MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO, SHANNON STEWART

2018

In our last fiscal year 2018 (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018), our organization reaffirmed and strengthened its commitment to serving a diverse group of communities across the city that are struggling to overcome homelessness and deep poverty.

Our Housing Services program began a dramatic transformation after emerging from the two-year long state budget impasse.  We secured two new contracts that allowed us to provide permanent housing and essential supportive services to thirty new, formerly homeless families in West Humboldt Park, North Lawndale, and Woodlawn.

After several years of declining enrollments, our Foodservice Training program turned a corner and provided almost one hundred individuals with vocational training in the culinary arts.  To revitalize our enrollment we had to find new ways to reach the population of unemployed Chicagoans living on the city’s west and south sides.  We took to the air-waves and advertised through iHeart Media radio stations, finding a population that desperately needed vocational training but had no connection to social services agencies or support networks who could provide them with referrals or counseling.

In Uptown, we went back out on the streets – just like our founder, Lisa Nigro, did with her little red wagon almost thirty years ago – to connect with individuals experiencing homelessness through our newly launched Basic Street Outreach program.  These individuals now enjoy hot, nutritious meals in an atmosphere of dignity and respect at Inspiration Cafe as they work to improve their lives and increase self- sufficiency.

Without the support of our countless donors, volunteers, and partners, we would never have been able to make such a big impact on our community.

Thank you for being a part of our work.
