladesh are among the highest in the world, affecting especially women and children. Poverty and food and nutrition insecurity are closely linked in Bangladesh. Landlessness combined with lack of employment opportunities restrict the access of many poor to adequate nutrition, leading in turn to poor health status and reduced ability to work.

Presently, rice is cultivated in almost 77 per cent of total cropped areas in Bangladesh for supplying about 75 per cent of total food requirements of the population. Rice provides 20% of the world‟s dietary energy supply. Rice consumption also varies by income-dependency. In Asia rice provides 50% to 80% of all the calories of poor households, in Bangladesh it is about 78%.

Rice is not only a source of energy, but also the major source of protein, and a significant source of essential micronutrients. When the rice is a large proportion of the diet, and when the diversity of the diet is limited, as is the true for millions living in poverty, especially in Bangladesh. In a report it is pointed out that over 40% children over five are stunted while in an estimated 44% children of the same age group are at risk of zinc deficiency.

In this circumstance, Bangladesh Rice Institute (BRRI) attempted to develop quality and nutritious rice variety like Vitamin A, Zn & Fe enriched verities. As a result, BRRI released Zn enriched BRRI dhan62, BRRI dhan64, BRRI dhan72, BRRI dhan74 and BRRI dhan84 that can supplement Zn in daily diet as resource for poor and vulnerable farmers of

Bangladesh. Hence, easy access to seed of Zn enriched rice varieties and production support need to make available to the farmers for partial fulfilment of the Zn deficiency.

This project is contributing to improve food and nutrition security by the enhanced and sustained rice productivity through promotion of zinc enriched modern rice varieties.

Objective of the Project:

The overall objective of the project is: “Transfer improved technology and knowledge among target group on use of chemical free fertilizer to prevent environmental degradation and production and extension of high zinc rice verities to supplement food deficiency.”

Project Activities:

a) Motivate farmers for intensive use of land and plant trees to protect environmental degradation.

b) Motivate farmers to use compost/cow dung, Vermi-compost, Green manuring and less or no use of chemical fertilizer to preserve soil fertility.

c) Transfer improved technology/set-up of demonstration plots to promote knowledge and skill of farmers in producing High Zinc Supplemented Rice.

d) Establish home gardening round the year for own consumption and extra income.

e) Extension of High Zinc Rice. This project is covering both T. Aman (Rain fed) and Boro (Irrigated) seasons in the areas identified and targeted. The project intended to demonstrate and create awareness on adopting Zinc Rice among the end users using conventional technology and practice on the seed production and dissemination incorporating with the Govt. and USAID/EU funded project through IRRI. According to the objective the project selected some plots to provide direct support including preparation of demo plot, providing technical support and free seed. And provided only free seed to some farmers to cultivate Zn. Rice in their plots; those have been followed up by the project.

The achievement against target covering both the season is given in the table below:

Training and capacity building

Conducting training for farmers is a key component of the project. In the year 2018 the project conducted need–based training to enhance capacity of the beneficiaries in adopting technologies. However, issues and problems, if faced and raised by the farmers, has been discussed during Demo Plot visit. NAZIR has arranged 6 training sessions for 6 batches in different venues and 150 participants attended the training. Among them 11 are female. Seed preservation

The seed preservation is one of the very important issues to cultivate next season. The project discussed and informed to all farmers during training, uthan boithok and school meetings that how to preserve seed using conventional technology.

Seed preservation using poly bag.

SUCCESS CASE STORY (Boro Season)

BRRI dhan74 is a hope and bless variety for farmer

Mr. Nitta Ranjon Ray, Taluk Shakhati, Madati, kaliganj, Lalmonirhat is a small farmer. He has

only 0.60/ha land including homestead. He is an early adaptor and community motivator farmer.

Due to climate changed the BRRI dhan28 and 29 are not suitable for Boro season. He has

known from medias the Zinc rich verities is a nutritive and disease resistance verity in the Boro

season. He asked to SAAO for seed availability, SAAO suggested him to communicate with

NAZIR representative for getting this varieties seed. He has collected mobile number of Agril.

Coordinator, NAZIR and contact accordingly. The Agril. Coordinator has arranged a small

meeting at yard of Mr. Nitta Ranjon Ray where 30 farmers were participated. After discussion

they have motivated to cultivate Zinc enrich rich verities. There were 10 farmers received BRRI

dhan74 and 20 farmers received BRRI dhan62. Before crop condition and yield they did not

believe the both varieties is better than existing varieties. During cultivation period he has found

the nearby BRRI dhan28 100% damaged by Neck Blast but BRRI dhan74 and 62 is Neck Blast

free. After crop cutting he has got 8.33 t/ha and BRRI dhan62 6.66 t/ha yield. The Demo.plot was

the road side and plot was disease free. The interested farmers asked him the name of variety

and how way to get this variety. He has suggested the all interested farmers the name of variety

and source of seed. Also he advice them to collect seed from him and others Demo farmers.

Now he is very much satisfied for getting these varieties and said the both varieties are future

hope and bless for farmers instead of BRRI dhan28 and 29.
