ANNUAL REPORT2008-2009

MONTGOMERY MUSEUMOF F INE ARTS

FISCAL YEAR 2008-2009 PROVED to be a challenging year for not only the Museum, but also for our global economy. Many all over the world faced significant financial risks and a decline in economic activity. The Museum was no different as it faced significant cuts in funding from many sources, major changes in senior administration, and potential drops in program participation.

Despite what seemed to be a gloomy start to fiscal year 2008-09, the Museum prevailed and celebrated many successes while managing its limited resources in creative ways. With declines in funding, the Museum moved to more electronic-based communications which helped to contribute to a successful annual Holiday Open House and Flimp Festival, the largest Military Open House in the Museum’s history, and an attendance that exceeded 150,000 visitors. Thanks to the Museum’s loyal patrons, we experienced a positive Bazaar d’Art, raising over $30,000 in the midst of an economic recession. In addition, in May of 2009, the Museum made its first acquisition using funds provided by Ida Belle Young through a bequest designated for the acquisition of traditional American art. The goals of the board and staff in selecting a work for the initial acquisition were to select a work of excellent quality, and to choose a work that would serve as an appropriate memorial to Young and her generosity. The board and staff spent over two years considering various works of art before electing to acquire a very fine painting by American artist, Mary Cassatt.

After an array of temporary and traveling exhibitions, and a host of new educational programs and events, the Museum is poised and ready now more than ever for the coming years.

Many have contributed to the success of the Museum and our deepest appreciation goes to Mayor Todd Strange and County Commission Chairman Elton Dean along with all the members of the City Council and County Commission for their ongoing support of the Museum. Without the financial assistance from our government agencies, this institution would be unable to provide our community with high-quality educational programs and exhibitions throughout the year.

The members of the Museum not only contribute the majority of our Association funding for exhibition and education projects, they also provide thousands of hours of service to the Museum as docents and volunteers. Their tireless efforts and amazing enthusiasm are the primary ingredients in all of the success we have achieved. Special thanks go out to the members of the Board of Trustees and the staff of the MMFA for their hard work and dedication to the mission of the Museum.

As anyone can surmise from a review of this annual report, the administration of this institution and the planning for its future is an enormous team effort involving public and private community leaders, our board, staff, volunteers, and you, our members and visitors. Thank you for your dedication to this wonderful Museum, to our mission, goals, and dreams.

PATRICIA PINCHBACK - President MARK M. JOHNSON - Director

D The MMFA continued to enjoy strong individual and corporate support during its 79th year. A combination of enthusiastic volunteers, member benefits, and the importance of the Museum to south central Alabama resulted in a year of successful campaigns and increased support.

D Pete Knight chaired the 2009 Corporate Partner Campaign, successfully renewing existing business donors at the level of $2,500 or more and soliciting new corporate support for the Museum’s exhibition, acquisition and education programs. Carol Ballard led her Director’s Circle Campaign Committee to record success prior to the annual dinner for major donors in April. Polly Hardegree and her committee kicked off the 2009 Membership Campaign with a contest that resulted in a record number of new members. The strong leadership of Museum board members was the key to the year’s success.

D Bazaar d’Art was 2009’s March fundraiser, and Katharine Harris and Dockery Austin led an active committee in pursuit of pre-loved works of art for the Silent Auction. Museum caterer Jennie Weller provided a wonderful array of delicious food, and successful bidders took home a variety of treasures. The event yielded over $30,000 for the Museum programs.

D Museum members traveled on an ARTrip this year to Fairhope to shop at the 57th Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. Other member events included Culinary Creations, cooking classes with Jennie Weller, and An Artful Bistro, a four-course dinner with a private mini-tour of a current exhibition. MMFA events have introduced many people to the Museum and attracted new members.

DEVELOPMENT

D The Museum received two grants for curatorial initiatives from the National Endowment for the Arts this past fiscal year. One grant supports documentary research for objects in the Museum’s outstanding collection of works of art on paper. The second has allowed the Museum to treat and re-house our significant holdings of Bill Traylor drawings.

D An important local historical document has been transferred to the Museum’s care by the Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery. View of Montgomery, ca. 1870-1880, was owned by the Foundation and displayed at Old Alabama Town for many years. Presumably the work of a local self-taught artist, the oil on canvas depicts the topography of Montgomery in the late nineteenth century. It was determined that in the interests of the long-term survival of the work, it would be best preserved within the art museum environment.

D A long awaited cooperative project with the Museum’s neighbor in the park, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, was realized with the completion of the exhibition, The Art of the Theatre. The exhibition, which also traveled to the Mobile Museum of Art, focused on the creative design and crafts processes that transformed the words of the Bard’s War of the Roses trilogy into a 21st century production.

D North Carolina sculptor Patrick Dougherty created a unique, site-specific sculpture at the Museum’s main entrance in March of 2009. The work is constructed of local saplings woven into large sculptural components that complement the architectural form of the Museum. The sculpture will remain on view for at least a year.

D The first painting to be acquired from the Ida Belle Young Art Acquisition Fund is Mary Cassatt’s Francoise in Green, Sewing, ca. 1908-1909. Cassatt, an American who painted and exhibited with the French Impressionists, is considered one of the finest women artists in the history of art. The work is a lovely example of Cassatt’s mature work, reflecting her experience gained over a professional career of more than thirty years.

EDUCATION

ARTWORKS GALLERYSeveral new exhibits and works of art were

placed in ARTWORKS this year. New gallery guides send visitors on a treasure hunt, helping them to learn more about the exhibits. The updated computer display by Ed Tannenbaum encourages active participation by ARTWORKS visitors, young and old alike.

As an extension of the Spring Fling family day, funded by SITES (Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service), the Metlife Foundation, and Alabama State Council on the Arts, a new interactive exhibit with quilted squares by Collette Trimble, a carved wooden mask by Homer Johnson, and several colorful works of art by Chris Clark were added to the gallery.

With a grant from the ASCA Support the Arts License Tag Committee, four new drawing benches and an interactive magnetic landscape of the Museum and grounds (complete with ducks and turtles!) were added to increase visitor interaction and learning in ARTWORKS.

ARTWORKS CORRIDOR EXHIBITIONSFor the ARTWORKS Corridor exhibitions this

year, 679 entries were received from 41 public and

private schools in the state. A committee of Museum curators, artists, and art teachers selected a total of 216 works of art by kindergarten to college-aged students for four different ARTWORKS Corridor exhibitions.

The Corridor exhibitions reinterpreted the themes of temporary exhibitions on view in the Museum. 230 students and family members attended the opening receptions for the ARTWORKS Corridor exhibitions: Stage Presence, Color and Spirit, 2009 Alabama Statewide Middle School Art Exhibition and Patterns and Paper. The Museum purchased four works of art from the corridor exhibitions, adding to the permanent student art collection.

STUDIO CLASSESEnrollment in studio classes for children (ages

2 – 13) and adults (ages 14 and older) increased this year, with a total of 1,936 participants. The most popular classes for younger students were the weekly After School Art series, Fun With Junk, several ceramic classes, and five weeks of summer Art Camps. By offering half-day as well as full-day options for the camps, the summer enrollment almost doubled.

For adults, the drawing and painting classes and workshops, led by well-known regional and national artists, were filled to capacity. Most of

these classes were offered in connection with a temporary exhibition in the Museum, and included a guided tour in the galleries.

ARTTALK & ARTWALKAs many as 21 area artists brought their work

to ARTtalk six times during the year, for friendly feedback and critiques. For the ARTwalk program, 76 participants visited the studios and galleries of Mandy Bagwell, Marcia Weber, Beryl Chesnutt, Gregory Brown, and Peggy Brown. Following the studio visits, the participants toured related Museum exhibitions and learned about special techniques from each artist in hands-on lessons at the Museum.

COLLABORATIVE DANCE PERFORMANCEThe MMFA education department collaborated

with Gary Moore and the Booker T. Washington (B.T.W.) High School Dance Department on another project, which was very successful in bringing the performing and visual arts together. The BTW performance this year was based on the exhibition The Art of the Theatre, which featured sets, props, and costumes from the War of the Roses trilogy, performed by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in 2007.

The choreographic works of Ballet and the

Bard interpreted several of Shakespeare’s most popular plays: The Tempest, King Lear, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The dance performances were attended by 390 students from the Montgomery area.

SPECIAL FAMILY PROGRAMSIn addition to the annual family programs of

Holiday Open House, FLIMP Festival, and Summer Arts Sampler, the education department presented a family day in connection with the temporary exhibition Ancestry and Innovation: African-American Art from the American Folk Art Museum. With grants from SITES (the Smithsonian Institute of Traveling Exhibitions), the Metlife Foundation, and Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Spring Fling event offered art demonstrations by well-known regional artists (Homer Johnson, Chris Clark, and Amos Kennedy), an interactive musical performance by California artist Carl Winters, art activities in the studios, and guided tours of the exhibition. A total of 2330 visitors participated in the family programs for the year.

ART A LA CARTSpecially trained docents offered Sunday

afternoon art adventures in the Rotunda of the Museum twice monthly. The art activities were related to a temporary or permanent exhibition and included a brief guided tour of the exhibition. Approximately 300 children and their parents participated in the art cart activities during the year.

OUTREACHMore than 7,000 people in the community

participated in outreach efforts by the education staff, docents, and outreach teachers this year. Art in the Afternoon, the Museum’s outreach program created for community centers in the city’s Weed

and Seed target areas, offered after school visual arts classes to more than 600 students during the year at three centers: Goode Street Community Center, Jubilee Community Center, and Davis Elementary School. Art teachers trained by the Museum taught the students new techniques in drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture, with the lessons related to temporary or permanent exhibitions at the Museum. Once in every session during the year all the students came for a field trip to the Museum, to view first hand the works of art they had studied and to create a special art project in the studios. A collaborative effort between the Museum outreach teachers and staff from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival resulted in an outstanding performance (complete with student-designed sets and costumes) by the students at the Jubilee Community Center in December. Art activities, related to Museum exhibitions, were also offered monthly at the Bell Road Library and the Bell Road YMCA.

The docents volunteered many hours helping with other parts of the Museum’s outreach efforts, such as: visiting 28 schools to introduce third graders to the concepts and works of art they would view on their tour to the Museum; offering special art activities at the Jubilee Kidsfest, the Zoo Earth Day, and Eastdale Mall Family Night; and offering art activities for second grade students at one of the underserved schools in the area.

Several teachers and home school parents

checked out the traveling art suitcases to bring art into their classrooms or homes. D 612 people attended gallery talks, lectures

and films at the Museum. Guest speakers included Patrick Dougherty, Kevin Sampson, Marcia Weber, Anton Haardt, Sonia Handelman Meyer, Mia Pearlman, Beverly Erdreich, and Yvonne Wells.

D The Museum also engaged 900 unique visitors through the Guide By Cell audio tour.

D The Museum offered four Senior Citizens Socials in conjunction with temporary exhibitions. A total of 49 individuals were served. After touring the exhibitions, seniors worked on a simple project related to the works they had seen.

D Museum Docents have been busy this year. Each year, the Museum provides free tours to the Montgomery Public School System’s (MPS) kindergarteners and third graders. 3,321 students from both MPS kindergarten and other area schools participated in the Puppet Show and Peekaboo Street tour, while 3,325 MPS third graders enjoyed a gallery tour and studio activity. Art á la Cart and Weekends at One kept both children and adults alike interested and entertained on the weekends.

D There were 19 daytime training sessions and nine evening training sessions for the Museum’s docents. Training addressed gallery teaching, tours, the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and the history of art.

D In addition to system-wide tours, Museum Docents served more than 6,000 visitors – a total of over 12,500 tour participants in all! Docents provided over 2,100 service hours conducting tours.
