Introduction
The idea of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar was first
conceived by a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna named Swami Turiyananda.
He inspired Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya to start a school.
Vidyachaitanya rented a small house at Mihijam in May 1922 and started
a school with three day-scholars immediately. Eight months later, in
January 1923, he left Mihijam and came to Deoghar with twelve students.
Staying in a house on Rohini Road for one and a half months, he
subsequently shifted to another place on the Kachahari Road. Thereafter,
in mid 1924, he once again shifted Vidyapith to the Khema Villa and the
Bama Villa of Deoghar.
Meanwhile, the work of procuring a plot of land went on in full
progress. After its accomplishment, the portion at Khema Villa was
removed in 1925 to a couple of newly constructed houses, keeping the
other portion at Bama Villa for a while more. Finally, when Vidyapith
was totally shifted in its new premises permanently, Swami Shivanandaji
Maharaj, the then President of the Ramakrishna Order paid a visit and
inaugurated it ceremonially on January 19, 1926, the Saraswati Puja
day. The day is a red letter day in the history of Vidyapith.
To shape Vidyapith from scratch, Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya
had to struggle hard. Swami Turiyananda appreciated him
wholeheartedly for his back breaking efforts. He showed great
satisfaction over his success and affectionately called Vidyapith “A
Brahmacharya Vidyalaya”.
Shivanandaji Maharaj was deeply impressed by Vidyapith’s
dedicated services to the poor. He said: “I visualize a great future for
Vidyapith. I am convinced that great work will be done through this
institution.” His vision came true.
Swami Saradananda, the then General Secretary of the
Ramakrishna Mission and disciple of Sri Ramakrishna extended all
support during Vidyapith’s formative years.
Brahmachari Vidyachaitanya became a Sannyasin in due course
and received the monastic name of Swami Sadbhavananda. In his first
report as Secretary of Vidyapith, he wrote: “Living in touch with
Sannyasins, the boys breathe here an atmosphere of sacrifice and purity.
The habit of self-help which strengthens the character of a man and
makes him fit for the struggle of life is also carefully cultivated in the
boys. By locating the school at a healthy place and by giving boys proper
physical training the institution aims at the improvement in their health.
In short, it affords to its boys secular culture based on spirituality.”
1
Vidyapith has been relentlessly following the principles Swami
Sadbhavananda laid down at the outset. It trains boys academically,
intellectually, physically, aesthetically, morally and spiritually. In a word,
Vidyapith is committed to Swami Vivekananda’s “Man Making
Education”.
Deoghar
Deoghar is a well known place of worship. It is a place of Lord
Shiva with an ancient temple of Baba Vaidyanath. It is also a Shaktipith
which is believed to have been harbouring the ‘heart’ of Goddess Sati.
Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda made
pilgrimages to Deoghar at different times. Deoghar therefore has a
special significance in the history of the Ramakrishna Movement.
Besides, the ‘educational work’ of Ramakrishna Mission began formally
from here with the opening of the Vidyapith school.
A Premier Institution
A small school initially, Vidyapith has now grown into a premier
institution of the country with many activities added to it. It has given
credence to its merit as a true service Institution by its rich social
contributions over the years. This has been possible because of
indefatigable labour and persistent prayers of the monks, workers and
devotees of the Ramakrishna Order.
Since a good deal of spade-work by its pioneers had gone into its
beginning, Vidyapith stands on a solid foundation and eventually steers
past many challenges. As a result, it grows from strength to strength,
making ripples in society.
Nine Decades
Vidyapith has now completed ninety one years of its existence.
It is, therefore, rich in experience and expertise. Witnessing ups and
downs within this period, it had slices of joy and ounces of sorrow. Its
defining moment, however, arrived when it was conferred the “National
Award for outstanding work in the field of child welfare” by the
Government of India in 1986. In recognition of its excellence, the Central
Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi had also honoured Vidyapith
with “Permanent Affiliation”. There are, otherwise, accolades galore to
its credit, from its exceptional performances in numerous other fields of
activity.
2
Vidyapith Today
The school is permanently affiliated to the Central Board of
Secondary Education, New Delhi. It has presently 504 students on its
Roll from classes VI to XII. Its residential section is divided into 16 Dhams
(Houses) named after the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.
Vidyapith lays emphasis on value-based education. Boys, along
with their daily lessons in academic studies, receive instructions in Indian
Culture & Value Education (ICVE). They attend morning and evening
prayers in the shrine everyday. And, if need be, innovations in their
training are also made, keeping the requirements of the changing time in
view. In fine, for a comprehensive growth of boys, efforts are being
applied to combine a modern method of education with a traditional
method of Gurukula system, as far as practicable.

Character Building Initiatives
* Emphasis is given on punctuality and regularity and on respect to
teachers and elders.
* Children were taught Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings “All roads lead to
the same Goal - all spiritual practices lead to the same God”.
Value Education
Discipline is considered the cardinal virtue in Vidyapith. It expects
the students to be honest, obedient, respectful, dutiful and sympathetic.
On top of all, it wants that they should have love for the nation and its
less fortunate citizens.
An atmosphere of devotion and dedication, the Vidyapith holds,
is absolutely necessary for proper education. Congregational prayers,
devotional songs, fortnightly Ram Nam Sankirtan, Janmastami, Shiva
Ratri, Holi, Sri Sri Saraswati Puja, Viswakarma Puja, birthday
celebrations of spiritual leaders are some of the means by which this
atmosphere is maintained. Boys take part in the shrine duties and
ceremonial worships on various occasions.
The students clean their hostels in the morning and tend their
gardens. The junior boys practise Vedic Chanting regularly. Senior
Secondary students chanted the Hanuman Chalisa every Tuesday and
Saturday. As an auspicious beginning, Vidyarthivrata Sankalpa with
Vedic Homa is performed every time for the new entrants to classes VI
and XI.
As a part of moral and value based education in Vidyapith, there
is a tradition of awarding prizes for Best Inculcation of Values, Best
Behaviour and Best Leadership to the boys of classes X and XII. This
year the prizes for Best Inculcation of Values, Best Behaviour and Best
4
Leadership were given respectively to Ayush Raj, Aditya Prakash and
Adarsh Kumar Singh (of class X) and Utkarsh, Subham Mishra and
Purushottam Dutta (of class XII).
The purpose of the education process of Vidyapith is to achieve
a comprehensive growth in the students. It believes youths academically
accomplished, intellectually sharp, compassionately sensitive,
physically active, morally sound and spiritually evolved are the real
assets of the nation.

premises and at District Parade Ground during the Independence Day
and the Republic Day celebrations.
Soldiers of the Ramgarh Cantonment (Sikh Regiment) trained
the boys for Parade and Band display in Army style.

“VIDYAPITH”, a school Magazine, was published like every year
with the writings from students, staff, monks as well as guest
contributors.

Relief Activities and Nara-Narayan Seva
* On 31st October 2012 Vidyapith started blanket distribution and
concluded on 9th
December, 2012. Altogether 750 blankets were
distributed among poor old Santhali people from remote villages.
* A quantity of 675 Kgs. skimmed milk was distributed among the
poor and needy children.
* More than 5000 devotees and poor people were fed in the Nara-
Narayan Seva on the occasions of Sri Sri Sarada Devi’s Tithi Puja,
Swami Vivekananda’s Tithi Puja, Mahastami Day, Saraswati Puja
and on Sri Sri Ramakrishna’s Tithi Puja.
Dairy, Bakery and Flower Garden
Vidyapith has a dairy with mechanical milking facility, having
an average yield of approximately 450 litres per day. There is a Bakery
to meet the internal requirements of loaves, biscuits, cakes and other
confectionaries. All these units functioned satisfactorily.

Spots of Special Interest within Vidyapith Premises
Museum:
Built with the guidance of National Museum, this museum of
modest size comprehensibly represents the rich heritage of India. India’s
achievements in religion, arts, sciences, literatures and other spheres
through the ages have been depicted in it. An important place has been
given to the tribal cultures and lifestyles of India’s indigenous peoples,
employing relevant models, materials and images. Besides, it presents a
collection of objects, photographs and accounts of personalities
connected with the development of this Institution over the decades.
There is also a department devoted to the life and contribution of Sri
Sarada Devi.
Ramakrishna Darshan:
A permanent exhibition consisting of rare photographs, fibre
glass relief works and descriptions related to them, Ramakrishna
Darshan is a story of Ramakrishna Movement graphically said. It
chronologically demonstrates the history of the Movement, showing
the roles played by Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami
Vivekananda and his brother disciples. It lays emphasis on two visits of
Swami Vivekananda to the West, his interactions with many important
people abroad and views of well known Indian thinkers influenced by
him.
Aviary:
An island of birds, the aviary contains some birds of uncommon
varieties and coloured plumages, such as the love bird, speaking Mynah,
wild peacock and Kakatuah. They are being provided with natural
habitats in big cages. A few white hares are also kept with them there. It
is actually a piece of garden with birds, flowers, trees and cactuses.
Swimming Pool:
The swimming pool is a comparatively recent addition to
Vidyapith. As stated earlier, boys use it regularly to learn swimming
from a qualified instructor. Its water is being maintained clean, free
from germs and contaminations by means of advanced technology.
Acknowledgement
Vidyapith humbly acknowledges the services of all. It offers
hearty and grateful thanks to its donors and well-wishers as well as to
those who helped it either creating endowments or providing necessary
materials.14
