Much of our attention at that time was focused on major national disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Fortunately, this year has been quieter on the national disaster front. That does not mean we have not helped out when the need arose. But, the lower number of national disasters has allowed us to turn even more attention to services your American Red Cross chapter provides right here in our own community. Probably most memorable was the important role we played at the time of President Gerald R. Ford’s funeral in January of 2007. With thousands in our community wishing to pay their last respects to Grand Rapid’s popular native son, hundreds of police and security personnel were needed to assure that the memorial event was safe and orderly. The American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids stepped up to the challenge of feeding this group, serving more than 3,200 meals from the mobile canteens of our emergency response vehicles. We also provided water to 12,000 plus mourners as they stood in lines that often stretched over a mile in length to pay their respects. In reflecting on the past year, it’s important to remember that a disaster isn’t just a tornado or a hurricane. Red Cross aid to area residents who were victims of house fires deserves special attention. Through our disaster response team’s communication efforts with area fire departments and other emergency responders, we have been able to help more individuals and families who suffered the devastating loss of their home. In fact, we served over 65% more individuals and responded to 90% more house fires this year! Though Red Cross is often identified with its disaster response role, the programs it offers in the area of emergency preparedness may not be as well known. Many youngsters learn to swim through Red Cross water safety programs; Pre-teens and teens become competent babysitters who assure the safety of the children in their care through our babysitting classes; Countless area residents learn life saving skills through Red Cross CPR and first aid classes. Your local Red Cross works every day to inform local citizens of the steps they need to take to be ready for emergencies or disasters that can happen in their own back yards. We are grateful for your support as we work to fulfill our mission of helping people prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Please remember that a safe community begins with you. Dear Friends of the American Red Cross,

Last year was an extraordinary year.

Get involved with your local Red Cross today!
