Inspiring Growth2014 ANNUAL REPORT for fiscal year 2013

Page 2: Annualreport july 30

-Jim GordonChairman of the Board

2013 has been a great year for our staff at the community foundation. We have been blessed to have so much support

from our volunteers, fund holders, and community members. When we reflect back it is humbling to realize all

that has taken place. We moved into a new office, upgraded our technology, launched our first Grow Green

Match Day, assisted the Fairy Godmothers reach record totals in their golf tournament, helped the Guardian

Angels get started with over 50 founding members, helped the YES! Fund Campaign break the $200,000 level

in giving, exceeded $1 million in grants for the first time, increased our assets by more than $7 million, etc.

We have so much to be thankful for and sincerely thank everyone for making the year a huge success. When I

personally look back on making the decision to join the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, I did so with

the intent to make a difference.

The community foundation has traditionally been a quiet yet meaningful partner in the community. It is our desire to enhance the community

awareness of what we do for people and the differences we make each and every day. Your community foundation operates on a 1% margin of

assets and our investment committee continues to manage the investment strategy to outpace our peers by more than 1%--leaving the net cost

to fund holders at $0. Our operating budget is less than $300,000—just over ½% for a cost of doing business for an organization with assets over

$45 million. Thus, the reason we are trying to get the word out about this community jewel called the Greater Manhattan Community Founda-

tion. It’s our staff’s desire to support all our community non-profits, fund holders and affiliates in such a way that they feel as if they have three

more staff members. We are here to serve—serve donors with their philanthropic decisions, serve fund holders with the management growth of

their resources, and serve non-profits with the financial needs of their programs. At the end of the day, we all make a difference if our community

resources are used in the most productive and meaningful way. And our staff is here to ensure that we meet this goal. I want to thank you for the

opportunity to serve as your President & CEO. We look forward to working with you to make a difference.

As Chairman of the Board for the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, I would like to thank everyone! Re-

ally, if you think about the awards shows on TV, it seems like the speeches go on and on, as the award winner

thanks everyone who comes to mind. As the 2014 Chairman, I cannot think of anything more important than

thanking everyone responsible for another record year. The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation began

as a dream just 15 years ago. A dream of connecting donors with the charities they believe in to make a differ-

ence. Our record of achievements in 2013 prove, beyond a doubt, that dreams do come true! As of December

31, 2013 assets exceeded $45 MILLION dollars. Assets are up 375% in just 4 years. Our growth from zero assets

in 1999 to over $45 million dollars today is truly remarkable.

We are proud of our growth, but the true credit goes to the visionary donors who have established funds at the foundation. Grants and program

expenditures have exceed ONE MILLION dollars for the first time. Grants and awards are up 275% in the same 4 year period. I would like to thank

our board members and committee volunteers for their tireless work this year. Our committees have stepped up on every occasion. From help-

ing out with the 1st Grow Green Match Day, to our record breaking grant awards, and we can’t forget the very impressive 1st Annual Community

Foundation Awards (CFAs). Our Foundation is blessed with a great staff. Vern, Marla and Elaine are a great team. We are very fortunate to have this

dedicated staff working for our Community! Last, but not least, thank you - our donors! You continue to amaze me with your ideas and commit-

ment to making a difference today and for future generations.

Types of FundsThe Community Foundation offers a variety of fund options to help you meet your philanthropic goals. From donor-advised funds (where you engage in active grantmaking recommendations) to unrestricted funds (which rely on the Foundation’s knowledge of community needs for grantmaking decisions), our funds allow you to choose your level of participation.

You can establish a fund using cash, securities, closely-held stock, mutual fund shares, real estate, business interests (limited part-nership shares, LLCs, etc.) and many other types of assets.

Donor Advised FundsDonor Advised Funds are charitable funds for thoses seeking active involvement in grantmaking. Fund holders – and their succes-sors, if desired – advise or recommend grants from their fund to support nonprofit organizations. Fund holders work with GMCF staff to create a lasting, impactful philanthropic legacy.

Field of Interest FundsField of Interest Funds are funds that have been established by the Community Foundation for granting to a broad area of interest rather than a single nonprofit organization in a particular field. Field of Interest Funds are also endowed funds, meaning that they will continue to make annual grants in perpetuity.

Scholarship FundsScholarship funds support those who want to pursue education, whether they're high school graduates pursuing a college degree, young athletes seeking assistance with additional training or nontraditional students who are returning to the work force. Fund holders work with Foundation staff to devise selection criteria.

Supporting OrganizationsSupporting organizations are separate legal entities that are affiliated with the Community Foundation. They are established with their own boards, grantmaking identities, and governance structures. Supporting organizations enjoy public charity status and the professional services of the foundation which includes staff and administrative support.

Unrestricted General Endowment FundsFund holders can support community needs by providing unrestricted support. You can create a named endowed fund where the foundation's board of directors will use the funds to address changing community needs. Unrestricted general endowed funds provide support for the Grants for Greater Manhattan and YIC Grants programs.

Designated FundsYou may wish to support a specific nonprofit organization. Once the fund is established, grants are made annually to the organiza-tion(s). Foundation staff monitor the organization to honor your philanthropic intentions. With a designated fund at the Community Foundation, you receive professional management and grant monitoring. Nonprofit Organizations can establish endowment funds to provide financial support to their organization in perpetuity and be a conduit for planned gifts. Designated Funds may also be established to benefit capital campaigns.

Fiscal sponsorship is a formal arrangement in which the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation as a 501(c)(3) public charity sponsors a project that may lack exempt status. This alternative to starting their own nonprofit allows organizations to seek grants and solicit tax-deductible donations under the foundation’s exempt status. In 2013 the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation served as fiscal sponsor for the following groups:

East Bridge Pier Project

Fairy Godmothers

Fieldhouse Project

Frankfort Development Trust

Girls on the Run of the Flint Hills

Guardian Angels

A supporting organization is a separate legal enti-

ty, with its own board, its own bylaws, etc. Howev-

er, it enjoys the status of a public charity due to its

close connection with The Community Foundation,

a connection that is similar to a subsidiary of a cor-

poration.

The Community Foundation elects the board of

directors of the supporting organiztion. As such,

it may be said that a supporting organization

operates under the Community Foundation’s

“umbrella.” Through a supporting organization,

donors receive the benefits and services of the

Foundation while maintaining a separate board

of directors that manages the organization’s

grantmaking, investments and other functions.

HOWE FAMILY FOUNDATION

The purpose of the Community Foundation of the Flint Hills

(CFFH) fund is to provide general support for our commu-

nity and was started in 2011 with a generous gift from Jack

and Joann Goldstein. Jack Goldstein is regarded as one of

the most successful entrepreneurs in Manhattan’s history.

When he passed in 2010, he left a legacy of charitable giv-

ing that outlives him by arranging for annual gifts to local

charities and non-profits.

In 2013 the Community Foundation of the Flint Hills made

grants totaling $160,000 providing support to Boys & Girls

Club Casino Night, Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids

Sake, Kansas State University Golf Course Research Foun-

dation, Kansas State University McCain Auditorium, USD

383 Foundation Flint Hills Summer Fun Camp, and the YES!

Fund for afterschool programs.

Guardian Angels Program Launched

*

The first annual GROW GREEN Match Day was held on Monday, April 22, 2013 in the Colony Square Atrium. Twenty-four endowed funds

of the foundation benefitted from a $40,000 matching pool. Total donations of $100,102.20 were collected from 309 donors, resulting in

more than $140,000 contributed to the day.

From the 95 donors who came through the lines in the first hour, to the last gift at 6:45 p.m., GROW GREEN Match Day was an overwhelm-

ing success! Twenty-four local nonprofits benefitted from the day. The $40,000 in match money was given by Phil and Margaret Howe to

encourage others in the community to support local causes. Their wonderful generosity makes a big difference for many in the Manhattan

area!

You make a gift.

We make it GROW.

1st Annual Grow Green Match Day

The Guardian Angels’ Funds of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation were established in 2013 and consists of an endowment

fund and an expendable grants fund. Patterned after the highly successful Fairy Godmothers program, small grants are made to meet the

immediate and critical needs of local men that are not met by traditional funding sources.

Members of the Guardian Angels share a strong commitment to continually increasing the endowment so men can lead lives filled with

promise and opportunity. Men of all professions are encouraged to participate and contribute to this worthy effort of “men helping men”.

To become a member please contact the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.
