The Missionof Homeward Bound

Providing Innovative & Life-Enriching Services to Children, Adolescents and Adults with Disabilities

Many of the successes I report in this letter illustrate how Homeward Bound manages, finances, and works with its partners in many ways to achieve its mission. These are all important activities and we are grateful for the help we receive in achieving them. What is most important about these activities however, is how their outcomes contribute to the accomplishment of Homeward Bound’s mission.

Homeward Bound has long recognized the importance of a “real home” for individuals to live in. The organization certainly works hard at the basics of

operating homes: creating a home that fits into the neighborhood, that is well-maintained, and that keeps people safe and comfortable. We have found ways to invest our own resources in our homes and to partner with others to meet these objectives, but there is more to it than that.

A “real home” means a home that matches the needs and preferences of the individuals who live there, just as we look for homes that match our family’s needs and preferences. A “real home” is easy to live in, so we ensure that our homes are such that direct contact staff can move about and get their work done easily. A “real home” looks the way we want it to look, so individuals have lots of choice about decorations and colors and layout. Finally, a “real home” is about letting individuals grow in capacity, just as we manage our homes to match our growing families.

You will read later about some specific examples of how we do this. Sometimes, by creating such a “real home” we find out about capacities that our individuals have about which we never knew!

Homeward Bound was again supported by its partners as generously as any year. For the second year in a row, we had the best financial results from our golf tournament ever. Over $100,000 was raised that contributed to our capital budget, not including the major project at our Bluebird home, which was valued at over $225,000 in product donations and in-kind services! Thank you BATC Foundation, BATC members, and Vujovich Design Build!

Homeward Bound made progress in diversifying its services by partnering with Hennepin County, the state, and families in need.

Homeward Bound took over services for three individuals previously served by state operated community services, and opened a new home for these individuals with medical needs. In addition, we grew HBI’s new Individual Housing Options program for individuals who wish to live in their own homes to 18 persons by the end of the year.

Even in the face of an unprecedented labor shortage, the state unwisely and dramatically lessened it’s fiscal commitment toindividuals with disabilities. It did not authorize any COLA for disability services. Despite the state’s fiscal imprudence, Homeward Bound managed a $0.25 wage increase for DSP staff and even more in some targeted instances for other direct contact staff.

Homeward Bound’s human resources department hired over 150 staff persons in 2016 despite the labor shortage. HBI’s managers maintained a turnover rate of only 24%, a figure which is the envy of the industry.

Homeward Bound continued to makeover its budget and operations in response to the state’s complete redesign of disability services in licensing, operations, protection and rate-setting. Its finances remain in excellent shape. Finally, we were able to contribute significant funds towards an employee education program as well.

None of these accomplishments were achieved alone. They were born of the art of securing and strengthening partnerships with the members of our Corporate and Foundation Boards of Directors, family members, friends, employees, and donor community partners. Over the years, the many individuals we serve at Homeward Bound have benefitted from the gracious generosity of our partners who donate scarce resources. This generosity has allowed Homeward Bound to meet the challenges of 2016. On their behalf, I say thank you for all that you have done and for your continued support!

Don Priebe, CEO

In 2016 the BATC Foundation and Vujovich Design Build graciously took Bluebird House under their wing to design and build a new family room addition, bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, storage area and new deck. With the help of The BATC Foundation and 36 BATC member organizations, Vujovich Design Build coordinated a renovation of our Homeward Bound Bluebird House with a donation value of over $225,000 making this dream project became a reality and helping to make this house a home! This generous donation given through hard work and hundreds of hours of time, not only expanded and changed the physical space, it also profoundly affected the lives of the individuals living in the home and for some it gave them wings. Shortly after the space was finished, Randy, one of the young men who call Bluebird home, began to propel his wheelchair around the house on his own. Homeward Bound staff never knew Randy could do this, because previously there was not enough space for Randy to move about on his own. This home renovation has brought a new lightness to the home, a bright, expansive space now large enough for the individuals, staff and families to breath, stretch, move freely and smile as they take it all in.
