Chapter status
Our Chapter’s status is currently active, as it has been since April 2001. This year we encourage
being part of our chapter freshmen year students from the Faculty of Physics and from the
Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, eight of them joined our chapter. Also we tried to
impose a diversification by recruiting students from all of our country, for example students from
the “University Al. I. Cuza”, Iasi and also an important aspect was that their studies and research
has the basis of different branches in physics, such as Medical Physics, Biophysics,
Spectroscopy, Lasers, and Earth Physics. We have members from a broad spectrum of
institutions like National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics, University of
Bucharest, Politehnica University of Bucharest, University Al. I. Cuza, Iasi.
Meetings take place at least once a month, for discussions on current issues, activities, and
planning for future events. Special meetings are a way of getting together for team building and
celebrations, from time to time.
At the beginning of 2012, elections for the Board of our Chapter took place.

Chapter Activities since the Last Report
August 2011, San Diego USA
The participation in August 2011 at the “SPIE Optics & Photonics” Conference, “Student
Leadership Training” Workshop in San Diego, USA, was made possible thanks to a Travel
Grant Award by SPIE. During these events the SPIE Romanian Student Chapter, through Mihai
Boni, has actively participated in the sessions and has promoted our Chapter and our Institute,
NILPRP. Collaboration with other SPIE Student Chapters was discussed and future plans were
made.
This collaboration between different SPIE Student Chapters made possible the organization of
the second edition of ISCP 2011 by our team.

Viorel Nastasa received a Newport Spectra-Physics Research Excellence Travel Award, part of
his expenses were supported by the IAP SPIE Student Chapter. The award was handed by the
former SPIE President MD. Katarina Svanberg at the Lunch with the Experts.

Outreach Activities
Institute for Atomics Physics Chapter in the past has been active in creating awareness and
popularizing Optics in schools in Romania. But this year that spirit was taken to new heights
when our chapter organized outreach activities in schools. These activities were organized at
different locations, one at “National College Nicolae Grigorescu ” Campina, Prahova and several
at the National Institute for Lasers, Plasma and Radiation Physics, Magurele in collaboration
with different schools and high schools.
Outreach Activity April 4th
2012
Given the fact that the Romanian SPIE Student Chapter had in the past a good collaboration with
prof. Adrian Chitu, we organized a visit at the high school “National College Nicolae
Grigorescu”, Campina, Prahova where he is teaching. There we presented some of our laboratory
work and our chapter advisor had a very interesting presentation about some generalities in the
field of spectroscopy. The experimental part of our activity consisted of trying to explain to the
students how we can measure the fluorescence spectrum of different laser dyes by using a set-up
made by a Nd:YAG laser (SHG), an optical fiber and an Ocean Optics spectrometer.
High school students attending an oral presentation
about optics and photonics presented by Prof. C. Chitu
Miss Gabriela Salamu presented her research activity
about ignition process in internal combustion engines by a laser system.
Dr. Angela Staicu told the students about general aspects
of spectroscopy and day-to-day applications.
Mr. Mihai Boni preparing the experimental set-up
for measuring the laser induced fluorescence on laser dyes.
Laboratory visits at the INFLPR of high school students
The chapter advisor, Dr. Angela Staicu, drd. Mihai Boni and drd. Viorel Nastasa organized with
the help of their group, “Laser Spectroscopy Group” http://lsg.inflpr.ro/, a visit with the
motivation of presenting to young students, what are research activities performed at the
National Institute for Lasers, Plasma and Radiation Physics, hoping that they will find this work
very interesting and considering it as future career option in the optics research field.
Dr. Ionut Relu Andrei explaining some of his work to the students.
Dr. Angela Staicu explaining the diffraction phenomena
to elementary school students.
Mr. Mihai Boni presenting the basic aspects of
fluorescence and phosphorescence.
Outreach Activities 2012
The program "Scoala Altfel" (different school) started from the last school year and was running,
in each school for 2012, in the week 2-6 April. During this period the educational activities is
non-formal, such as visits to museums, institutes, universities, trips to industrial factories, public
institutions (mayor house, hospitals, orphanages, public libraries and so on). Simultaneously are
organized Olympics competitions.
The program aims involving both, students and teachers in non-formal activities, interesting to
exploit their talents, skills and extracurricular concerns in areas as diverse and interesting.
The National Institute for Lasers, Plasma and Radiation Physics received a large number
of high school students. They were very enthusiastic about the institute research work.
Viorel Nastasa explaining how is working
a Nd-YaG laser.
Mihai Boni in the laboratory during the LIF
experiments, explaining the theoretical aspects.
Also we had a visit from elementary school “280 - Mihail Sebastian”, Bucuresti, Romania, in the
same program “Scoala Altfel”. The students had a tour of laboratories in our research facility.
International Student Conference on Photonics May 7th
- 11th
2012
The aim of the ISCP 2012, the 3rd edition of International Student Conference on
Photonics, was to reassemble young researchers from different countries with the aim of
exchanging information in photonics and related fields.
ISCP is the annual conference organized by Romanian SPIE Student Chapter and follows
the previous ISWLA conferences. This edition celebrates the 50th anniversary since the first
Romanian laser was developed by Prof. Ion I. Agarbiceanu and coworkers.
ISCP can represent a good opportunity for underlining the importance to belong to a
professional association and the prospects offered by SPIE and OSA to permanently up-date and
increase the professional level of their members.
The involvement of young researchers (physicists, mathematicians, engineers, biologists,
medical doctors and educators from all over the world) in organizing scientific events added new
values to their professional profile, such as the management skills and the innovative thinking.
Such skills are benefic for young scientist to develop a current and future successful scientific
career.
The program of the ISCP conference consisted of 14 invited lectures, 3 presentations by
the sponsoring companies, 32 oral communications and 29 posters of PhD students and young
researchers. The participants were from Romania, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland and
England.

Activities for the future
As we did in the previous years, we are planning to continue our main activities, like educational
activities for high school teenagers and students, laboratory visits, outreach activities. One of the
main goals of our Chapter is to continue the International Student Conference on Photonics
because the feedback received was a positive one, had impact on the new members, and those
from other chapters.
The following is the brief list of planed activities:
1. Continue the extensive collaboration with different universities from our country.
2. Attracting undergraduate’s students from Physics by seminars and visiting tours in our
institute
3. Maintaining close relations, interchange experience and plan common activities with other
SPIE chapters around the world. Especially during the annual meeting, it is a great opportunity to
build relationship for future collaborations.
4. Apply for SPIE grants and scholarships available to chapter and individual chapter members
to support travel and research activities.
5. The participation by two members of our chapter in August 2012 at the “SPIE Optics &
Photonics” Conference and “Student Leadership Training” Workshop in San Diego, USA.
