Comments on the Annual Report of the Office of Sponsored Research

The 2009-10 year involved many efforts directed at increasing support for sponsored programs activity. Through the year, the Office of Sponsored Research and the Grants Management Office worked with the Research Council, the Task Force on the Creation of a Center for Collaborative Research, and the Research Foundation of SUNY on these endeavors. We surveyed peer institutions on best practices related to collaborative research, assessed our own faculty member’s needs in relation to research interests and support, and worked with representatives from other SUNY institutions to identify a vendor for a system-wide funding opportunities and faculty expertise database which would be supported by the Research Foundation. We believe that these initiatives will further encourage and expand SUNY Geneseo’s sponsored programs in the coming years. 2009-10 Traditional Funding Activities: The dollar value of submissions was at its highest point since 2005-06. Thirty faculty and staff members from sixteen different departments produced a total of 41 submissions. The total value of awards received was also at its highest point since 2005-06. There were a total of 31 active projects during the year, and although total expenditures were down due to the completion of several projects, we expect that expenditures will increase dramatically next year. Faculty members in the department of Physics and Astronomy continued research with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (through the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester), and NASA (through Cornell University), and received a new award from the National Science Foundation. Faculty members in the departments of History and Mathematics also held NSF grants. Two National Science Foundation grants were awarded to Geological Sciences faculty this year, adding to existing research support from the ACS/ Petroleum Research Fund. National Institutes of Health funding supported research by faculty in the departments of Psychology and Biology. Research in Biology was also supported by new awards from the Livingston County Planning Department and JEANSEE, LLC. The Chemistry Department received a second award from the Research Corporation and an award from the National Science Foundation for development of collaborative international research. National Endowment for the Humanities grants continued to support programs offered by English and History faculty members. On-going funding was held by faculty of the School of Education from the NY State Department of Education and the Genesee Valley Heath Partnership and the School of Business received an award from the Livingston County Planning Department. 2009-10 Internal Funding: Despite budget constraints, direct College support for research and scholarship in 2009-10 reached its highest level. In collaboration with the Research Council, the Geneseo Foundation and the Accounting and Grants Management Offices, over 330 internal funding applications from faculty members and students were received and processed, resulting in 323 individual awards totaling $239,475—the highest amount in Geneseo’s history. Total internal funding for our formal grant and fellowship programs, combined with other planned expenditures in support of research and scholarly activities, amounted to more than $257,000. Supported by an increase in funds from the Geneseo Foundation for the 2010-11 year, the Research Council increased award amounts in two programs and will establish a new course release program for proposal writing. GREAT Day 2010: Coordinated by Stephen West, Geneseo’s fourth annual GREAT Day was a huge success, reaching new records with 879 students participating in 490 presentations, performances, and exhibits. Helen Epstein, author of six books of literary non-fiction and the second keynote speaker to be supported by the Jack ‘76 and Carol ’76 Kramer Endowed Lectureship Series, delivered an address on “the truth” in memoir research and writing. 2009-10 Other Initiatives: Faculty and staff pursued funding for other endeavors related to the College’s goals and initiatives related to international relations, community and diversity. In the fall of 2009, the Geography Department welcomed Fulbright Scholar Dr. Eva Tagoe-Darko from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. In the spring of 2010, faculty in the department of Sociology and the School of Education received notice of prestigious Fulbright Scholar awards to India and Jordan and a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad fellowship to India. The Xerox Center for Multicultural Teacher Education staff secured funding for its fourth successful Rochester Young Scholars Academy, “Operation Peace,” and the very successful Real World Geneseo (RWG) program was funded for a second year by the SUNY Office of Diversity and Educational Equity.

The Jack '76 and Carol '76 Kramer Endowed Lectureship

Helen Epstein

Trying to Tell the Truth: Researching and Writing Memoir Abstract of Address Memoir has become the most popular literary genre of our time. Why are readers so interested in the truth of other people's lives? What are the problems a writer faces in researching and writing "the truth?" How does she go about identifying and solving them? Author Helen Epstein gave her answers to these questions, drawing on her 40 years of experience in life writing, including blogs, journals, journalism, her memoirs, her biography of Joe Papp, and her profiles of celebrated musicians in Music Talks. Biography Helen Epstein is the author of six books of literary non-fiction including the memoirs Children of the Holocaust and Where She Came From: A Daughter's Search for her Mother's History and Joe Papp: An American Life -- New York Times Notable Books of the Year. Born in Prague in 1947 and brought to the U.S. as a baby immigrant in 1948, Epstein grew up in New York City. She became a journalist while still a college student, caught in the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Her personal account was published in the Jerusalem Post, where she subsequently worked as a reporter. Following journalism school at Columbia, she taught writing at New York University, where she became the first tenured woman professor in the journalism department and freelanced for the Sunday New York Times and other national publications. She is particularly interested in the arts, psychology, and memoir. Ms. Epstein lives with her husband in Massachusetts and blogs for www.theartsfuse.com. A full list of her publications and activities can be found on her website: www.helenepstein.com.
