On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to share with you

our 2015 Annual Report and thank Bill Budig for his commitment and

leadership as our Board Chairman for the last two years. I am proud

of the work our organization has accomplished over the last year as we

continue to deliver on our mission to keep families close. The report is

a snapshot of our programs and highlights the impact we are making

with families, kids and our communities. In 2015, we transitioned our

leadership from our longtime CEO, Doug Porter, to Holly Buckendahl,

who joined us from the Kansas City RMHC Chapter. We thank Doug for

his steady leadership and vision in building our Chapter to where it is today.

Last year, we opened our fifth Ronald McDonald House® near Central DuPage Hospital, and our

Ronald McDonald Houses® and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® were able to provide over 40,000

family nights. Through our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, we were also able to bring medical

services to over 2,000 children in underserved communities, and we continue to partner with the

brightest students in our neighborhoods as they pursue their educational goals.

I am extremely proud of our staff and countless volunteers who make our mission come to life. I’m

also thankful to our supporters who believe in our mission and give so generously. Working together,

we are making a difference in people’s lives for years to come.

Gratefully,

Michael Kotynek

MISSIONOur mission is to care for families of

children with complex medical needs

by providing comfort, compassion

and a sense of community.

RMHC-CNI keeps families of

hospitalized children together in

a ‘home away from home’.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERI am deeply honored to have been invited to join the talented and

committed team at Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Chicagoland

and Northwest Indiana. I am pleased the Charity surpassed revenue

goals, reduced capital debt, achieved expense targets, and set the stage

for program sustainability by identifying key financial and organizational

infrastructure goals for the upcoming year.

Inside the Report, you will be touched by the many things we’ve

accomplished together for critically ill children and their families. We realize none of this would be

possible without all of the generous donors who support our efforts. We continue to be vigilant with

your gifts, directing 70% of our income towards our programs. Your support ensured that our

dedicated team of 80 staff members and thousands of volunteers provided children and their

families with the highest quality of care they deserved and were promised. My sincere hope is that

you will take a moment to review the report, and join us in our enthusiasm and ongoing journey

of providing hope, comfort, and compassion to keep families close during times of medical crisis.

Thank you for being a part of our family and providing important resources to help to ease the

worries of the families who stay with us each night.

Gratefully,

Holly Buckendahl

PROVIDING A ‘HOME AWAY FROM HOME’

When 12-year-old Jordan Johnson was born, an ultrasound discovered he had a rare

heart condition – his left heart chamber was so weak it couldn’t pump blood. Noelle,

Jordan’s mother, remembers her family’s stay at the hospital for his first heart surgery.

They stayed in a hotel room for a few nights, but soon realized they couldn’t afford it. Plus,

Noelle and her husband Jim, were commuting back and forth from home because their

other children were in school and Jim still had to work. “We were sleeping in recliner chairs in the hospital lobby and brushing our teeth in

public restrooms,” she said. “It was awful.”

When you ask Noelle about Jordan’s health, she can rattle off the dates of his three heart surgeries, his seven-month stay in the hospital as

a newborn, when he got a tracheotomy tube to help him breathe and the nights she’s spent by her son’s side every time he needed treatment

at the hospital. Yet, when you ask her how Ronald McDonald House Charities helped her and her family by giving them a place to stay,

she gets tongue-tied. “I can’t even find the words to say how I feel about what they’ve done for me and my family,” she said. “It’s made a

huge impact on my family to have a place to stay together.” “It’s nice to have other people around you who understand what you’re going

through. We’ve met three different families and when they have a good day, we share their joy,” she said. “It’s so great to see someone else

have a good day. And then, we’ll have a good day, and they’ll enjoy that feeling with us too.”

After more than a decade of surgeries and long hospital stays, Jordan was recently back in the hospital for a number of weeks because

blood had filled his lungs after he lost a tooth. Noelle and her family were so thankful they could come back and stay together as a family

at Ronald McDonald House and be just steps away from Jordan. “You don’t have to worry about anything but caring for your kid while

staying at the House,” says Noelle. “It’s hard to put into words what it has meant for our entire family.”

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SUPPORT FOR THE MOST CRITICAL PATIENTS

“When our twin boys were born premature, we didn’t realize what was going to be

ahead of us. We knew the NICU was in our future, but we hadn’t planned for the stress

of leaving our boys overnight, or having to keep our lives organized while spending every

day in the hospital, or the necessities we’d need access to while at the hospital. Ronald

McDonald Family Room helped fill this void in a way we did not expect. In fact, when we

originally learned of the Family Room, we were a bit doubtful we would use it or need it.

Boy, were we wrong.

The Family Room became our daily stop. We enjoyed donated meals and snacks, warmed up leftovers, and we were just able to get away

and sit in a non-hospital environment where we weren’t reminded of medications, machines, or stress. It also gave us the opportunity to talk

with other parents, which was therapeutic. Every visit to the Family Room, we were greeted with a smile from one of the staff or volunteers.

They always had an ear open when we were willing to talk and they always showed genuine care and concern for our baby boys’ progress.

We even utilized the overnight bedroom once, which was incredibly helpful to calm our nerves because it was the day after being released

from the hospital without both of our sons. We’re grateful for the services, cheer and compassion provided to us during the most stressful

and scary experience of our entire lives. Thank you for all that you do for families.” - The Puleo Family, RMHC Guests

Our three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms provide a haven of respite and

hospitality to families whose children are in treatment at the hospital. Located just

outside the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, these

spaces provide a home-like atmosphere away from the stress of the hospital.

Our five Ronald McDonald Houses help us implement our mission by keeping

153 families close each night. The Houses allow families to eat, sleep and find the

emotional support they need - just blocks from where their child is being treated.

KEEPING KIDS HEALTHY & IN SCHOOL

Opened a fifth Ronald McDonald House near Central DuPage Hospital

5,805 families (10,000 individuals, 41,638 “family nights”) were provided care and comfort through Ronald McDonald House programs saving families $10 million in housing and food costs.

2,539 meals were provided by volunteers in support of families staying at our Ronald McDonald Houses.

2,129 children were provided basic medical care on our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. Treatment included 2,926 vaccinations and 2,007 physicals.

57 students were assisted in achieving their college degrees through our Scholarship Program.

SUPPORTING EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS

Our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, serves as a state-of-the-art medical clinic stretching

40-feet long, 8-feet wide. It’s equipped with two patient exam rooms, a waiting room and

an area to hold patient medical records.

Since 2008, Advocate Children’s Hospital’s Care Mobile partnership with RMHC-CNI has

been widely successful in addressing the needs of high-risk pediatric populations throughout

southern Chicago and parts of northern Illinois. The program’s focus is to provide initial

health screening, immunizations, primary care treatment, and referral/follow up

appointments for everyday and serious medical needs.

While we have seen exceptional advancement in medical care for children, thousands of

children in our local communities do not have access to medical facilities. Fortunately, RMHC-CNI helps address this need through our

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program.

Each year, the Charity awards $4,000/year, renewable scholarships to extraordinary local

high school seniors who are committed to community service and academic excellence.

“Three years ago, I was not sure whether college would be a reality for me. My parents

emigrated from Greece with only ten dollars in their pockets and managed to survive in the

country without any support from their families. My father was the sole wage-earner for our

family and tried his best to provide me with a good living. Then, last February, the

unthinkable happened - my father was killed in a pedestrian accident by a reckless driver.

Our financial constraints became even more severe and it was really difficult to continue my

studies. Mourning his loss while financially taking on the responsibility to support my

non-English speaking mother, took such an emotional toll on me.

I pushed myself to find strength and secured a full-time summer job. I worked 25 hours a

week during the school year to cover the cost of books and tuition. I managed to maintain my

4.0 GPA, was honored with membership to the biological honors society and was named a

Dean’s Scholar. Being a first generation Greek American and college student, I am in the minority in the general college population.

The support of Ronald McDonald House Charities has been invaluable in helping me achieve my liberal arts education. More than ever,

I am motivated to achieve my dream of becoming a physician - to honor my father and to give back to the community. Thank you for

making an investment in getting me where I am today.” - Kathy Rodogiannis, Scholarship Recipient
