Dear Donors, Friends, and Land Lovers,

Spotting a bald eagle roosting along the river, feeling a soft breeze in the pines, watching a herd of wintering elk graze in a rancher’s field, all enjoyed within our spectacular Rocky Mountain setting of lush valleys and clean water – these are the essential experiences of life in Eagle County. Together, we seek to protect these vast, untrammeled natural landscapes. They evoke a sense of reverence for the miracles of nature and sustain us, both body and soul. Thank you for your participation in supporting our work in saving these life-affirming places and experiences forever.

2015 and 2016 brought significant enhancements to EVLT and fantastic celebrations of conservation at our events. The annual Legacy Festival brings together hundreds of community members to celebrate the conservation accomplishments of all our conservation-minded community partners. In 2016 we held our first annual Farm to Fork dinner and dance, generously hosted at a secluded location in Lake Creek.

Nevertheless, our natural landscape faces challenges anew. The rising economy is increasing the pace of growth, industry, and development. Seventy percent of the I–70 corridor between East Vail and the western county line is already developed or subdivided for development and we expect increased development pressure into our most remote and cherished places in the coming years.

With your help, EVLT is prepared to take on this challenge. Thanks to increased tax incentives for conservation in 2015, along with partnership and collaboration within our peer organizations and funding partners through 2016, and entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Walking Mountains Science Center to help connect youth education to land conservation, EVLT has even more tools in its toolbox to increase the pace of land conservation.

But our greatest thanks goes to you, our supporters, who care about our natural world and our responsibility to protect it.

Sincerely,

Andie Bombard

NANCY GLASS

Office Manager

After years of visiting family in the Eagle County, Nancy came to EVLT eager to explore all the area has to offer.

Her enthusiasm for wildlife and wild areas began in Ohio, where she grew up on the edge of a forested ravine. Her varied experience began while working in an administrative capacity in the corporate world (primarily investment banking and commercial real estate) and then finally as a paralegal in a corporate office and legal secretary in a large law firm. At this point, she returned to school and ultimately earned an M.S. in biology from the University of West Florida, which enabled her to work on several endangered species and conservation projects as well as teach biology classes at a community college.

Nancy is an avid outdoorswoman and traveler, seeking adventure in her Airstream as far east as Newfoundland, as far north and west as Alaska, and as far south as Key West. These travels have solidified her passion for the conservation of wild places and she is very excited to contribute to conservation through her role at EVLT.

NEW STAFF IN 2016

JESSICA FOULIS

Stewardship and Outreach Manager

Longtime local and EVLT friend, Jessica Foulis joined EVLT’s staff in 2016 to monitor EVLT’s conservation easements yearly and coordinate community hikes, help with events, and tend EVLT’s Future Conservationists Program in collaboration with partner organizations.

Jessica was previously the area’s Blue Trail Coordinator for American Rivers, and has been a conservation professional for more than 10 years, working at Walking Mountains Science Center in their Graduate Fellowship Program and as a Natural Science Educator. She also has professional trail crew training and was lead horticulturist for Red Sky Ranch Golf Course. She is currently finishing her master’s degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources at CSU and has a B.S. in Wildlife Sciences.

Jessica enjoys supporting the work of such a valuable organization in Eagle County, helping to protect our natural resources and way of life.

In order to have the greatest possible impact on conservation efforts in Eagle County, EVLT believes strongly in the value of partnering and the power of collaboration. Our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Walking Mountains Science Center is just one example of this innovative collaboration, connecting youth directly to conserved lands while educating them about the importance of conserving these lands for years to come. Via this partnership and others, including Eagle County Open Space and Eagle River Watershed Council, as well as our programs detailed below, we are accomplishing more land conservation impact.

Environmental educators help us convey the importance of land stewardship and conservation at a young age. Youth leadership organizations help deliver this same message to our future leaders, By working with our local watershed group, we reach new constituents and provide new insights into the importance of caring for water as an essential piece of land conservation. By leveraging our collaborative strengths, all these organizations will rise together to protect the lands we love through education and experiential learning.

FUTURE CONSERVATIONISTS

EVLT is proud to collaborate with partner organizations to deliver hands-on conservation education lessons, and help facilitate service projects that allow youth to give back to the land. By conducting the program at three public conservation easements held by EVLT, youth learn about the different values of conservation (including open space, recreation, education, agricultural heritage, habitat protection, and scenic views). This education and outreach project is possible because of the generous support of our

PARTNERSHIPS

partners including Vail Resorts EpicPromise.

COMMUNITY LAND CONNECTION SERIES

Each month we team up with other organizations to connect people with the lands we love. Whether an EVLT-led hike on a public parcel under conservation easement, a service project to improve habitat, or a bus tour to area ranches, this series is an opportunity to leverage local efforts to encourage people to appreciate and protect our beautiful home and the wildlife that live here. Each outing is a chance to learn about Eagle County’s natural treasures and ask questions of local experts.

In 2016, as EVLT celebrated 35 years of conservation and 7,700 acres protected, the organization developed a new strategic plan to guide and focus its land conservation efforts over the next three years.

The strategic plan also provides a framework for the organization to improve its standards & practices and maintain accreditation with the Land Trust Alliance, the national association of land trusts, which requires

UPDATE FROM EVLT—STRATEGIC PLANcompliance with rigorous best practices. Approved by the Board of Directors in May 2016, the plan was created with input from board members, staff, and a broad representation of stakeholders from our community.

The plan includes five goals, each having a series of objectives. These goals inform EVLT’s direction and focus over the next three years as we work to achieve the important mission of the Land Trust:

Serve our community by conserving high-quality

properties through a strategic, pragmatic, and

collaborative process.

Protect our conserved lands by partnering with

landowners to maintain and enhance conservation

attributes of the land and the public benefit

derived therefrom.

Bair Ranch - 2,794 Acres Conserved in 2004

Engage our community about the public benefits of

land conservation to further gain support for our mission.

Attract and retain outstanding staff, board members,

and volunteers to execute the strategic plan.

Continue to raise sufficient funding for annual

operations and enhance long-term organizational

sustainability.

EVLT pledges to conserve 20,000 acres by 2026

FOUR NEW CEs

6

In 2015 and 2016 Eagle Valley announced four new Conservation Easements

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), preservation and improvement of the Abrams Creek cutthroat trout population is one of the highest priorities for cutthroat conservation efforts in western Colorado.

“We are pleased to be part of such a unique land conservation project and are very thankful to Eagle County, the Tang family, the Town of Avon and the Eagle Valley Land Trust for their support to make this land purchase a reality.”

— Markian Feduschak, Executive Director, Walking Mountains Science Center

ABRAMS CREEK OPEN SPACE

In June 2016, EVLT facilitated a conservation easement for Abrams Creek in Eagle, in partnership with the Town of Eagle, Eagle County Open Space, and the Eagle Ranch Wildlife Committee. At 172 acres, Abrams Creek open space is an in-holding surrounded by Bureau of Land Management property and town of Eagle open space. Abrams Creek flows through it, and it serves as a public access point to the Hardscrabble Trail network on adjacent BLM and Eagle open space lands. It’s easily visible from most of Eagle and home to all kinds of elk, deer and other wildlife. By conserving this parcel, current efforts to reintroduce the endangered greenback cutthroat trout in the creek will be greatly assisted.

WALKING MOUNTAIN SCIENCE CENTER

COLLABORATION

EVLT, in collaboration with Walking Mountains Science Center, the Town of Avon, and Eagle County Open Space, facilitated the conservation of 100 acres of prime outdoor education and scenic open space. EVLT’s work resulted in Walking Mountains receiving upwards of $2.1M in funding for the project. Specifically, in return for donating the conservation easement to EVLT, Walking Mountains anticipates receiving as much as $1,047,500 in state tax credits. Additionally, EVLT received a $1.05M grant from Eagle County Open Space to assist Walking Mountains with the overall acquisition of the land and conservation easement donation.

In 2014, American Rivers named the Upper Colorado River Basin among America’s Most Endangered Rivers®. “The perpetual conservation easement ensures that development will never encroach on this scenic stretch of river and will provide a buffer to the river, as well protect current agricultural uses and associated water rights for the property.”

– Fay Augustin, American Rivers Associate Director, Colorado River Basin Program

“On a landscape scale, the position of the conservation easement will protect the scenic value and natural, open character of lands around the communities of Edwards in the Eagle River Valley, and help maintain wildlife habitat and movement corridors from the potential effects of incompatible uses or inappropriate development in the future.”

– Dawn Reeder, Lead Biologist, Rare Earth Sciences

DEWEY PARK

In early November 2016, through collaboration and partnership with Eagle County Open Space, The Gates Family Foundation, and American Rivers, we celebrated EVLT's newest conservation easement, Dewey Park. This beautiful 38-acre property, with 6,000 feet of Colorado River, frontage is the scenic gateway to the Upper Colorado River. Not only visible from the Colorado River Road, it can also be seen from nearby public lands. Wildlife species such as bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, and songbirds rely on this undeveloped land for habitat. The river flows right through it and the perpetual conservation easement ensures that development will never encroach on this scenic stretch of river.

CORDILLERA RIDGELINE

This exciting ridgeline preservation project overlooking Edwards and the Lake Creek valley occurred in December 2015, in a collaboration between the U.S. Forest Service and Eagle County’s Open Space Department. At 167 acres, this project will save vistas, views and landscapes in the Lake Creek valley, and many populated places in our community from Wildridge to Edwards.

The third-largest elk herd in the region lives and migrates in and around this pristine valley, and the conservation easement will preserve and enhance this special wildlife habitat for our beloved rocky mountain elk, while also protecting the amazing views.

“To hear people so connected to their land and the passion for what they do is special. Hard work and love make them successful. We all can learn.”

— Les Stern, Edwards, CO

“Everything was absolutely perfect. Hosts, staff and food were amazing. Already have two friends wanting to go. Keep me on the list!”

— Mike Gunter, Eagle, CO

RANCHING HERITAGE TOURS2015 marked the first year of our annual Ranching Heritage Tour, where EVLT facilitates a tour of two iconic ranch properties in the region, allowing participants to hear from ranchers and admire firsthand the landscapes and cultural heritage that surround us.

There are fewer working ranches in Eagle County each

decade because of population growth, development pressure, and the long hours and hard physical labor ranching requires. As society increasingly desires locally produced food and fiber products, the ranching families that remain in operation today are an inspiration. The goals of the tour are to foster support for, and a better understanding of ranching and its rich heritage in our great community.

EVENTS OVERVIEWFARM TO FORK

EVLT debuted its Farm to Fork, a Harvest Dinner, in 2016, an exclusive evening of local food, great wine, and music under the stars, held at a pristine valley meadow in the heart of Lake Creek valley.

The event, which will continue in 2017, educates guests about EVLT’s land conservation efforts to support our local ranchers and farmers, whose hard work ends up on your fork! Guests savored a gourmet dinner of food produced in our community and region from farms and ranches all with the personal stories of connection to the natural resources land provides. Special thanks goes to Kelly and Sam Bronfman for underwriting the event.

LEGACY FESTIVAL

EVLT held its first-ever Legacy Festival in 2015. Sponsored by Vail Resorts EpicPromise, The Legacy Festival offered an exciting silent auction, free family fun, and the famous Cow Patty Bingo, bringing the community together to celebrate our lands and all who work to protect them. Anchored by a conservation-themed expo open to all non-profits and

agencies with conservation of any kind in their programming, kids and adults alike enjoyed a conservation scavenger hunt which helped raise the profile of all these partners in conservation. Sponsored by Alpine Bank in 2016 is the valley’s only celebration dedicated to conservation.
