On Friday, April 28, Anoka County will host a local Law Day open house event from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Anoka County Courthouse. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the ramp located on Jackson Street. Events will include Courthouse tours at 9:15 am, 10:45 am, 12:15 am, and 1:45 pm, along with a 12:00 pm Q&A session with district court judges and staff. There will be presentations on various criminal justice issues throughout the day, along with a K-9 unit demonstration at 1:00 pm by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. Volunteer attorneys will be providing legal assistance to members of the public free of charge. They will be able to address legal issues such as family law, child support conservatorship, debt collection, adult and juvenile expungment, evictions, warrants, and driver license reinstatement. Anoka County is part of the state’s Tenth Judicial District. This district includes the counties of Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright. Forty-five judges serve the district, which is the second largest of Minnesota’s 10 judicial districts. In 2016, more than 130,000 cases were filed in Tenth Judicial District courts. The idea of a national Law Day was conceived in 1957 by American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes. In 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day, and in 1961 Congress issued a joint resolution officially establishing May 1 as Law Day. State Senator Carolyn Laine was reappointed to the commission as well as James Guy; all three terms will run to March 2020. Tim Utz resigned from the commission recently and Jeff Diehm has also resigned. Diehm’s resignation was received by the city clerk the day of the meeting. Diehm, Rob Fiorendino and James Guy were absent from the meeting. The subject matter on the agenda was Chapter 2, Section 9 of the charter, which deals with vacancies on the city council. Williams connected the award to the “hot real estate” market he believes the city is currently experiencing. He said several houses in his neighborhood recently sold quickly, “before they could even get the sign up.” “When we won that award, I knew our house values were going to go up,” Williams said. No real estate market analysis information was provided to the council.
