Welcome To Annunciation Parish!
Uniting The Catholic Community of Newington, Established June 29, 2017
If you are new to our parish or if you have been away from the practice of the faith, we extend a warm welcome and
hope you feel at home here. Our parish is nourished by your presence today. We invite you to introduce yourself to
the priest or deacon after Mass so that we can greet you. We hope you will make Annunciation Parish YOUR
parish.
All children are welcome to be baptized in the Catholic Church. It does not matter if the parents are single or
married outside the Catholic Church. ALL CHILDREN no matter what, are welcome to the baptism of the Lord, as
long as they will be raised Catholic. Annunciation Parish usually offers baptisms on the first and third Sundays. To
get started, please call the parish office - Saint Mary (860-666-1591) or Holy Spirit (860-666-5671). We can’t wait
to welcome your child into the life of Christ and our Church through Baptism.

Readings for the Week of July 29, 2018
First Reading: II Kings 4:42-44
Here Elisha uses his extraordinary power to multiply twenty loaves to feed one
hundred people. This is an obvious preparation for Our Lord’s New Testament
miracle. Note how the servant at first doubts Elisha.
Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6
Paul, having attained a powerful authority of witness from his imprisonment,
outlines the necessary virtues needed in the community in order to maintain its
unity in Christ.
Gospel: John 6:1-15
The well-known miraculous feeding story hints strongly of the Eucharist yet to
come. We note that Philip is mainly worried about the cost of bread, and
Andrew has doubt about Our Lord’s ability, as did the servant of Elisha. The
crowd of well-fed witnesses misunderstands Jesus’ kingship mission.
Daly Notes…
A few things…
First, Father Bock continues to grow stronger everyday. He is very grateful for your prayers
and cards. Last week, a supervisor of the rehab facility told me that Father Bock receives more
visitors than anyone else. In addition to his therapy, Father really needs rest, so please, no
visitors. We will continue to keep you posted on how he is doing.
Deacon Jim Sheils has informed us that he has decided to step away from active ministry. We
are grateful for all that he has done over the years, but no one retires from offering his or her
life to Christ. Deacon Jim was ordained on December 11, 1977 and came to Newington in
August 1998. It is amazing to think of the numbers of babies he has baptized over the years.
We will have a day to properly thank Deacon Jim in September.
Next weekend marks the end of Deacon Anthony’s summer assignment with us. After a short
vacation, he will return to Theological College to complete his final year of studies. Deacon
Anthony has certainly gained a lot of pastoral experience this summer. He assisted the priests
at Mass, preached at weekend Masses, and often during daily Mass. As a deacon, he also
presided at baptisms, funeral services and many rites of committal. In addition, Anthony spoke
at a couple of Catholic Schools, a confirmation group, and recently shared his vocation story
with a group of young adults at a brewery in Branford. We are going to miss him when he goes
back to school, but the plan is for him to return to Newington at Thanksgiving, Christmas and
during his spring break. Sadly, he won’t be here for the World Series.

Saint Alphonsus Marie Liguori, August 1st
Although Alphonsus Liguori holds many notable titles – Bishop, Doctor of
the Church, and founder of the Redemptorist Congregation – his story is
also one of disappointment, betrayal, chronic health issues and most
importantly, the triumph of a soul fully trusting in the Lord.
The oldest of seven in a pious Italian family, Alphonsus was a gifted
intellectual who had earned a doctorate and was practicing law before he
was twenty. The emptiness of secular life and a later vision moved him to
consecrate himself to God as a priest, in spite of his family’s objections.
Writing and preaching consumed most of his work as a priest, until in his mid-thirties he
started his own order, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Although this first order
ended in failure, he later successfully started and grew two Redemptorist orders, one each for
men and women.
He was eventually forced by papal command to accept the role of Bishop for a small Neapolitan
diocese, where he worked for 13 years to educate and feed the poor, reorganized the seminary
and taught theology. It was during this time that he suffered increasingly from rheumatism,
and was even paralyzed for over a year during a terrible bought of rheumatic fever. Adding
insult to injury, he was tricked into signing a decree of submission for his Redemptorist
congregation, which altered the original rule and left Alphonsus without any authority in his
own order.
The stress of betrayal and chronic health issues led Alphonsus into depression. Through
fervent prayer and trust in God he overcame depression and continued to lead a holy life
experiencing visions and performing miracles until he died peacefully at age 91. His writings
show the depth of his intellect and his love for God, and are still popular today in works such
as The Glories of Mary.
Saint Mary Flower Committee
In an effort to keep our church grounds
beautiful, please don’t walk on the grass
when entering and exiting the church
building. We would like to re-grow the
grass in the paths that have been worn
down. And also, please don’t leave your
cigarette butts on the church grounds.
Thank you so much for your help!
