CONTENTS

More than just an abstract idea, innovation at the UOC is today a tangible reality that is present in all areas of our University. This has required, and will so in the future, fully developing the dynamics and activity needed to turn inno-vation into results and make it an engine for generating new knowledge.

The Open Innovation Office (O2i) was created by the Offi-ce of the Vice President for Innovation as an instrument for promoting, invigorating and generating this innovation and nurturing it, while also reaping the rewards from it as a means of raising awareness and sharing the results with the rest of the University and the academic and professional world in general.

The aim of this report is to outline the activity carried out by this office for the period from October 2008 to Decem-ber 2009.

This report is structured into four fields of actions: 1) the promotion of innovation within the University through initiatives such as making internal calls for emerging inno-vation projects and implementing the Factoria Ide@inno-va; 2) directly-developed O2i projects; 3) experimentation through the creation of the Innovation Laboratory; and 4) dissemination of innovation through outstanding initiatives, such as the editions of the Innovation Forum, publication of the UOC’s educational model, project conferences and in-ternational presence, and the implementing of instruments that guarantee a strong web presence, such as InnovaUOC Lab, UOC Shooter and Project Display Window.

We hope this document gives you an insight into the UOC’s innovative activity and facilitates assessing the results to help improve them in the future.

The winning idea

Marc Recasens’s distributed UOC library: an initia-tive that will allow members of the UOC community to exchange books without the need of a centralized management system, while also promoting a collabo-rative spirit and a sense of community.

Aimed at the University’s administration staff, this was an initiative for developing innovation within the fabric of the UOC. It consisted in running an idea competition.

The aim was to facilitate the emergence of innovation through the conceptualizing of ideas applicable to any area of the UOC, promoting creativity and giving rise to tangible projects that could be implemented.

a participative process in which the Factoria Ide@in-nova website was used to shortlist ideas.

The idea competition took place from the 11 May to 23 July 2009. The ideas were presented and published; the commu-nity selected the three best ideas; and, lastly, the candidates argued the merits of their ideas before a judging panel that chose the winning idea.

The winner received €1,500 and the implementation (with the support of the O2i team) of a project based on the winning idea.

During this period, the second phases of two projects related to the strategic lines of information visualization systems and im-mersive learning, GPS/e-learning and Campus 3D, were developed. Thanks to this work, two fully-functional prototypes were created, providing a starting point for their future application and final development in real learning environments.

GPS/e-LeARnInG UOC

Description:

GpS/e-learning is a system for generating learning solutions tailored to student expectations and preferences. It is a tool with which users can map out, in a personalized and automated manner, their educational and professional paths from a lifelong learning perspective.

The tool works in a similar way to that of a search engine or a user recommendation system. In the wide and struc-tured educational choice of courses offered by the UOC (created and adapted as per EhEa guidelines), the system searches for educational solutions for students to acquire the skills that are best suited to their educational needs.

Based on the analysis work started in the 2007-2008 academic year, this year’s work further developed the tool’s design and functions to the point that the first prototype, or beta version, was produced.

Aims:

• To help students compile and manage their skill domain or matrix to orientate them in terms of new expecta-tions and professional aspirations or to search for new knowledge.

• To help students find educational programmes and paths that most suit them and meet their learning needs.

Results:

• First GpS prototype created with Flex technology (1st phase)

CAMPUS 3D

Description:

The continued development of the UOC’s 3D environment resulted in the enhancing of the environment develo-ped in the first phase so users can browse and download information, display and interact with multimedia objects, and run audio and video files. The avatars were also given a wider range of movement to increase the environment’s realism.

a 3D classroom was also developed that can be customized for different subjects, giving students the chance to un-dertake part of their learning in immersive environments using simulation, games or web pages for experimentation.

Aims:

• To enrich the existing 3D environment so users can browse, download and upload information and display multi-media objects.

• To develop a 3D classroom that provides students with an immersive learning space for working on specific content and skills.

Results:

• a 3D environment enriched with multimedia options and services that support searching for text-based informa-tion in different formats, displaying and running video and audio content, and interacting in real-time with other users.

UOC TRAInInG GAMe

Description:

an experimental prototype, UOC Training Game is the O2i’s proposal for developing user-friendly, interactive games aimed at learning through play using the game-show format. This methodology centres on using informal games and fun to learn in a novel way, in which multimedia content is developed to grab the user’s attention.

The aim of this project is to emphasize accumulative learning based on the student experience and their demonstra-ting of knowledge. Using the game-show format, the game is structured around a series of level tests that students must pass to progress through the different phases and finish the game. To create different response dynamics and paths, a series of scenarios are defined that support including different content formats (text, image, video, execu-table form, etc.) and different types of questions and game elements, such as single- or multiple-choice questions, concept ordering, matching up and free text.

Aims:

• To create a generation platform for games on any subject with different levels of difficulty that can be displayed on any web browser. This platform supports building different scenarios and the basic processes of the architec-ture of the proposed model.

• To define a management system based on a concept model and a platform for developing different game proto-types for establishing new ways to learn through play.

• To generate a game display/model based on Silverlight technology that is independent of the user’s operating system, browser and device.

Results:

SOCIAL UOC InTeRACTIOn

Description:

In this project has been developed a system to monitor social networks analysis within a Virtual Learning Communi-ty (VLC). In a case study, developed in the first stage of this project, were found correlations between the students’ participation level and their academic performance. Departing from these outcomes, some indicators of students’ participation were defined, such as: authority level, interest level, number of relations and number of discussions in which a student has participated, among others.

The developed system has the aim to provide technological support for professors, who may lean on graphical representations of the students’ interaction and quantitative analysis of the social network within the VLC, in order to provide a better support to the students learning process and improve teaching quality.

Objectives:

• Developing of a monitoring system of social network analysis integrated to the UOC campus.

• allowing free navigation among the different system options in order to enable the access to different levels of information.

Outcomes:

• Indicators of participation of the Virtual Community learning members.

• Graphic visualization system of the interaction among the VCL members and the discussion threads generated during the learning process.

• Visualization of pre-established temporal periods of analysis, which allow observing in a graphic way the evolu-tion of the social network.

• Customization of the Graph’s social network (nodes and links) with particular information of the community members. That allows the visualization of general and specific information at a first glance.

Innovation is often seen as using cutting-edge technology to create new and fantastic products, but if a product has no use, it is destined to fail. Innovating requires examining the current situation to identify a problem that needs fixing or a need that must be met in a different way. This identification process can be used to find a rapid or effec-tive solution for an immediate scenario, or to foster a more ambitious attitude to making imagination, creativity and experimentation useful, with the aim being to find an in-novative solution for changing the starting point by making a notable qualitative jump.

a space for making innovation useful and instigating creative processes that require imagining, searching, designing, acting, experimenting and testing to find new responses.

The laboratory was envisaged as a space for bringing into play the capacity to observe reality from a different pers-pective so as to find new uses or new ways to use available resources, while accepting that making mistakes is part of the innovation process.

Participation in Seminars and Conferences

Attending and actively taking part in major events on e-learning, university teaching, educational innovation and the evolution of ICTs is one of the O2i’s priorities. Dissemi-nation actions carried out in 2009 included explaining the concept of innovation that guides the Office’s activity, dis-playing the projects carried out, taking part in discussions with other experts and presenting the UOC’s educational model.

Dissemination of the UOC’s educational Model

Regarded as one of the main sources of inspiration for innovation at the UOC, the most recent evolution of the educational model was the focus for an intense effort in the Office’s dissemination activity. As part of this, the docu-ment, “The UOC’s education model. Evolution and perspec-tives”—written during the 2008-2009 academic year—was published in Catalan, Spanish and English in electronic and print format. This publication was made available within the institution with two aims in mind: to foster knowledge of the educational model in UOC staff and to facilitate studies and groups in disseminating the model externally when it was required.

The Office also collaborated with the Marketing De-partment to disseminate the educational model via the UOC web portal.

The Presentation of the educational Model Conference was also held at the central offices in the 22@Barcelona dis-trict on the May 8th. It could be followed by video conferen-ce, from the central offices and the IN3’s office. To demons-trate the link between the model and innovation, faculty staff presented their experiences with innovation projects related to the model’s thematic lines.

holding Project Conferences

For innovation to have a real impact in creating knowledge and generating new initiatives it must be shared. This is why project conference go beyond just explaining work done; they are also an instrument for promoting debate, collabo-ration and the emergence of new ideas within the Univer-sity community.

During this academic year, 3 conferences were held: 52 projects were presented and 255 people

In 2009, one of the O2i’s main priorities was to put into pla-ce the instruments required to assure a distinctly innovative web presence in which content and container are expres-sions in the same language. For this reason, the designing and developing of these tools was carried out following the same method and applying the same criteria as in the Office’s other innovation projects. The result was the crea-tion of three instruments for raising awareness about the Office’s work, UOC Shooter, InnovaUOC Lab and Project Display Window. While all three are different in terms of form, behaviour and functions, they are completely integra-ted with each other and open to the input of visitors.

The InnovaUOC Lab

The InnovaUOC Lab is a portal for accessing all the objects, content and sites related to the activity of the Office—news, projects, events, people, web pages, etc., both inter-nal and external.

A novel way of browsing

The Lab’s innovative element is the Seed viewer, a browsing system that supports accessing content fo-llowing the semantic link between different content, which is represented as a dynamic, three-dimensional mesh. One of the most interesting aspects of this sys-tem is that it incorporates, as new content nodes, the contributions and comments of visitors.

The UOC Shooter

UOC Shooter is graphical search system for accessing any O2i-related content combining different search-criteria tags. The graphical element for displaying the results and accessing them is a spherical, animated tag-cloud that de-creases in size as the user refines the search.

The Showroom

It is a web page for visually displaying all the UOC innova-tion projects managed or developed by the Open Innova-tion Office. This includes all the projects approved in the four calls for emerging projects made from 2007 to present and the projects developed directly by the Open Innova-tion Office.

The Showroom is an authentic open-window to the web that puts the UOC’s innovative activity on show and that is kept up to date.

It includes all approved projects, regardless at what stage they are at (in development, completed or cancelled), pro-viding basic information and related multimedia-content (links, presentations, articles, videos, etc.).

A visual, dynamic and participative approach to web page design

The main innovative value of the The Showroom lies in its design, which features a decidedly-visual and -dynamic environment in which users can access and visualize the content in diverse ways and where the invitation for visitors to participate is present in all elements.
