2013-2014 Central Catholic High School Annual Report 3

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPALThank you for your generosity and continued support of Central Catholic High School!

As you can see from the picture on this page, the 2013-2014 school year was one of transition. As we said goodbye to Mrs. Allen, I wrapped up my time as Junior Theology teacher and started preparing for the privilege and challenge of leading Central Catholic High School.

We continued to expand the technology available to our students and faculty as we rolled out “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) to our fresh-men and juniors. Students bring any device capable of accessing the Internet and use it in our classrooms. As we began the current school year, every student and teacher was working in our BYOD program. The availability of the Internet to our teachers and students has transformed our classrooms into dynamic learning centers capable of keeping up with information from around the world.

We also upgraded our website to make it more compatible with mobile technology; please explore and let us know what you think about www.blmcchs.org. We look forward to launching a new portal for our Alumni before the summer. This will allow Alumni to connect or reconnect with the school and fi nd information about their classmates and fellow Alumni.

Another highlight was our Boys’ Basketball team’s run to a State Championship. Their impressive road to the championship included playoff victories over the number one, two, and three ranked teams in the state and a triple-overtime victory over the pre-season number one team in the State Championship.

I hope you will take a few minutes to look through this report and pay particular attention to our “Points of Pride” on page 5. There is some inspiring information there that we hope you will share on our behalf.

Continue to pray for the mission of Central Catholic to bring Christ to those within and outside our walls. This community is one I am thankful to be a part of and my hope is that each one of us can share that with others. Thank you for your support- you are in our prayers.

Peace,

Sean Foster

Our PhilosophyCentral Catholic High School offers a challenging education based on Christian princi-ples to the Bloomington-Normal community. The institution provides a career and col-lege preparatory curriculum that addresses the needs of all students, while integrating Catholic/Christian values and moral ethics. The educational program is designed for each student to have the opportunity to realize academic excellence.

Central Catholic acknowledges parents as the primary teachers of faith and values. With their support, the administration and staff are committed to reinforcing the stu-dents’ attitudes of Christian service, respect for life and responsibility to one’s self and the community at large. Opportunities to witness our faith arise through planned classroom activities as well as through co-curricular events.

As a family-oriented faith community, we involve students, parents, faculty, staff, ad-ministration, alumni and parishes. Our students draw upon these resources for the necessary guidance and support to deepen their faith and become informed, contrib-uting members of the Church and society.

Central Catholic High School is a diocesan high school sponsored by the Diocese of Peoria. We are an incorporated nonprofi t 501(c)3 organization. Contributions to Central Catholic High School, where no goods or service were exchanged, are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

Our Mission As a Christ-centered community, rooted in the Catholic faith, Central Catholic High School promotes lifelong learning, along with spiritual, personal and academic excel-lence in a safe environment while fostering respect, responsibility and integrity.

Bloomington’s fi rst Catholic school, St. Joseph’s Academy for Girls, was organized back in 1864. It continued in existence until 1925. In 1875, Holy Trinity Parish opened St. Mary’s Grade School to serve all students. A new building was started in 1884, and was altered in 1886 to include St. Mary’s High School. In 1898, two students com-pleted their high school studies and became the fi rst graduates of St. Mary’s High School. The full debt on that building was paid off in 1909. The high school program was recognized by Illinois State University and the University of Illinois in 1912. Twenty seniors graduated that year.

On Labor Day, September 3, 1928, a new building located at 712 North Center Street was completed and dedicated at a total cost of $28,000. Trinity High School, now an affi liate of Holy Trinity Parish, opened its doors to the fi rst students on Septem-ber 10, 1928, and 59 seniors graduated that June. The high school was granted accreditation by the North Central Association in 1929. Sinsinawa Do-minicans served on the faculty during these years.

In 1954, there was a $300,000 fund drive to fi nance two additions to the high school The additions were to allow growth at the high school level and ease the overcrowding of neighboring Holy Trinity Grade School. A cafeteria and south annex were built. Both grade and high school students shared the use of the cafeteria. The annex was used for Holy Trinity’s 7th and 8th grade classrooms and later housed the CCHS math and physical edu-cation departments after Holy Trinity built a new grade school.

In 1969, the high school became a diocesan school under the new name of Central Catholic serving students from Holy Trinity, St. Mary’s, St. Patrick’s Parish of Bloomington and Epiphany Parish of Normal, as well as those from surrounding areas.

An $11 million Capital Campaign to build a new Central Catholic High School began in 2001 after it became apparent that renovating the old building

on Center Street was not cost effective and a gift of land was given to the Diocese of Peoria. Pres-ently, Central Catholic High School is located on a 15-acre site on Airport Road adjacent to McGraw Park—a 2-phase park developed by the City of Bloomington. The new CCHS opened its doors to students on August 25, 2003.

Today, Central Catholic has an enrollment of 331 students and is supported through tuition and fees, assessments from the six parishes (which now includes St. Patrick of Merna and St. Mary’s , Downs), several major fundraisers and donations made to the Central Catholic High School Founda-tion which was established in 1977.

From 1898 to 1928, 406 students graduated from St. Mary’s High School. 2,482 students graduated from Trinity High School from 1929 to 1967. From 1968 to the present year, 3,668 have graduated from Central Catholic High School for a grand total of 6,556 graduates.

10 Central Catholic High School Annual Report 2013-2014

I’ll start by saying Thank You to all of you! Your commitment to CCHS and your willingness to support us is truly appreciated. Putting this report together becomes more meaningful each year that I’m here. The names become a bit more familiar and the connections that we have to each other and to the community become even more apparent.

One of the main charges I was given when I started in this position in September, 2012 was to build our Alumni Relations. I really looked forward to meeting the people who make CCHS such a special place – hearing your stories and sharing my experiences. While we are slowly making inroads, the coming year is when we will really hit our stride. Look for it to be fi lled with more contact and outreach.

We are creating an Alumni website that will allow you to connect with your friends, your classmates, and your school. The site will allow us to place more information about what your fellow Alumni are doing outside of these walls. We always look forward to hearing from you, fi nding out what you have been doing, and giving you the opportunity for feedback on what we are doing well and what we can do better.

I hope you enjoy looking back on our accomplishments chronicled in this Annual Report. If you have questions or would like to meet, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Thank you for all that you do for Central Catholic High School!

Scott Vogel

National Merit ProgramHigh school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 2% of test-takers nationwide are named National Merit Commended Students. Of those, approxi-mately 1% of students nationwide are named semifi nalists. Of that pool, slightly less than 1% of students are named fi nalists and are eligible to apply for select merit college scholarships. Over the last four years, CCHS is proud to have 25 students who have been counted among the nation’s top 2% of students as Com-mended, Semifi nalist and Finalist students. Below are the results for this year.

The Good Neighbor Grant Program encourages State Farm Associates to build relationships with non-profi t organizations that enhance the qual-ity of life in State Farm communities in the United States. Associates who volunteer a minimum of 40 hours in a calendar year at the same nonprofi t organization are eligible to apply for a Good Neigh-bor Grant for that organization.

We are fortunate to live in a State Farm commu-nity and have had several employees—alumni, parents and past parents—who have volunteered at CCHS for 40 hours, and, in turn, State Farm has given CCHS a $500 grant for each one. If you are employed by State Farm locally, we hope you can participate, too.

Volunteer service of any type, including board ser-vice, committee work, fundraising activities, volun-teer coaching, is eligible as long as it is on a volun-teer’s own time.

We are most grateful to the following 2012-2013 State Farm Good Neighbor Grant Participants:
