PPRESIDENTRESIDENTSS MMESSAGEESSAGEJune 6 is the 21st Annual Exotic Sports CarShow and Concours d' Elegance atArapahoe Community College. There ismore information in this Newsletter and inthe previous issue. The purpose of thisarticle is to express the gratitude of RMRto Tom Scott who, with his wife Lynn, were the founders of this hugely successfulcharity event and have remained the con-tinued heart and soul of this endeavor forevery one of its 21 years. Many volunteershave also devoted hundreds of hours to theConcours and their efforts are also greatlyappreciated. But Tom Scott has been theglue that kept the event going and who hasrefused to accept less than a great car showfor a great charity. RMR has benefitedfrom its involvement in the Concours formany more years than I have been a mem-ber. Our efforts on behalf of Cerebral Palsyof Colorado have done a lot of good andhave been very gratefully received by thecharity and the children. Thank you Tomand Lynn. Support the Concours, you willfeel good about it and will see a terrific carshow.

RMR is on not just the national map, butthe world map for Porsche enthusiastsbecause of George and Sharon Maybee'sGmund West Event which will be held

again this year at the Maybee's home at12369 Levi Circle, Henderson, Coloradoon July 25, 2004. There is more informa-tion in this Newsletter, but George andSharon are too modest. They started thePorsche Tractor (Shlepper) registry and it isthe first in the world to the best of my

knowledge. The Gmund West event hasbeen featured in both Excellence andChristophorus both of which are publishedworld wide. The Maybee's replica of theGmund factory where the first Porscheswere constructed is, again to the best of myknowledge, the only such replica in theworld.

Representatives of Porsche AG and PCNAas well as Trustees of the 356 Registry willbe on hand at this years event. Prettyimpressive, I think. Typical of George andSharon, they didn't ask for RMR to put onthe event, they just did it with the help ofPorsche friends and invited the member-ship. Now this event has gotten so largethat volunteers are crucial for set-up onSaturday. Please contact Sharon at [email protected] to volunteer for Saturday andcome out to share the fun on Sunday. Whoknows, you could be the MichaelSchumacher of Schleppers.

MMEMBERSHIPEMBERSHIP MMESSAGESESSAGESWelcome to new and returning members! We're warming up for summer so we have lots of events coming up thismonth. I'd like to see all you ladies come out for Ladies Day driver education on June 19. Guys - send your wifes, sisters, mothers, significant others out in the car of their choice. This is a no-testosterone event that is very lowkey with lots of instructors. This is a great way to get the women in your life interested in track events. If you'venever done an event before and aren't sure how to sign up, what to bring, what to do when you get there, call theevent chair, registrar or any board member - we'd like to see you out there! Feel free to call me at (303)554-7464or email [email protected] with any questions, problems, or suggestions. Tamela

Rush to Rushmore, The Second Part ofthe Journey.

Finishing off the last section of a tourroute can be a real drag to get started. This is especially true when the odometerwill add over 1,000 miles in two days. You need to (quickly with radar detectorin place) drive to where the first half ofthe route planning ended. Then you beginto drive along likely candidate roads tak-ing copious notes and measurements, not-ing curvy roads, scenery and historic tid-bits. Well, that was the idea as Peggy andI left Denver early last Saturday morning.

We needed to go east to pick up the routein Bridgeport, Nebraska. We checked outthe tour's starting location at Panera's

Bread at Stapleton Plaza for scones andcoffee. Obviously, east means I-70, so wejumped on I-70 at Quebec and joined themorning travelers heading to DIA. AsTower Road flashed by I realized I-70 goesto Kansas, not Sterling, Colorado andNebraska. I missed I-76 from Quebecabout 1 mile from Stapleton. Off-coursenumber one.

A quick navigational adjustment and weget on E-470, the toll road, and I meanTOLL. How much can under a mile ofpavement cost anyway? Looking for theexit for I-76 East, we are quickly fooled bya sign meaning in part, "Exit here to payan extra toll," (actually it read: I-76 West, but in very small type). Which we did, before returning immediately to the roadand setting a speed that justified the tollexpense. The quiet hum of the smooth,high-speed pavement is soon broken as ourcar was smacked by a large bird. We pullback from the shoulder after an Audubonsalute, and exit onto I -76 over a nicelybanked turn to the right and, indeed, theroad heads NE towards Sterling as wehoped. Off-course number two.

I am glad to be out of the city at last, and itis time to let the car have its head, turn onthe cruise control and finish off breakfastwhile Peggy reads the Denver Post outloud. It must have been a rather large edi-tion for Saturday, for when she finishes thesports pages, we are sailing 20 miles pastour turn at Sterling. No problem, because we rally and tour planners havebrought our vast resource materials includ-ing the Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer.Unfortunately, the resources did notinclude a magnifying glass to find thosevery tiny, thin, grey roads marking sectionafter section of eastern Colorado farmland,so we wing it and jog through the brightgreen alfalfa and wheat fields. Off-coursenumber three, and we are not even out ofColorado!

We won't bore you with the details of theactual route we found up to Rapid Citythat Saturday, or the drive Sunday throughSpearfish Canyon, or the story of the 7Indian maidens and the bear that formedDevil's Tower in Wyoming. Several times,

we crossed the trail of General Custer's1874 expedition into the Black Hills in vio-lation of the Indian Treaty of 1868. Fansof the HBO hit series, Deadwood, willenjoy the drive down Main Street. Theyreally buried Wild Bill Hickock andCalamity Jane on the hill just out side oftown. Tragically, their resting place isjoined by the many children who passedfrom the epidemics during 1878-1880. Thecemetery is a fascinating place.

The tour is August 27, 28 and 29. We planto join the Porsche drivers from the DakotaRegion on Saturday, August 28 for a funrally, a wash and shine and personal tour atthe Crazy Horse Monument. The day endswith dinner at Mt. Rushmore Monumentfollowed by the lighting ceremony and thedrive back to Rapid City.

We have about 27 RMR cars signed up andonly a few spaces left for registration. Thecost of the event is $35.00 per car. In orderto be considered confirmed for this event,we must also receive confirmation that youhave reserved your hotel room for twonights: August 27 and August 28. We havereserved a block of rooms at the RushmorePlaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City. The hotel

is the "event headquarters" and our clubmembers will be joined there by PCAmembers from other regions who are par-ticipating in the Rushmore Tour. ThePorsche Club of America rates are as fol-lows:Standard room: single or double $100 King Leisure: single or double $100 King Executive: single or double $110 Plaza Suite: single or double $130 Please call the hotel at 605-348-4000 or 1-800-HOLIDAY to make your reservation. Please hurry to make your reservations asthe accommodations are limited. Once theblock of rooms we've reserved is gone, there are other rooms but they will be atthe hotel's prevailing rate. The tour is get-ting full, so please don't hesitate to makeyour plans today. August is closer than wethink, and the event planning will behelped with your early confirmation. My address for sending in your registrationform: Peggy Englert2391 Eudora Street Denver, CO 80207 Andy Forberg and I look forward to seeingyou at this exciting event in August!

Jim Fry

Despite ominous snowfall across much ofthe FrontRange thenight before, dawn arrivedwith brightsunshine atContinentalDivideRaceway onSaturday, May1. The greatweather per-sisted overboth days of the Challenge Series drivereducation event "Ride the Slide atContinental Divide" and provided idealconditions for running our Porsches.

Even though the concurrent PCAClub Race at Las Vegas drew awaymany of our most dedicated "trackjunkies", no less than seventy-threedrivers showed up to exercise theirPorsches at the challenging littletrack near Mead. At the driversmeeting on the first day it waslearned that about a third of thosepresent had never previously drivenat CDR. Fortunately, a good number ofthose present were driving instructors whowere able to show the "newbies" the tricks

of the track!

Things started out a little chancy on thefirst day when the drivers meeting was

drawing to a conclusion and the ambulance, which was supposed to arrive at 8:30 am,was still nowhere to be seen. A call to the

dispatcher yield-ed a report that"yes, our crewarrived at thetrack only to betold that we werenot needed". Itwas quicklydetermined thatthe ambulancehad been erro-neously sent toSecond Creek

Raceway where a BMW clubevent was underway! A quickturnaround and race up toContinental Divide took the ambulance andits crew about a half hour. The delay was

taken good-naturedly by those present andwas used to give everyone additional timeto get things checked, etc.

As those who have driven CDR know, thistrack, while a lot of fun, can be unforgiv-ing. No serious incidentsoccurred, although theDragon did bite one 944turbo and toss it out intothe swamp at the bottom ofthe Slide. Fortunately, noone was hurt and theDragon appeared to be sat-isfied for the rest of theweekend. Time runs onSunday afternoon wentwithout incident. KenyWhitright and TriciaMitchell had best times ofthe day.

The event was a success because of thewilling contributions of all the participants.

Even manyof the drivinginstructorsjumped intothe club truckto do cornerworkingduties for ashift or twowhen need-ed!Particularthanks go toDave andBob Speightsfor, among

many things, getting the club truck andequipment back and forth from SecondCreek; Norma Nada for registration; JacoDeMooy and Ed Shindel for organizingcorner workers; Bob Speights, PatNewman, Cecil Morris, and Tricia Mitchellfor working Control; David Rossiter forserving as Chief Driving Instructor; CraigLord and Randy Hoch for serving as Safetyofficers; Mary Ellen Hofmann for workingthe gate for long hours; Rex Heck, JeffMitchell, Jerry Hofmann, and Randy Hochfor doing tech inspections; Bob Speightsand Norma Nada for timing; Trish andAndy Labout for helping grid during timedruns; Grant Bayless for the photos, andKent Early for working as starter.
