Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church Members and Friends,

About two years ago I began to discern my call to ministry alongside you. I looked at the website and at past annual reports and online articles about SVPC. I was inspired by the wonderful community present in those words and images. Over the past few months you have confirmed my sense of call here, and you’ve proven that this is indeed a caring, energetic, and dedicated congregation. Already I have been blessed by our wonderful music and worship, I have witnessed joy in our children and youth, and I have seen faithfulness in so many through service work, study, or fellowship.

But I’m not called to just enjoy the rich treasure that SVPC already is. I’m called to be a part of the bold new witness God’s Spirit is helping us become. The recent Mission Study Report

states, “Our discernment process has uncovered several themes for God’s call for our future, including celebrating and honoring our strengths and traditions, improving how we reach out to share God’s love, deepening con-nections with each other and becoming more engaged in the local community, inspiring and supporting Christian discipleship and growth, and developing future leaders…. We know that to step into the church of the future and respond to God’s call on our lives, we will have to change.”

I am learning to trust the vision and courage of our elders, staff, and other leaders as they move us forward to be God’s changing church. I will do my best to walk this path faithfully and humbly with you. That is why, in spite of the uncertainties of transition, next year’s budget includes things like addi-tional funding for marketing to outside communities and

funding for an associate pastor to strengthen our evangelism, discipleship, and young adult ministries. These efforts represent a challenge—but they are also a path to fulfilling the vision God gifted us in the Mission Study Report.

I look forward to embracing these challenges and opportunities with you. Let us be a part of what God’s mighty Spirit is doing in our world!

Councilby Judi Pogue, Council Chair

Lead Elders of each ministry team meet on the second Tuesday of each month to assist the Head of Staff in preparing for the monthly meeting of session. In addition to sharing infor-mation about plans being considered by various ministry areas, reviewing the monthly financial report, and bringing matters to the attention of the Head of Staff that need to be considered by session, the meeting provides an opportunity for lead elders to communicate with each other.

At the January 2017 session retreat ministry teams updated their charters and established their focus and goals for the new year. Some teams have changed names and responsibility for

certain programs has been reassigned to provide for more balanced duties.

At the 2017 retreat, session approved naming the Personnel Committee as a ministry team, to be chaired jointly by the Chair of Council and the existing committee chair person.

At the February 14 council meeting, Comptroller Tavie Armfield, and Pastor Debbie Whaley gave elders an update on ministry area budgets and how to interpret the monthly financial reports they receive. Bill Prior, Discipleship lead elder, and Gary Ruschke, Mission & Service lead elder, led a debrief discus-sion about the Jim Wallis speaking event.

During the following months there were oppor-tunities to build relation-ships and to learn about the responsibilities of their role as a lead elder. Members reviewed reports that were being prepared for session,

asked questions for clarifica-tion and made suggestions for making the information clearer when it was presented for consideration by session. Such reports included the monthly financial reports, plans for the stewardship campaign, a report on the Radical Hospitality program led by the Welcome & Hospitality ministry team, and the Pastor Nominating Committee’s process.

Leadership training included a session on Assumption Clearing, which was lead by Jennifer Britton in March, and in June a video by DeWitt Jones on Everyday Creativity.

Pastor Hardy met with Council for the first time in August, when lead elders and their ministry area plans and goals were introduced. The final months of 2017 were filled with sharing the activi-ties of each group, planning for Hardy’s installation, and discussing future goals and plans.

Coming off of the session retreat in early January 2017, W&H revamped the ministry team charter that now includes the following vision which guided us all year:

The vision of the Welcome & Hospitality Ministry team is that all attendees to Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church feel genuinely welcome, included and valued from the moment they step on the campus to the moment they leave and that they leave inspired to come back for more.

Welcome & Hospitality Ministryby Jen Britton, Elder

God was with us all year and infused our serving hearts by keeping us focused on how to make the campus and the feel of being here warmer than ever!

Fifteen receptions were planned and hosted by W&H in 2017; typically there are only a handful. Receptions for the following events included refreshments, greeters and often welcome booth staffing: speaker Jim Wallis; departing interim

pastor Debbie Whaley; pastor Hardy H. Kim’s candidating Sunday; pastor Hardy’s first Sunday; his installation service; The Music School Director Doris Harry’s retirement, and Associate Youth Director Kurt Miller’s departure.

We continued our tradition of providing re-freshments and a welcoming presence at our Welcome Booth for PELC’s annual kick-off week, Vacation Bible School, the spring and Christmas choir concerts, Trunk-or-Treat, registration and meal provision for the October MobilePack, and the Christmas Eve hot cocoa and fire pit gatherings. The annual All-Church Picnic in June at Las Palmas Park

was also planned and hosted by W&H.

W&H added several Welcome banners to the outside of the sanctuary and another to Building 300 that displays “Welcome” in more than 10 languages. Other special touches include greening up the coffee carts, offering donut holes on Communion Sundays after the 10 AM service, and sometimes providing fresh flowers and/or decorations for the receptions.

W&H offers some financial and some volunteer support to other ministry teams and church staff for the seasonal community dinners and the annual Soup-and-Sing in December.

W&H also took up the charge of how we might incorporate evangelism into what we do. We brain-stormed six ideas with the favorite activity being to share our personal faith stories in as many situa-tions as we can when we are serving as W&H ambassa-dors at the events and in the interactions on campus.

W&H is grateful for the core group of six team

members and additional five folks who consistently support events and efforts all year. Going forward we are excited to continue to serve God and our community with a focus on volunteer engagement in all that we do. We hope you will join us in these efforts.

Worship Ministryby Diana Aldrich, Elder

Worship is to be the center of our life together as a church community as we are drawn near to the heart of God. Some of us worship contem-platively with Taizé music at Early Light, some seek the familarity of traditional hymns with the choir and organ at the 10 AM service, and still others desire the energy and informal music at Intersections.

This year there were three One-Service Sundays. In March and December the one service at 10 AM was followed in the evening by the spring and Christmas choir concerts. The November 5 service, held at 2 PM, was a Presbytery event at which our new head of staff, Rev. Hardy H. Kim, was installed. Each of these three services incorporated elements of contemplative, traditional, and contempo-rary worship.

In addition to the weekly Sunday services, there were special services. On Ash

Wednesday at 5:15 PM this service was designed for children and adults with experience stations as well as the placing of ashes; the second service at 7:30 PM was traditional. Maundy Thursday worship included the washing of feet, and Good Friday shared the Seven Last Words of Christ.

In June we celebrated Interim Pastor Debbie Whaley’s guidance for two years, and in August Pastor Hardy joined us as Head of Staff. Session approved the creation of a staff position, Worship Director, and Beth Treitel was hired. Her care of details makes worship seem seamless.

Both staff and volunteers

participate in planning and leading worship. Caring for worship includes everything from cleaning the sanctuary to ushering for a memorial service to reading scripture to playing the flute—the list goes on. We are grateful for each person and the gifts he or she brings to worship.

As we look to 2018, we are planning One-Service Sundays on April 29 and December 2 with choir concerts following those services. We are also working with Children’s Ministry to move toward children being more involved in regular Sunday worship. May God continue to faithfully meet us and guide us in 2018!

Youth Ministryby Kelly Shaver, Elder

Youth ministry has always been a vibrant and busy ministry area and this year has been no exception! As we look toward the year ahead, we are continuing to focus on bringing the youth of our church community closer to God and to each other. This year, we have gone through many changes and are looking forward to what God has planned for us in the coming year.

We welcomed Paul Scholz, our new Director of Youth Ministry, said good-bye to Kurt Miller, our Associate Director of Youth Ministry, and are now looking for a new associate director to help run our youth programs and inspire our youth. The youth have also been involved in

welcoming Pastor Hardy, with youth and youth advisors serving as elders on session and as members of the Pastor Nominating Committee.

This year, our annual CARAVAN trip took us to the Yakama Nation in Washington state where we worked with and learned from the indigenous community. We learned about their history and our own, and experienced the way they worship the Creator God. Our students and advisors had the opportunity to talk with the community’s elders, experience tribal traditions, and participate in their worship.

As we reflect on the previous year and continue to serve our church’s youth,

we are continually reflect-ing on God’s plan for our ministry and how we can better serve our youth and their families. We are excited for this year’s CARAVAN trip to Tucson, Arizona to work with BorderLinks, followed by the start of the new school year and program year in September. Our volunteer youth advisors meet with our students every week in small groups, at FLASH and CLUE, and at church on Sunday. Our youth staff are constantly planning events and modifying programs to help the youth grow in their faith and their relation-ships with each other and our community. Our youth lead their peers by serving on session, TMNT (youth leadership), and the youth worship band.

We are so grateful for the commitment our church has made to our youth, and we serve with joy and faith every day.

Discipleship Ministryby Barry Vickrey, Elder

Under the leadership of elder Bill Prior and with counsel from interim pastor Debbie Whaley, new Head of Staff Hardy Kim, and support from marketing manager Kris Sheridan, Discipleship revised its charter and provided a wide range of programs in 2017:

Jim Wallis Lecture, January 30

Discipleship, Mission & Service, and the San Jose Presbytery’s Peace & Justice Task Force co-sponsored the public lecture “Bridge to a New America” by Jim Wallis. More than 900 people from the church and wider community attended. The lecture was followed by moderated discussions and presentations on mission opportunities on Sundays in February and March.

Special events in 2017 included a re-enactment of the life of architect Julia Morgan and musical programs featuring Mary Green Vickrey and the Mountain View High School Madrigals. PW honored Shannon Reilly and Fran Lusk with Life Membership Awards.

2018 and Beyond

Discipleship will again offer a wide range of programs while seeking to find new opportunities for outreach, especially to young adults. The anticipated addition of a new assistant pastor in early 2019 is crucial to maximiz-ing opportunities in this ministry area.

Caring Ministryby Val Weirauch, Elder

Caring ministry continues to work on how we will fulfill our vision of becoming a community that actively embraces, instills hope and positively impacts people in need, so that no one feels forgotten. In other words, how do we as a congrega-tion live into who God has created us to be? How do we live out Christ’s love in

our daily lives? A big focus in 2017 was to touch base with the various ministry groups who are tied to our ministry area: affirming the leaders of these groups, listening to their experi-ences and concerns as well as their hopes and dreams. We still have more to do on this front. The following groups are a part of the Caring ministry community: Deacons, Young Adults, SAGE including adult luncheons, Spice (50+ singles group), the prayer team, the prayer shawl group, Stephen Ministry and the Pastoral Care Team. Looking forward into 2018 and building from our core values of being Spirit-led, compassion-ate, accepting, loving, and present, we want to both ensure these groups continue to gain the support they need to care for our community as well discern further how the Spirit is calling us as a congregation to be Christ’s love lived out.

Mission & Service Ministryby Elsa Amboy, Elder

Mission & Service started off 2017 in a big way by welcoming Jim Wallis, the nationally known founder of Sojourners Magazine and champion of social justice. Jim challenged us to “be the church” out in the world by living into Jesus’ command from Matthew 25 to care for our brothers and sisters who are poor, marginalized, and oppressed.

Inspired by Jim’s words, the Mission & Service team focused our energy on four core ministries: the Homeless, the Hungry, Immigrants and Refugees.

In 2017 we hosted the

Faith in Action Rotating Shelter for its final year of operation. We would like to thank Cathey Edwards for her many years of faithful service to this ministry. We also supported the HomeFirst Winter shelter (with donations of funds and toiletries), the Bill Wilson Center, and the Front Door

Ministry and Women’s Gathering Place of First Presbyterian San Jose.

SVPC took action to fight hunger both close to home and abroad. Locally we supported mission partners Sunnyvale Community Services and Our Daily Bread. The 2018 MobilePack was a great success with the help of 200 enthusiastic vol-unteers from SVPC. A grand total of 202,392 life-saving meals were packed this year—enough to feed 1,191 children for a year!

This year saw a burgeon-ing immigrant ministry start with our newest partners in ministry, Amigos de Guadelupe. Several SVPC members piloted a mentoring

need to succeed in their new communities.

We are able to effectively reach out in love because of the generosity and hard work of the SVPC congregation. Thank you for a great year of ministry.

program for college students who are immigrants or come from first-generation immigrant families, many of whom are the first members of their family to attend college.

While the national con-versation rages over whether we should welcome refugees, SVPC continues to support Immanuel House and Refugee Transitions with food pickups, donations, work days, and assisting newcomers in becoming self-sufficient in the Bay Area by helping them attain the English language, life, job, and academic skills they

Ministry Resourcesby Dave Morley, Elder

The purpose of Ministry Resources is to oversee the prudent stewardship of the Church’s financial and physical resources that will enable a vital, long-term ministry. We accomplish this via monthly meetings (and ad hoc meetings as needed) and working closely with staff to ensure that the church’s resources (both financial and physical) are being managed in ways consistent with the church’s goals.

We facilitate the financial health of the church by:

Planning and carrying •out the annual steward-ship campaign Developing and moni-•toring the income and expenses of the church budget throughout the year Collaborating on budget •with other ministry teams including Personnel Strategic planning •for housing stability for pastors Overseeing and planning •

for growth of the Endowment Fund Overseeing donor des-•ignated and special fund accounts As needed, organizing •capital campaigns Conducting tri-annual •review of the outreach groups (PELC and The Music School)

We facilitate the maintenance and improvement of the church’s physical resources by:

Overseeing the main-•tenance, cleaning, and security of the buildings and grounds Establishing policies •around rental and use for the facilities, including energy efficiency and becoming more green Conducting long-term •planning for expansion and modification of the facilities, including solar panel installation Overseeing the main-•tenance of the grounds and landscaping

Overseeing the mainte-•nance and upgrading of furnishings and equipment Maintaining the •Memorial Garden and Memorial Wall Overseeing the manses •(Ithaca House and Hollenbeck House)

Nominating Committeeby Dave Bentley, Elder

The Nominating Committee sought and listened to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we worked to establish a list of nominees for church offices. The committee members were as enthusiastic as they were diligent as they shared ideas and responsibilities. The 2018 Nominating Committee will soon start identifying church members to serve as Deacons or Elders for the Class of 2021 as well as other possible roles. We appreciate your prayers for us and our work and encourage you to consider with prayer the call if you are invited to serve.

Children’s Ministryby Carol Heath, Director of Family Ministries

Children’s Ministry is thankful to be celebrating a year filled with joy, faith, and exciting change. We focus on nurturing our children and their families in their faith, offering programs that engage and support them throughout the year. We have had a year filled with exciting transitions and changes, while main-taining our commitment to the goals and values for Children’s Ministry.

Our mission is to nurture and support children and their families in their spiritual growth and de-velopment by (1) offering outstanding programs that

share the good news of Jesus Christ, and (2) fostering and encouraging mentor relation-ships between children and other adults in the church to help instill a deep and abiding faith.

To carry out this mission, we are committed to nurturing the relationships that impact and influence our children, teaching biblical literacy, and ensuring an inclusive environment. Our many programs, run

by our dedicated staff and carried out by amazing volunteers, help accomplish this. These include nursery and child care, BLAST and Stars Church School, Intersections Church School, LOGOS, Vacation Bible School, Children’s Choirs, and special events.

This year has also been one of change. Exciting life transitions for several of our staff resulted in

Page 19: Annual Report - SVPC · Rebecca Sugumar Staff Advisor: Karin Hejmanowski Discipleship Ministry 2017 *Bill Prior Steve French Elsbeth Tebrake ... step on the campus to the moment they

their departure from Children’s Ministry. We are so grateful for their many years of dedication and excellence. In their place, we welcomed new staff members and are excited by their ideas, passion, and energy: Carol Tadros (Children’s Intersections Associate), Emily Cramer (Associate Director of Children’s Ministry/Child Care Coordinator), and

Donna Dillard (Inclusion Coordinator). Under the larger umbrella of Family Ministries, our collaboration with Youth Ministries has been exciting and fruitful. Integrating our thinking and planning across the continuum from childhood through high school has enabled us to take a holistic view of our programs and how they are connected. This structure is creating synergies that will benefit our children

and their families in many ways in the coming year.

Looking ahead, we continue to think intergenerationally and are excited to be looking at expanding children’s in-volvement in worship. We believe this will help our children forge long-lasting ties with the larger church and their faith, and further integrate them with our church community.

The Music School is an outreach program of SVPC, founded by Doris Harry in 1977 with a committee of supporters including Rev. Dr. Bruce Coleman, Dorothy Givens, Barbara Frevert, Ruth Rodgers, Tony Harry, and Don De’Angelo, which eventually became an advisory board including Bill Grafft, Ed Fraser, Coleen Hausler, Ken Kishi, and other members of the community. Our fabulous faculty has been led by inspirational educators Jan Williams, Peggy Grettum, Deb Sanfilippo, and Jill Denny, and more master teachers.

What began with 13 students has now grown to hundreds of students every year, participating in classes, lessons, workshops and camps. Our student alumni are making music all over the country and internation-ally, teaching, performing, and passing on music to their children.

The Music Schoolby Chantelle Urbina, Director

Performance an important part of music education, and it is a wonderful way to reach out and share with our families and the community. Every year our students and faculty participate in 14+ recitals, 3 musicals, 3 choral concerts, preschool performances, and scholar-ship benefit concerts. We are continually sharing in the community through musical performances in hospitals, retirement homes, Alzheimer care facilities, and events.

2017 marked The Music School’s 40th anniversary, and we celebrated with a wonderful gathering of students, families, teachers, former teachers, student alumni, and community

supporters. Also this past year, Doris Harry ended her term as Director. She was honored in worship with heartfelt words from Diana Aldrich and a special recognition by the SVPC congregation. Our students dedicated the Annual Choral Festival to Doris, and she conducted us all in a favorite piece, May the Music Never End.

As we begin a new chapter, we look forward to continuing our quality music programs, and exploring new opportunities for children, families, and students of all ages. Though there are many other places where one can learn and study music, our goal is to include musi-cianship, community, and unique, meaningful experi-ences. We believe that music is a source of joy, a universal language, and a wonderful way to work collaboratively with others.

Many, many thanks for the decades of support!

Presbyterian Early Learning Centerby Grace Randle, Executive Director

PELC is an outreach program of Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church. PELC began as a small outreach preschool of our church and has grown to be one of the oldest, largest and most highly desired child care centers in Sunnyvale, celebrating 57 years of quality childcare.

At PELC learning happens everywhere! Children are given the tools to explore in a friendly, safe and happy place that provides many opportunities for creativity, exploration, adventure, and play. And, as Mr. Rogers says, “Play is children’s work.” It is a joy beyond measure to witness children as they work so hard in a loving environment with their amazing, creative, and oftentimes inspiring play.

You can hear these happy children on the playground—running, riding bikes, playing basket-ball, creating intricate struc-tures in the sand or playing

chase with teachers, taking turns, cooperating, planning, exercising, laughing, all while growing and learning. The children are trying out new things (have you seen the igloo?), learning songs, dancing, building space-ships, cooperating to figure out how to build villages, driving to imaginary lands, singing in the rain, creating mud concoctions in the dirt area, and role-playing in dress-up clothes. Everywhere you look there are happy children playing!

PELC offers families a choice of programs to fit each family’s needs. We begin with programs for babies as young as 5 months old for either 1, 2 or 3 days a week. When our youngest children turn 2 we offer part-time preschool for 2’s, 3’s and 4’s. Classes are offered 2, 3 or 5 days a week with a choice of morning or afternoon. Lastly we offer full-time preschool for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds, all day,

7 AM–6 PM Monday–Friday.Every year we consider

new ideas and suggestions for programming. As the public schools began offering transitional kindergarten (TK) for 4-year-olds, PELC changed class offerings to better fit the needs of the church and community.

Children at PELC are happy because they are in an environment where they are offered wonderful learning opportunities in a safe, rewarding, quality program with trained, talented, and loving teachers.

Financial Reportby Tavie Armfield, Church Comptroller

The current fiscal year started in April 2017 with a $60K challenge and will likely end with a surplus instead of a deficit. Praise God! Because of faithful giving and careful spending, the surplus is expected to be $20–$30K. Because of your generosity we received more contributions than expected in both pledge and non-pledge categories.

Looking forward, estimated giving for 2018 is expected to increase 3% over last year and most of this increase comes from non-pledge giving. Pledged

income total is unchanged. Faith giving as seen in the budget chart on the next page represents additional contributions expected based on historical trends.

The current draft budget for our next fiscal year shows an expected shortfall of $127,580 as our facility upkeep and employee and marketing expenses increase. Our need is for additional giving to help erase this deficit. Session would like to encourage those who are able, especially those from whom we have not yet received a pledge, to let

the church know what their anticipated giving will be for this next year.

Special Mission Offerings are given in addition to the budget and usually exceed our expectations. These offerings include One Great Hour of Sharing, Peace and Global Witness, and Christmas Eve. This year the Christmas Eve offering was a record high and went to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

We give thanks for the strong, faithful and con-sistent generosity of our church community!
