Who we are

Annual review 2018 • uwl.ac.uk • University of West London

The origins of the University of West London date back over 150 years to 1860 when an educational institution was first opened at the Ealing site. Today, the University is a thriving institution whose core aims are to inspire students to become creative professionals and to connect them to exciting and rewarding careers.

Based in the heart of one of the UK’s most successful business regions, the University has a wealth of experience in a number of disciplines and strong connections with key industries.

1860The Byron House School was founded, later known as Ealing Technical College and School of Art, and later Ealing College of Higher Education.

1991Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, London College of Music and Queen Charlotte’s College of Health Studies merged in 1991 to form the Polytechnic of West London.

1992The polytechnic becomes the Thames Valley University after being granted university status by royal assent.

1994The University merges with Northwick Park School of Nursing, Riverside College of Nursing and the North West Thames Regional Health Authority’s AIDS unit.

1995The University merges with Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery.

2004The University merges with Reading College and Ealing School of Art and Design.

2011In April, we’re formally renamed the University of West London to reflect our new focus on the Ealing and Brentford sites. In May, Laurence Geller (a leading figure in the tourism and hospitality industry) is appointed Chancellor.

2015The Ealing campus undergoes a £50m+ transformation. Now it has new social areas, library, students’ union, auditorium, gym, restaurants and cafés, studios for the student radio station, music and dance students, and teaching spaces.

2016We buy the Brentford site (Paragon) giving us flexibility to grow and thrive.

2017We invest over £1m in the development of the Paragon Annex studios and open a state-of-the-art nursing Simulation Centre at Reading.

The Higher Education sector has always faced challenges, however, in recent years issues of funding, quality and access have been at the top of the agenda for most institutions. Currently a fee review is ongoing. Furthermore, the Brexit negotiations and other challenges that lie ahead have created much uncertainty.

These challenges include inter alia:

• Intense competition for students and staff, particularly in London

• The known and unknown effects of our departure from the European Union

• Constrained public funding and probable reform of the current fee structure

• Increasing costs, unit of resource, and revenue problems

• An ever demanding and changing labour market requiring new knowledge and skills, and flexible working

• Increasing demands for greater accountability, transparency and value for money from students and the public

• Growing institutional scrutiny driven by the new regulator the Office for Students and the extension of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)

• Scarce and competitive research funding measured by the new Research Excellence Framework

• The rise of new technologies and the increasing power of social media

• Balancing infrastructure spend with student need.

Through the successful execution of our strategic plan, Ambition 2018, we are now well placed to face the challenges outlined above.

Our full-time undergraduate cohorts has grown this year, despite increased competition and demographic changes and we have demonstrated continual growth since 2015-16. Our postgraduate taught cohorts have increased year on year with a 15% increase in 2017-18. Our international student numbers have also grown to over 580 students. Degree apprenticeship enrolments have grown to 392. The University also continues to extend its global reach through transnational education and partnerships and we now have close to 2000 students studying UWL degrees at other institutions in the UK and overseas.

There are also a further 2,758 students who are studying for UWL validated awards at partner institutions across the UK

Widening participation

The University has an exemplary record in widening participation and social inclusion, extending the

reach of higher education to people who have traditionally been excluded from it. This is reflected in our inclusive culture which supports one

of the most diverse student populations in the UK as we actively reach out to under-represented groups at a local and national level.

In 2018, our outreach work won the HE Institution of the Year award in the NEON (National Education Opportunities Network) award for demonstrating significant commitment to

widening access to higher education through innovative outreach activities, senior management commitment, excellent careers provision and effective support for students.

Developing a demand-led portfolio

Based in the heart of one of the UK’s most successful business regions (west London), the University has a wealth of experience in a number of mainly vocational disciplines and powerful connections with key industries. Our course design and assessment practices are rigorous and strongly informed by industry partners. Our courses stretch and challenge students, with above average contact time delivered in small classes and taught by experienced and qualified professionals.

To ensure that our students are meeting the needs of the economy, the University mapped its portfolio against the needs of the London economy in order to deliver up to date and relevant courses.

Starting in 2015-16, our ‘Today’s Problems: Tomorrow’s Solutions’ strategy supported the successful launch of a number of new degree programmes which was built on in 2018 with the addition of further courses including: Social Media Marketing and Digital Marketing, and a Commercial Pilot degree with a pilot’s licence.

Apprenticeships

Building on the capability developed through long-standing catering and hospitality apprenticeships, 2017-18 saw a significant increase in degree and higher apprenticeship students with 392 registered and a total income of £1.04m, up 56% from 2016-17. New contracts have been secured with major employers such as Virgin Media, Thames Valley NHS Consortia, Sega, Pladis (United Biscuits), and McDonald’s. Degree Apprenticeships in Policing and Express Logistic Management have been developed and there are plans to expand the portfolio over the coming years.

Teaching and learning

UWL was awarded in 2017 a TEF silver which was an excellent result for the University.

The TEF panel made many positive and evidenced-based judgments about the University.. According to the panel the UWL submission demonstrated evidence of:

• A strategic approach to course design and assessment practices which employers value highly and which stretches, challenges and supports students.

• Embedded high quality peer mentoring and targeted financial support programmes to support student engagement.

• Investment in high quality physical and digital resources used by students to enhance

learning, with students fully involved in the strategic design of facilities in partnership with the University.

• Embedding developments from the forefront of research, scholarship or practice within academic programmes.

• The implementation of an institutional culture that facilitates, recognises and rewards excellent teaching across the University.

We are continually working on improvements in teaching and learning as we move to subject level TEF. The performance in relation to the nine subject areas is being monitored across the University and is focus for all Schools.

Library Services

Our Library Services received ‘Full Compliance’ through the framework of the Customer Service Excellence award. To support students in their studies, the University invested in almost 6,000 new books and e-books for the Library.

All new undergraduate students received a book bundle worth £100 through the Aspire scheme with John Smiths. All students received a further £200 to spend on books and other John Smiths products over two more years of study.

Students also received free black and white printing with significantly reduced rates for colour printing.

Student Services and Welfare Support

Student Services at UWL is an essential resource to help those experiencing difficulties or needing advice. We have invested in resource and infrastructure to expand the service and make it more visible.

As well as drop-in centres, Student Services lead in University wide campaigns to support students at critical times which have included: ‘Need Help, Just Ask’, ‘New Year, New Start’, ‘The Final Push’ and ‘Exam Prep and Stress Busting’.

At UWL we have developed a new policy framework with a raft of new interlinked policies designed to help students with mental health difficulties to complete their courses. Our student services staff have been trained in mental health first aid as well as workshops for students on how to ‘look after your mate’. These initiatives are part of an emerging Mental Health Strategy which the University is developing in conjunction with the Students’ Union.

A new wellbeing messaging service was launched in the summer of 2018. u@UWL is a free messaging service for first year students to help support students to make the transition to university. We have worked hard to identify what advice and support is most relevant to first year students and when they are most likely to need it.

Flight Pad

To support the development of our Commercial Pilots and Airline and Airport students the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism has introduced a state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 flight simulator.

Heathrow Achieves and Exhibition

The University received £79,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project to host and maintain Heathrow Airport’s historical archive.

The University has also received £100,000 from Heathrow Airport to become the home of the Heathrow Archive and Exhibition allowing UWL to be the focal point for academics, students, and the public interested

in finding out more about Heathrow’s fascinating past.

The items from the Archive are irreplaceable, dating back to the 1940s and include historical travel brochures, pamphlets, old uniforms, photographs and film footage. The Archive was originally held and displayed in Heathrow’s oldest passenger terminal, Terminal 2. Following the refurbishment of Terminal 2 in 2009, the Archive was moved to ensure it was preserved.

Heathrow’s fantastic contribution for the ‘Heathrow Archive and Exhibition’ will allow these invaluable items to be preserved for generations to come, and UWL is extremely excited to display what is undoubtedly a major part of recent British history.

Achievement 2023

Annual review 2018 • uwl.ac.uk • University of West London

In 2018, the Vice-Chancellor announced his new strategic plan for the University of West London.

This strategic plan offers a road map for the future direction of the University. It proposes a series of university-wide goals, a framework of commitments to help us make informed decisions as to how to achieve those goals, and a sequence of metrics to access progress against those goals. Crafting the new plan has been an extensive undertaking forming part of a continuum beginning with the first strategic plan published under our current Vice-Chancellor in 2008, Education that Works, through to Ambition 2018 introduced in 2013.

This new plan: Achievement 2023 is therefore constructed from a position of strength. It builds on the successes of the recent past while continuing to be true to our founding mission which is to give our students access to three transformative and fundamental rights: the right to enhancement, the right to inclusion, and the right to participation.

Our vision is simple and continues to define our University as an innovative, inclusive and meritocratic community committed to making the country more prosperous, open and just.

Gala celebrates 130 years of success at London College of Music

Music professionals, former students and staff members past and present enjoyed a sumptuous Gala Dinner to mark London College of Music’s (LCM) 130th anniversary.

The celebration, at the University’s campus site in Ealing, featured a three-course meal in UWL’s award-winning Pillars restaurant and live performances by current and former LCM students of jazz,

opera, musical theatre and piano.

Distinguished guests included honorary graduate John Cameron, the composer and arranger whose work includes the musical adaptation of the novel and film, Alfie. There was also a performance by opera singer John Treleaven in tribute to William Lloyd Webber, former Director of LCM. Treleaven sang a rousing version of Nessun Dorma – the aria made famous by Luciano Pavarotti as the theme tune of the 1990 World Cup.

UWL Oscar winners return to inspire next generation of talent

Two UWL graduates who worked on the Oscar-winning film ‘The Silent Child’ returned to the University where the pair discussed their contribution to making the award-winning film and the inspirational journey of the project.

Producer Rebecca Harris’ and assistant director Tom Turner’s success has been a great source of pride at the University, where they learnt the skills which set them on the road to the Academy Awards, earning them

the Best Live Action Short Film Award for their film that tells the story of a small deaf girl.

Rebecca, who studied BA Film Production at UWL’s London School of Film, Media and Design and graduated in 2013, and Tom had advice for the next generation of talent who are currently studying film production at UWL, highlighting the benefits of creating a high-quality final year project, the importance of film festivals as a means of publicity and the value of ‘being nice to everyone’ as a young professional seeking to enter the competitive industry.

£1 million gift from Laurence Geller accelerates pioneering work in the area of dementia care

The University of West London is delighted to announce an extremely generous £1 million donation from its Chancellor, Laurence Geller CBE, international philanthropist and founder of Innovative Aged Care, to establish a new Institute for Dementia Care (IDC).

The IDC will drive a ground-breaking, trans-disciplinary approach encompassing the arts, social sciences, food & nutrition and nursing to deliver both person-centred and carer-centred solutions that will effect

meaningful change and deliver life-improving outcomes.

A key IDC output will be a national training and accreditation scheme that aims to set professional standards, make recommendations and issue guidance for practitioners. It will have an applied focus, engaging in research that will deliver useful innovations including practical and behavioural ‘toolkits’ for use by both trained professionals and ‘lay’ carers of those living with dementia.

The announcement of the gift was made at the first annual Dementia Friendly London Summit at the GLA as part of Dementia Action Week (21-27 May 2018).

UWL scientist wins prize for ear defenders that protect workers

Dr Ying Zhang, senior lecturer in Computer Science at the University’s School of Computing and Engineering, has devised ear defenders which can dampen background noise, while amplifying important sounds such as speech and alarms or sirens.

The twin benefits of Dr Zhang’s design: amplifying significant sounds while simultaneously dampening noise which causes hearing damage or loss, propelled it to victory in an online poll by Farnell element14, a British electronic components

company which distributes components across the globe under the Premier Farnell parent brand. Powered by the Internet of Things (IoT), the technology promises to provide effective communication between co-workers and protect workers’ hearing without compromising on safety.

Members of Premier Farnell’s online community, element14 – which comprises half a million members – voted it the winner from three finalists selected by the company from all entries. The prize, £5,000 worth of parts and components to build and test, will be used in UWL’s Internet of Things projects.

UWL and Ealing Trailfinders continue successful partnership

We are delighted to sponsor Ealing Trailfinders RFC for a sixth consecutive season.

This continues a winning partnership which brings together two ambitious local institutions working hard for success in the fields of rugby and higher education.

This year, UWL has been ranked as one of the top 50 universities in the UK by the trusted and independent Guardian University Guide 2019, while Ealing Trailfinders is chasing promotion after winning rugby’s prestigious British and Irish Cup during the club’s best-ever campaign, last season.

The ongoing collaboration is good news for the local

community too. Engaging young people in sport and education are top priorities for both UWL and Ealing Trailfinders.

Hundreds of local schoolchildren have learnt new things by taking part in UWL’s Outreach scheme, which is dedicated to widening participation in higher education among traditionally under-represented groups. Trailfinders has appointed a community coach to join club players in visiting local schools to teach youngsters how to play rugby and stay fit and healthy.

Ben Ward, Director of Rugby at Trailfinders said: ‘UWL have been a fantastic supporter of the club and we are delighted to be working together for another year. Their local presence in the area makes them a great link with us and we look forward to another positive partnership.’

UWL helps inspire creativity in young people with return of Saturday Club

In September, we opened our doors again to the young people from across Ealing and neighbouring boroughs who want to pursue their passions in Art & Design and Technology & Engineering.

Running every Saturday for 20 weeks, Saturday Club consists of a mixture of practical workshops led by University staff, educational trips and master-classes from experts. The programme, aims to inspire young people aged 13 to 16 to build experiences to help them

pursue careers in the creative and STEM industries. UWL is taking part in the scheme for the third year running.

The project is run in collaboration with the Sorrell Foundation, an organisation that was set up nearly 20 years ago by renowned British designers John and Frances Sorrell, with the aim of inspiring creativity in young people. Since then, the Foundation has worked with more than 100,000 young people through a series of projects, including the National Saturday Club, a network of Saturday Clubs across the country.

UWL honored alumnus Freddie Mercury with spectacular artwork ahead of the film release

We celebrated our world famous alumnus, Freddie Mercury, in October by joining forces with outdoor media specialist Rapport, Twentieth Century Fox, Regency Enterprises and Global Street Art Agency to unveil a striking and highly visible mural of his image on our Paragon Building.

The epic mural has been hand-painted by world-renowned street art agency, Global Street Art and took just four days to complete. It remained in place throughout the month

of October on the Paragon building, and provided the perfect site for ultimate impact.

The installation coincided with the release of Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises’ long-awaited film, Bohemian Rhapsody. The film is a celebration of legendary British rock band Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer, Freddie Mercury.

Freddie earned a diploma in Art & Graphic Design at Ealing Art College, now the London School of Film, Media and Design at UWL. He would later go on to use his art skills to design the Queen heraldic arms.

Food Lab opens to drive innovation across the capital

A cutting-edge facility for new product development and innovation for food and drink businesses in the Greater London Area was officially opened at the University.

The West London Food Innovation Lab, a £1.5 million project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, offers London and Greater London start-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) advice and technical support crucial for new product development or product reformulation, providing a

range of laboratory services ranging from nutritional andevaluation.

More than 30 London-based small businesses have already benefitted from the head-start given to them by the expertise of the team, which is led by Professor Alexandros Paraskevas, Chair in Hospitality Management at the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism. The launch event showcased some of the companies whose products have already benefited from the lab’s services, including a rice-based dairy-free yoghurt, a crunchy-roasted cricket snack in three flavours, a range of cold-brew teas and a plant-based jerky.

Ealing student takeover at UWL

A student from The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls in Ealing took over the reins at the University as part of the annual Takeover Challenge Day.

Nina Juma, who is currently studying for her A-levels, took on a role in the University’s

Outreach Team for the day to gain a valuable insight about how the University reaches out to the local community.

Takeover Day provides young people with opportunities to experience real-life decision-making in the workplace, while organisations benefit from a fresh perspective on their work.

Research and scholarship are key elements of academic life for the University, informing and enhancing the curriculum, teaching and learning, and creating opportunities for staff and students

The 2018-20 Research and Scholarship strategy emphasises capacity-building in research, open access compliance, and enhancement and growth of our doctoral provision. It is focused on three key objectives:

• To achieve university-wide engagement in research and scholarship

• To connect research, scholarship and innovation to students and the curriculum

• To create a robust infrastructure for research and scholarship.

The University has invested almost £2m to enhance the research infrastructure. This has funded the appointment of 12 new Research Professors, all engaged with a specific applied research centre.

The University now boasts eight active research centres, all with an enhanced capacity to support the submission of research and consultancy bids; growth in doctoral students; increase in publications; and specific work to improve the research environment across the institution.

The areas of research covered by the centres are:

1. Music and screen – PRISM

2. Cybersecurity and criminology

3. Learning in the platform economy – LeaP

4. Person-centred health and social care

5. The Richard Wells Centre

6. The Faringdon Centre for non-invasive testing

7. International migration

8. International Centre for Hospitality and Aviation Resilience Management –ICHARM.
