I magine you’ve spent an incredible three years with your best friend. Then

one day, everything changes. He tells you that he is going to leave you and won’t be coming back. He gives you ad-vice on how to live without him, reas-sures you of his love, then disappears. How would you feel? The pain would al-most be unbearable. That seems to be the exact situation the disciples of Jesus faced in today’s Gospel reading. Can you imagine how difficult this situation was for them to see Jesus ascend to heaven and how confusing their task ahead appeared to be?

And yet, Jesus promised them—and he promises us all—that he would never abandon us. Though he ascended to the Father in heaven, Jesus does not leave his disciples alone. He gives all Chris-tians his Holy Spirit, to be our guide and eternal friend. Moreover, he shows them what their reward will be if they remain faithful. Just as Jesus ascends to the Fa-ther, so too will we fully enter into God’s life if we remain faithful to his promises.

1 st Reading Reflection ~ Acts 1:1-11 ~

It is a rare thing in the Liturgy when our first reading and the Gospel reading re-count the same event. In the case of this important Solemnity of the Ascension, it

happens because the author of both ac-counts is the evangelist Luke who uses this event as the culminating event of his Gospel and the opening event of his “Acts of the Apostles,” which is the se-quel, we might say, of the former. Jesus’ being “taken up” is an event that is full of significance because it indicates visually to Jesus’ followers—in the manner of a burnt offering of the Old Testament Tem-ple regime—that the offering of Christ has been accepted by the Father.

It also indicates that Jesus is now seated at the “right hand of the Father,” as we say in the Creed, meaning that he is at that critical place of influence. (The right hand of the king was the hand of power and judgment, and the person at his right hand could “stay his hand” or recom-mend leniency in judgment.) From this place, at the end of time, the Lord Jesus “will return in the same way as you have seen him going,” as the angel tells the disciples who were assembled at his As-cension. Until that time, the Church’s charge is to spread from “Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In this “last hour,” this final age of the world that is the time of the Church (CCC 670), we are not to busy ourselves looking at the sky for his return, but in spreading his kingdom.

Mass Schedule Continued: Friday, June 14th 8:30 a.m. Communion Service RIP Don Norton Parish Council Election Results: Congratulations to our newly-elected Parish Council members: Rita Luna, Charles, Ngo, Carol Opbroek and Leticia Carbajal. They will be commissioned at today’s 10:30 a.m. Mass. We thank all who were willing to serve our community! “His Nesting Place” Speaker Here This Weekend: His Nesting Place, a Christ-centered pro-life maternity home in Long Beach, help-ing women transform their lives through the Word of God, is speaking at all Masses this weekend. Founded in 1983 by Dr. Al and Judy Howard, His Nesting Place has given over 8,000 pregnant women and their children a place to come home when they find themselves without one. They will also be outside church where you can meet some of the mothers and their children, as well as offer a donation.

Priest Retirement Fund Collection Next Weekend: Next weekend, we will take up our annual collection for the Priest Retirement Fund. Your donation will help provide housing, medical assistance and many other vital services to priests who have dedicated their lives in the service of others. It will help Archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in their retirement. Please prayerfully consider this week what you might be able to contribute. Thank you.

Fr. Callanan’s Ordination Anniversary Surprise: There are tables outside church with paper and pens for anyone wishing to write Father a brief note congratulating him on his ordination anniversary (or you can bring your own note). If you can help staff a table for 10 minutes following Mass, please stop by and volunteer. These notes will be put in a large envelope and mailed to him. Then, next Sunday, June 9th, the 10:30 a.m. Mass will be live-streamed so that Fr. Callanan can watch it from his quarters at Maryknoll. Just prior to Dismissal, everyone at that Mass will wish him a Happy Anniversary. This Mass will also be put up on our website. (If you do not wish to have you and/or your family filmed, you might consider attending a different Mass). This is a won-derful opportunity to let Fr. Callanan know how much he is loved and missed and all are invited to participate!

Fr. Eugene’s Retirement Gift: With Fr. Eugene’s rapidly approaching retirement, we’ve received a number of re-quests from parishioners regarding either a parish or a personal gift for him. We recently were informed by the Archdiocese that he will receive a stipend from them toward the purchase of a new car—monies meant primarily to cover insurance, taxes and other car buying-associated costs; but no funds for an actual purchase. Therefore, it seems fitting that the parish offer him what we can for a new (or at least “newer”) car. If you would like to contribute, you can place your gift in the col-lection, or bring it by the Parish Office during business hours. Please make your check payable to “Annunciation Church” and write “Fr. Eugene’s New Ride” in the memo section. This will be saved and presented to him following his retirement reception on Saturday, June 29th. Personal gifts are also fine and can be brought to the reception.

Prayer Chain Ministry: Walter Mitchell left us a great legacy with his Prayer Warrior Ministry, a system through which prayers for others were requested by sending him an e-mail, which he, in turn, forwarded to the Prayer Warriors on his list. Marie Nimmrich has gra-ciously volunteered to continue this ministry. If you would like to become a Prayer Warrior, you can e-mail her at: [email protected]. If you would like to re-quest prayers for someone, you can alert Marie with an e-mail and she will forward your request to the Warriors she has on her list. Prayer has proven time and time again to be a powerful means of healing. Walter’s spirit will be kept alive in our community and many will continue to benefit from this ministry. If you have any questions, please call Marie directly at (626 448-3304.

Did You Know? Parents can learn a lot about their children, and their children’s friends, sim-ply by keeping conversations going whenever possible--after school carpool, snack time, field trips, etc. Pay attention to any conversations that leave you feeling unsettled, and know when it’s important for you to speak up. For ex-ample, a child’s friend may tell you she doesn’t like her new history teacher, or he makes her feel uncomfortable. Even if you don’t know the teacher per-sonally, it is well worth communicating the concerns your child has to the school. It can be easier to pick up on levels of discomfort or unease in chil-dren rather than watching the adult in question. 2 nd Reading Reflection ~ Ephesians 1:17-23 ~

From the council of Jerusalem and the assembly of the apostles in the first reading, we move now to the heavenly Jerusalem whose foundations are the same: “the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” The proliferation of twelves in this reading (twelve gates, twelve an-gels, twelve courses of stones and twelve apostles) remind us that the Church—both of earth and heaven—means not an end to the twelve tribes of Israel, but the continuation of Israel. That was the issue that troubled the Church of the book of Acts. Is the Church something entirely new or is it just a continuation of the Jewish relig-ion? And, as we have seen, the an-swer is emphatically “Yes!” That is, it is entirely new with the newness of grace in Christ, and entirely in continuity with God’s plan from the beginning for Is-rael. So the ancient prayer of Israel, “let all the peoples praise thee!” (Psalm 67:5, RSV) is answered affirmatively by Jesus and the Church he founded, in which all the peoples now praise him.

In several verses from Acts 15 not part of our first reading, the Apostle James quotes three prophets of Israel in say-ing, “After this I will return, and I will rebuild the dwelling of David, which has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up, that the rest of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord” (Acts 15:16-18, RSV). Jesus is

the rebuilt dwelling of David who calls both Jew and Gentile by name and who, as “living stones,” builds them up “into a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:4-5). In its final, glorious form that spiritual house, the New Jerusalem, has no temple, “for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb.”

G ospel Reflection ~ Luke 24:46-53 ~

These are the final words of Luke’s Gospel. They celebrate the event we sacramentally recall and relive today in the Church and point us toward Pente-cost, but they also give us an important charge. In our first reading from Luke’s Acts, he adds the further detail from the event of the Ascension that Jesus commissioned his followers to “be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Our response to that impor-tant call to mission, to what we have come to call the New Evangelization in our own day, depends vitally upon our being “clothed with power from on high,” upon our drinking in of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promises us.

Note that the disciples are obedient to Jesus’ command to “stay in the city” and return to Jerusalem “with great joy” and are “continually in the temple praising God.” This is what we are charged to do too. We must constantly implore God’s grace for ourselves and his Church in the work of mission, which the Catechism calls a “requirement of the Church’s catholic-

ity.” In order for the Church to be the “Catholic [universal] Church” she needs the Spirit. Once “clothed with power from on high” we, too, will find the joy of those first apostles and the energy to do what we were born in Baptism to do: be “witnesses of these things” “to the ends of the earth!” .

AnnunciationChurch.FORMED.org

With friends or family, reflect on the following questions:

According to the presenter, what does it mean that Jesus ascended into heaven?

How is Jesus’ Ascension a message of good news for the disciples and Christ’s followers today?

P RAYER: Place yourself in the po-sition of one of Christ’s followers.

You’ve been with Jesus for forty days. Now he tells you it’s time for him to leave. You go out into the countryside and watch as he rises into the sky, and soon disappears. What sorts of emo-tions are you experiencing? Are you afraid? sad? Now recall that just before he left, he promised never to abandon you, and he assured you that help would soon come in the form of the Holy Spirit. Now how do you feel? What would you say to the people around you? As you walk back to the town, what might you talk about?

R ESOLUTION: Just as the disci-ples were given a great mission to

spread Christ’s kingdom to the ends of the earth, so too does each of us carry a unique mission through the power of the Holy Spirit. This week ask God to show you what this mission is in your life, and choose one small way that you can carry out your mission as a follower of Christ.

Xin

Ngài đừng để con lạc hướng giữa dòng đời xô đẩy. Chỉ nơi

Ngài con mới được an vui.
