PREFACE

The special report on “Annual and Seasonal Rainfall Pattern and

Area Coverage during Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2014”. The report

covers the analysis of rainfall pattern & area coverage for taluks and

districts during the Pre-monsoon, South-west monsoon, North-East

monsoon seasons and for the year.

Besides, the report presents the extent of principal Kharif and

Rabi crops sown during the year and their coverage compared to normal

area.

This report was prepared by Smt. Sumathi Asst. Director,

CHAPTER – I

Seasonal and Annual Rainfall Pattern during 2014 in

Karnataka

1. Progress of Pre-monsoon rainfall pattern (January to May – 2014):

The pre-monsoon showers are received during April-May every year. During the

reference year, 95 and 144 taluks received excess and normal rainfall in March and May

respectively. In the state however, during the months of February and March there was

sporadic and scattered rainfall for a few days resulting in receipt of either normal or excess

rainfall, 31 taluks in February and 93 taluks in April.

For the Pre-monsoon season, the State had received an average rainfall of 179 mm,

which is 29 % more than the normal of 138 mm. Rainfall was excess in 18 districts, normal in

8 districts, and deficit in the remaining 4 districts. Among 176 taluks, 97 taluks received

excess, 41 taluks had normal, 36 taluks received deficit and 2 taluks received below normal

rainfall.

2. Progress of South-West monsoon (June to September 2014):

During the year, the onset of South-West monsoon in the State occurred on 9th June

2014 in parts of coastal, South-Interior & North Interior Karnataka and covered entire state by

20th June 2014.

The quantum of rainfall normally received during the South-West monsoon (June to

September) is 71 %, which is the major contributing factor to drinking water sources,

agricultural activities and power generation. Further, nearly 80 % of the cropped area is to

being covered in this season alone.

The normal seasonal rainfall in the State is 821 mm and the actual rainfall received

was 827 mm during the South-West monsoon 2014, which is 1% more than the normal,

which falling under “normal“ category. In the month of June 52 taluks, in July 113 taluks, in

August 150 taluks and in September 90 taluks received normal to excess rainfall.

The total rainfall received for the season among the 30 districts indicates that, 6

districts experienced excess, 19 districts has normal rainfall and 5 districts received deficit

rainfall . Regarding distribution among taluks, 41 taluks recorded excess rainfall, 98 taluks

had normal, 34 taluks fall under deficit category and 3 taluks received scanty rainfall.

3. Progress of North-East monsoon (October to December – 2014):

The quantum of rainfall normally received during the North-East monsoon season is

around 17 % of the annual rainfall. As against the normal of 193 mm, the State had received

172 mm which is 11 % less than the normal. Among three months of North-East monsoon

(October to December) rainfall during October, 44 taluks was excess, normal in 57 taluks,

below normal in 74 taluks. In November, it was excess in 24 taluks, 17 taluks had normal, 50

taluks it was deficit & scanty in the remaining 77 taluks. In December it was excess in 76

taluks, normal in 22 taluks and below normal in 18 taluks, and the remaining 31 taluks there

was scanty.

For the season as a whole, 3 districts comes under excess .15 districts under normal,

deficit in 9 districts and scanty in remaining 3 districts. Regarding distribution among taluks,

39 taluks received excess rainfall, 57 taluks had normal, 64 taluks come under deficit

category and scanty in remaining in 16 taluks during North-East monsoon-2014.

4. Progress of Annual rainfall (January to December – 2014):

The actual average rainfall received in the State during the year 2014 was 1180 mm,

whereas the normal rainfall was 1165 mm thus falling under the normal category.

At district level, out of 30 districts in the State, excess rainfall in 5 districts, normal

rainfall in 20 districts and remaining 5 districts it was deficit. At the taluk level, precipitation in

43 taluks was excess, normal in 101 taluks, deficit in 31 taluks and scanty in one taluk.

In the revenue division of Bangalore, rainfall received out of 52 taluks, 10 taluks was

excess, 27 taluks received normal, deficit in 14 taluks and scanty in one taluk. In Mysore

division, out of 44 taluks, 5 taluks under excess rainfall, 19 taluks under normal rainfall,

deficit in 16 taluks and the remaining 4 taluks received deficit. In Gulbarga division out of 31

taluks, 5 had excess rainfall, 15 taluks had normal and remaining 11 taluks it was deficit. In

Belgaum division, out of 49 taluks, 9 taluks received excess, normal in 27 taluks and deficit

in 13 taluks.

CHAPTER – II

District wise review of seasonal and annual rainfall pattern

I Bangalore Division:

1. Bangalore (Urban):

The rainfall of pre-monsoon season was recorded as deficit while one taluk it

was normal and remaining 3 taluks it was deficit. During South-West monsoon, it

was excess and normal each in one taluk and deficit in 2 taluks. However, during

North-East monsoon 2 taluk had excess and one taluk each in normal and deficit.

The annual pattern shows that one taluk each had excess and normal deficit in the

remaining 2 taluks. The district’s average rainfall was 796 mm, which was 11 %

less than the normal rainfall of 896 mm.

2. Bangalore Rural:

The pre-monsoon rainfall was normal and deficit in 2 taluks each. During

South-West monsoon, the rainfall was excess and deficit in 2 taluks each. However,

during the North-east monsoon season 2 taluks each had excess and normal

rainfall. The annual rainfall pattern shows that one taluk had excess and in the

remaining 3 taluks the rainfall was normal. The district received 883 mm annual

rainfall, which was 6% more when compared to the normal rainfall of 836mm.

3. Chitradurga:

Out of 6 taluks in the district, during pre-monsoon 4 taluks had excess &

one taluk each had normal and deficit rainfall . In South-west monsoon 5 taluks had

excess and one taluk had normal rainfall. During North-east monsoon, 4 taluks had

excess rainfall. Normal and deficit rainfall in one taluk each. For annual rainfall, it

was excess in all the 6 taluks. The annual rainfall of the district was 761 mm, 28 %

more when compared to the normal rainfall of 593 mm.

4. Davanagere:

The pre-monsoon pattern shows 5 taluks had excess & deficit rainfall in one

taluk. During the South-West monsoon, 4 taluks received normal and 2 taluk

received deficit rainfall. During North-East monsoon 4 taluks received excess and

one each received normal and deficit rainfall. In the annual rainfall season, one taluk

had excess and 5 taluks received normal rainfall. The district’s average annual

rainfall was 743 mm, 9 % more than the normal rainfall of 681 mm.

5. Kolar:

Rainfall during the pre-monsoon season, one taluk had normal rainfall and 4

taluks had deficit rainfall. During South-West monsoon, 2 taluks received normal

rainfall and 3 taluks received deficit rainfall. During North-East monsoon, 2 taluks

had excess rainfall and one taluk each received normal, deficit and scanty rainfall.

The classification of overall annual status indicates that 2 taluks had normal rainfall

and 3 taluks received deficit rainfall. The district’s average annual rainfall was 624

mm; it was 18 % less than the normal rainfall of 757 mm.

6. Shimoga:

The pre-monsoon rainfall was excess in 6 taluks and normal in one taluk.

During the South-West monsoon excess rainfall in 4 taluks and normal rainfall in 3

taluks. The pattern of North-East monsoon shows that one taluk received excess

rainfall and 3 taluks each received normal and deficit rainfall. The total annual rainfall

was excess in 4 taluks and normal in 3 taluks. The district average rainfall during the

year was 2236 mm, 23 % more than the normal rainfall of 1811 mm.

7. Tumkur:

Out of 10 taluks in the district, rainfall was excess in 5 taluks, normal in 2

taluks and deficit in 3 taluks during pre-monsoon season. During South-West

monsoon season, the rainfall was found to be excess in 4 taluks normal in 5 taluks

and deficit in the remaining one taluk. In North-East Monsoon 5 taluks received

excess, 3 taluks received normal and deficit in 2 taluks.

Annual rainfall for the seasons shows that, excess in 3 taluks, normal in the

other remaining 7 taluks. The year as whole, the district had 843 mm of rainfall, 14%

more when compared to normal rainfall of 739 mm.

8. Ramanagar:

In this district, the rainfall was excess and normal in one taluk each and deficit

in 2 taluks, during pre-monsoon period. During South-West monsoon the rainfall was

normal in all the 4 taluks. The North-East monsoon rainfall was found to be excess

and normal in one taluk each and deficit in 2 remaining taluks. The annual rainfall

pattern shows that, 3 taluks had normal rainfall and one taluk had deficit rainfall.

Overall the annual rainfall in the district received 833 mm, which is less by 6 % when

compared to the normal rainfall of 882 mm.

9. Chikkaballapura:

Out of 6 taluks in the district, one taluk had excess, normal in 2 taluks & deficit

rainfall in the remaining 3 taluks during pre-monsoon season. During the South-West

monsoon, the rainfall was deficit in 4 taluks and scanty in 2 taluks. During the North-

East monsoon 5 taluks had deficit, and scanty in one taluk. The annual rainfall

pattern was found to be deficit in all the 6 taluks. The actual rainfall in the district was

470 mm, 37 % less than the normal rainfall of 747 mm.

II.Mysore Division:

10. Chamarajanagar:

The rainfall during pre-monsoon was excess and deficit in one taluk each and

scanty in 2 taluks. Whereas in the South-West monsoon season one taluk each for

excess, normal, deficit and scanty rainfall. In North-East Monsoon season, the

rainfall was deficit for all the 4 taluks. The pattern of Annual rainfall shows that one

taluk each normal and scanty and 2 taluks had deficit. Overall, annual rainfall in the

district received 578mm, which is less by 31 % compared to the normal rainfall of 835

mm.

11. Chickmagalur:

Out of 7 taluks in the district, 5 taluks had excess and 2 taluks received normal

rainfall. During the South-West monsoon, the rainfall was excess in 2 taluks and

normal in the remaining 5 taluks. For the North-East monsoon season the rainfall was

normal in 3 taluks and deficit in 4 taluks. The annual rainfall pattern was found to be

excess in 2 taluks and normal in the remaining 5 taluks. The actual annual rainfall in

the district was 2153 mm, 12 % more than the normal rainfall of 1925 mm.

12. Dakshina Kannada:

In this coastal district, 3 taluks had excess and one taluk each had deficit and

normal rainfall during pre-monsoon season. During South-West monsoon, 4 taluks

received normal rainfall and one taluk received deficit rainfall. The North-East

monsoon rainfall was found to be excess and normal in one taluk each, deficit in the

remaining 3 taluks. The annual rainfall pattern was found to be normal in all the 5

taluks. The district average annual rainfall was 3654 mm, 7 % less than the normal

rainfall of 3934 mm.

13. Hassan:

During the pre-monsoon season, 4 taluks had excess, normal rainfall in 3

taluks and deficit in remaining one taluk. But during South-West monsoon season, 2

taluks received excess and 6 taluks had normal rainfall. During the North-East

monsoon season there was normal in 3 taluks, deficit in 4 taluks and scanty rainfall in

the remaining 1 taluk. The overall annual rainfall pattern shows that 3 taluks received

excess and normal rainfall in 5 taluks. The annual rainfall of the district was 1080

mm, 7 % more than the normal rainfall of 1013 mm.

14. Kodagu:

In this district rainfall was normal in 2 taluks and deficit in one taluk during the

pre-monsoon. The rainfall during south west monsoon, one taluk had excess and 2

taluks received normal rainfall. In the North-East monsoon season one taluk had

deficit rainfall and other 2 taluks had scanty rainfall .The annual rainfall of the district

shows that all the 3 taluks had normal rainfall. The district average rainfall was 2686

mm which is almost equal to same normal rainfall of 2682 mm.

15. Mandya:

There was excess rainfall in one taluk and normal in 2 taluks and deficit in 4

taluks during the pre-monsoon period. The rainfall pattern of South-West monsoon

was found to be excess in one taluk, normal in 3 taluks and deficit in the remaining 3

taluks. During the North-East monsoon one taluk had excess and normal rainfall in 6

taluks. The annual rainfall pattern shows that 6 taluk normal rainfall and one taluk

received deficit rainfall . The annual rainfall of the district was 671 mm, 8 % less

than the normal rainfall of 730 mm.

16. Mysore:

The pre-monsoon rainfall was excess and deficit in 2 taluks each, and normal

in the remaining 3 taluks. The rainfall during South-West monsoon was found to be

excess and normal in 3 taluks each and deficit in one taluk. During North-East

monsoon season 4 taluks received normal rainfall, 3 taluks received normal deficit

and one taluk received scanty rainfall. The annual rainfall was found to be normal in

6 taluks and deficit in remaining one taluk. The district received annual rainfall of 817

mm, 2 % more than the normal rainfall of 798 mm.

17. Udupi:

In this coastal district, normal in one taluk and deficit in two taluks during Pre-

monsoon season. During the South-West monsoon normal in one taluk and deficit in

two taluks. During the North east monsoon, one taluk each had excess, normal and

deficit rainfall. The annual rainfall was found to be normal in 2 taluks and deficit in

the remaining one taluk. The district average annual rainfall was 3575 mm, 16 %

less than the normal rainfall of 4234 mm.

III. Gulbarga Division:

18. Bellary:

Out of 7 taluks in the district, 5 taluks had excess rainfall and 2 taluks had

normal rainfall during Pre-monsoon. In South-West monsoon, the rainfall was

excess in one taluk and normal in 6 taluks. For North- East monsoon 2 taluks had

normal and remaining 5 taluks had deficit rainfall. For annual rainfall , one taluk

each for excess and deficit and remaining 5 taluks had normal rainfall. The district

average annual rainfall was 651 mm, 2 % more than the normal rainfall of 637 mm.

19. Bidar:

During the pre-monsoon season, it was excess in 4 taluks and normal rainfall

in one taluk. While in the South-West monsoon, one taluk had normal rainfall and

remaining 4 taluks the rainfall was deficit. In the North-East monsoon, 2 taluks

reported deficit rainfall and scanty in 3 taluks. The annual rainfall for the season

shows that, 2 taluks had normal rainfall and 3 taluks received deficit rainfall. The

district average annual rainfall was 680 mm, 22 % less than the normal of 876 mm.

20. Gulbarga:

Out of 7 taluks in the district, all the 7 taluks had excess rainfall during pre-

monsoon season. During the South-West monsoon season, 3 taluks received

normal and 4 taluks received deficit rainfall. While in North-East monsoon season,

3 taluks each had normal and deficit rainfall and one taluk received scanty rainfall.

The annual rainfall situation shows that, one taluk had excess rainfall and 3 taluks

each had normal and deficit rainfall. The district annual average rainfall was 767 mm,

less by 6 % as compared to the normal of 820 mm.

21. Koppal:

During the pre-monsoon season all the 4 taluks had excess rainfall. In south

west monsoon the rainfall was excess and normal in 2 taluks each. Whereas, it was

normal rainfall in 3 taluks and deficit in one taluk during North East monsoon. But

during the annual season the rainfall was excess in 3 taluks and normal in one

taluk. The district annual average rainfall was 761 mm, more 27 % more compared

to the normal of 598 mm.

22. Raichur:

During the pre-monsoon season one taluk had excess and normal in the

remaining 4 taluks. Whereas the rainfall was normal in 3 taluks and deficit in 2 taluks

during South-West monsoon season. North-East monsoon season shows that, deficit

rainfall in 2 taluks and 3 taluks had scanty rainfall. During annual season, the rainfall

was normal in 3 taluks and deficit in 2 taluks. The district annual rainfall received was

548 mm 20 % less than the normal rainfall of 687 mm.

23. Yadgir:

During the pre-monsoon season, in this district all the 3 taluks had excess

rainfall. Whereas, it was normal in one taluk and deficit rainfall in remaining 2 taluks

during the south west monsoon season. During North East monsoon deficit in 2

taluks and scanty in one taluk and annual season, the rainfall was recorded normal

in one taluk and deficit in the remaining 2 taluks. The district annual average rainfall

was 647 mm, 22% less as compared to the normal of 834 mm.

IV Belgaum Division:

24. Bagalkote:

Out of 6 taluks in the district, 5 taluks received excess and one taluk had

normal rainfall during pre- monsoon period. During south west monsoon season all

the 6 taluks had normal rainfall. The North East monsoon season received 4 taluks

of normal rainfall, and one taluk each received deficit and scanty rainfall . Annual

rainfall it was excess in 2 taluks and normal rainfall in 4 taluks. The district actual

annual rainfall was 639 mm, 8 % more than the normal rainfall of 592 mm.

25. Belgaum:

The Pre-monsoon rainfall was found to be excess in 7 taluks, 2 taluks had

normal and deficit in one taluk. The South-West monsoon rainfall had excess in 4

taluks and normal in 6 taluks. The rainfall in the North-East Monsoon season , had

received excess rainfall in 4 taluks and normal rainfall in 6 taluks. The annual

rainfall was excess in 4 taluks and normal in 6 taluks. The district average annual

rainfall was found to be 903 mm, which is 10 % more than the normal rainfall of 823

mm.

26. Bijapur:

In this district, 4 taluks received excess and normal rainfall in one taluk during

Pre-monsoon season. But in South-West monsoon season, 2 taluks had normal and

3 taluks received deficit rainfall. The rainfall during North-East monsoon season the

rainfall was normal in one taluk and deficit in 4 taluks. The annual rainfall was normal

in 2 taluks and deficit in 3 taluks. The district received annual rainfall of 531 mm,

19% less compared to the normal of 657 mm.

27. Dharwad:

The rainfall received during pre-monsoon season was excess in 3 taluks and

normal in in 2 taluks. The south west monsoon rainfall had excess in all the 5 taluks.

However, the rainfall received during North-East monsoon season was excess in 3

taluks and deficit in 2 taluks. The annual rainfall pattern was found to be excess in

one taluk and normal in 4 taluks. The district average rainfall recorded 899 mm,

more than 14 % of the normal rainfall of 791 mm.

28. Gadag:

Among 5 taluks in the district, the rainfall was excess in 4 taluks and normal in

one taluk during pre-monsoon period. Whereas, during South-West monsoon

season, the rainfall was excess in 2 taluks and normal in 3 taluks. During the North-

East monsoon season the rainfall was normal in 4 taluks and deficit in one taluk.

During the annual rainfall season 2 taluks had excess and normal in 3 taluks. The

annual rainfall of the district was 817 mm found to be more by 27 % compared to the

normal rainfall of 641 mm.

29. Haveri:

Out of 7 taluks in the district, the pre-monsoon was excess in all the 7 taluks.

During the South West monsoon, 6 taluks had excess rainfall and normal in

remaining one taluk In North-East monsoon season, 3 taluks had excess rainfall and

normal in 4 taluks. The annual rainfall pattern was found to be excess in 6 taluks

and normal in one taluk. The average annual rainfall of the district was 1097 mm,

more by 39 % of the normal rainfall of 792 mm.

30. Uttara Kannada:

The pre-monsoon rainfall received in this district was excess in 5 taluks,

normal in 2 taluks, deficit in 4 taluks. The rainfall during the South-West monsoon

season, excess in one taluk and normal in the remaining 10 taluks. During the North-

East monsoon season, 3 taluks had excess, normal in 4 taluks, deficit in 3 taluks and

scanty in the remaining one taluk.. The annual rainfall was excess in 2 taluks and

normal in 9 taluks. For the year as a whole, the district received 2933 mm of rainfall,

1 % more than the normal rainfall of 2895 mm.

CHAPTER-III

Area Coverage of principal Kharif crops – 2014:

The commissionerate of Agriculture had fixed a target of 74.00 lakh hectares

under all food and non-food crops, covering 23 principal crops for the Kharif 2014.

This was less by 7% approximately to the target by achieving an area of 69.35 lakh

hectares. The crop wise targeted area and area sown during Kharif-2014 are

appended in the Statement-I in the report.

Among Cereals, Maize registered the highest coverage of 104% of the

targeted area, followed by Rice , Ragi, Minor Millets 91% each and Bajra 74%.

Among Pulses, Mothbean recorded highest coverage of 89% compared to

the targeted area, followed by , Tur 86%, and Cowpea 74%, Green gram 73 %,

Avare 72% and Black gram 67%.

Proceeding to Oilseeds, Soya bean registered the maximum coverage of

114 % of the targeted area, followed by Groundnut 73 %, Sesamum 72 %, Sun

flower 68 %, Niger 48% Castor 47 %, and the least being with Mustered 45 %.

In case of commercial crops, cotton recorded 162% of area coverage being

the highest, followed by Sugarcane 104%. But in respect of Tobacco coverage was

91%.

The district-wise area targetted and area sown for Kharif 2014 is furnished in

Statement – II.

Area coverage can be categorized into three classes. In Davanagere, Haveri,

Uttara Kannada, Raichur, and Bellary districts recorded 100%. Districts like

Chickballapur,Shimoga,Chitradurga,Mysore,Charajamanagar,Hassan,

Chikkamagular, Udupi, Dharwad Gadag Belagum, Bijapur Bagalkote Koppal

Gulbarga and Bidar recorded coverage from 91-99%. Whereas districts like

Bangalore Rural, Ramanagar, Kolar, Mandya, Kodagu and Yadgir was between 75

to 90%.

Area coverage of principal Rabi crops - 2014:

The coverage of 23 principal Rabi crops was only 13% less than the targeted

area. The details are appended in the Statement -III in the report.

Area covered under commercial crops pulses, cereals and oilseeds was 96%,

85% and 66% respectively to the targets, with a shortage of 4%, 15% and 34%

respectively. Among pulses, while the percentage of coverage was more than the

target in respect of Green gram. Whereas among commercial crops Sugarcane and

Tobacco targeted more than 100%.

The district-wise area targeted and sown for Rabi season during the year

2014 is appended in Statement – IV in the report.

Among 8 districts viz., Bangalore (U),Bangalore Rural, Ramanagar, Kolar,

Shimoga, Mandya, Dakshina Kannada and Haveri where the area sown was more

than the target, where as in the remaining 22 districts the area sown was less than

the target.
