their classmates and friends they share their happiness with the lesser

privileged. They bring stationery items – bright and colourful pencils, erasers,

sharpeners, colour pencils etc which is collected and sent to Goonj, an NGO.

This is an initiative of DPS Howrah which aims at imbibing in the students the

every child's face lit with a smile of content as they receive the 'gifts of joy'.

This initiative has been started annually since 2017.

Recycling newspaper and old clothes-Students across various levels in the

school collect old newspapers which is then handed over to an organisation

called Behtar India to recycle the paper.Old clothes which are in good

condition are also collected from the students to be distributed to the nearby

shanties and the underprivileged.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with the students of SANCHAR an NGO every

year since 2017. They take over the stage on this day and display their

multifarious talents. Children of all standards welcome them with open hearts

and celebrate the day by tying Rakhi to each other. They also display their

handmade items for an exhibition which the children purchase very eagerly.

Community library for the underprivileged –A community library has been

set up near our school gates for the children residing in the nearby shanties .

This has given an opportunity for the underprivileged children to read and go

by the motto ‘Padho aur Agey badho’ started in the year 2018 and

inaugurated by our Principal and Pradhan and Up-Pradhan of the Domjur

Panchayat.

Hand in hand with our helpers:

Everyone in DPS Howrah is a part of one big family. We extended our helping

hand to our facility staff in times of ailment and mishap. Children as well as

teachers collected donations to help our bus driver who met with an accident.

Also on another occasion, the school helped our facility staff by providing

monetary help from the library donations which students pay as late fee.

Every year during our Diwali celebration, our facility staff is showered with love

by our children. They made handmade bags and wrote thank you notes for

them, to show them their gratitude and appreciate their hard work. The school

also gifted them with Bed Covers, Diya and sweets to light up their festivities.

Books of different level books are also displayed by the library for the support

staff which they take for their child’s education.

Addressing The Green Campus Needs

We are proud to share that there are 3700 plants/trees planted in the school campus.

All these plants/trees are looked after and nurtured by well-trained gardening staff.

This large number of plants/trees enables the students to enjoy activities such as Nature Walk, Nature Ramble, etc.

Installation of Solar Lights

25 solar lights have been installed around the school campus in order to reduce the usage of electricity and promote the usage of solar energy, a renewable source of energy.

Establishment of Solar Panels

Solar panels have been successfully installed on the roof of the school building. The major benefits of using solar panels are – easy to harness, low maintenance costs,

reduction of electricity bills, diverse application, etc.

Reusing Water Released By the Air Conditioners All the water that is released by the air conditioners installed in the school is used for gardening

and various cleaning purposes in the school.

Rain water Harvesting and Roof water Harvesting

The rainwater from the roof of the school building is channelized to the rainwater harvesting

tank which has a capacity of 8000 litres. The stored water is used for various cleaning purposes

and watering of plants.

Environmental Pledge

After singing the school prayer, the students begin their day at school by taking a pledge written by them to protect the environment.

DPSH GREEN CHALLENGE

A “Green Challenge" was started by the school wherein the community

of students, teachers, parents and friends were challenged to -

Step 1 - Plant at least 1 sapling

Step 2 - Share a photograph or short video of the same on FB

Step 3 - Tag our Page @delhipublicschoolhowrah with #DPSHGreenChallenge and extend the same challenge further to 3 more people.

Our respected Principal Ma’am, Ms. Sunita Arora, was the first person

to initiate the challenge.

Numerous teachers, students, parents and friends took up the challenge and played a vital role in increasing the process of mass plantation of saplings.

ENVIRONMENT PLEDGE

I PLEDGE AND PROMISE, TO PROTECT THE EARTH.

I WILL NEVER LITTER.

I WILL TAKE CARE OF AND CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT.

WE NEED TO BE A TEAM WITH ONE GOAL, FOR A NEAT AND CLEAN MOTHER EARTH.

10 Minutes without Electricity

All the electrical appliances such as fans, ACs, light bulbs, computers, etc, in the school are switched off for 10 minutes every day from 8:30 to 8:40 a.m.

This approach has been adopted to inculcate, in the students, teachers and staff, the importance of using electricity wisely and saving it for the future.

Eco Friendly Dustbins

Separate colour coded dustbins have been provided for everyone to dispose papers, newspapers and non biodegradable waste in the school campus.

The students are thus able to distinguish between different kinds of waste materials and dispose them accordingly. The importance of the same is also imbibed simultaneously.

We also have dustbins made of cane instead of plastic in the offices.

Summer Project – Plant A Sapling

With the objective to inculcate in the students love and care for nature, they are encouraged to plant a sapling or more as a part of the Summer Project.

As they take care of the sapling, they develop a sense of responsibility.

Steel Tiffins And Water Bottles

The students bring lunch boxes and water bottles made of stainless steel instead of plastic.

They also use reusable food containers, drinking containers, utensils (spoons and forks) and napkins instead of prepackaged foods, plastic bags, juice boxes and pouches, paper napkins and disposable utensils.

This way they are guided to make smart environmental as well as health choices.

It helps to inculcate in them the importance of caring for plants and using organic methods for growing plants.

Sapling Presentation

The school presents saplings to the various guests who visit the school during events such as MILAAP, Literary Fest, etc.

During events such as Grandparents Day, Daddy’s Day Out, and

other such occasions, the winners are awarded saplings of the holy tulsi plant to acknowledge their effort and cooperation.

This approach is greatly appreciated by the guests.

At the Investiture Ceremony, the Head Boy, the Head Girl and all the entire Students’ Council are presented with a sapling, which

they (6 students) need to look after throughout the year.

This way we inculcate the value of nurturing the nature, which is a part of our school’s vision.

Serving Plates

Stainless steel plates are used by the canteen to provide snacks to the students during recess and dispersal.

Guests are offered snacks in good quality cane plates which are reusable.

This way the usage of thermocol / plastic plates is avoided.

Eco Friendly Decorations

With an objective to be eco friendly, all the decorations for MILAAP 2018, an annual inter school cultural meet, were made by the students and the teachers using eco friendly materials such as wool, soft wood board, earthen pots, rice flour patterns, flowers, mirrors, etc.

Using cloth as name tags for the participating schools was also highly appreciated.

The vibrant decorations added to the festive atmosphere of the event and were highly appreciated by everyone.

Use Of Newspaper Bags For Gifts

Newspaper is reused in the form of gift bags that is used to present gifts to guests for most of the events and visits.

It helps reduce the usage of gift bags made of fancy paper which are not eco friendly.

These gift bags are made by the students during their Work Education classes.

Organic Kitchen Garden

A kitchen garden has been made by the students adjacent to the school playground, which is maintained by them, with assistance from the gardeners.

A range of seasonal vegetables are grown organically at the plot which adds to the spread of flora in the school and helps to keep the soil fertile.

Models on Global Warming And Science Mela

Students made innovative models to demonstrate the causes and effects of Global Warming which was displayed in the Science Mela and witnessed by the entire school.

The focus of Science Mela 2019 was to save the environment.

Students presented various innovative models on Organic Farming and Agriculture based on cost effective ways on rain water harvesting.

Few models also depicted reduction of waste generation, impact of marine pollution and ocean dumping.

It was a great way to reinforce their understanding about pollution and waste management along with sustainability methods.

We have also banned the use of thermocol for any art / craft purposes.

We always encourage students to use eco friendly materials or reuse old things for art / craft work.

Floral Holi

The little dipsites welcome spring – the season of growth and renewal, by celebrating Holi with fresh and colourful flowers.

They avoid using harmful colours and water during the celebrations.

Diya Decoration Using Earthen Lamps

The students are guided by the teachers to make earthen lamps or diyas which are later given to the faculty staff on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

It promotes the usage of eco friendly resources in place of electric lights.

Avoiding the usage of electricity also saves economic resources.

Daddy’s Day Out

During the grand event – “Daddy’s Day Out” all the fathers walked

the ramp with their wards wearing costumes made of recycled materials such as newspapers, old clothes, wrappers, etc.

It was a fun filled way to promote the concept of reusing.

Class Assemblies

Students are sensitized to preserve the nature and natural resources through assemblies based on related themes.

They performed wonderfully on themes like ‘Pollution, Oceans of

the World, Save Water and Nurture the Nature’ that helped to

increase their awareness about being sensitive towards the well being of the planet.

Fun – Task – Tic Hour Activities

The students of the Pre-Primary Department (605 students) have great fun taking part in activities which promote conservation of nature.

They are provided with constant guidance and assistance from the teachers to enhance their knowledge about the themes based on creating a greener and healthier world.

They make a range of items using natural materials such as sand, wood, leaves, flowers, grass, stones, etc., during the activity - Nature Ensemble.

The activity P for Planet No for Plastic was an effective way to motivate them to avoid using non eco friendly materials for art and craft purposes.

We also promote themes such as saving water, saving the planet, etc, and using eco friendly materials through the activity – Art Attack.

This helped them to learn to make something new and different keeping in mind the purity and sanctity of nature.

Our Annual Drives

Ganga Cleaning Abhiyaan

The “Green Gang Club” of the school goes to the banks of the river Ganga and clean the garbage dumped in the river senselessly by the local people.

They also clean the river banks and speak to the local people about their duty towards keeping the water bodies clean.

NO Plastic Campaign

As an extension of our “No Plastic Campaign” the Green Gang members make the local people and vendors of the Foreshore Road, Howrah aware about the ill effects of using plastic bags as well as distribute cloth bags made by them during their Work Education class.

We also encourage the students to use bags made of cloth or paper whenever they bring any material to school.

Donation Of Old Books The students of DPS Howrah visit the nearby shanties (Domjur)

and distribute their old books to the children. This activity is a fulfilling experience for the students when they

see the smile on each child’s face while receiving the gift of joy. Through this activity the students learn how to reuse the old

books and save millions of trees from being cut to make paper.

RECYCLING OF WASTE

In order to promote the concept of recycling, all the students are encouraged to come up with innovative ideas to decorate the school campus using recycled plastic bottles, shoe planters, etc.

Recycling Of Newspaper

As part of the eco-friendly campaign “#recyclekiyakya,” old

newspapers are collected every Friday which are brought by the students and teachers.

Then it is packed and sent to an organisation that recycles the entire bulk so that it can be reused again.

Every Drop Matters! (Phase 1) Selected students from Classes Nursery to II made banners on

the theme – “Save Water” and went for a ‘Save Water Walk’

around the school campus, during the time of the dispersal, to spread awareness about conserving water amongst the parents and carers.

The catchy slogans and meaningful art work displayed on the banners grabbed the attention of the viewers and inculcated in them the value of water in our lives.

Water, Electricity and Waste Audit

A team of 10 students from Classes KG II to II have been appointed to ensure that the numerous sustainable initiatives adopted by the school such as Cleanliness Drive, 10 minutes without Electricity, etc, are being followed by everyone sincerely.

They are assisted by the teachers in charge to visit and inspect the rooms, washrooms and corridors followed by maintaining a record of their findings.

The audit is conducted weekly without any intimation to others. The approach has motivated the students as well as reinforced

their knowledge about sustainability.

Green Gang Initiatives

DECORATIVE SHOE PLANTERS

The members of the Green Gang reused old shoes lying in their homes by decorating them and reusing them as pots to grow small plants.

It was a fantastic way to display their creativity and innovation.

Self-Watering Flower Pots

Another initiative by the members of the Green Gang include making of self-watering flower pots using old pet bottles, cotton wicks and cello tape.

All the self-watering flower pots were then placed around the school campus.

Promoting Sustainable LIFESTYLE by The Guides Of

DPS Howrah

Awareness about Using LPG Cylinders

The Guides of DPSH helped the local people understand the consequences of using traditional chullahs that lead to numerous respiratory as well as eye problems.

They also made them conscious about the multiple benefits of using gas cylinders for cooking such as it is eco friendly, do not affect the health, is time saving, etc.

Water Filtration Using Charcoal

The Guides of DPSH demonstrated the technique of “Charcoal

Water Filtration” to spread awareness among the people residing

in the nearby shanties about adopting organic methods to filter water.

It helped them understand that using clean water is a basic necessity and can be filtered at reasonable cost.

In Service Teachers Training

MICRO TEACHING

Micro-teaching is a teacher training and faculty development technique whereby the teacher reviews a delivery of a teaching session, in order to get constructive feedback from peer teachers about what has worked and what improvements can be made to their teaching technique.

It is a 10-15 min teaching session wherein a teacher delivers a model lesson plan for the introduction and recapitulation of a lesson keeping in mind the clear cut objective of teaching a particular topic/concept.it enables in- service teachers to practice a skill by teaching a short lesson. Micro teaching allows the student teacher to practice one skill at a time and then combine it with others when it has been mastered. Micro teaching methods used in conjunction with conventional methods help to improve teacher training.

A ‘Micro Teaching Schedule’ is prepared department wise by the respective HMs to include all teachers

in inculcating this practice in developing their teaching skills.

It focuses on sharpening and developing specific teaching skills and eliminating errors. It enables understanding of behaviour important in classroom teaching. It increases the confidence of the practising teacher.
