Chapel Partitions

Our chapel partitions have arrived! The ideas and efforts of many parishioners went into the design and creation of the movable partition walls. Do you recognize the image? It is a picture of one of our stained glass windows from the former St. Ann Church on Johnston Street. You may or may not remember it because for some time it may have been blocked from view. FYI: We have all the windows from St. Ann Church stored in the basement of the school. Many of them are in disrepair, however. Thank you to all who helped with this project.

Dear Parish Family,

Life is always changing and everything, whether good or bad, will eventually come to an end. As we age, our bodies change. We have health problems, emotional problems, and spiritual problems. Nothing in this life remains the same; only God is unchanging and constant in His love at all times. In a parish from time to time a new pastor is appointed and the parish adapts to the new spiritual leader of the community.

In June 2006 I was fortunate enough to become the 20th pastor of the Catholic

community in Morgan County. This began as St. Ann and eventually joining with its mission, Holy Family, became Annunciation of the Lord. I fell in love with Annunciation of the Lord parish quickly because of the dedicated and committed parishioners. I could see from the start that the people here were strong in their faith and in their desire to serve God and one another.

In 2011 a small chapel was established for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. At this time we have adoration each week from Monday noon until Tuesday noon. My hope and desire is that this devotion will thrive and bear much fruit in the future. This has been a great blessing to the parish because we have come to realize that Jesus is the greatest blessing we could possibly have. If there were one thing I could encourage the parish to do it would be to expand the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; moving toward perpetual adoration.

In June 2018, after serving my second 6-year term as pastor, I will be stepping down and turning the parish over to the new pastor, Fr. Charles Merrill. I will then become the Associate Pastor of St. Francis Xavier in Birmingham. This year I am celebrating my 30

th Anniversary as a parish priest. During that time I have been

stationed in four parishes and I can honestly say that Annunciation of the Lord has been the most rewarding and the best parish community that I have encountered. I trust that you will give the same love and support to the new pastor as I take my leave.

Finally, I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers, and support. It is hard to leave you, but as I said in the beginning of this farewell note, change is inevitable and all of us have to adjust to it. Never say “No” to Jesus -- Just say “Yes” as Mary did.

Father Ray

P.S. “Smile God Loves YOU!”

The Foundation has again received a challenge from a donor who will match up to $10,000 in donations to the Foundation. Last week we received $1,478 toward our 2

nd $10,000 Challenge

Match that brings us to $55,386 (69%) toward our Goal of $80,000.

Thank you to all who have contributed to get us to this point. Let’s continue to pull together once again to help our children. Whatever amount you choose to give will be a great blessing to the school. Your gift to St. Ann Catholic School is tax deductible. Please make all checks payable to St. Ann’s Educational Foundation.

Parish Pastoral Plan

A summary of the status of our implementation efforts

As you may recall, in 2017 we identified nine major goals we desired to accomplish over the

next five years. These goals were further broken down, by various implementation teams, into

specific objectives or steps that needed to be accomplished to fully achieve these goals. I am happy

to report that since embarking on this renewal process in 2017, we have made excellent progress.

To accomplish all nine goals we identified 78 individual objectives. To date we have implemented or

begun to implement 40 of these objectives; this is approximately 51% of our objectives for the parish

and school.

Below is a set of pie charts for each major goal which visually depicts our status towards fully

implementing each goal. We welcome your interest and participation in implementing our Pastoral

Plan.

We want to thank everyone that has played a part in developing and/or implementing this plan.

The Homily

“Preach the word in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). The homily is an integral part of the Mass, reserved to priest celebrant himself, or entrusted by him “to a concelebrating priest or occasionally, according to circumstances to a deacon, but never to a lay person” (GIRM, art. 65). The homily may be an explanation of the Gospel, of the other Mass readings, or of the responsorial Psalm. It may call attention to other texts of the Mass or develop the feast or mystery being celebrated on a given day. The homily is “the Word in other words.”

The best preaching is prepared in silence. Before preaching the Word, the priest listens to it, repeats it, and allows it to germinate in his heart. The homily is a bridge in two ways. It connects the first part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, to the second part, the Liturgy of the Eucharist; and it connects the Mass to the rest of life. The homily sends God’s people, full of thanksgiving, into the Sacrifice of Christ renewed on the altar, and prepares them to go forth into a world hungry for goodness, beauty, and truth.

Today's readings present John the Baptist, someone called into servanthood while in the womb, as God using him in the fulfillment of His plans. You and I are no different. We, too, were called to serve the Lord from the time we were in the womb.
