On Programmes related to the Major Concern of having ‘a better school environment’
-P.23-
Introduction
In the current academic year of 2003-2004, there are mainly two programmes which are organized by Conservancy Club, in collaboration
with the Civic Education Committee, Moral Education Committee, Geography Club, Gardening Club and Art Club. The first one is called ‘ To Make
the School Green Programme’, and the second one is called ‘School Environmental Award Scheme cum Student Environmental Protection Ambassador
Scheme 2003/2004’. Both activities are aimed at having a better school environment by different means.
I) ‘To Make the School Green Programme’
The programme is being organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in order to help school provide a ‘green’ environment
for students and teachers. Details are as follows:
i) First, our school has been granted a total amount of $5800 as a subsidy to make our school green as well as to bring the message of a ‘green’
school to our students as well as teachers.
ii) Then, the total grant will be used for three different activities: A subtotal of $2000 will be used for buying some pots of different flowers.
Another subtotal of $1800 will be used for growing some other flowers in soils inside a small garden. Activities related to assimilating the
message of the importance of a ‘green school’ will be organized for our F.1 students in the First Term.
iii) Finally, the record of all the activities mentioned above will be kept in an A4 Folder so as to provide relevant information for an inter-school
competition entitled ‘Green School Project Award’ to be held in December 2003.
II) Schools Environmental Award Scheme cum Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme 2003/2004
The two schemes are jointly organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee(ECC) and Education and Manpower Bureau. The
aims of the schemes are to get student involvement and subsequently to develop in them a sense of responsibility towards the environment and their
leadership, and encourage them to take positive action in improving the environment.
Details are as follows:
i) First, the Schools Environmental Award Scheme(SEAS) is to encourage all participating schools to join in all environmental activities organized
by EEC and receive environmental materials and teaching aids from ECC. To fulfil this requirement, our school will have to organize
-P.24-
school-based and action-oriented activities in support of environmental protection or participate in related activities organized by ECC,
government departments, non-government organizations and green groups.
ii) In this academic year i.e. 2003-2004, the main themes of environmental activities will be related to ‘Clean Air’, ‘Nature Conservation’, ‘Reduce
Waste’ and ‘Protect our Water Resources’.
iii) Second, the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme(SEPAS) will be closely related to the SEAS in that students appointed
Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors will have to actively involve themselves in helping teachers to organize activities under the
SEAS.
iv) In this academic year, our school will have about 20 students appointed as Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors, with their tenure for
one year. They are encouraged to:
◆ think globally and act locally;
◆ be aware of environmental issues in Hong Kong;
◆ take part in environmental protection activities organized by different groups;
◆ plan, organize and implement environmental protection projects in schools; and
◆ set good examples to promote sustainable development through their own initiatives and actions.
In fact, each SEPA will be issued a log book which includes a Certificate of Appointment. Each of the SEPAs will have to record in the log
book the details of his/her involvement in the environmental activities in which he/she has organized.
v) By joining the two schemes mentioned above, our school will be able to receive a grant of $1000 for organizing different environmental
protection activities. In May 2004, our school and our students can then apply for the awards for school and student respectively if we can meet
all the basic requirements e.g. School Merit Award, SEPA Merit Award, etc.
Overview
The two programmes mentioned above are not just of one year duration. They may become long-term programmes for the next few years in
order to popularize the message of ‘green’ as well as ‘environmental protection’ not just within but outside the school. This is in view with the need to
build up a ‘mission’ for our students in serving not just their fellow students but also the local community as well as the whole society.
