In 2005 steady progress was made towards the goal of building expansion. The Board of Governors brought new focus to the task of plotting the museum’s future. The completion of the Summary Facilities Master Plan provided a pathway to the future evolution of the Speed’s plans. Collection growth, the evolution of Wallace-funded family outreach programs, the renovation of the Laramie L. Leatherman Art Learning Center, and completion of building renovations were all landmarks. The outward orientation of a “listening” institution, a product of the Wallace Grant, has had a material effect in the Museum’s core decision making.
Making Steady Progress
COLLECTIONS AND CURATORIAL
The collection is at the heart of the Speed Art Museum. The works of art that are at the museum forever are the ones that ultimately come to defi ne the institution, provide favorite stopping points in visits to the galleries, and offer op-portunities for research, study, and delight. 2005 provided opportunities to see works of art in a variety of telling juxtapositions and contexts, in lending to other institutions, and in stretching the minds of visitors through the quality of the objects, their diversity of media and range in time and place of origin.
Works of art were added to the collection from a 3000 year sweep of art history, beginning with an Egyptian faience Ushabti (ca. 1070 BCE) to a 2005 glass instal-lation by MacArthur Fellow, Teresita Fernandez. A com-plete list of the more than 800 works appears on pages 12–20 of this publication. As the size, importance, and variety of the collection continues to grow, it becomes an ever-greater resource for the Speed’s varied audiences.
2005 was also marked by progress in growth of the permanent collection database. All works of art acquired from 1930 to the present have been entered–a total of 13,000 objects inputted. The curatorial
staff has made major progress towards completion of the col-lection handbook, scheduled to go to press in December 2006. Software has been se-lected for KOAR, the Kentucky On-line Art Resource, that is a key project of the Kentucky Heritage Initiative.
EDUCATION AND FAMILY PROGRAMS
The renovation of the Laramie L. Leatherman Art Learning Center, Art Sparks, was the signal accomplishment of the year in Education. This was a massive undertaking involving numerous logistical and technical challenges. The result is an engaging and innovative learning and play environment with refreshed
exhibits and a special focus on the 2 to 5 year old audience for Planet Preschool.
The goals for the renovation were to increase opportunities for creative expression by children and to strengthen connections to the museum’s collection. The new “Hands-On Art Room” provides an opportunity for children to make art at the Speed whenever the museum is open–a fi rst for the Speed. A new rotating Education Gallery showcases student creativity from museum-sponsored collaborations and lets visitors explore ideas about art.
The Speed has made signifi cant advances in fi lling in the blank spaces in our chart of the future. More than mere bulleted lists, the museum has made major progress in crafting an attainable vision for the future. Our ideas have not been created in a vacuum, but tested with audience evaluations and hard economic projections. We have a solid list of needs, and are moving rapidly towards fi nding out what our opportunities are in the fundraising arena.
The museum can take great pride in its collection growth, advances in education, progress in raising higher levels of revenue, and other areas of endeavor, as this report attests.

University use of the Museum is rising and after a year of planning, the Speed has launched a pilot program with the University of Louisville in observational skills for medi-cal students using objects from the collection. The University’s art department offered a course for graduate students on serving as tour guides at the museum. A number of pub-lic programs such as lectures and fi lms were cosponsored between the Museum and Uni-versity of Louisville.
The MetLife program with Jefferson Community College is now in its second year. The program introduces new audi-ences to the Speed through JCC. In the fi rst year, fi ve JCC students were trained as docents to give tours to their classmates. Museum educa-tors also worked with faculty, through presentations and private consultation, to help them incorporate the collection into the curriculum.
Art Explorers, now in its fi fth year, is a highly custom-ized partnership between the museum and three local schools, Thomas Jefferson Middle
School, Field Elementary and Noe Middle School. This multi-visit program includes teacher training and student tasks in art making, writing and self-expres-sion.
The school program continues to offer professional develop-ment programs to area teachers from Jefferson County Public Schools, private schools and the Archdiocese Schools. This year the program also traveled to Western Kentucky for a series of professional development sessions at the Janice Mason Museum in Cadiz.
The Youth Apprentice Pro-gram, now in its third year, trains high school students in the ways of the museum and the non-profi t world, and provides employment opportunities with the Speed’s summer camps. This year’s Youth Apprentice students made presentations at over 35 community sites for their “Show Me the Monet” pre-sentation. Education programs at the Speed provide national and international models, and Education Department staff is in demand as lecturers and authors for professional meetings and publications. Education Depart-ment members made presenta-
tions at the American Associa-tion of Museums, the National Art Education Association and the J. Paul Getty Trust Sympo-sium on interactivity.

Featuring seventy acclaimed works by some of America’s most popular and regarded painters, the Speed presented Tales from the Easel: American Narrative Paintings from Southeastern Museum circa 1800–1950, in collaboration with the Columbus Museum of Art. Selected from prominent southeastern museums and organized by themes reflecting the American story, Tales from the Easel offered tantalizing works by Vedder, Homer, Benson, Hassam, Lawrence and Andrew Wyeth among others.
Sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc. and BellSouth the Real Yellow Pages, Tales from the Easel was augmented by a series of lectures, writing workshops and author readings.
Telling Tales: American Storytelling Art from Kentucky Collections
SEPTEMBER 14–DECEMBER 12, 2004
Telling Tales: American Storytelling Art from Kentucky Collections brought a local focus to Tales from the Easel. Organized by the Speed, Telling Tales included paintings, sculpture, drawings and photographs drawn from area collections and the museum’s holdings.
Storytelling through art offers nearly limitless opportunities, including literature, folk tales, family lore, history, community and domestic life, childhood, agrarian and urban events, politics and fantasy. From Revenaugh’s recently conserved Newsboy to Rogers’s Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii, Speed guests viewed a wide array of tales with local connections.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS HELP FAMILIES MAKE CONNECTIONS WITH ART
The Speed’s Mission State-ment could describe the Education Department’s daily activities: to discover, togeth-er, with our communities, the joy and power of great art. From school tours to family tours of the Speed collec-tion and special exhibitions to our monthly Families First programs and special summer camps and the Art Learning
Center, the Speed offers families a forum to discover great art.
Tailor-made for school groups and families, Speed education programs provide a diverse palette of opportunities to interact with art. Staples, such as the Art Learning
Center and school tours, offer an informal and informative structure for studying art and creativity. Special programs, such as the Frontier Family Days held in conjunction with the Capturing Western Leg-ends: Russell and Remington’s Canadian Frontier exhibi-tion, bring together surprising activities that can broaden the understanding about a specific exhibition.
Support for the Speed’s educational programming is provided through grants from the Kentucky Arts Council, a
state agency; Kentucky Department of Education; E.ON.US The Norton Foun-dation; The Gheens Founda-tion; The Gilbert Foundation; The Cralle Foundation; The Sullivan Foundation and Target.
Families First Days are free through the generous support of Yum! Brands; Norton Foun-dation; Community Foundation of Louisville; Cralle Founda-tion; E.ON.US.; Kentucky Arts Council; Louisville Metro Government; Target Stores and members of the Speed Art Museum.
Children from across the state enjoyed school tours and Family Frontier Days at the Speed.
From its popular camps to the Speed’s specially-themed family programs, area families rely on the museum to spice up their summers.

RETURNS TO THE 1927 GALLERIES
Following Potential Images of the World, the exhibition of Speed contemporary acquistions that filled the original 1927 galleries, the museum installed both old favorites and new eighteenth- and nineteenth-century works.
Many major works in the collection by artists returned such as Boucher, Labille-Guiard, Nattier, Gainsborough, Peale, Corot, Sully, Cabanel, Inness, Monet, Manship, Tissot and Cassatt. These old favorites were joined by new acquisitions including an unidentified full-length English portrait with accompanying leather coat and sword, an Arts and Crafts carved and painted chest, a liqueur set by Pickard China Studio and several art pottery pieces. The installation of the Kentucky Collection highlighted the Speed’s leading role in collecting and researching the commonwealth’s important visual history, primarily from the 1800s.
Emphasis was placed on American art in order to showcase new research conducted on the collection, which was funded by a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.
The reinstallation of the Speed’s collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century art, a new emphasis on American art highlights new research on the museum’s collection.

HENRY LUCE FOUNDATION GRANT SUPPORTED IMPORTANT WORK
The three year American Collections Enhancement Project, funded by a gen-erous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, concluded during the October 1, 2004–September 30, 2005 fiscal year. The Speed collaborated with some of the leading scholars in American art in researching 57 of its American paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. In addition, more than 50 of the pieces were photographed. The research and the images were prepared for inclusion on the museum’s website and will be used in the upcoming museum handbook.
Works ranged across the museum’s collection and included Thomas Cole’s Finished Study of a Tree, Eliahu Vedder’s sculpture The Boy, Thomas Ball’s bronzes of Henry Clay and Daniel Webster and Frederick Bridgman’s painting Funeral of a Mummy.
One work, Frederic Remington’s The Mountain Man, was “rediscovered” in time to be included in the Capturing Western Legends: Russell and Reming-ton’s Canadian Frontier exhibition. Following Remington’s death in 1909, numerous casts were made of Remington’s famous sculptures. Casts made during the artist’s lifetime and under his supervision are most desired by collectors and museums. The Speed’s sculpture had been previously unknown to scholars, bringing into question its authen-ticity. Electron microscope examination of the composition of the bronze was suggested by Remington scholar Michael Greenbaum.
Thanks to this test and Mr. Greenbaum’s expertise, we now know that the Speed’s Mountain Man is the previously unlocated cast num-ber 13. Its discovery marked not only an important milestone for the museum, but for Remington scholarship.

The Speed’s famous Laramie L. Leatherman Art Learning Center, popu-larly known as Art Sparks, closed August 22, 2005 for a major renovation.
Since it opened in 1997, more than 140,000 young visitors played, painted and learned in the region’s only interac-tive art gallery.
The renovation was extensive. More than 15 new activities were introduced in the interactive gallery, including a new Planet Preschool, Hands-On-Art studio, Media Play computer interactive system and an Education Gallery. Fresh paint,
new carpet and upgraded lighting were added throughout the entire facility.
The Art Sparks renovation capped a lengthy planning process. Speed educators spent more than one- and one-half years developing the new features while reviewing current research and the gallery’s seven years of data about interactive education.

Every year, the Speed selects objects from its collection for conservation. In each instance, the work needs meticulous attention in order to return it to a museum-quality state. We thank our donors for providing the funds that help us maintain our collections for today and the future.

Lending a HandTHE ALLIANCE HELPS MAKE THE SPEED WORK!
The Alliance Is the Volunteer Organization of the Speed and is more than 400 members strong. Alliance volunteers have played a vital role in the museum for many years and continue to assist in many aspects of museum operation, including greeting visitors, co-sponsoring educational program-ming, supporting staff, organizing special events such as the Speed Museum Ball each March, and planning exciting travel opportunities for museum members. The volunteer docent corps provides tours to adults and children throughout the year. During fiscal year 2005, the Speed’s docents gave tours to over 2,000 adults and over 7,000 children.
Docents as of September 30, 2005 The museum is grateful for the contributions of all its volunteers and for their hard work and dedication.

Alliance member and docent Pat Broecker staffed one of the museum’s new Gallery Carts. The carts have become popular focal points at the museum for guests eager to learn more about the Speed’s permanent collection.
The 33rd Speed Art Museum Ball, which was sponsored by JRA Architects, entertained hundreds of museum supporters with an Art Deco-inspired theme. Music by the Todd Hildreth Jazz Trio and New York’s Hank Lane Revue (left) filled the museum with music.
Operating expenses for the Speed’s physical plant and security (less depreciation), curatorial activities, exhibi-tions, education and outreach, development, marketing and public relations, administration, and auxiliary activities were over $6 million.

R. ALEX RANKINTreasurer, Board of Governors
THE SPEED ART MUSEUM has been the beneficiary of gifts from a number of donors whose generosity has shaped the museum. Mrs. Hattie Bishop Speed, the Speed’s first donor, built the museum in memory of her husband, James Breckinridge Speed, and left a collection of art and artifacts. In 1996, a bequest from Mrs. Alice Speed Stoll, J. B. Speed’s granddaughter, gave the Speed financial stability and the ability to upgrade operations and its art collection. The Board of Governors secured Mrs. Stoll’s bequest in an endowment, the returns from which may be used as the board directs, and in an acquisitions trust, the returns from which are used for acquisitions.
The Speed’s board has approved a policy that a percentage of the market value of endowed funds, calculated using a 12-quarter rolling average, may be used to support operations annually. This amount is utilized to partially support the annual operations.
In addition to income generated from the endowment, which supports the maintenance of the collection and the building, the Speed receives programmatic support from a number of generous individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies. These additional funds allow the Speed to provide programming and exhibitions for the community.
HIGHLIGHTS
THE ALICE SPEED STOLL Trust, the returns from which are used for the acquisition of works of art based on a plan approved by the Board of Governors, was valued at $18,142,254.
The Speed’s operating endowment, the returns from which are used for museum needs, was valued at $58,705,464. The Speed raised over $3 million for operations from do-nations–annual fund, exhibition and program sponsorships, cor-porate and individual member-ships, grants and memorials–and from earned income.
