POLICY AND MANAGEMENT The ISC supports policy development and invasive species management through research, policy recommendations, and technical committee participation.

Major projects from this year include updated research on the economic impacts of invasive species to Ontario municipalities and conservation authorities, participation on 15 invasive species advisory committees, updating the ISC risk assessment database, seven provincial and federal policy responses, a new invasive species network mapping project, and support for six different invasive species research initiatives.

Thanks to our many partners, the Invasive Species Centre had a successful year of growth in invasive species action, outreach, and innovation. We look forward to working with all partners on our common goals to increase invasive species prevention and management.Sarah Rang, Executive Director

Highlights:

1. Economic impacts research found Ontario municipalities and conservation authorities spend an estimated average $50.8 million/year on invasive species, with overall impacts to Ontario agriculture, fisheries, forests, healthcare, tourism, and the recreation industry estimated at $3.6 billion/year.

2. Created a Spotted Lanternfly Education and Outreach Committee, leading to the development of new SLF resources for stakeholders across Ontario and reacting quickly to this new threat to agriculture, viticulture, and forests.

3. Provided support for water soldier, parrot feather, and invasive Phragmites management in Southern Ontario.

AQUATIC HEALTHThis year saw advancements in aquatic invasive species prevention and management through events targeted at researchers, professionals, and recreational water users as well as new early detection and management projects and partnerships.Major projects from this year include hosting the 21st Annual International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species, growth in Asian carp knowledge transfer and prevention activities via Asian Carp Canada webinars and information sessions, and a new joint project in the Prairies protecting species at risk from aquatic invasive species.

FOREST HEALTHPreventing, identifying, and managing terrestrial invasive species in urban and rural landscapes is a top priority for the ISC.This year, we drove land protection and management with invasive species prevention, detection, and management training for professionals, research on invasive species pathways, new resources for land managers, and continued insect identification to support early identification of invasive pests and pathogens.

Highlights:

1. Engaged over 350 anglers, recreational water users, and concerned community members through two Asian Carp Canada webinars and two public information sessions.

2. Coordinated major International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (#ICAIS2019) in Montreal, QC, drawing over 250 attendees from 22 countries.

3. Created a zooplankton diagnostics program to complement our insect diagnostics program, to identify invasive species on land and water.

4. Received recognition from Fisheries and Oceans Canada for outstanding contributions to Asian carps outreach and education.

5. Embarked on a new partnership with Canada’s Prairie Region and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to protect species at risk from aquatic invasive species.

Highlights:

1. Held a hemlock woolly adelgid webinar and field tour for 125 professionals and citizen scientists in Wainfleet, Ontario in November.

2. Researched and assessed the risk of roundwood movement as an invasive species pathway.

3. Created “How To” hemlock woolly adelgid sampling video resources with researchers from Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service.

4. Identified over 14,000 insects for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and EDDMapS invasive species reporting and mapping platform.

5. Welcomed 212 forestry professionals at an oak wilt qualification course and three oak wilt workshops.

COMMUNITY SCIENCE AND ACTIONInvasive species challenges can only be overcome with a diversity of minds working across landscapes to protect Canada’s natural capital. We continue to work with partners throughout Canada and beyond to bring invasive species understanding to community members who form the backbone of prevention and early detection efforts. This year, we sparked community science and action through classroom presentations, participation in major environmental, invasive species, and community events, developing and sharing print and digital resources, and hosting invasive species workshops and information sessions.
