Deputy Principal’s Message Tell Them From Me Student Survey

I am delighted that this term, students from Years 4, 5 & 6, like many other public schools in the state, will again participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students in Years 4, 5 & 6 also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours during weeks 9 and 10. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Partners in Learning—Parent feedback survey

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPad, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between in the next few weeks. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

A link to the survey will be sent via Skoolbag in the next few weeks.

The survey is available in 23 languages.

As you can see the preparation for building works at our school have commenced. The actual construction process is scheduled to begin in Term 1 of the 2019 school year. Construction and transition to the new building is scheduled to be completed by mid-2020. The school and Department of Education representatives, who are engaged for building works process are keen to ensure that building works run with as little disruption to children as possible. Safety of our children is paramount in this process. Key steps have been taken in this regard.

Firstly, the contractor awarded the contract for development must ensure that all workers onsite must gain permission before entering the site, avoid any contact with children unless planned or in emergency, use only approved toilets, are appropriately clothed and carry an identity card at all times. In addition to that, all workers need to report any concerns about safety of children to the school. If requested, the building contractor must ensure that all its workers provide written declaration that they do not have a history that may be of concern to the parents of school.

Page 5: ‘nothing left unattempted’ · The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPad, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to

Secondly, the contractor has to ensure they maintain health and safety accreditation during the entire construction process and submit a clear plan on how they will manage bad weather and airborne construction material during the building process.

As you can see the process of placing de-mountable classrooms within the fenced area has started. All utilities such as water, electricity and drainage will be prepared over the next few weeks and two new de-mountable classrooms will be prepared first. Following that, the existing de-mountable classrooms will be moved to the allocated fenced area.

Concern has been raised with the Department of Education and building project team regarding the removal of play equipment and response of the parent community to the lack of equipment for an extended period of time. They are looking into this as a priority and we will update the parent community as soon as we hear from them.

Information on the building works is available at the following government website -https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/w/west-ryde-public-school.html. Please provide any feedback you have at the information booths listed on the site as well as email address [email protected]

Love thy Neighbour

West Ryde is a beautiful suburb and our school sits right in the middle surrounded by many houses and apartments. With the increase in the number of the children in our school, our parking spaces are definitely reducing. The pickup and drop off are particularly busy times. It does not happen every day but sometimes unpleasant situations may arise. One of the residents near our school has approached us and mentioned that she was unable to get into her own driveway as there was a car double parked outside her house. She had to repeatedly request the owner to move his car. We understand and appreciate that we all need to pick our children on time but little adjustments can always be done. We have a beautiful community here at West Ryde Public School and I really request everyone to be considerate of the families living around us. I thank our parents’ community for their understanding in this matter.

There was a lot of excitement during the Monday morning assembly, when the Father’s day Raffle was drawn. We gave away 9 prizes and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and the businesses that came forward and donated generously. A special shout out to Taffa’s Mitre 10, Bunnings Rydalmere, Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club, Thommy Thai Smile(Jamaree and Joe Jeepetch), Taj Foods (Gautam Varma and Deepak Varma) Chris and Carol Williams and Neesha Khushalani. The P&C really cannot thank you enough for your generosity.

Mr. Hayllar was kind enough to draw the winners for us.
