A Foundation of
Excellence
By Head of School, Jody Douglass
Tradition and innovation are at the core of Sem today, and the school thrives because it values both. A great school must continue to evolve, but always hold true to the mission and values that are its foundation.
We have worked together to move forward with great respect for our past and with a passion
to educate our students for the world of the future. This report reflects the wonderful accomplishments of the past year that have been achieved through your strong support and collaboration.
The start of the 2013-2014 school year is a very special moment in Buffalo Seminary’s history. For the first time in more than 40 years, the school’s enrollment will top 200 students. This size is one that is remembered by alumnae of earlier years when the expectation was to have a class of 50 girls, but it is a new experience for most cur-rent students. We welcomed 80 new students to Sem this fall with girls from 35 different schools in Western New York, and residential
students from China, Korea, Japan, and Germany, and France.
Understanding the issues confront-ing the world will be vitally important for our students. The Sem curriculum integrates thoughtful analysis in our classrooms. In English, mathematics, science, international languages, art, music, and drama, our students take introductory and advanced courses to prepare them for university work.
A look at the history curriculum provides a glimpse of the nature of a Sem student’s work today. The fresh-man year, History 1 course empha-sizes historical thinking skills, spatial thinking, and the foundations of U.S. government and politics. Students spend the first trimester analyzing primary and secondary sources, creating narrative representations of important events, and exploring the multiple forces that produce change over time. Toward the middle of the year, they learn the five themes of geography, become experts at reading and creating maps, and contemplate the significant role that space plays in shaping human identity. Students spend the third trimester studying the elements of political participation and examining the functions of local, state, and national governments. An interest in and a concern for Western New York underlies all three trimes-ters of History 1.
In sophomore year, students take U.S. History, and in junior year, they take World History. Advanced Place-ment courses for college credit are offered in each of these courses. In the senior year, up to six elective courses are offered: Contemporary Middle East History; Freedom Triumphs: 100+ years of South African History; Chinese History: Revolution and Controversy; Her Story as History: A Survey of the U.S. Women’s Movement Since 1848; The Sixties in America; or AP Europe-an History. The curriculum is exciting, challenging, and comprehensive. Sem students have had both a grounding in skills and a range of advanced oppor-tunities for study in history and in all other areas of the academic program.
A Sem education continues to pro-vide a foundation of excellence that prepares girls for a future of leader-ship and engagement. Thank you for your support for the work that we do.

In June 2012, Jody Douglass was informed that Sem had been approved for a $50,000 match-ing grant by the Edward E. Ford
Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to provide faculty professional develop-ment curricular initiatives in two areas: leadership education for girls, and an intensive experiential learning program along with restructuring the academic leadership team. In order to receive this $50,000 Buffalo Seminary agreed to a match on $1 to $2 basis cash contribu-tions. Fortunately, generous donations from Kathie (Heasly ’63) and John Metzger, and Monica Angle and Sam Magavern ensured the matching grant and, therefore, the guaranteed dollars from the foundation last spring.
The Edward E. Ford Foundation was
established in 1957 with the purpose to provide grants to U.S. independent sec-ondary education only. The mission of The Edward E. Ford Foundation is “to strengthen and support independent secondary schools and to challenge and inspire them to leverage their unique talents, expertise and resources to ad-vance teaching and learning throughout this country by supporting and dis-seminating best practice, by supporting efforts to develop and implement mod-els of sustainability, and by encouraging collaboration with other institutions.” Buffalo Seminary is very proud to have secured a grant from a very competitive pool of applicants, and the support of Edward E. Ford Foundation will be pivotal in strengthening SEM’s profes-sional development program.

Two Seniors Reflect on the Opportunities that SEM has provided
My name is Marissa Egloff and I’m a senior at SEM.Lately many people have been asking me what I plan to do with my life. Where do you plan on at-tending college? What do you want to study in school? What do you want to be when you are older? Luckily, because I attend
Buffalo Seminary, I can answer these questions confidently. If I had not attended the West Side Rowing Camp the summer go-
ing into eighth grade, I probably would not have considered Sem as my first choice high school. While attending the rowing camp, I met my best friend Meghan Sullivan who also attends Sem and whose mother and aunts attended Sem. They, along with Sem alumnae Jen Persico and Sondra Maas, convinced me to consider Sem. I de-cided to attend the open house and I immediately fell in love with the school. The moment I walked through the big wooden doors I knew that Sem was a very special place. I could see myself thriv-ing at this school and that is exactly what happened. Now looking back at my time at Sem, I can see how much I have changed. When I first entered in September 2010, I was a shy young girl with an awk-ward sense of style. I could never have imagined that as early as my sophomore year I would blossom into a talkative and outgoing Sem girl. On the first day of my freshmen year, I would have guaranteed that I would never give a tour of the school. However, I was horribly mistaken. I have given at least thirty tours of the schools and have hosted many girls when they have visited the school. Sem has given me the confidence to give the tours and host the guests.
Before attending Sem, I was too scared to even speak in class. In Orchard Park Middle School, I would sit in my chair fearing that the teacher would call on me. After spending about three days at Sem, I was able to overcome my fear of talk-ing in class. The teach-ers taught me that I
should share my opinions and ideas in class and not worry about what others think. Sem taught me that I have to be the person who I was meant to be and stand up for what I believe in. Now, thanks to Sem, I am no longer the quiet one sitting in the back of the classroom hop-ing not to be called on. As I start to prepare for college, I realize that I would be not be the person I am today if I had not attended Buffalo Seminary. Sem has taught me many important life lessons that no other school or person will ever be able to teach me. One of those skills includes leadership.
My first leadership opportunity came with a sport that I learned to play when I came to Sem. During my sophomore year, I was named Junior Varsity Field Hockey Captain. This was a big honor for me; however, at the time I did not know if I could handle the responsibil-ity of running the team. Yet, the thing that scared me even more was making announcements for the team in front of the whole school at morning meeting. During my time as captain, I learned skills such as responsibility, leadership, and public speaking. Even though I broke out in a rash and stumbled through every word of my announcement, I was able to stand up in front of the school and do it. Thanks to the family community at Sem who supported me through my many an-nouncements, I was able to conquer my fear of public speaking. The people who attend Buffalo Seminary are special women, we learn to stand up for ourselves and be who we truly are during our time at this school. Now in my senior year and a captain of the varsity field hockey team, a representative on the community service board, and the edi-tor of the school yearbook, I see how the skills that Sem has taught me can be put to use in the real world. Currently I am in the process of applying to college. I am applying to College of Charleston, Wake Forest University, University of Mary Washington, Canisius College, St. Lawrence University, and Bates College. As a result of attending Sem, I have confidence to reach my full potential in life and live the path that life has set forth for me. After attending undergraduate school, I plan on attending medical school. I am hoping to become a dermatolo-gist who will help patients who are suffering with skin cancer just like my father has. I want to help those people who are suffering with the skills and life lessons that I have learned while I was at Sem. All of us
who have attended Buffalo Seminary share a special bond. We are independent, strong women
who can stand up for ourselves; how-ever, when push comes to shove,
we are a family unit who is always there to support
one another no mat-ter what happens.
“Thanks to the family community at Sem who supported me through my many announcements, I was able to conquer my fear of public speaking.”

My name is Hiba Al-Naji and I’m a senior at SEM.It’s mind boggling to think 4 short years ago I was in the second month of my freshman year. Those first few months were a challenge for me. I came from a small Islamic School where my graduating class totaled 6 stu-dents, 4 boys and 2 girls. SEM was never my first choice school. My parents had drilled into my head that I would be attending Grand Island Public school and there was no question about it. In May of my 8th grade year, I saw a flyer outside my guidance counselor’s office that said “SEM offers a 1-to-1 lap-top program.” Right then and there I fell in love with a school that I knew nothing about. I went home that day and did some research and found that SEM had a lot to offer and brought the idea up to my parents. The answer was no. I begged and even asked my guidance counselor to speak to my mom. Luckily SEM was willing to accept a late application. Without a definite answer from my mom, my previ-ous school faxed over my transcripts and the next day my mother received a phone call from Ms. Auwarter at SEM saying I needed to come in the following day to take my entrance exam. I came in, took the entrance exam, and the following day received a call from Ms. Auwarter saying I scored exceptionally on both my math and English and I would be a great addition to SEM. I was accepted and enrolled into high school in 4 days. Too bad college isn’t like that!
Although many of us see SEM as a small school, it was like a college to me; so many classes, so many different faces, all new to me, and I was new to everyone, too. It wasn’t easy being the only girl that wore a scarf on her head when meeting all the incoming freshman for the first time. I didn’t really feel welcome my first few days. It wasn’t until Hornet/Jacket sleepover at SEM that I made my mark on my class. Mr. Hopkins, the one male teacher at the event, had gone home, leav-ing nothing but a school filled with about 80 girls. I went to the bathroom alone, took off my scarf, fixed my hair, and walked into the chapel. I felt like a top model at that moment. Everyone came run-ning up to me, feeling my hair, “your hair is so long Hiba!” “your hair is beautiful” “you look like prin-cess jasmine!” And in my head all I was thinking was “yesssss, finally I can be a part of them.”
I soon learned that Sem is not about being part of a group or clique. It is about being your-self and giving it all you have to offer. I was nev-er the type of person to speak in front of a large crowd or confront people first. That changed here. Freshman year I built up enough courage to run for class president. I lost, but it was a great learning experience. I ran again sophomore year, again lost, but that didn’t stop me from running another year, and finally I had talked my class-mates into electing me. I can honestly say, I be-lieve I was a great Junior Class president. I put in a lot of time and effort. It was all worth it in the end when my class showed great appreciation. I had a great feeling inside knowing I was able to
give back to my school and community. Throughout my years here I have been given the chance to
share my culture and religion with the school on numerous occa-sions. I arranged for my previous principal to come in and give an all school presentation about what it means to be a woman in Is-lam. She explained how all the stereotypical ideas of Muslim wom-an are false. Sophomore year, I traveled to Philadelphia for a stu-dent diversity leadership conference where thousands of students from around the world worked together and discussed topics re-lated to diversity. We were introduced to activities which I brought back to the student body of SEM. As co-president of Justice League this year, I will be traveling to the same conference, this time in DC, and hope to bring back more ideas. I am also president of Am-nesty International and International Club. I want to open the eyes of many to the human rights issues across the globe. We may be a small school but we can make a difference, even if it just means educating our communities about the reality of what’s happening in many third world countries.
All that I’ve learned in past three years has truly prepared me for a bright future. In high school I chose my pro-fession early of pharmacy and have stuck with it. This past summer I began an internship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the depart-ment of Urology, Robotic Surgery and Phar-maceutical Sciences, and I am continuing my internship during the school year. At Roswell I have participated in labs where we test differ-ent medicines that can show early stages of cancer in the blood. I have also compiled a da-tabase of over 1000 patients, that when com-pleted, will be available to doctors, not only in the hospital but very likely, nationwide.
I have great faith that my time and hard work, my grades, job and my many hours of community service each year will distinguish my college application from other applicants. I plan on attending the UB School of Pharma-cy’s Early Assurance Program that allows high school seniors to be accepted into the Gradu-ate School of Pharmacy as a college freshman and complete studies in six years. I know SEM has prepared me well, not only for college, but also for life after school. I’ve learned many les-sons here that I will forever remember and I feel very confident graduating this year know-ing I’m prepared for bigger and better things.
“My goal for each club is to give each girl a voice and unite our voices to allow change.”

Sem has recognized the following individuals in this special category for their continued interest in and service to our community.
There is a premium at Sem on commitment and participation. These characteristics allow each of us to grow as individuals, while strengthing our school as a whole. Likewise, when each of us participates in Sem’s Annual Fund, our collective commitments have a meaningful and widespread impact.
100% PARTICIPATION
“Together, we have accomplished more than any one of us could have accomplished alone.”

One of the requirements to receive a Sem diploma is service to the greater community. While the requirement ends at graduation, the following alumnae continue to give generously in the same spirit that was so important then and still is today. The great support from the alumnae is a wonderful gesture of thanks and continued support of Sem’s mission.

On a spring trip to Maine, Head of School, Jody Douglass caught up with Nancy Hewitt Holler ’55 and Jane Genske Briggs ’52. Barbara Fischer McQueeney ’74 asked Nancy, who recently
made a generous donation toward an endowed SEM scholarship, why SEM was still so important in her life. Nancy’s SEM story will resonate with our alumnae.
“By the time I was in 8th grade in School 16 on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, my mother was working as a substitute home economics teacher in the city high schools. After she spent some time at the high school I was destined to attend, she decided to look for an alternative and arranged for me to take the scholarship exam for Buffalo Seminary. The rest was his-tory. I was able to go to SEM and three years later, my sister enrolled as well, also with scholarship help. My mother’s foresight and wisdom at that time, and the availability of scholarships, had a lifelong effect on us.
“Being a student at SEM during my high school years gave me many priceless gifts. Four years together in a small school resulted in friends who still are dear to me. The chance to explore art, to learn to sing parts in beautiful choral music, to paint sets and even have a small part in a play--all this certainly enriched my life. But what was
Portland Maine Visit
unique at SEM was the culture of taking learning seriously. “As I write this, it is clearer still that being a student at SEM
instilled in me the great gift of enjoying learning, which has enriched my life ever since.”
Above: Nancy Hewitt Holler ’55, Jody Douglass, Jane Genske Briggs ’52, Barbara Fischer McQueeney ‘74
Left: Jane Genske Briggs ’52 purchased this Karel Appel entitled, I am an Animal, at the David Anderson Charita-ble Trust Collections’ Auction. Jane’s donation benefitted SEM and several other WNY community organizations. The art work is proudly displayed in SEM’s front hall.
We offer our sincere thanks to all the grandparents of current students and alumnae who continue to show their commitment to Sem.

IN-KIND GIFTSEACH YEAR WE RECEIVE A WIDE RANGE OF NON-CASH GIFTS AND DONATED SERVICES. AMONG THE WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTIONS THIS YEAR:
25
26
Our friends and alumnae who have chosen to name the school as a bene-ficiary in their wills are members of Sem’s Elm Legacy Society. Membership grows each year and includes forward-thinking supporters from all decades and from a range of life stages and financial means.
SEM’S ELM LEGACY SOCIETY
We are grateful to all who help to ensure the Sem experience for our girls. Sem’s future grows stronger each time we wel-come a new member to our Elm Legacy Society. Gifts of all sizes benefit future generations of students, faculty and school lead-ership while offering tax advantages to donors and their heirs.

What a memorable year 2013 was for Seminary’s Swinging Soiree at the Town Ballroom! Netting over $90,000, Sem’s Swinging Soiree was made possible thanks to the leadership of parent co-chairs Brian and Pam Melber and Kevin and Terese Schmidle, the commitment of committee chairs and members, the dedication and creative culinary talents of the parents, faculty, staff and student volun-teers, as well as the participation of a very enthusiastic crowd. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s tremendous event.
