Annual Report July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

Literacy arouses hopes, not only in society as a whole but also in the individual who is striving for fulfillment, happiness and personal benefit by learning how to read and write. ~UNESCO Institute for Education, Hamburg, Germany Dear Friends of Literacy, Thank you for supporting a banner year of achievements, successes and surprises including: a record number of adults (584) accessing literacy services; the single largest donation from an anonymous donor; and earned GED and HSED certificates leading directly to specialized training programs and better employment. Student/tutor hours were at an all-time high (nearly 40,000 hours of combined student/tutor hours) and tutors are taking on new roles as bridge tutors working in training programs. Ten percent of Chippewa Valley residents (20,000 community members) struggle with low literacy and lack self-confidence. They consider themselves unable to learn or get a good job. LVCV plays a critical role in the success of adults living with low literacy and provides the first steps leading up to available career and employment pathways. Tutors work with adults as they gain the confidence and skills to succeed and experience hope for their future. Hope and skills support their first steps up and out of poverty and into the working community. In June, eight English Language learners successfully completed and passed the Red Cross Certified Nursing Assistant practical exam in our Step Up to Career Pathways Pilot program. Four are working as CNAs, and others have gone on for further training in the Bridges2Healthcare programs partnership with CVTC and Workforce Resource, Inc. None of this would have been possible without your support and the support of others like you. Our measure for success has always been and will always be defined by the success of our learners. If they are meeting their goals then in our eyes we have been successful. Thank you for continuing to care.

Literacy Highlights

Open Learning To alleviate waiting lists for services, Open Learning occurs in Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire counties. This program provides opportunities for learners to receive support in a “drop-in” setting from staff instructors and volunteer tutor assistants.

Pair Tutoring Pair tutoring services are offered in Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire counties. Volunteer tutors are matched with learners in a one to one or small group setting. Each student sets goals with the help of their volunteer tutor.

Workplace Education Employees in their workplace receive assistance with basic literacy skills and English competencies. Services are offered in one to one or small group settings. Currently, Literacy Volunteers has programs established at the L.E. Phillips Career Development Center and Minnesota Wire & Cable.

Citizenship Learners receive assistance from an instructor or tutor to prepare for the citizenship exams. This service is offered in Pair Tutoring, Family Literacy, and Workplace Education programs in all three counties. Citizenship is an extensive process for students involving oral, civics, writing, and reading exams.

4th Annual Toast for Literacy

Students, tutors, and special guests gathered to celebrate another successful year on June 24 at Lake Street United Methodist Church. A special thank you to Lloyd Shepherd for his generous donation and helping make this venue possible! Students received recognition for obtaining their GED, gaining U.S. Citizenship, and becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. The 2012 Celebrate Writing book, “Faces of Literacy,” was unveiled to the audience with student readings. Tutors were acknowledged for 5 and 10 years of service to students at Literacy Volunteers. Their commitment to helping adults gain literacy has been outstanding! The event culminated with two special giveaways. Kathy Schneider, Fran’s Friends team captain, donated her Scrabble Bee prize package to two LVCV students. Tower Auto Body CARSTAR donated a minivan to an LVCV student and his family as part of their “Recycled Rides” program. Thank you to both partners for making a difference!

Tutor Anniversaries

Annis Williams was honored as the 2012 “Eric Wahl Making a Difference Award” recipient at our Celebration of Stars event. Annis is an advocate of literacy in her community and supporter of Literacy Volunteers! One of her great accomplishments has been establishing a 60 member “Teen Literacy Initiative Club” at Memorial High School. It is because of Annis that enthusiasm for reading has spread throughout their school as well as the community. Thank you Annis!
