Mark MunshiExecutive Director

Message from Executive Director

I am very pleased to present this report with activities and brief achievements of CSS during the year 2013. The CSS team passed another year of hard work and team efforts with mammoth support and inspiration from Bangladesh Government, NGO Affairs Bureau (NGOAB), Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA), partners, donors, supporters and other stakeholders. This report illustrated the works and achievements of CSS projects and being the Executive Director I feel fortunate to be the part of these progressive outcomes of the organization. Here it is briefly viewed how we translate our values and believes into practice and how the works of CSS contribute to the lives of vast communities of people in target areas of Bangladesh.

Since its inception in 1972, by the honorable founder Rev. Paul Munshi, CSS has achieved different awards and visible outcomes of its activities which contribute to bringing positive change in the lives of many destitute people. The organization is implementing its activities under 4 major categories- Health, Education, Economic Development and Special Development Sectors taking

massive steps towards the accomplishment of addressing the prosperity and basic needs of the disadvantaged individuals and communities. Although the country experienced severe periods of political turmoil and subsequent unrest during 2013, the effective and efficient efforts of the organizational staff with full cooperation of community made many challenging issues achievable.

Health Sector offered different forms of support reaching 853,538 people providing preventive and curative health services through 200 bed Hospital, Rural Health Centers, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Rehabilitation Program, Urban Primary Health Care Service Delivery Project, Safe Motherhood Project and Health Alliance Bangladesh during the reporting year. The current nursing institute is an integral part of the Health Sector and attracts the growing interest of the government and donors.

Education Sector helped a total of 4694 students through Home of Blessings, Community Base Education Support Program, Leadership Training Program, Rev. Paul's High School, Hope Technical Institute, Hope Polytechnic Institute, Job and Business Service and Hope Non-formal Primary Schools. Specially the Hope Polytechnic Institute (HPTI) and Hope Technical Institute (HTI) accredited enthusiastic achievement. HTI received renewable membership of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) under which HTI has become a government accredited institute and the graduate students will be certificated by the Government. Both of the institutes are primarily selected for the "STEEP" program which will create opportunity for student scholarships and infrastructure development support for the institutes.

Economic Development Sector served a total of 218,736 people operating in 20 districts through Micro Credit Program, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, CSS Ava Center and Fisheries Project which resulted in systematic and lasting changes in the lives of many helpless, extremely poor and landless families. Considering program impact and community demands this year CSS has expanded its horizon establishing 20 new Micro Credit branches.

Special Development Sector is promoting rights and liberating human potentials connecting organization and beneficiaries in a broader development atmosphere implementing Empowering Women; Improving Country, Disaster Management and Emergency Relief, Strengthening Partners Network projects which are helping communities to protect themselves through empowerment and self-reliance.

CSS values working with Bangladesh Government, NGOAB, MRA, partners, donors, supporters and other stakeholders who is actively contributing to achieve impact of our works and lasting positive changes in the lives of millions of poor and extremely poor people.

I thank God for His continuous blessing to make us capable in carrying forward the tasks. I would also like to take the opportunity to extend my deep heartfelt gratitude to Bangladesh Government, NGOAB, MRA, partners, donors, supporters, other stakeholders and CSS staff for grounding the dream of our honorable founder to conquer the overwhelming effects of poverty.

In Bangladesh health as one of the fundamental human rights still remains relatively low level and is a big concern to the nation due to its dense population and huge number of rural population who are living below poverty line and struggling for social and economic security. According to World Bank report published in 2010 the poor health condition in Bangladesh is reflected by 3.35% investment of GDP and accordingly 7.9% of total government expenditure on healthcare issues. Nearly 70% of the village patients, who consults a healthcare provider for curative services, contacts a village doctor with little or no formal training. Therefore, access to basic health care and wider provision of dependable health services for all are still to achieve and are much challenging for Bangladesh.

Considering the fragile health situation of the region and to improve the overall health service for the people in southern part of Bangladesh, CSS has been implementing different project activities to provide affordable and sustainable doorstep health services to the poor underprivileged communities for last two decades. Working with government and other development partners, the Health Sector is contributing towards improving health status of the country offering quality health care service and reducing morbidity and mortality in the target areas. CSS is implementing Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital, Nursing Institute, Urban Primary Health Care Service Delivery Project (UPHCSDP), Affordable and Sustainable Health Care for Vulnerable People (ASHCVP), HIV/AIDS Prevention and Rehabilitation Program. In addition CSS is associated and contributing through two advocacy alliance platforms named "Health Monitoring and Advocacy on safe Motherhood" and "Health Alliance Bangladesh (HAB)".

Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital (RAWMH)

With a view to serving the poor and underprivileged communities with affordable and sustainable health care services, Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital was established in 1988 in the outskirts of Khulna district in Tilok, Rupsha. Since then this 200 bed hospital has been providing comprehensive medical services to the rural people of southern region. The hospital is located in the serene surroundings of countryside and is equipped with necessary secondary medical services and aids. There are General Unit, Eye Unit, Mother & Child Unit, Dental Unit, ENT unit and Orthopedics unit through which poor and needy people are getting service at affordable cost. It also provides diagnostic facilities for patients through X-ray Pathology, and Ultrasonography section. At present, there are 16 doctors and 24 nurses who are working with dedication and care. The hospital has been able to earn reputation from public because of its services and philanthropic outlook.

The hospital offers "Poor Fund" scheme for hardcore poor people under which they are getting medical services in reduction or even free of cost. Every year, it is planned to serve 15% of all patients under Poor Fund. The hospital also arranges medical camps round the year in remote areas to reach the rural people with its services.

This hospital is basically the center of CSS Health Sector and serves as one of the key secondary referral points of other health projects. In this year, the hospital is able to achieve 90% self-sufficiency and it is expected that the hospital will be fully self sustained in a very near future.

A Precious Dream

I am Runa Khatun. I am now a proud mother of a child. Like all women, I have a dream of a little happy family and one day my child would grow up and become an educated person in society. I started my conjugal life with this dream. My husband's name is Alamgir Shaikh who is a fisher man. He is very poor and his entire family lives on his earnings. He has to look after his old father and mother and maintain the whole family through lots of hardship and struggle. We live from hand to mouth and it is really tough for us to manage three meals a day if my husband doesn't go to the sea for fishing for one day. Yet, I was happy with my marital life and tried my best to help my husband by working in other houses as servant. But situation changed when I got pregnant after one year of marriage. We were very happy for our coming baby. During pregnancy, I started to become ill very often. I could not walk and felt an unbearable pain in my belly. We didn't have enough money to go to a doctor for his advice. My husband somehow borrowed some money and took me to a doctor. But when the doctor told that my baby was in complicated position and I had to go under cesarean delivery for giving birth of my child, we became helpless. It was no way possible for us to manage so much money together at that time. My husband tried all his means but could not get any hope. We were passing our days in deep depression and sadness. Then my husband came to know about CSS Hospital and took me there. In the hospital, I gave birth to a child through cesarean delivery. We got help from the poor fund of the hospital. We could not believe that everything was done with so much care but without any cost. It was absolute blessings of God for us. Now, my daughter is quite well and healthy. Whenever, I take my precious dream in my lap and she smiles, I remember those guys for whom everything has become possible and my heart fills with gratitude. I thank to God for our little daughter and also thank CSS hospital for making my dream come true.

Nursing Institute

Knowledgeable, competent, attitudinally prepared, articulated and well co-ordinated health care team is an important pre-requisite for effective health care services. A nurse in a health care team plays a pivotal role for smooth functioning of the team. Without the competent effort of a nurse, health care delivery is practically meaningless. So, for effective delivery of health care services in terms of preventive, promotional, rehabilitative and curative care, competent nurse in a health care team is very essential. But the present world is passing a critical period for want of adequate human resources in health sector. The scarcity of qualified health personnel, including nurses, is being highlighted as one of the biggest obstacles in achieving health system effectiveness. Bangladesh is not an exception to this existing scenario despite the significant progress in public health during recent years. Improvements to health services are desperately needed; especially there is still shortage of qualified health professionals. According to WHO, Bangladesh has a population-nurse ratio of 5000:1 and has been declared as one of the 58 crisis countries facing an acute Human Resources for Health (HRH) crisis.

Providing health services to remote rural areas has always been a challenge for CSS because of required number qualified health professionals. CSS Nursing Institute was established with a view to producing qualified nurses for its health projects as well as meeting the national need. The Institute is located within the CSS Hospital complex and is using the hospital resources for its purposes. There is a plan to build a separate infrastructure in the coming years. This Government accredited Nursing Institute is offering poor and meritorious students four year diploma courses. After the completion of nursing course from here, the graduates get the opportunity to work in CSS hospitals and other health projects.

The performance of nursing graduates is satisfactory and they are working in different organizations and hospitals. At present, among the nurses of RAWM Hospital, there are 17 nurses who graduated from this institute. This institute is so far able to produce 40 nos. qualified nurses under 5 batches.

My name is Munira Begum. I am very grateful to sister Arinda as she has done many things for me and my child. I am a housewife of a van puller living in Gowrambah village of Rampal, Bagerhat. I am the second wife of my husband. We have a large family of six members. My mother and father-in-laws are also living with us. We live from hand to mouth and somehow we manage our daily livings through great hardship. I had passed a very difficult time during the days of pregnancy. At that time, I was weak and could barely walk. One day, sister Arinda came to our house. She is a Community Health Worker of nearby Rural Health Center. Seeing my situation, she became very compassionate and told me that I was suffering from malnutrition. She also suggested some suitable diet for me and urged me to come to health center. She advised me to take regular checkup and have the delivery done from there. But my family member didn't take this positively. To them such kind of act was against the religion. But sister Arinda came again and again to our house and tried to convince my husband. So, one day my mother-in-law took me to the health center. After several visits to the RHCs, I became well. Then my family was fully convinced and agreed to send me to health center. I started visiting the center for regular health checkup. On March 5, 2013 Tuesday, I gave birth to a healthy child in Gowrambah health center. It was a day of great joy for me as well as for my entire family. I have forgotten all the pains and the hard times that I endured during my pregnancy. It is the pain worth having because of the joy of holding my baby in lap which is really special and heavenly. I will never forget the good deeds of sister Arinda and her RHC. I thank and pray for her from my heart.

HIV/AIDS Prevention and Rehabilitation Program

HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern around the globe. Bangladesh is considered as one of the most vulnerable countries to HIV/AIDS infection because of its cross-cultural and geographical setup.

Most of the people living in Bangladesh are not aware of this deadly epidemic. HIV/AIDS prevention program is mainly an awareness base program which provides people with knowledge of healthy life style and HIV/AIDS prevention through different awareness raising campaigns. It also provides curative medical services for STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) through Drop-in-Centers (DIC). At present, CSS has 7 DICs through which this prevention program is being implemented. The target group of the program includes transport workers, brothel base sex workers, floating sex workers, female shrimp workers and the students. In 2013, one DIC is established with new target group of female shrimp workers. A total of 40,715 people were reached with prevention messages and 9,538 people received clinical care through DICs.

Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) Rehabilitation Program is a part of HIV/AIDS Prevention Program which focuses on rehabilitating the brothel base sex workers to the mainstreaming as they are the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection. The main objective of this project is to redecorate the life of the CSWs and reintegrate them to the mainstreaming of society. This program takes out selected CSWs from the brothels and provides them residential training on different life skills. These rehabilitated women are provided with job support. They also get land and house for their residence. Through this intervention CSS is able to rehabilitate 37 CSWs. These rehabilitated women are now involved in different jobs and leading their lives in the society with new hopes.

A New Life

My name is Salaha Begum. I am now thirty four years old. My father name is Mubarak sheikh and my mother name is Shukuron begum. We lived in Gilatala of Narail. We were a family of eight members then. When I was only three, my mother lost her mental balance and was missing from our house. Just after two years my father died also. Then we passed a life full of extreme struggle and difficulties. My elder brother looked after the whole family. But after the marriage of my brother, we were in a deep trouble. My sister-in-law could not accept us and often misbehaved with us. So I started working as a maid servant in neighbor's house in my early age. I passed three years there. But one day, my lord Ms. Jharna sold me to a brothel and compelled me to take sex worker profession. I cried and protested but all were in vein and that was the beginning of my miserable life. As I had a fair appearance I got a good demand there. But being demanding in the brothel, didn't give me anything rather I had to face a lot of humiliation. I was tortured and manhandled very often. The brothel owner pushed me to my limit for his gain. I passed near about twelve years in brothel with broken heart and shattered dreams. When I was in Fultala brothel, I heard about CSS HIV/AIDS Rehabilitation Program. I met some of the guys of the program who were visiting the brothel. They gave us hope of a better life. I was encouraged and expressed my desire to return to normal life. Then they took me to a training center. After finishing basic rehabilitation training there,I got a permanent job in CSS hospital as an ayah (cleaner). I am now doing this job. Recently I got married to Md. Shehabuddin who is a disable person. I and my husband recently moved to a new house which I got from this Rehabilitation program.

Now I am leading a life that I was always dreaming of. It is beyond my imagination that I could lead a normal life again. It is a fairytale for me. I endured a lot of pain and loss in my life. I thank to God for making all things possible in my life. I pray to God that He might help all the women in brothel as He has done for me.

Urban Primary Health Care Services Delivery Project (UPHCSDP)

This year, CSS has started a new health project named Urban Primary Health Care Services Delivery Project. This project has been implemented in the target areas with collaboration of Government. The Local Government Division (LGD) of the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives (MOLGRD&C) is the executing agency and the city corporations and municipalities in the project area are the implementing agencies with partnership of NGOs and service providers. CSS as one of its implementing bodies is implementing the project activities in Sirajganj and Gopalganj under 3rd phase of this project. The goal of the project is "To improve the health status of the urban population, especially the poor, through improved access to and utilization of efficient, effective and sustainable Primary Health Care (PHC) Services". The project's overall objective is to improve the health of the urban poor by improving access and changing the way in which health services are provided in Gopalganj and Sirajganj Municipality of Bangladesh. The project is designed to contribute in the objective of government's Poverty Reduction Strategy and it is in line with the aims of the HNPSP and ADB's Country Strategy for Bangladesh. The project intervene with two major components; (a) Promotion of health care through outreach program and (b) Curative services from static clinics/ satellite clinics with one Comprehensive Reproductive Health Care Center which is basically center for Maternity Services with more technically skilled team members and infrastructural facilities.

In recent years, there has been significant improvement in the rural public health due to different GO/NGO interventions and their wide spread coverage. But in urban areas, health services for poor people have always been a challenge because of costly living standard and high medical expenses. Though there are many hospitals and clinics in urban areas, the poor people can not afford those services. The UPHCSD project is for this people offering the primary health care services within their affordability.

Heavenly Gift

My name is Nargis Begum; age 35. My husband is Badsha Hawlader who is a day labor. We are living in the slum of Gopalganj ward-2. Like other slum dwellers we are passing our days in poverty. We do not give too much attention to our health and hygiene as it is quite hard for us to afford here. Beside my husband, I also used to do some activities as cleaner in other's houses. Because of all these, my pregnancy was belated a bit. But at the age of mid thirty when I was pregnant, I was passing my days in several health complications. My husband was totally indifferent to this matter. I felt the urge in myself to consult with a doctor in this regard. But I didn't have enough money and scope for this purpose. Then I came to know that Urban Primary Health Care Services Delivery (UPHCSD) Project is providing services to the mothers like me. I went there and started to get health check up and other services. I took four time medical checkup during my pregnancy from Primary Health Care Center-2 and they also provided me with necessary medicines. As my case was of aged pregnancy and I had some complication during pregnancy, the doctor advised for cesarean operation for delivery. It was not possible for us to go to any hospitals for this service as they were demanding huge money for delivery case. At that time, I was fortunate that one of CSS staff took me to the CRHCC of the project and managed everything from there. There I gave birth to a beautiful daughter through cesarean section. The delivery was conducted safely. I had to stay there for seven days. They took a great care of us. Now, both I and my baby are in good health. I am very grateful for the services that I got from UPHCSD project. My new baby has brought smile in our family and when she smiles my heart fills with joy. I pray to God so that He will protect my daughter all the time.

Health Monitoring and Advocacy on Safe Motherhood

CSS has become an active partner of an advocacy platform namely the BOOM Platform formed with the partnerships of 4 Dutch and 5 Bangladeshi NGOs. Under this platform CSS along with other member NGOs has been carrying out an advocacy program "Health Monitoring and Advocacy on Safe Motherhood" in five unions of the country.

In Bangladesh the issues relating to safe motherhood are not properly responded in the rural areas due to lack of governance, capacity and quality of services by GO and NGO service providers. The weak policy and its application in service provision and institutional management has become a challenge to quality health services, particularly mother and child health care. The BOOM Platform advocacy program has been trying to stimulate the government in this regard. The focus of the program is to make the Union Parishad Health Standing Committee (UPHSC) well functioning for enhancing safe motherhood and improve the performances of the public health service providers.

CSS as the members of this platform implemented this program in Lokhpur union. This advocacy program phased out in June 2013 with a significant achievement towards its goal and objective. At present, the UPHSC of Lokhpur union of Fakirhat is fully functional. This year regular monthly meetings have been conducted with the assistance of project staff in the target area and the committee members also participated in project activities time to time i.e. monitoring of service providers activities, meeting with CBO, observance of international days, mass awareness programs, organize workshop for different service providers etc.

Health Alliance Bangladesh

CSS being the member of national level Health Alliance has been performing its activities since 2011. The four HAB partners: Centre for Disability in Development (CDD), Child Sight Foundation (CSF), Christian Service Society (CSS) and The Leprosy Mission International Bangladesh (TLMIB) have a long attachment and commitment to development of the health sector in Bangladesh. HAB partners mainly focus on their activities in rural areas, where health facilities are limited or not exist. The ultimate target groups of HAB partners are those who are most vulnerable with leprosy, disability, HIV/AIDS and Safe motherhood. The main activities of the program include joint reflective learning and sharing of best practices, mobilizing and pooling resources, as well as lobby and advocacy. By sharing expertise with partners and coordinating various aspects of the work, HAB members are increasing their individual effectiveness. HAB is also creating a platform from where partners are raising a common voice in order to influence the policy-making process to improve the overall level of health services in Bangladesh. In this year, HAB partners are providing basic and specialized healthcare services for the marginalized population in Bangladesh in their respective fields. Different Civil Society development activities have been carried out by the project. Policy Influence (PI) is one of the main focused activities of the alliance under which a joint advocacy strategy has been developed in this year. The alliance also conducted national level advocacy on healthcare for everyone for policy influence.

Education SectorEducation SectorEducation Sector

Bangladesh has made significant progress in human resource development since independence, particularly after transition to democratic rule in 1991 but limited access of the poor to quality education and upper end of the job market exacerbates the existing inequalities that are passed on to future generations. Education is the foundation of any nation that creates awareness, regenerates ways of thinking, self empowerment, financial stability, dignity of life, growth in personal aspiration and ultimate improvement of livelihood condition as a whole.

Basic and especially technical education is utmost necessary for qualitative human resource development, to enhance industrial productivity and as a whole to improve the quality of life. Considering the importance of education and limited access of the poor to quality education, since 1981 CSS has been taking rigorous initiatives to ensure quality, practical-need based education for all regardless of their religion, race, ideology with special emphasis to the disadvantaged communities. In the meantime, CSS Education Sector has become one of the pioneers in basic and technical education among NGOs in southern part of Bangladesh. CSS is implementing a number of planned, dedicated project covering non-formal, formal and technical education such as: Home of Blessings (orphanage), Community Base Education Support Program, Leadership Training Program, Hope Technical Institute. Hope Polytechnic Institute, Jobs and Business Service, Rev. Paul's High School and Hope Non-formal Pre-primary Schools.

Home of Blessings (HoB)

Home of Blessings program is the central of CSS Education Sector which is basically orphanage care for destitute children of Christian community. The Christians constitutes only .3 million of entire population and being the minor, the poor and orphan Christian children are leading their lives in a vulnerable and disadvantaged situation deprived of the basic rights of nutritious food, clothing, proper environment, education and Medical care. So, for the wellbeing of this neglected community, Home of Blessings was established in 1981. The honorable founder of CSS, Rev. Paul Munshi had a long cherished desire to do something for the orphans and Home of Blessings is the successful manifestation of his solemn desire.

Home of Blessings takes the orphan children in and gives them a home, a family, food, clothing, healthcare, education and more. The children are provided with all basic necessities with special focus to formal education. The services provided in the HoB are planned and designed as per the needs of the children. There is a congenial environment for the children, which fosters their physical, psychological and spiritual growth as followers of Christ. The children are brought up with constant care and support by a bunch of dedicated staff who look after the children round the clock. There are Matron, Masi (Female Caretaker) who are supporting and nurturing these children with affection and dedication. Previously, both boys and girls were supported through this program but in 2013, the boys' portion is shifted to community

keeping the girls in HoB. At present, CSS have been operating four (4) Home of Blessings in Khulna, Gazipur, Batiaghata and Dacope where 982 orphan children are being brought up with parental love and care.

My name is Banani Gyin. I started my life at Home of Blessings from Nursery class since 2006. My father went away to India before my birth. He got married in India again. I came to this world in a tragic time of my mother's life. When my father left us, he sold all things of our house and took away everything from us. Even, he sold the land of our house. We were homeless and destitute then. I was born among all these sufferings and pains. My mother took shelter in my maternal uncle's house. We are four sisters. My mother was helpless with us and was looking for a job desperately to sustain our family. She even worked for others as a daily laborer. She passed her days with us in extreme poverty and hunger. My two sisters got married with the help of village people. My mother heard about CSS Home of Blessings and sent me here. This Home is really a blessing for me because after coming to this Home, my family situation began to change.

My mother worked hard and bought a piece of small land. My mother built a tiny house on that land. Because of extreme hard work day after day, my mother become feeble and now she is suffering from heart disease. I have another sister living with my mother but she is not of sound health. Once she had gone to a hostel but was sent back to home because of her sickness.

I want to be a police officer. I want to help my family. I would like to see my mother happy and want my younger sister to be well and healthy again. I also want to serve the country and society. So I am reading attentively with a hope that I will fulfill my aim in life. Now I am reading in class seven. I am grateful to CSS for this great opportunity of my life that I can continue my study here. I have received the blessings from God through CSS. I will try my best so that this love will not go in vein and want to give my gratitude by dedicating myself for this society, country and world.

Pursuit of Happiness

Community Base Education Support Program (CBESP)

CBESP is another major part of CSS Education Sector which has been implemented in parallel to Home of Blessings. The target group of this community base program is same as the Home of Blessings which is poor and orphan Christian children of the community. CBESP has the same motto and vision i.e. holistic development of the Children with especial focus to formal education. CSS always envisages in reaching and supporting its target group in a more comprehensive way. From this view point, CBESP started its journey since 2011 focusing on community level keeping the supported children in their own families. Children are now growing up in family environment with close attachment of their family members. This attempt is for making the Guardians of those children to be responsible for every care of their own children. The program continues its support to the children's family.

In Community, the program is responsible for ensuring every child's Christian identity and supports that the children need for their development. The schooling of the children is overseen by the program by admitting them to local schools. The necessary supports (food, Clothing, Medical Support etc.) are provided through quarterly Church gathering where the guardians and the children participate. Every child is attached to local Churches for their Christian education. The program ensures all these things through regular and extensive field monitoring and local CBO formation with local guardians and Church Pastors.

At first, the plan was to shift the entire Home of Blessings to community gradually. Later, it was decided that only the boys' student would be shifted to community and the girls would remain in Home of Blessings as the girl are more vulnerable to various socio-cultural abuse than the boys. This year, 475 children are supported in the Community Base Education Support Program.

Leadership Training Program (LTP)

CSS believes that to build up a peaceful and harmonized community, it is essential to have good leaders who will guide and lead the community. Leadership Training Program is a response to shortage of community leaders in the Christian society of Bangladesh. The program is designed to bring out the best in tomorrow's leaders. It helps the poor, needy and meritorious young Christian girls and boys with formal and spiritual education and gives them the opportunity to become real Children of God for serving His kingdom. Actually, LTP is a chain program of Home of Blessings (HoB) and Community Base Education Support Program (CBESP). In the HoB and CBESP the students are provided support for their education till secondary level and then the students of higher education are enrolled in LTP. Besides, it also takes outside Christian students from all over the country. Under this program the students get financial assistance (stipend) to continue their education. The program also looks after the spiritual development of these children through various local activities like arranging cell group gathering, revival seminars.

This year, two (2) seminars are held with the participation of all students for spiritual and moral trainings. The first seminar (Summer School) is held on June 5 to 18 and the second seminar (Winter School) is on December 7 to 20, 2013. 80 nos. of cell group gatherings are organized in local areas . A total number of 395 students are assisted by the program. Through these kinds of activities, the students are provided with biblical teaching and motivation to lead their live according to the norms of the Holy Bible and thus become a Leader in the community.

A Solemn Promise

I have never seen my father because he died on the year I was born. I was brought up in extreme want and without care. We are two sisters in our family. My mother was all the time worried about our future. So she got me admitted to Home of Blessings when I was a little child. I spent my childhood in Home of Blessings. I got my formal education from there. I stayed in Home of Blessings till the completion of my secondary education. HoB provided me everything and took a great care of me. Presently I am a student of Leadership Training Program. Had I not come to Home of Blessings, it would have not been possible for me to lead my life this way.

My name is Kakoli Baroi. My father's name is Haran Baroi and my mother's name is Mary Baroi. My sister name is Shefali Baroi and she is 21 years old. She is reading in the first year of BBS (Bachelor of Business Study). We are living in a Christian colony of Rupsha ctrand road. My mother is the guardian of our family. After my father's death my mother took all responsibilities to maintain the family. When I completed my secondary education from Home of Blessings, I and my mother had no way to continue my education. But I always had a dream to complete my higher education. Then Leadership Training Program came to help us. Now I am reading in Masters in Management. It is the first year of my master course. The stipend that I get from LTP is enough to support my educational expenses. Besides, I also got leadership trainings, moral trainings from this program. I am also associated with local church and teach the young boys and girls of my community. A few days back I got a part time job. I am working in EDS (Economic Development Sector) of CSS as a loan officer. Now, I can contribute to my family with my little income.

I am really grateful to my foster parents who are helping me through sponsorship program. Without their contribution, I am not able to come to the present position of my life. I love them and pray for them from my heart. I want to be established in my life and dedicated myself for the wellbeing of needy and poor people. I seek your prayers so that I will be able to fulfill my goal.

Hope Technical Institute (HTI)

Though manpower is considered as a potential resource of a country and essential for all development process, Bangladesh still lags behind having a large population essentially because of lack of skilled man power. Majority of the people in our country can neither complete their formal education nor get any kind of skill development trainings because of extreme poverty. Hope Technical Institute offers skill development trainings and technical education for the poor people by creating access to different skill based trades with affordable cost. It has been working for improved skills trainings and (self) employment opportunities and thus leading to more sustainable income and a better position in the labor market for the poor and vulnerable community. New Hope

I am Sonjoy Kumar Sarker now working in Hope Technical Institute as a shop assistant in Automobile Trade. I teach the students practical work in this trade. After completing my training successfully from HTI-Automobile Trade, I joined here. Here I am getting good salary and I am very much happy with my work. I could not complete my formal education due to financial problem.

I was born in a poor family of a village of Bagerhat district. My father name is Sunil Kumar Sarker and my mother name is Sunitra Sarker. We are 3 brothers and 1 sister. I completed my secondary education in 1992 with good marks. But due to poverty I could not bear the expenses of higher study. I started farming work in my village to support my family. I worked very hard but could not earn enough. I was looking for an opportunity to do something which would help realizing my dreams. My relative advised me to get technical training in any vocational institute so that I could be a skilled technical hand and have a job. Till then I was looking for such opportunity and I came to know about Hope Technical Institute (HTI) of Khulna. So, I came to Khulna and got admitted to HTI as a residential student of Automobile Trade after a long study break. I was very attentive in practical and theoretical classes and I worked hard to complete my technical training.

In 2012-13 session, I completed my course successfully. After graduation I got registration in JBS. JBS helped me to get my present Job in HTI. All the time, I have a desire to continue my study and learn more. I hope I will prosper in my life and for that I am ready to toil much. I am very grateful to HTI and JBS for giving me the chance to tread my life in a better way. I request everybody to pray for me.

Hope Non-formal Pre-primary Schools (HNFPS)

Hope Non-formal Pre-primary schools is another intervention to create general people access to education. CSS is currently operating thirty one (31) non-formal primary schools around the country. These schools are basically bridging the community children with formal education. Most of poor families are indifferent to their children's education because of the ignorance and lack of awareness. These non-formal schools introduce formal education to poor parents and provide pre-primary education for their children. Later as follow-up, these schools also ensure primary education for the children by admitting them to formal educational institutions/ schools.

It is a unique segment of Education Sector as these schools are related with Micro Credit Program and located in 31 different places in the working areas of microcredit. The target group of these schools is children of the beneficiaries of Micro Credit Program. This program has been initiated from the CSS' concept of comprehensive family approach. The rural poor women are supported by the Micro Credit program and their children schooling is ensured by these schools. The operating cost of the schools is covered from loan service charges of Micro Credit Program paid by the mothers of the children. Besides, the schools also conducts awareness session for the mothers where they are imparted knowledge on hygiene, health living style, children education etc. At present, there are 917 students reading in these schools.

Despite political instability, since 1996 in real terms Bangladesh's economy has grown 5.8% per year. More than half of GDP is generated through the service sector and 45% of Bangladeshis are employed in agriculture sector with rice as the single-most-important product. In most places economic development happens largely due to domestic efforts. Bangladesh's future success will depend largely on the quality and quantity of such efforts to meet the emerging challenges. For sustainable socio economic development as well as improved livelihood of vast population in target areas, CSS has been implementing different activities in align with national efforts since 1972 for women empowerment, safe water and sanitation, quality education and affordable quality health services.

Under Economic Development Sector (EDS) CSS is implementing Micro Credit Program, Small and Medium Enterprise Development and Fisheries project. Additionally to meet the growing demand of modern training centre to conduct different training, workshop and seminars in the region under this sector, CSS established and is operating a multi- storied well designed and equipped training centre named CSS Ava centre. The centre was named after Ms. Ava Munshi, wife of founder chairman Rev. Paul Munshi. In the meantime, CSS Ava center has become a model in the region for its continuous and remarkable contribution in skill Human Resource Development issues.

Micro Credit Program (MCP)

Micro Credit Program is the biggest and oldest intervention of CSS. In the year of 1972 when CSS started its journey, Rev. Paul Munshi introduced credit facilities for poverty stricken people of Bajua, Dacope with a view to uplifting their lives. Since then Microcredit program started its intervention and now it is operating around the country covering 20 districts. It has now 132 branches through which CSS is able to touch the lives of millions of poor people in bringing positive changes into their lives. Under this program, CSS has been providing loans to the poor and destitute people with easy terms and conditions. The primary target group of this program is the rural and underprivileged woman. In the rural areas, the women are so deprived and poor that they cannot have any access to any financial institution for any credit facilities. MCP is creating access for these women to credit option so that they can do some income generating activities. This program besides providing loans also provides regular motivation and guidance to its beneficiary for utilizing loan money. It also focuses on the betterment of other aspects of these women. The field officers regularly conduct group meetings where the knowledge of healthy living style, sanitation and hygiene, HIV/AIDS, children's education are imparted to the women. Field officer constantly motivates and encourages the women to put the knowledge into practice in their lives. There are 31 Hope Non-formal schools of CSS where the children of beneficiaries are getting non-formal education. The program has a wide range of loan facilities including General loan, Business Loan, seasonal loan on agriculture and fisheries, interest free loan etc.

A Self-reliant Woman

I am Nazma Begum living in Arambag of SonaDanga, Khulna. My village house is in Satkhira. I had a very painful time in early life of my marriage. My husband abandoned me when I gave birth to my son. At that time I was totally hopeless and alone. I took shelter in my brother's house. I and my son lived there like refuges. We lived on the leftover of their foods wearing torn cloths. I was desperately searching for doing something to survive with my son. One of my relatives advised me to do some income generating activities. But I had no such skill. Through much hardship, I managed to get training on tailoring. I knew about CSS MCP and about the loaning activities for woman like me. I became their member and took a loan of BDT. 10000. I bought a sewing machine and started tailoring living in home. I was able to earn for my family and I got enough customers to serve. So, I again took another loan of BDT. 15000 and bought some sheet of cloths. I with my son moved to a house where I started my tailoring business in a full run. My son age was then thirteen years. With my income I was able to ensure his schooling. I was thinking of starting a separate tailoring shop. So I took a loan of BDT. 20000 and rented a shop. After starting my tailoring shop my income increased as I was able to accommodate more customers. Because of huge demand, I took another loan of BDT. 26,000 and bought another sewing machine. I employed a woman in my shop who now helps me in sewing. I am the master tailor and she is my assistant. I give her salary of BDT. 2500 every month. Later, for fifth time I took a loan of BDT. 30000 for buying another sewing machine and employed another assistant. Now, I have a good income every month and everybody in community respects me for my achievement. At present, I with my two assistant is providing training on tailoring to four women. I have started a cosmetic shop beside the tailoring business and my son is now looking after this shop. I want my son to be well established in life. I passed many tough times in my life but I never lost my hope and tried hard through much toil and sweat. Since 2007, CSS has been beside me in my journey providing necessary assistance and guidance. I am really thankful to them for their contribution in my life.

Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED)

SME concept is quite popular in Bangladesh. CSS always follows the chain approach to ensure comprehensive development of its target community. Small and Medium Enterprise Development is the chain project of CSS MCP and was introduced to encourage new entrepreneurship development in the rural areas with a goal of alleviating poverty. New enterprises create job opportunities for unemployed people and thus contribute to poverty alleviation process. SMED mainly provides loans to those successful businessmen who are the former beneficiary of MCP. It also assists potential entrepreneurs of urban areas who have a possibility of business expansion. Besides giving loans the program also provides the clients with many business development services i.e. accounting system, staff management etc. Under SMED, CSS offers three types of loan products to its clients.

SMED (Small) Loans range from BDT. 50,000-BDT. 200,000. The loan is given to the new businessmen who just have started the business in the market and due to the lack of capital cannot establish their businesses. The duration of the repayments of the loan is one year. A total number of 838 businessmen are supported by SMED (Small) loans this year. So far, the total number of beneficiaries is 45,500 and there are 6,917 number of jobs creation under SMED (Small). Under SMED (Large) loan category, a considerable sum of money is provided to business people as loans ranging from BDT. 200,000-BDT. 2,000,000. These loans are provided to those people who have an established business in the market and want to expand the business more. The loan year is five years. So far the total number of beneficiaries of SMED (Large) is 75.

The third product of SMED is the loans provided under Water Bangladesh project. In the southern part of country, safe drinking water always has been an issue because of excessive salinity and presence of other minerals like Arsenic. Under Water Bangladesh, the entrepreneurs are not provided money as loan rather they are provided with water purification plants. The costing of these plants is considered as loans. The entrepreneur repays the loan by selling pure drinking water to local community in nominal price. It is one of unique projects of CSS as beside creating entrepreneurship, it also creates safe sources of pure drinking water for the locals. CSS provides long term technical and maintenance support to these plants. Through this project, CSS is able to establish 20 water plants in the rural areas.

Fisheries Project

CSS has been doing fish cultivation in its two fisheries project for many years. One fishery is located in Batiaghata and another is in Dacope beside Home of Blessing (orphanage) there. These Fisheries are creating some income by producing and selling good amount of fresh fishes. CSS has been operating some non-income generating projects and the income from these fisheries comes to a great help for those projects. These fisheries together have 25 fish cultivating ponds on 25.02 acres of land. Every year CSS is able to produce a good quantity of fishes as there are dedicated staffs to look after these fisheries and they are cultivating the fishes in a systematic way. Batiaghata and Dacope are the remotest southern part of Khulna and the people are living there with extreme struggle as the livelihood condition is very challenging because of adverse geographical condition. Local people have less income possibilities. Through these fisheries project CSS able to create some jobs for locals. Some rural entrepreneurs are also encouraged to do such kind of fish cultivation.

Empowering Women; Improving Country (EWIC)

CSS through all its projects and programs is serving the most disadvantaged and underprivileged portion of the community. Women are one of the major constituents of its target population. Woman folk in our country especially in rural areas are neglected because they are deprived of any resource endowment and due to their limited access to income possibilities. Empowering Women; Improving Country project is implementing its activities for the betterment of rural women through developing their skills for any income generating activities. Through Micro Credit Program, CSS has a long history of working with rural women. From its working experience, it is found that giving loan/credit to women has never been enough unless they are provided with any related skills or knowledge to utilize the money for any income generation. EWIC project focuses on skill development of the rural women before taking loan from any Micro Finance Institute (MFI). Every year, the project supports 1000 women providing skill development trainings to selected women and tagging them with different MFIs. This year, the second phase of the project ended in May with 1,019 women as beneficiary. In the month of August, the third phase started with another new 10 target areas. The target women are those rural women who are still out of any development activities. The trainings provided under this project are set as per the preferences of the women.

Disaster Management and Emergency Relief

Bangladesh is prone to various natural disasters like cyclones, floods, mud slides, and drought. The whimsical tropical climate and geographical location make the country vulnerable to recurring natural disasters. Now and then Bangladesh is hit by natural disasters like cyclone Sidr and Aila. The loss and casualties during natural disasters is immense and the people of coastal regions are the worst suffers. These people are very poor and lack the coping strategies to face the aftermath of such brute and colossal devastation. Disaster Management and Emergency Relief cell is for serving and helping those suffering humanity in post disaster situation. It is an emergency unit formed with volunteers from different projects and programs. Whenever any disaster strikes, the unit moves hurriedly to those places with necessary help and aids. CSS has a Disaster Management Policy in place and has also the experience to work in disaster rehabilitation activities.

Fortunately, there is no such occurrence of disasters in this year. At end of the year, people were suffering a lot in extreme cold due to cold wave for couple of weeks. People living in the street and slum passed their days in shivering cold. CSS through its own initiatives has launched warm cloths distribution drive. CSS staff distributed the blanket and warm clothes at night in slums and streets. Besides, blankets were also provided to the poor people from CSS head office.

Strengthening Partners Network (SPN)

From 2012, CSS started SPN project with the goal of organizational capacity development. The main focus of this project is the institutional development of the whole organization including all its projects and programs by strengthening the elements which are related to intervention strategies i.e. "Civil Society Strengthening" and "Policy Influencing". It concerns with defining an overall strategic position for the organization and enriching it through necessary capacity building. CSS as a development organization has been serving its target communities primarily focusing on "Service Delivery". But with the change of development strategy and context, there is an imminent need to shift towards "Civil Society Strengthening" and "Policy Influencing". To facilitate this transition, SPN project aims at developing human resources and organizational core capabilities. SPN project activities have been designed as per the 5C model of Core Capabilities.

In this year, different capacity building trainings for the staff have been conducted under SPN. Besides, CSS established four specialized work teams i.e. Fundraising Unit, Advocacy Unit, Project follow-up team and Documentation Cell. CSS had a limited exposure and experience in fundraising and advocacy. So, emphasis has been given to enhance organizational capacity in this regard. Presently, there are functional units for fundraising and advocacy. Through Fundraising Unit, CSS is trying to raise funds for its projects and programs from different institutional donors. The Advocacy Unit will carry out advocacy initiatives separately as an individual project. The Project Follow-up team has been formed with a plan to keep track of projects impact and sustainability after project phase-out. It will help to improve organizational capacity to deliver result. The Documentation Cell will be responsible for knowledge management of the entire organization. In November Woord en Daad, one of the partners of CSS, facilitated a workshop for CSS staff to comprehend the 5C Model and envisage future intervention of SPN project.
