    THE DAYBREAKOctober-November, 1922

    Bishop Remington to Eastern Oregon

The Hous 3 of Bishop3 , meeting in Portland, electedthe Rt. Rev. William Proctor Remington, D. D., Suf-

fragan Bishop of South Dakota, as missionary bishop

of the District of Eastern Oregon, succeeding Bishop

Robert L. Paddock, who had resigned. The electionwas unanimously ratified by the House of deputies.

Bishop Remington has accepted. When he will takeover the work of his district is not known.

Bishop Remington was elected as the firstsuffragan of a missionary district while rector

of St. Paul’s Church, Minneapolis, late in

1917, but following his consecration was grant-ed leave of absence to go overseas with theMinnesota Hospital unit as chaplain for ser-vice in the war. Returning from France atclose of war, he came at once to South Dakotaaud has, therefore, been in the field for near-ly four years.

Born in Philadelphia, March 13, 1879,Bishop Remington received his early educa-tion in private schools and graduated fromthe University of Pennsylvania in 1900.while in college he was one of the greatestof athletes, representing the university as ahurdler and broad jumper in the intercollegi-ates and being a member of the AmericanOlympic team in Paris in 1900. On his returnfrom Paris, he taught two years at the DelaneySchool, then entered the Virginia Theological

Seminary at Alexandria. On his graduation, with the degree of B. D., he returned to Phi-ladelphia aud was made a deacon BishopWhittaker at the Church of the Holy Trinityin 1905 and was priested the following year, becoming assistant to the rector, Rev. FloydW. Tompkins, until January 1907, when hebecame Vicar of the church of holy Commun ion

    .

Coming to St. Paul’s, Minneapolis, iu 1911,he succeeded the Rt. Rev. Theodore P. Thurs-ton, Bishop of Eastern Oklahoma. He soonbecame one of the leading figures in the dio-cese aud was appointed by Bishop Edsall tothe most important committees. It was dueto his splendid work in Minnesota that he waselected by the House of Bishops in 1917 to be-come the assistant of Bishop Burleson. Whenconsecrated on January 10, 1918, he was notonly the first missionary suffragan but alsoone of the youngest men ever called to theepiscopacy, being at his election only thirty-eight years old.

Bishop Remington and his wife visited SouthDakota in November of 1917 and with BishopBurleson weut over the district Then warduties called and he was gone for over a year. When he returned, he at once to South Dako-ta, establishing residence at Rapid City, hisduties lying largely west of the Missiouri river, where he was affectionately to be knownas “The Shepherd of the Hills.”

could to his work in the Rosebud. Shortlyafter coming to South Dakota, he married aConnecticut girl, who has been his charmingand devoted helper throughout the years cf hisministry, and together they have won a mostremarkable victory for the Church.

    In the Rosebud,

from literally nothingthere are four firmly organized missions andscores of scattered communicants, all receiv-ing the faithful aud regular ministrations ofthe Church, whose blessings reach into hun-dreds families. Down there if you were toask any man who is the one outstanding figurein what Horsley has called true religion, “thejoint advancement of the virtue and happinessof the people,” he would answer you immedi-ately— Blair Roberts.

This is the man, priest of the Church, deanof the Rosebud, leader and servant of men,

I who has been elected to succeed Bishop Rem-; ington as Suffragan Bishop of the District ofSouth Dakota. This is the man who nevergave a single thought to such possibility,

    j

whose whole life has been given, without stint' and without consideration of himself, to theservice which he has believed to be his job

1 and who could not even realize that which all, others knew to be a fact, that in his mightydeeds for the Church and for Christ ho had

    I

inspired a love and loyalty to himself that isone of the clearest proofs of his own greatworthiness.

It is not easy to write with restraint con-

    |

cerning a mau like Blair Roberts. One’sheart desires to frame into sentences feelings

    !

that cannot be expressed in words. Perhapsthat, after all, is the finest sort of tribute.

We know what South Dakota is goiug to dowith him as its Suffragan, but what is the Ro-sebud going to do without him! However, asSouth Dakota yields to the necessities of East-ern Oregon, the Rosebud must rejoice in giv-ing its own to South Dakota. Fortunate, in-deed, is the distiict.

In telegraphing the news of the election ofthe new Suffragan, Bishop Burleson said,“Everyone here happy in the choice.” Andthe words of the Bishop express exactly thefeelings of the whole district.

question being first on the examining chap-lain’s list. A divinity school near by expectsas soon as possible to pnt in a regular course

of study that would satify this bishop.—“ThePastoral Parson,” in The Rural New Yorker.

we immediately wired and wrote Dean Roberts, requesting his photograph and details of hislife, We desired them for Churchman. Wereceived a typical Blair Roberts letter, but henever so much as mentioned either photographor details of his life. Just as we expected, ofcourse, so we are not altogether unprepared. We use our own “private” photo and we knowsome of the things that he considers too unim-portant to mention.

William Blair Roberts was born about fortyyears ago in Connecticut. He is a graduate ofTrinity College and of Berkeley seminaryHe was ordained in 1907 aud came to SouthDakota, so that all his life in the ministry hasbeen given to service among those who tejoicein the honors which to him are but new re-sponsibilities. When the great wrar broke,he offered himself immediately and saw ser-vice as a chaplain in home camp and overseasuntil it was over, returning as soon Tas he

Fromevery homesteads you will see little black-eyed children peering out, and, if you smile, out they come to examine everything ycuhave and usually ask, ‘How old are you?’ or‘What o’clock is it? if they can speak English,“The children love these immense plains

and ride around perfectly fearless: in fact, al-most before they are able to walk well theycan stick on a pony. Some of them have togo long distances to church, so the parents

gather the family together on Saturday, very

often on Friday evening, and they start offfor church. The Indian makes a splendidChurchman and one who will not stay awayfrom church for snow, rain or frost.”

    The Bishop’s First Question

In the early summer a minister went to awestern bishop and asked if he could use himduring the summer months. The bishop wasmost delighted, being in great need of help,

but said he would Lave to ask him one ques-tion before they talked further. The minis-ter was quite aghast, not knowing whether hewas to be examined on the heresy of Tertul-lian or the irremissibility of post-baptismal

sin. But the question was, “Can you run aFord' car and make any ordinary repairs bythe wayside?” The minister could not, andthe qeal came to a sudden end.One wonders what Tertullian and a long

list after him would have thought of such a

A Lettler from the Suffragan- Elect

To the Clergy and Laity of the Church inSouth Dakota:As you all know, I was elected by the last

General Convention Stiffargan Bishop of South

Dakota to succeed Bishop Remington, whowas transferred to Eastern Oregon. As someof you may not know, I have accepted theelection, and am to be consecrated early inDecember in Calvary Cathedral, Sioux Fall.

I hesitated for several day before deciding

to accept the election, because the office is

such a high one, ane the demands of thework are so great; and 1 could not feel thatI am qualified to fill such an important postin the Church.

I was finally led to accept the election bythe great number of message from clergy, con-gregation, aud individual communicants allover the District, expressing complete satis-

faction with the action of General Convention,

and pledging hearty support to me if I couldsee my way clear to accept. And above all Iwas led by a growing feeling that it was acall,—a challenge,—from God. Aad that HeWho called me would surely sustain me, andby His Holy Spirit enable me to do the workwhich He has set before me.And so, conscious though I am that I fall

far short in every way of what a Bishopshould be

;humbled by the thought of the

splendid man who has been called to antherfield, and whose place I have been chosen totake

;realizing to the full the larger respon-

sibilities and high requirements which willbe placed upon me, I am going forward, pledging, not what I have, but wr hat I am,

heart, soul and body, to the Church, with thesimple prayer that what I have to offer may,by God’s grace, be so increased, that theChurch in South Dakota may become strongerbecause of my life and work.

I ask of yon first, to be patient with me,and in the second place to pary fore me. As1 am setting forth in faith and prayer will younot bear with me in faith and prayer likewise, realizing that God, Who is ever with HisChurch, can and will use our life-offering toHim to His great glory, and to the strength-ening and up-building of His body, cheChurch.
