ANNUAL REPORT
2013
The 2013 calendar year was an exciting year for the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce. We still maintain the same vision – to create an environment that allows business to succeed and the St. Joseph area to prosper. This is a vision we’ve actively pursued since the Chamber’s inception. In 2013, the Chamber recognized the 150th anniversary of its formation as the Board of Trade of St. Joseph.
The Chamber has been through a variety of sizes, names, looks and styles over the years. We changed our name from the St. Joseph Metro Chamber to the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce at the end of 2013. However, our mission has always been the same: to be an advocate for business in the St. Joseph community. We are proud to have flourished in the last 150 years, all the while continuing to look out for our members and grow the local economy with new jobs and investment in the community.
The Chamber’s membership has grown to more than 1,000 members strong in recent years. We’ve seen tremendous involvement from members and the community in a variety of ways during the year, at our events and in our advocacy efforts. Our members continued their strong support of the Chamber, helping staff and volunteers again surpass its annual Total Resource Campaign fundraising goal.
In 2013, the Chamber launched a new initiative to help local small businesses: the Small Business Resource Center, stjosephsmallbusiness.com. This new website is an attempt to connect local small business owners and equip them with the network and tools they need to succeed. The site offers advice from local experts in their various areas of expertise ranging from accounting and finance to marketing and sales. It also has a FAQ section for those with technical
questions about starting a business and a video learning center, for people who are more visual learners.
The Chamber also explored new ways to help grow the St. Joseph economy in 2013. We developed new logos for the Chamber and the Economic Development Partnership. The partnership’s tagline is “Think Outside the Limits.” Staff will urge Kansas City and other business prospects to do just that when expanding or relocating in 2014.
In the following pages, get more of an in-depth look at our economic development and membership initiatives. All were accomplished thanks to the Chamber’s many partnerships in the St. Joseph community, with businesses, government agencies and volunteers.
Economic DevelopmentThe St. Joseph economy grew in large part thanks to expansion of existing businesses:
Triumph Foods added 105 employees and invested $7 million.
Johnson Controls added $10 million in new technology thanks to a new battery project. This is one of St. Joseph’s often untold stories, Johnson Control’s re-search and development division created a new battery that is now being produced at the St. Joseph facility.
Silgan Containers invested $5 million into its facility.
Varco Pruden added 30 new jobs and a $3.5 million investment.
Expansion is evident in Eastowne Business Park, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica’s new 250,000 square foot distribution facility was built in 2013.
International Paper invested $12 million and retained 134 jobs.

21st Century Economic Development PartnershipPartnered with Buchanan County and the City of St. Joseph, more than 140 private sector companies have discovered that investing in the future of St. Joseph pays great dividends, which are reimbursed through job creation, capital investment and overall economic growth. This is the 21st Century Economic Develop-ment Partnership, a results-oriented plan based on community goals and a common agenda for action.
The Economic Development Council, consisting of business, labor, civic and local government leaders, provides leadership, guidance and oversight. The Council meets regularly to review results and provide direction to the Chamber’s economic development efforts. In return, the Chamber implements economic development programs that include business retention and attraction components, while remaining ac-countable to the partnership for results.
