Board PresidentA message from our Board President, Tom Lloyd

To All of Our Friends, Families, Partners, and Supporters: Today, I have the honor of addressing each of you one last time as the President of the Gi-raffe Laugh Board of Directors. Since I was first elected nearly seven years ago, we have seen so much growth in the organiza-tion, both in terms of the services that we have been able to provide and in our support from our com-munity. On behalf of the current Giraffe Laugh Board of Directors and all who have volunteered on the Board in the past, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the time, energy, and support that you have given to the mission and vision we have at Giraffe Laugh. Without your support, the prog-ress we have made over the years to meet the needs of so many chil-dren and families would not have

been possible. Serving on the Board has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Both as a parent and a volunteer, I have continually seen, first hand, the tremendous impact that Giraffe Laugh has on our families and our community. When I first came to Giraffe Laugh, I had no idea the influence that it would ultimately have on my life and my outlook. Many years later, I have had a child attend Giraffe Laugh from start to finish, and have watched him move on to Kindergarten ready, eager, and enthusiastic – all because of the early start he had with our amazing teachers and staff who cared for him and loved him during his first five years. Beyond my own family’s experience, however, my time on the Giraffe Laugh Board has helped me realize the opportuni-

ty that we have, as a society and a community, to implement real change in the lives of children who might not otherwise have the ben-efits of early childhood education. On a daily basis, we are able to see the lasting positive impacts of the services that we are able to pro-vide with the support of all of you who have joined us in our mission. In the coming years, Giraffe Laugh will need all of our help more than ever in order to continue providing the high qual-ity early care and education that we are known for. I believe that the new Board leadership, com-bined with an active and involved Board membership, is prepared to take on any challenge with vigor and enthusiasm. I also know, how-ever, that they cannot do it alone. I encourage every one of you, as our strongest supporters, to con-sider ways that you can continue

to help us accomplish our mission in the Treasure Valley. I will close by extending my utmost gratitude to all of you. It has been an honor to serve as the President of the Board, and I will continue to be involved with Giraffe Laugh for years to come. If you are able, please join me as a lasting member of our Big Dreams Society, so that together we can ensure a legacy for Giraffe Laugh and all of the children and fami-lies we serve. Thank you again for your time, energy, support, and encouragement. At Giraffe Laugh, “We Can See The Future From Here.” I hope to see you there, too!

On a daily basis, we are able to see the lasting positive impacts of the services that we are able to provide with the support of all of you who have joined us in our mission.

Best regards,

Tom LloydPast Board President

Executive DirectorA letter from Executive Director, Lori Fascilla

At Giraffe Laugh we strive to enrich the lives of every child we can through our early childhood programs designed to provide a loving, secure, educational, environment that allows a child to blossom into all they can be.

In the words of Bill Gates Sr., “The first 5 years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.”

If those first 5 years are filled with quality experiences a child has a much better chance of graduating from high school, attending college and leading a productive, enriched life that is then passed on to the next generation.

At Giraffe Laugh we strive to enrich the lives of every child through our early childhood programs designed to provide a loving, secure, education-al environment that allows a child to blossom into all they can be. While the focus is on children, we are forever aware that each child comes with a fam-ily that needs support, information, hugs and encouragement just like their child does.

Our next generation will be our community, state and world leaders that move us into a future that is uncertain. That future is made less uncertain when we take the steps to ensure school readi-ness, empower families and build strong futures.

The list is long and the need is great, so your support in these impor-tant endeavors is crucial to making a change that lasts a lifetime. We can see the future from here in our work each day and we thank you greatly for your part in making the difference in the life of children right here in our community.

We share a vision that every child in the Treasure Valley has access to quality early care and education and that all

parents are empowered and supported through the early years of parenthood. We know by doing these

things, we are building strong futures every day.

Ensuring School Readiness

These little shoes fit me when I started in Dora’s 2’s class.

I was a shy little boy with big brown eyes and a dimple that shows when I smile. I was so afraid when I started school and I never let Dora go far. She called me “Her little shadow.” I didn’t talk to anyone else and

skirted around behind her for many months. Eventually I started to blossom and began to actually talk to people. I was really scared at first and not sure I could use my voice to get what I needed without crying, but I did it and my confidence built. I also began to play with the other kids and one day I

said a word in Spanish at Circle Time when Dora asked for the Spanish name for nose. I am now a confident, talkative, playful preschooler who still loves to hug Dora when I proudly walk by each day to my classroom. I am prepared for preschool and on my way to \Kindergarten ready to go!

When children are born their brains are only 25 percent developed and by the time they leave our program to enter kindergarten their brain is 90 percent developed.

99 percent of our kids were eager and

prepared for kindergarten in 2015.

Empowering FamiliesOver 1,664 children are abused in Idaho every year. When parents are empowered and connected, and given information and support in time of need, they are less likely to abuse or neglect their children.

$20 PER WEEK provides

extracurricular ac-tivities for 10

low-income kids for an entire summer.

We provide crying plans to all parents of infants to encour-age them to try the techniques on their plan, then to call for help. Parents sign the plan and leave a copy for anyone caring for their infant.

direct support and education this year while countless others stayed connected through activities, parent/ teacher conferences and our monthly newsletter.

These little shoes fit me when I first went to school while my mommy was in High School.

She was really young and scared and she always wrapped me up too tightly in big blankets. I was always too warm and one day my teachers Ms. Brandi and Ms. Lupita told my mommy it wasn’t good for me and taught her all

about safety. She listened and learned how to help me sleep in a safer environment. My mommy graduated from high school last year and is now in college and I am in pre-school. We are both excited about our future together as a family of two.

Extracurricular activities level the playing field.

When a low-income child enters kinder-garten with the same vocabulary and ex-periences as their regular income peers, they have more knowledge base, are more confident and are more successful.

Our partnerships with Ballet Idaho, The Tumble Bus, swim lessons and field trips to the Botanical Gardens, Zoo Boise and more ensure that all children can partici-pate in activities that are out of reach for many low income families.

My mom was addicted to drugs until she found out she was pregnant then she quit. She moved in with my grandparents and started a new life. She went to school while I was growing up at Giraffe Laugh and later became a volunteer. She started a career, got married and I am now a senior in the Honors program after many years in the Gifted and Talented Education program. I am excited to start college and I want to be a scientist.

I remember a story my father told me

many times. He came home from work after my

first day in first grade and said, “Well Janie, how

was school?” My response was one of huge disap-

pointment. When he asked what was wrong. I said,

“I can’t read!” That was a small child’s expectation

about school, that magically I’d be able to read. In

those days there were no public kindergartens and

very few private nursery schools and kindergartens.

I was fortunate that my family could afford both. I

most certainly started school far better prepared

than most of my classmates.

I’ve worked in the non-profit human servic-

es field for over 35 years and through my contacts

with early childhood development experts, have

come to understand how much a child grows and

develops in the first three years. Research shows

that early childhood education is critical to the de-

velopment of each child’s physical coordination,

mental growth, and social skills and sets the stage

for success in life. Although I didn’t begin my formal

education until I was 4, both of my parents were

college educated and spent many hours at home

helping me to acquire those critical early skills.

I have two delightful grandchildren here

in Boise. Judith is two and a half and has attended

Giraffe Laugh Early Childhood Education Program

since she was three months old. She is a delightful

little girl who is now learning her letters, can count

to eleven and loves to sing all the nursery rhymes

that I remember from my own childhood. Toby

is a Giraffe Laugh graduate and proud kindergar-

tener at Longfellow School. I can tell you that he is

far better prepared for school than I was. At five he

can read simple sentences, add and subtract and

readily engage with his new classmates. That’s the

importance of Giraffe Laugh in my family. Toby can

read – and he’s just turning six. When I ask Toby,

“What are you learning in school?”, he says “Every-

thing I already know.”

I’m so pleased their parents found Giraffe

Laugh, so very excited for the road ahead for my

grandchildren because they are getting a great

educational start, and I know that the children in

the program are getting the best early childhood

education available. The scholarship program

for children from low income families is a game

changer for those fortunate enough to be enrolled

and there are so many that need these services.

Fully half of Idaho’s children do not have the basic

skills needed to learn to read when they reach kin-

dergarten. This is a statistic that needs to change.

That’s why I volunteer for Giraffe Laugh, this crucial

program in our community.
