Through your continued investment and support, the Mt. Hood Community College Foundation was once again able to achieve its mission of providing vital resources to the students, programs and priorities of MHCC. Thank you.
As you review this annual report, understand that your support is the strong foundation upon which all this good news is built. Without your direct financial contributions, your active participation at Foundation and college events, your commitment of time to read scholarship applications or volunteer your talents at the college, the Foundation could not enjoy the level of success it does. With that in mind, take a moment to recognize yourselves and your neighbors whose support of the Foundation, literally, changes lives.
Throughout the year, the Foundation was able to fund $261,511 in scholarships to motivated and deserving students. Additionally, the Foundation supported many college programs and capital projects at more than $278,890. The 2012 auction and dinner, The Power of the Dream, raised another $170,000 in support of student scholarships. These
are just a few of the highlights you’ll learn about in the pages that follow.
The Foundation board is comprised of community leaders who have very full personal and professional lives, in addition to the talent they commit to the college. That they find the time in their busy schedules to give of themselves and their resources is inspiring.
There is always room for more leadership, commitment and generosity. If, after reviewing our highlights, accomplish-ments and student stories, you choose to join us in support of the college, we would welcome your time and energy.
Best regards,
As we enter into the final half of the academic year and I commence my last few months as president of Mt. Hood Community College, I find myself reflecting upon the amazing energy that swirls throughout the college and realize that MHCC is an inspiring place to be and support.
Throughout the coming months, I will be journaling my in-sights and reflections for the next president. I will share my concerns for the future of public education and specifically for the fiscal stability of the college. I will add my recom-mendation that special attention be given to the condition of the physical plant and aging infrastructure, as the college approaches its 50th year serving students. I will also pass along the need to nurture one of the college’s greatest assets — the unwavering support of its Foundation.
Simply put, the MHCC Foundation, through leadership of its dedicated and dynamic board of directors, comprises the most robust and reliable source of community support
this college enjoys. Thanks to the Foundation, many MHCC students have had an opportunity to achieve their dreams. Your steadfast support of our programs and scholarships, along with your recurrent commitment to the annual dinner and auction, continues to bring in vital, empowering resources for the learning Saints among us.
All my best,
Thomas A. Perrick 2011-12 MHCC Foundation Board President

For Mariah Wright, a college education seemed out of reach.
While attending Sandy High School, she was diagnosed with a debilitating condition that caused extreme pain and fatigue. Unable to attend classes and earn her diploma, Wright completed her General Educational Development (GED) at MHCC. After her GED, she set her sights on a degree, but still faced a major challenge: how to pay for books and tuition at MHCC?
“I was overjoyed when I learned that I had won the Jeremy E. Christensen Memorial Scholarship,” Wright says. “I couldn’t believe someone cared enough to support my college education.”
At age 12, Jeremy was hit by a car,
which caused him to fall far behind in school during his recovery. After earn-ing a GED at MHCC, he enlisted in the military and was tragically killed in the line of duty in 2004.
With the assistance of the Jeremy E. Christensen Memorial Scholarship, Wright completed her program at MHCC and is now enrolled at Portland State University where she is working toward bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology and philosophy.
“Jeremy and I share similar paths,” Wright says. “He couldn’t complete high school after he was hit by a car,
and I couldn’t finish because I was very sick. We both got our GEDs at MHCC.”
In the future, Wright plans to support the MHCC Foundation in order to lend a hand to students such as herself and give them the same opportunities to attend college.
“I am incredibly grateful to the family of Jeremy Christensen, especially his grandmother, Jan Entenmann, who established this scholarship in Jeremy’s memory. Her generosity has made it
possible for me to attend college and make a better life for myself. I would also like to thank the Foundation for believing in me and awarding me this scholarship.”

MHCC, City of Portland Offer Future Connect Student ScholarshipsMt. Hood Community College is pleased to announce its participation in Future Connect, a new scholarship program sponsored by MHCC and the City of Portland.
Future Connect provides qualifying in-district students with money for college, job and internship resources and a coach to help navigate the path to success. The program is open to a limited number of recent high school graduates or recent GED completers within Multnomah County who have not yet begun college.
Ten students are currently enrolled in the program. Applications for the 2013-14 academic year will be accepted in spring 2013.

“She loved MHCC
and looked for opportunities to
support those who needed a little boost to make
progress toward their own goals”
— William Miller ASG President
Taylur DeWolf
ASG LEADERS HONOR ONE OF THEIR OWN Taylur DeWolf made a big impact in her short life.
Tragically, Taylur suffered a fatal accident while snowboarding Jan. 27, 2012 on Mount Hood.
The 17-year-old first-year MHCC student tutored elementary school kids and was active in her church. In 2010, she received the Silver Award, the second highest hon-or given by the Girl Scouts. The following year, she won the grand prize in Fujifilm’s photojournalism and fundraising contest by chronicling the building of a veterans’ home in Sandy, Ore.
At MHCC, where she began her journey to become a biochemist, Taylur was a key component of Associated Student Government (ASG), where she made dozens of friends and worked to make things better for her fellow students.
“The entire MHCC community was devas-tated by her passing,” says William Miller, ASG president. He describes his friend and colleague as one of those great individuals who genuinely cared about everybody, had a heart to serve others and could find the silver lining in any situation.
It’s fitting that ASG decided to form a legacy scholarship to honor Taylur.
“She loved MHCC and looked for opportunities to support those who needed a little boost to progress toward their own goals,” says Miller.
Her father, Harry DeWolf, agrees. “Taylur’s life continues to inspire thousands of people in a positive way, especially youth. She would want those with dreams to work hard toward achieving them, no matter the obstacle. Our family is very touched that ASG leadership created this scholarship in Taylur’s name.”
MT. HOOD COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2011–12 ANNUAL REPORT
Boeing Portland donated a milling ma-chine to MHCC, enabling Machine Tool Technology students to learn on the type of high-speed, cutting-edge equipment used in many industrial settings.
Using a sophisticated computer to control the removal of metal with high-speed cutters, the equipment produces metal parts with very high precision and at a very fast rate. A rigging crew from Omega Morgan, a company special-izing in large-scale moving operations, donated their services to move and set up the equipment.
“This state-of-the-art milling machine brings true high-production capability to
our Machine Tool program,” says Den-nis Mattoon, dean of MHCC’s Indus-trial Technology and Apprenticeship programs. “It allows us to train our students on equipment they are likely to encounter in the aerospace and power generation industries.”
The milling machine is the latest in Boeing’s longtime support of the col-lege. In fact, it would take a Boeing 777 to hold mention of all the collabora-tions, partnerships and donations that the company has participated in over the years. Thanks to Boeing, many stu-dents have been able to achieve their dreams.

Boeing Donation Helps Students to Train on State-of-the-Art Equipment
Vivian Murhammer was presented posthumously with the Patron Saint award in June by Dave Shields, MHCC District Board chair.
Several years ago, Vivian spoke with a student in the Transitions program who had persevered to overcome great odds in pursuit of a college education. Vivian was impressed by the student’s story and wanted to do all she could to give these hard-working students a helping hand. In fact, she was so impressed, she made a sizable donation to the Transitions program in 2006 and the program received another generous donation this year through her estate.
Sadly, Vivian passed away Feb. 16, 2012, preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Raymond Murhammer. At the time of her initial donation, she said, “I know Raymond would have been delighted with my donations, he was a wonderful man.”
And, MHCC and the Foundation know that Vivian was a wonderful woman! Both Murhammers were firm believers in the power of education and the great opportunities a degree or certificate can bring to one’s life and career.
‘PATRON SAINT’ HELPED STUDENTS IN TRANSITION
Twenty years ago, while working at a bank, a robber pointed a gun at Sule Whitlock’s head and screamed at her to unlock the vault. Shaking uncontrollably, she tried desperately to insert the key while he commanded her to calm down. When she finally managed to open the door, he grabbed the money and fled. She sank to the floor, sobbing.
Those 90 seconds will forever be etched into her memory. That experience transformed her safe, rosy view of the world and left her with debilitating fear and anxiety.
Instead of continuing to live in fear, she resolved to work hard to regain her life. “I owe a debt of gratitude to the counsel-ors who helped me change my outlook and plan my future,” says Whitlock. “I
now dream of becoming a social worker so I can care for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder or patients and families in hospice, or others who are suffering from life’s many challenges. I want to be able to help others, just as I have been helped.”
She says that many people will be in her heart when she graduates from college, including the people in MHCC’s Transi-tions program. “I had been out of the classroom for 25 years and didn’t know how I would perform academically. It was all very foreign to me,” says the widow and mother of two.
“Even though every day is a struggle to balance college, family and finances, the Transitions program has given me the tools and determination to succeed. I am
so grateful for their guidance. Thanks to Transitions, I am on the road to fulfilling my dreams,” says Whitlock.
She is also grateful for the financial assistance she has received at MHCC and says, “Scholarships mean the world to me — not just because they enable me to stay in college, but because they serve as a daily reminder that people believe in me. I gain strength in knowing that others are pulling for me to succeed, including my wonderful instructors and advisers at MHCC, and donors who are making such a positive change in people’s lives.”

The overhead lights dimmed as MHCC choir members silently filed into the
room. The soloist, Kaitlyn Cooley, began singing “The Power of the Dream,” accompanied by Hailey Rowden.
Such was one of many highlights at the 40th annual Foundation auction and dinner, May 19 at the Portland Waterfront Marriott. The theme was Power of the Dream – Inspiring Students to Reach for the Stars. And, this truly stellar evening did just that – raising more than $170,000.
Another highlight of the evening was the premier screening of a video created by Gradient Productions, a multimedia company comprised mostly of former students from MHCC’s Integrated Media program. The video captures the triumphs and hopes of MHCC students. Shot entirely on the Gresham campus, the video includes students, alumni and an original song, recorded in the MHCC studio, also named “The Power of the Dream.” The song features instrumentals and vocals contributed by students, supporting the powerful vocals of the duo, Harmony & the Him. The song is now available on iTunes with all proceeds going to the MHCC Foundation.

When Kaarin Powell was younger, she dreamed of becoming a doctor and healing people. Instead, she found herself putting her husband through law school, followed by a career as a stay-at-home mother of four.
A divorce in her thirties threw Powell for the proverbial loop. She had some college education, but no real marketable skills. How would she support her family? What kind of career could she attain? Where should she start?
Powell credits a scholarship for putting her dreams within reach. She received the Margaret Lorain Scholarship, which funds two full years of tuition, fees and books for a Transitions graduate at MHCC. It was established in memory of Margaret Lorain and is intended
to support a student who is attempting to make a significant life change. It memorializes a woman who changed her own life, and in doing so, the lives of others.
Lorain, a single parent herself, knew a college education was the key to overcoming obstacles and achieving a better life for her family. For 30 years, she was a teacher, friend and mentor to students and adults. Her son, Pete Lorain and his wife Jan, established this generous scholarship at MHCC after she passed away in 2000.
With Powell’s dream of working in the medical field rekindled out of necessity and life circumstance, she is now taking prerequisite classes at MHCC and volunteering with a local
fire department. She plans to enter either the Respiratory Care or Surgical Technology program because she believes that either would provide a means to support her children, ages 5 through 14, as well as feed her passion to help people.
Powell says two MHCC programs were especially helpful: Transitions, which helps displaced single parents and homemakers, and TRIO Student Support Services, which supports qualifying students in their efforts to earn a college degree. Like Powell, students in these programs are motivated to succeed. All they need is someone to believe in them.

Marv Ogle’s commitment to Mt. Hood Community College stretches back to 1964, when he was one of the original signers of the petition that would help establish the MHCC education district.
In the years since, Mt. Hood Community College has served more than one million students, thanks to Marv and many other dedicated suppporters.
Sadly, Marv passed away April 24, 2012, a devastating loss for his family and friends, and the MHCC Foundation.
Over the years, he made a difference in countless lives at the college and throughout the community. As a
Foundation board member and college supporter, he helped generations of MHCC students discover their strengths and passions, set their goals and achieve their dreams.
Our dear friend has done so many selfless things throughout the years and we will miss him immensely.

starting the college – we had the
feeling we were doing something
important.”

Dear Jim Weston Scholarship Donor,
I would like to thank you very much for selecting me as the recipient of the Jim Weston Scholarship. I have wanted to further my education in the automotive industry ever since I started my junior year of high school three years ago. Ford ASSET has turned out to be just what I was looking for. I have all the tools and equipment needed to meet my needs for learning every area of automotive, not to mention the added knowledge I gain from my instructor, Jerry Lyons.
I have found that the tuition, books, tools and travel expenses are a lot to pay for. I just got married in March and with that comes even more bills,
but it is all worth it. I work hard at my sponsoring dealership and enjoy going to work every day. With this scholarship I feel like I can relax with the knowledge that part of this year’s schooling will be taken care of.
I have been earning great grades in Ford class as well as in my core classes. I plan to get the most out of MHCC and learn as much as possible. Thank you again for choosing me as your recipient and I can assure you I will use this scholarship for which it was created.
Sincerely,
Leighton Nylund
