LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER April / May 2016

380Guide Magazine is an active member of the following Chambers of Commerce located in the 380Corridor:

We are excited to announce that our sister publication, 380News, received Honorable Mention for the Media award from Keep Texas Beautiful. “The Media

Award recognizes the public awareness and education efforts of media in supporting

environmental issues.” Only ten publications were recognized in Texas and we are very pleased to be one of them. We would like to give a big thank you to Keep Aubrey Beautiful for the nomination.

Spring is such a beautiful time of the year. The 380 Corridor comes to life with flowers blooming, trees budding and turtles, ducklings and other wildlife start to show themselves. The abundance of nature in our area is so easily accessible; we are blessed with Horse Country, two spectacular lakes, a lush greenbelt and several hiking trails in the area.

Over the past year, we are also starting to see all of the conveniences popping up quickly along Highway 380. It seems like every day there is something new going on and we are doing our best to keep up with the changes and development in our monthly publication 380News. However, some things are happening so quickly that we are updating between publications on our news website www.380News.com.

If you have nothing to do over the next few months, 380Guide can help you fill your schedule. There are many affordable area springtime events, activities and destinations to enjoy in and around the corridor. You can find detailed information about all of these events inside this issue!

Connecting with your family through an amazing social sport in the area is so easy with polo season underway. Prestonwood Polo and Country Club will be hosting exciting events all season, including the ever popular Polo on the Lawn. The VIP tent will have delicious Italian food graciously provided by Nick’s in Pilot Point. All proceeds this year will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. You can also drop anchor at DCYC in Oak Point on April 9. They will host an open house. For more information visit DCYC.org.

The 380 Corridor offers a very unique lifestyle and we hope that all of our readers enjoy it as much as we do.

Please remember to support your locally owned businesses, because they are the first to support your area organizations, schools and charities. As always, we are deeply appreciative of our advertisers. Without them, we would not be able to share all of the area events and activities with our readers.

Case Management Children & Pregnant Women

Case management is a free Medicaid benefit for children (birth to age 20) and pregnant women that have a high risk pregnancy. Through the program, case managers link families to available community resources so they are able to obtain needed medical services, equipment or other amenities that are deemed to be medically necessary, as well as dental, social and school services.

A case manager will make a call to complete intake/referral and find out what services you need, and then find services in or near the area you live. Case managers will also teach you how to find access to those needed medical, dental, educational, vocational, or other social services in the future.

Examples of medical and dental services include: finding and scheduling visits with doctors and dentists, or coordinating services with other specialists, as well as helping you find the medical

equipment you need. They can also link you to financial assistance or transportation, if needed to get to medical appointments.

A case manager might also help you with educational or vocational services, such as assisting with the special education process and addressing other school issues. A case manager will even accompany parents to school meetings, such as ARD or 504 meetings, or meetings addressing other school issues, in order to support and advocate for you and your child, while promoting understanding of the decisions that are made regarding your child.

You are eligible for case management services if you are eligible for Medicaid, a woman with a high risk pregnancy, or if you are a child with a health condition. Anyone can make a referral to case management. There is no prescription required and parents can refer their own child. To make a referral, contact Debbie Marino, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), at Pediatric Therapy, Inc.

HILLWOOD COMMUNITIES GRAND OPENS UNION PARK:

NEW, AFFORDABLE LUXURY

COMMUNITY IN SWEET SPOT OF

HIGHWAY 380 CORRIDOR

Over $700 Million Community to Offer Abundance of Parks and Open Space

Hillwood Communities celebrates the Grand Opening of Union Park, a 787-acre master-planned community located in the “sweet spot” of the Highway 380 Corridor in Little Elm, Texas. The $700 million+ project will feature a wooded, 35-acre park with an indoor/outdoor Pavilion, outdoor kitchen, resort style pool, pond, and trails.

Located along the U.S. Highway 380 corridor, Union Park will feature a quality lifestyle-driven community with approximately 2,400 single-family homes and 100 acres of parks and open space. The community is designed with a central hub where residents will come together to play, relax and enjoy community-wide activities and events. Five homebuilders offer a wide variety of floorplans and designs; American Legend Homes, Drees Homes, Emerald Homes, Highland Homes and Plantation Homes.

“Union Park showcases all of the amenities of a Hillwood Communities master-planned neighborhood,” said Fred Balda, president of Hillwood Communities. “We were very deliberate in building this community with more than twice the required green space to promote a small town feel and encourage socialization.”

The first phase of Union Park has 400 homes in a range of lot sizes starting in the mid-$200s to the mid $400s. Union Park was designed with Hillwood’s five LiveSmart Principles: Sense of Community, Technology, Healthy Living, Environmental Stewardship and Education & Enrichment.

An open-air pavilion, pocket parks and food truck park encourage outdoor community interaction. An on-site lifestyle manager will plan special events and programs for the homeowners.

The community is located directly across from the new Denton ISD Braswell High School, scheduled to open in August, 2016. Union Park has the advantage of K-12 schools, all located within one mile, with a future on-site elementary campus.

“Union Park has been designed with an emphasis on ‘sense of community’ with the development centered on a 35-acre park, serving as the heart of the community where residents can gather together,” said Elaine Ford, Senior Vice President of Hillwood Communities.

Strategically located in the Highway 380 growth corridor, residents of Union Park will enjoy access to the nearby retail and major employment areas of Legacy, Frisco, Plano, Denton, University of North Texas and DFW International Airport, as well as recreational areas like Lake Lewisville and Lake Ray Roberts.

HOLLY GLOVER, PAC | LEAH SCHILLER, PAC | ERIC WEISBERG, M.D.

• Braswell High School update •

Ray Braswell High School is Denton ISD’s fourth comprehensive high school located at the corner of Navo Road and Highway 380. The high school is named after retired superintendent Dr. Ray Braswell, who continues to give his time and talent to the district. The school’s athletic complex, the Bill Carrico Athletic Complex, is named after the late Coach Bill Carrico. Carrico was also a longtime district employee who continued to give his time and talent to the district after his retirement.

Students had the opportunity to vote on the school’s colors and mascot during the fall semester. The red and black

Braswell Bengals will make their debut in August, 2016 when the school opens its doors to approximately 1100 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Students zoned for Braswell will include Navo Middle School’s 8th graders and 9th and 10th graders from Ryan and Denton High Schools. The Denton ISD School Board approved the attendance zone for Braswell High School earlier this semester.

Braswell will begin its inaugural year competing on the varsity level in athletics. The school will offer the same sports and academic opportunities as other Denton ISD high schools. Organizations such as Student Council, National Honor Society, Key Club, and AFJROTC will have a place at BHS, just to name a few.

There are currently over 30 faculty and staff hired so far for next year. Office staff currently under contract for Braswell include: Principal: Lesli Guajardo, Principal’s Secretary: DeAnn Roberson, Lead Counselor: Nicole Dampman, Campus Athletic Director/Head Football Coach: Cody Moore and Library Media Specialist: Noel Hill.

Group leaders, such as cheer and drill team coaches, are working this spring to hold try outs for next fall. Other groups, such as band and athletics, are also working with kids this spring to develop leaders who can help the organizations start strong next fall.

Families and community members can find out more information about Braswell High School through Denton ISD website (www. dentonisd.org/braswellhs), the school’s Facebook page (www. facebook.com/braswellhs) or through Twitter (@braswellhs).

Novi SadA Hidden Gem on the Danube

by Jodie Linton-Prickett

The Journey:It was solely my idea to drag my husband and youngest son to a destination that was relatively obscure,

in a country with a recently truculent past. Consequently, there was a tinge of apprehension as my family boarded the train for a seven hour journey to a place we knew very little about. However, the way I see it, traveling is an adventure, a cultural awakening, and you have to continually push your comfort level to understand the world a little better.

So, off to Novi Sad, Serbia we went in a train that could be viewed as a little tired . . . all right, undeniably exhausted. Even the first class cars were worse for wear. Being optimistic, I preferred to think of our six seat compartment as a place with a lot of history and stories to tell. For several hours, we travelled across a relatively placid countryside. The skies were gray, and fog hovered around the train like it was foreshadowing what was yet to come. Looking out the window at the seemingly endless plains, the view was flat and eventless except for a few deer and several pheasants running or flying away as the train startled them. Once the train started rocking and humming, my fellow travelers fell asleep. I had prepared myself with a book to read, but I never looked away from the window long enough to open it. My mind could not stop thinking about what type of escapade was in store for us.

Passing through the border patrol was routine and eventless as we exited Hungary, but that changed as we rolled slowly to the border patrol in Subotica, Serbia. We had now left the Schengen Area, so as expected, our passports were scrutinized by one of the stout, grim faced guards. Of course, all of the guard’s looked official, almost intimidating, and the one in our compartment was nothing less than serious as he held the picture page of our passports close to our faces and looked from our photo to us, then back to the photo two to three times. He then purposefully flipped through the pages, then decisively swiped the magnetic strip through his hand held device, ending by abruptly applying a fresh new stamp on one of our open pages. For me, that part was somehow satisfying enough to put up with all of the other bits. After our officer finished and handed our passports back to us, he broke a semi-pleasant smile and in English cloaked with a thick accent said, “Good luck,” as he shut our compartment door. None of this is unusual, traveling anywhere outside of the Schengen Area. It always seems to be choreographed in an analogous manner, It was the “Good luck,” that threw me a bit. I told myself it was just a translation issue as I tried to enjoy the last few hours of the train ride.

After entering Serbia, each train station we stopped at was either frightening or almost nonexistent. One was nothing more than a bench in a field. Another looked like a building from the movie Hostel. All I could think was, “What have I done?” So, I reminded myself the hotel that I had booked received amazing reviews! It was a fortress hotel. That night we were to sleep in a castle! The more I thought about the hotel, the more I started to question it (blurbs from Hostel once more fueled my imagination). How am I staying in a five star hotel for two nights, including spa services and breakfast for not much more than a total of $150.00 US? Thus, I reverted back to the question, “what have I done?’ As the sun started to set, the fog settled in tightly around the train only adding to the intensity of the rest of the ride.10 www.380Guide.com

The Destination:

AH, THIS IS IT, THIS IS WHERE THE ENCHANTMENT WAS HIDING.

Finally, we pulled into a surprisingly large train station around 7:00 pm. We gathered our luggage and headed out to find a taxi to whisk us to our hotel (which was located on a mountain across the Danube in the fortress, like I said earlier). However, I did not see any of this! We were deep in a very cosmopolitan looking city with tall buildings and modern everything. Where was my magical, enchantingly historical village? I elected not to go to Belgrade, choosing Novi Sad instead to avoid the big city with the overwhelming population. Yet, there we stood in a taxi line amongst busy sidewalks, bright lights and vehicles of every modern type buzzing around.

We hopped in the next available taxi and told the driver where we needed to go. Then, he pulled out and joined the bumper to bumper traffic, stopping at traffic light after traffic light. Just when I had resolved that Novi Sad was not the fairy-tale place I had hoped it would be, we started to get out of the thick of things. Within a few miles, we were passing the historical area of the town, crossing the newly refurbished bridge spanning the Danube, and gazing at the magnificent Fortress of Petrovaradin, imposing, yet gracefully adorning the Fruska Gora Mountain in front of us.

Ah, this is it, this is where the enchantment was hiding. As we approached the incline, the streets turned to cobblestone and the fog lowered around the car, as we drove into a Roman style vaulted tunnel that snaked under the ground, slowly rising to the exit at the top releasing us into a courtyard of the castle. The hotel lived up to its five star reputation, as they greeted us with. “We have been expecting you.”

Walking through the 300 year old castle, it was impossible not to feel the history surrounding you. Before taking us to our room, they took us into a romantically decorated parlor, dripping with luscious crystal chandeliers and served us refreshments of lemonade and a sweet peach Serbian delight, while they prepared our room with warm cookies and a scrolled welcome letter. The hotel Leopold’s amazing reviews were right and it possibly even exceeded them.

The fortress area has three amazing restaurants perched high on the hill overlooking the bright luminescence of the bustling city below. The lights from across the river reflected gently off the Danube, and the yellow illuminations below the fortress quietly accenting the stone walls made for an unreal experience. We chose one of the restaurants and lingered there in the Winter Garden eating delicious Serbian food with some of the best service you could imagine. The exquisite meal with appetizers, wine, entrée and a shared desert was less expensive than a casual meal in a chain restaurant in the DFW area.

After spending a lavish night in our palace suite and relaxing in our oversized Jacuzzi, we decided to explore the fortress. The sprawling, tiered grounds had several old world wooden doors that led to shops, artists’ studios, bars and nightclubs. The Petrovaradin Fortress today is one of the largest art colonies in the world. Here you can also find the Novi Sad Museum. Some of the artists that have studios there are internationally known. There were painters, writers and political artists that had caused a stir more than a time or two in the former Yugoslavia and Serbia. All of the artists are interested in having a conversation, so stop and visit or a while. If you work your way down the side of the hill, just across the banks of the Danube there is an amazing historical area with beautiful churches, antiquated

buildings, and of course cobblestone pedestrian areas.

We arrived in the square just in time, as it filled with the sound of church bells, and a Santa Motorcycle ride (much like our Toys for Tots), began. It was festive and young at heart, resulting in a fantastically good time. The Christmas Market filled the square with booths brimming with artisans making and selling, soaps, jewelry, candles and cookies. Other booths had local honey, jellies and schnapps.

If you are curious enough to peek behind the doors and venture into the courtyards, there are more treasures to be found. An extensive farmers market wrapped between the facades of the buildings that merged into another market with booths filled with soccer paraphernalia and Americanized clothes. If you are the type that is looking for a bargain, there are amazing deals to be had. You don’t even feel like negotiating the price because you almost feel bad paying how little they are asking to start with. Mind you, I said, “almost.” For a day, we ventured wherever the whim took us, through corridors, alleys, churches, bookstores, markets and shops. There was not a single souvenir shop to be found, so I knew that I was defiantly off the beaten path, and that is exactly where I wanted to be.

While Novi Sad is still obscure for the time being, the younger generation may know more about it than seasoned travelers, because of the event that puts it on the map. Each summer Novi Sad’s fortress is the home of EXIT Festival. It reminds me of a modern day Woodstock with a twist. In the year 2000, area students created a social movement which resulted in this annual event. Now the Exit mission is: “To spark positive social changes and speed up the evolution of human consciousness by using creative industries, top global artistic, educational and charity events as a means to spread the message of love and freedom to the whole planet; all this with a goal to make our vision come to life – Humanity and Earth in harmony on all levels; local, regional and global.”

Novi Sad was an unexpected delight. If you want to see it before it is a bustling with holiday makers, you need to hurry, because it is quickly on its way to becoming a tourist destination. More and more of the Danube cruise boats are including it as a stop on their itineraries. Also, due to the renovation of sixteen area monasteries, the area has been given the new name Saint Fruska Gora. This alone is drawing a new interest to the region.

It is easy to see why Novi Sad will not stay a hidden gem for long. The people are friendly, engaging and interested as well as interesting. They are eager to share their culture, but they are also willing to learn something about yours. Their service and hospitality industry is outstanding. The architecture is beautiful and the food is delicious. They embrace the arts and celebrate beauty. The city straddles the line between grit and exquisiteness, old and new, religious and secular. With such a harsh and turbulent recent past, I was not sure what to expect from Serbia, or their fortress city on the Danube, but I am so glad I took the chance. Novi Sad gave me exactly what I wanted, an opportunity to explore a culture, have faith in humanity and be thankful there are still magical places that don’t yet have souvenir shops. It is alright to be a little nervous when trying new things or traveling to new places. Not every place needs a guidebook. Some places find you and that is the allure.

Music Theatre of Denton presents In the Heights, the 2008 Tony Award winning musical for Best Musical and Best Original Score. Book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, Music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

Directed by Rebecca McDonald, Music Direction by John Norine, Jr., Choreography by Rebecca McDonald and Stage Managed by Jason Joos.

Performances will be held at the Campus Theatre the weekends of May 6 and 13, 2016. Individual tickets are currently on sale at www.musictheatreofdenton.com.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Ronnie Puente, Vaughn Miller Jr, Vance Miller III and Coach Vaughn Miller

Prestonwood Polo Club’s 22 new home lots 2.5 acres each

Welcome to our 2016 Prestonwood Polo Club magazine, wow what an exciting year! Congrats to our boys for winning the National Polo High School Championship. Prestonwood players Vaughn Miller Jr, Vance Miller III and Ronnie Puente defeated Maryland West Shore to bring the 1928 Interscholastic Polo trophy to Oak Point, Texas. Read more about their exciting victory on our newly re-vamped website www.PrestonwoodPolo.com

Prestonwood is the premier polo club of north Texas, located on 97 acres of pristine real estate north of Dallas between Frisco and Denton in the town of Oak Point. We’re in the process of completing an exciting re-development of the polo grounds which will include 22 new home lots with spectacular views of the polo fields and a new grand entrance from FM 720. Prestonwood has three polo fields and two polo arenas where we play polo year-round. We play on our outdoor grass fields in spring, summer and fall; and in the winter months we play arena polo. Our youth polo program is one of the most successful in the country and Coached by club founder, Vaughn Miller (2-goals), his teams are 4-time Central USA High School Champions and now National Champions. Our Saturday polo is a fan favorite and matches are open to the public, it’s the best tailgate in the 380 corridor. We host 2 major charity events each year, tickets may be purchased on-line so check our Event schedule and plan your visit:Spring – May 7 - Polo on the Lawn Kentucky Derby dayFall – Oct 29 - Polo on the Midway 380Guide Cup

Prestonwood was launched by Vaughn and Dena Miller in 2008 when they decided to create a family-friendly club with the goal of sharing their love of polo with the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area. That year they were featured on the cover of the

380Guide magazine and the next weekend was like a scene out of the movie Field of Dreams as the cars poured in to see the first real polo club in the 380 corridor. Since that time the Millers have been hard at work expanding the club, buying adjacent property and adding improvements. Their goal is to build a world class polo and equestrian development where people can live and play.

Fibromyalgia has been one of the real frustrations for the medical community for a long time. One of the reasons is that there aren’t any commonly used diagnostic tests to give a clear and certain diagnosis.

Another reason is that the fibromyalgic patient just does not seem to ever get ‘well’ irrespective of how hard the medical staff tries.

The truth is that there are clear indicative tests for this condition, just not at the blood labs or radiologic departments. This condition is one that we see in many people, and once we narrow in on what is causing it, we have a very good record of managing it at very low levels of discomfort and flare-ups. We work with the patient to do this without drugs, (medicine).

Fibromyalgia is so common, and causes so much misery that we offer free, no obligation consultations and physical examinations from time to time. We currently have set aside eight time slots that will disappear once they are taken or within two weeks. If you would like to have one of these available appointments, call now and schedule your appointment or leave a message for us to call you back @ Integrated Pain Relief 940-566-3599

IF YOU HAVE SOME OR MANY OF THESE, YOU MAY HAVE FIBROMYALGIA

FIBROMYALGIAFRUSTRATING AND REAL

• General achiness that can worsen and become localized, then switches areas for no apparent reason.

• Poor sleep quality.

• Your massage therapist just cannot seem to get your “triggerpoints” controlled, to relax your muscles for very long

• Vague, frequent headaches that may be sharp or even migraine-like from time to time.

• Your doctors do not want to put a name to your condition, even after many tests and you are getting the idea that they think it’s “all in your head.” They give you sleeping pills, gabapentin, or Lyrica which may give you some relief for a short period.

• You get worse with good workouts so you stop exercising, and start gaining weight

“After several doctors misdiagnosed my severe back pain, a friend recommended Prosper Chiropractic. They noticed a bulged disc and immediately started treatments. After several weeks of adjustments and decompression, I went from unable to move, to playing soccer again and competing with my horses! Recently, I hurt my ankle and without hesitation called Prosper Chiropractic and got an appointment right away! I am now doing great and I recommend Prosper Chiropractic to all my friends!” – Charlotte Decoster

“My job requires that I sit at a desk 8 to 12 hours a day. I had been having severe back pain between my shoulders, and my neck was so stiff that I couldn’t move it in either direction. I had never been to a chiropractor before, but everyone told me that I needed to go and they recommended Prosper Chiropractic. I only started a few weeks ago, but I immediately felt much better, and I’m continuing to feel better each week.” – Michale Hewlett

“…162 games a year, diving for fly balls, running into walls, getting hit by pitches, I am out there grinding every day! I am always sore and out of line and I come to Prosper Chiropractic and they get me back in line and keep me out on the field. by Helaine B. ThompsonThe warmer weather and longer days of Spring

are upon us, and that means it’s time to get out and about and find fun things to do. One of the most unique places in North Texas for a fun family day is, without a doubt, Scarborough Renaissance Festival!

Beginning April 9th and continuing for eight consecutive weekends, Scarborough Renaissance Festival will embark on its 36th season entertaining the people of North Texas within its beautiful 35 acre site filled with the majesty and revelry of the 16th Century.

There are so many things that make Scarborough Renaissance Festival so unique. To start, just take a look at the entertainment. There are 23 stages with non-stop performances taking place throughout each Festival day with entertainment you just won’t see anywhere else. All of the performers are extremely interactive with the audience and many even involving audience members in their shows: Full combat jousting, Birds of Prey exhibitions, sword fighting, fire breathing, Scottish bagpipes, belly dancing, vaudevillian type comedy and magic shows, acrobatics, Renaissance music, a rat circus, spoonerisms, whip masters and even a Human Chess Match just to name a few!

But there is so much more than that. You can be knighted by King Henry VIII and Queen Margaret, learn about the rules of engagement at the School of Sword, join in a lively Renaissance dance, watch the Grande Parade or even meet a mermaid up close and personal. Plus, there are over 150 costumed performers who bring the world of the Renaissance alive just about everywhere you turn along the tree lined lanes of the “Village of Scarborough”. It’s a selfie takers delight!

From there you can test your skills at games like archery, star throw, Jacob’s ladder, dunk a damsel and more. There are also Renaissance rides (all human powered), a petting zoo, or you can enjoy a ride on a pony, camel or elephant during your visit.

On the other side of things, it’s all about shopping and handmade crafts. Scarborough Renaissance Festival is one of the largest outdoor juried craft shows in the country with over 200 shops filled with one-of-a-kind treasures hand made by incredible artisans. You can also watch as these artisans demonstrate these age-old crafts like glass blowing, stone carving, weaving, pottery, book binding and metal works throughout each day.

When you are ready to take a break you will enjoy food fit for a king! The food at Scarborough Renaissance Festival® is a step above traditional “fair” food in both quality and delectable variety. You will definitely want to feast on our signature giant roasted Turkey legs (seasoned with the secret Scarborough spice and the best you will ever eat) and Scottish Eggs, but don’t miss out on the handmade pastas at the Pasta Palace, the tasty treats at the Scarborough Bakery or the largest selection of food-on-a-stick in Texas!

However, it doesn’t end there. You can indulge on crab cakes, Etouffee, fresh fruit, salads, stir-fry, gyros, giant fajitas, stuffed spuds, tempura delights, crepes, quiches and fish & chips; or try out some of the featured items at our full service restaurant – the Rose & Crown Inn – like Shepherd’s Pie, seasoned meat pies and daily specials.

Adults can get a taste of Scarborough Mead and other libations at the ten pubs and taverns. Those with a more discerning pallet can partake in the daily wine or beer tastings. The tastings are separate ticketed events and space is limited, so you will want to get your tickets ahead of time. Of course you must be 21 to enjoy the adult beverages.

As a special treat, each weekend has a different theme and includes many special events like the Mother’s Day Brunch, Renaissance Romance’s Vow Renewal Ceremony & Reception, the Royal Ale Festival, the Artisan’s Showcase, Celtic Weekend’s Celtic performances, Pirate & Mermaid costume contests on Legends of the Seas and Live the Fantasy weekends. Some of these are separate ticketed events and space is extremely limited, so get your tickets now.

So don’t miss out, its only here for eight weeks! Come step back in time for the time of your life at the most unique festival in North Texas - Scarborough Renaissance Festival®! Saturdays and Sundays and Memorial Day Monday - April 9th – May 30th. Just 30 minutes south of downtown Dallas off I-35E in Waxahachie. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. All kids 4 and under are free. Discount tickets can be found at Tom Thumb & Albertsons. Denton Community Theatre (DCT) is halfway through its 46th consecutive season of providing the Denton area with excellent live theatre. Located at the historic Campus Theatre, DCT embraces the concept of community theatre by having auditions open to anyone and everyone. Every production is staffed with volunteers. The directors, the actors, the designers, and the technicians all donate their time and talents to create shows that often rival (some would argue they exceed) professional theatrical works. DCT’s next main stage production will, once again, push the boundaries of what is possible with their upcoming production of Disney’s Mary Poppins. Director Jim Laney, music directors Ray Staniszewski and Becky King, scenic designer Philip Lamb, and a large cast filled with talent are creating an environment of pure magic for this production. Design work on this show began a year ago and incorporates animation with the live action.

This delightful musical introduces a very special nanny who is “practically perfect in every way”. She can make tidying up a magical experience. In fact she can make any endeavor or outing a magical experience. Audiences will be as delighted as her charges, the Banks children, when Mary Poppins arrives at 17 Cherry Lane. This show is sure to be “superclifragilisticexpialidocious” pleasing audience members aged six to 106. We even bet you will be tempted to “Step in Time” as you leave the theatre.

A Spoonful of Sugar

THE WORLD OF CRUISING IS VAST AND VARIED At the Top End of This World Are Luxury, River, and Specialty Cruises

any of these cruises are stunning bucket-list trips with price tags to match. I was recently fortunate enough to sail on the beautiful Celebrity Silhouette®, where service is the hallmark of the line. We were repeatedly

delighted at the service and atmosphere everywhere on board, at every turn, in every department, but it was the hundreds of little things in that made our trip so memorable. One such moment was an evening concert on the lawn, and yes, this ship has a real grass lawn on the upper deck. When we got there for the concert, we found that blankets, pillows and wine stands were placed randomly on the grass, beckoning to us to simply sit, relax and enjoy. We sailed out of Grand Cayman that evening on the lawn, at sunset, listening to acoustic guitar music while enjoying wine and cheese. I truly believe that this cruise added several years to my life, I came back so relaxed and refreshed!

Some of the niceties that you will find on many of these luxury and river ships are guest suites that stretch the imagination, the softest Egyptian cotton sheets imaginable, staff to guest ratios greater than 1:1 and top tier spa services. You might shower in a spectacular sea view bathroom in an all-glass shower, cantilevered over the ocean. Experience a smaller sailing yacht with a shallow draft allowing it to

navigate hidden harbors not accessible to the larger ships. On a river cruise, you may find yourself enjoying a glass of fine wine poolside while watching the sun-drenched French countryside slip gracefully by.

Specialty cruises are the new trend in travel, and with good reason. These itineraries combine the luxuries of cruising with the destinations that offer more immersive experiences. There are itineraries which will have you sitting in Boston harbor to watch 4th of July fireworks, or, if golf is your game, setting sail on a golf-themed cruise that includes a visit to the British Open. Lastly, for polo lovers, imagine a cruise starting in Chile and rounding Cape Horn, terminating in Buenos Aires. Spend a day there before heading inland to spend a week at one of Argentina’s famed polo ranches. For the novice and experienced player alike, every polo fan needs to experience the game in Argentina. Sitting high atop my own list is a river cruise during the holidays to visit the Christmas Markets in Switzerland, where the Rhine valley becomes a wonderland filled with storybook towns, snow-flecked castles and unsurpassed shopping opportunities. One of the best things about cruises in general is that these amazing destinations are always at your doorstep, since your floating hotel is always with you.

TEA & SODA POP WITH SHAKESPEARE? A PLAYWRIGHT’S PERSPECTIVE

ON THE WORKING WILLat the Pilot Point Opera House

The world is celebrating the 400th anniversary of the death of playwright and poet William Shakespeare and Pilot Point is joining the fanfare and fun with tea and soda pop with Shakespeare? This is based on a playwright’s perspective on the Working Will, presented by local author, playwright, and historian, S. A. Cranfill, with the theatrical help of a local youth ensemble.

For three Sunday afternoons in April, adult and student audiences can enjoy three different and entertaining explorations of Shakespeare as player, playwright, youth director, and businessman, served up family-friendly style with humor, history, dramatic antics, fascinating facts, and tea and soda pop!

Could we have had tea with Shakespeare? Attend the performance and find out. You may well be surprised! Were Will’s plays almost lost? Learn about the First Folio of 1623 and the men who saved Shakespeare for the world. How did his fellow actors and apprentices shape the plays he wrote? Did Will even care about publishing his plays? What was life like for an Elizabethan acting company? Did Will have a “youth theatre”? Why should we care about Shakespeare? Is Will’s English special in any way? What inspired Will’s plots? How original was Will? Did Will write musicals? Did Will write Will?

Join us for three afternoons and answer the questions for yourself! The three Sunday matinees will be at 3 p.m. on April 3, 17, and 24. Adult tickets are only $5, students only $2, with a family discount of $10 and a 10% teacher/class discount. Of course tea and soda pop will be available. You can’t go wrong at 380 Bar and Grill with a burger so juicy that you better go ahead and have extra napkins ready! Their fresh, cooked-to-order hamburgers are stacked tall on a pretzel bun served with your choice of sides and it is a definite crowd pleaser! They also offer 12 flavors of “bone in” or “bone out” jumbo chicken wings. The most popular are Luis Wings, perfectly coated in their uniquely spicy BBQ signature sauce. The sauce is so delicious patrons ask them to bottle it. “We want 380 Bar and Grill to be a place where people can come in and enjoy themselves while having a good meal,” says restauranteur, Linda Stevens.

A little over a year ago, Linda and Tommy Stevens purchased an existing grill, but knew they were going to have to change things up to better suit their business plan, the surrounding neighborhoods and their personal restaurant goals. Rather than close the doors and make the changes all at once, they decided to make gradual changes. This smart transition has allowed them to make keen choices and it is paying off. While still a work in progress, the transitions so far, besides the obvious name change, include the opening up of the former bar area to make the space more inviting and increased kitchen staff in order to expedite prep work so diners are served faster. “We always wanted to own a restaurant,” says Linda, a clever business woman who knows what she likes and how to get things done.

The Stevens retired after the sale of the property of their extremely successful body shop that specialized in recreational vehicles. After retirement, they decided to follow their dream of becoming restauranteurs, so when the grill in front of Savannah became available, they made the leap back into entrepreneurship. Due to the unfortunate online reviews from the former establishment, the Stevens knew they had to make a name change and do some housekeeping to get their dream going in the right direction. They knew getting the health score up was their highest priority, and that they did! The lowest score they have received since they purchased the restaurant is a 98, with the majority of the scores a 99. Once that was accomplished, they moved forward with their vision of fresh home-style cooking with limited pre-battered items on the menu. The Stevens wanted a Sports Grill f lare that was accommodating to families, singles and couples equally. “380 Bar and Grill is perfectly located. I have friends in Aubrey and Savannah and I live in Frisco, so it is a great place to meet to visit over dinner and a glass of wine,” says diner Diana Schafferner.

One nice thing about dining at 380 Bar and Grill is the presence of Linda and Tommy Stevens. They are interactive with their clients and hands on with their staff. They are always getting feedback and sometimes just striking up a friendly conversation. On Saturday nights, they have

Ladies night which has been very successful, and yes ladies, they have a very nice wine pour! Also, every Wednesday one kid eats free with each adult meal purchased and they have a brilliant balloon artist who can create almost anything the kids request. On Sunday and Tuesday nights, get your friends together for a game of poker. They have been hosting poker nights since an area resident requested it, and it has paid off in spades! They also offer regular entertainment including live music and karaoke. Also, they work with Right Time Delivery Service to provide their food hot and fresh to your door! There is a small delivery fee, but the convenience is well worth it.

Come in and visit Linda and Tommy Stevens at 380 Bar and Grill, located on the north side of Highway 380 just west of Savannah.

f you are an encyclopedia of extraordinary knowledge, an oracle of the obscure, or a connoisseur of contemporary culture, then don’t think about it, just sign up for Aubrey Area Library’s annual trivia night. Gather your learned league; there can be up to eight people on your team. The great

thing about trivia night is that anyone can enjoy it. Even if you are not the polymath of eccentric information, you can still be the reason your team wins! Sometimes, it comes down to just one or two right answers that separate the winners from the rest of the players. Your contributions can make all of the difference. Even if your team does not win, you will still have a great time at this annual think-off.

This year’s trivia night will be held on April 16th. You can start setting up your table decorations at 6:00 p.m. (tables and chairs are provided), team photos are taken at 6:45p.m., and the games begin at 6:55 p.m. Contestants can begin by getting their team together and calling (940-365-9162) or emailing ([email protected]) to reserve your spot. The Aubrey Area Library is located at 226 Countryside Drive, just off Highway 377.

Each year, the contestants are encouraged to decorate their tables. Over the years, competing teams have included Seven Hens and a Rooster, the Know-Nothings, Yellow Roses of Texas, Dog Gone, Book Smarts, and FiNews, just to name a few. The tables have been laden with libations and mounded with munchies. It is your table, so you can get as creative as you want to be. Contestants bring their own snacks and beverages to enhance their evening of friendly competition. “This is one of my favorite events in the area. It is an exciting way to spend an evening with friends and a great way to support your area library,” said Jodie Linton-Prickett, from the FiNews team.

The Aubrey Area Library looks forward to seeing you again and don’t forget to bring your table décor and thinking caps! If you would like more information, please contact the library at 940-365-9162.

Cornerstone Dental Associates of Crossroads take great pride on how they approach communicating dentistry to their patients. At Cornerstone they follow the principle Six D’s as explained below:

D-iscussion: At Cornerstone it is important for them to get to know their patients. By exploring what the patient is looking for in a dentist and understanding their treatment goals and expectations the patient gets the best possible care. They also discuss who they are a practice and are hopeful that they are the perfect fit for our patients. Their goal is to build a long term relationship.

D-ata: By gathering the necessary digital radiographs, and by charting the patient’s current condition including the teeth and periodontal/gum health and digital radiographs, digital photography, and by charting the patient’s condition of their teeth and periodontal/gum health, the team at Cornerstone can develop a foundation in which to build and communicate the patient’s current dental health condition. Cornerstone can provide optimal care.

6D’S OF DENTAL HEALTH COMMUNICATIONCORNERSTONE DENTAL ASSOCIATES

D-iscover: The team at Cornerstone wants their patients to see what they are seeing. By using the data, radiographs and photographs, they are able to provide a visual for their patients. This helps the patient understand why they are recommending the treatment and build value on the dentistry they provide. This ensures prime dental and overall health.

D-esign: Based on the discussion, data and discovery, Cornerstone designs a treatment plan for the patient they are comfortable with financially and feel confident in receiving treatment from them. For cosmetic dentistry and smile makeovers, Cornerstone can create simulations on the computer and stone models as well as pre design the smile to meet the patient’s expectations.

D-entistry: Ultimately, Cornerstone provides dentistry in a comfortable and pleasant manner. They want to make sure their patients have a positive and memorable experience.

D-eliver: Once the form of dentistry is delivered, they make sure they have reached the patient expectations from the initial discussion. The latter builds the long term trust and value they seek for the patient.

Cornerstone Dental Associates are excited to provide a wide range of dental services from sealants to tooth colored restorations, and from implant placement to smile makeovers. Make your dream smile a reality and call Cornerstone Dental Associates today!
