NOTE

• If the File Not Found prompt appears, check to make sure you have loaded the Load File into the newly created directory indicated on the RPG Main Screen. If it complains about some other named file just ignore this by clicking on “Cancel” in the error popup. • PLGR + 96 software version 613-9868-008 is the preferred PLGR Operating System for the

Air Force if the hardware version will support it. For Army users, PLGR+96 software is only authorized if required to interface with Vector/Viper laser Rangefinders. However, the PLGR +96 software, due to its larger size, will only “fit” in Baseline 3 and above PLGR/EPLGR hardware version. The Reprogramming software utility on this CD will query each PLGR being programmed to determine its hardware capacity or baseline. It will then automatically install the correct software based on the hardware type. As a user, here’s all you need to do to safely load the correct software on all your PLGRs:

• After starting RPG, Click on the File Menu, and choose “Select Program File” from the RPG File menu.

• Click on the drop down menu for “File of type” and select “ Encrypted Load Files”. • Go to either the “load-EPLGR” or “load-PLGR +96” folder (per your requirement). Refer to Figure 8.

Page 10: AN/PSN 11 PRECISION LIGHTWEIGHT GPS RECEIVER · PDF fileENHANCED PRECISION LIGHTWEIGHT GPS RECEIVER (EPLGR) ... NSN 5825-01-374-6643 P/N 822-0077-002 ... 5.3 Special Tools, Fixtures,

10

FIGURE 8 Prompt that comes up when you double click on the program file box.

• Choose either “PLGR2.abe” or “PLGR3_4.abe” in the folder of your choice. (Either will work, RPG will select the correct file at load time). Click Open

11

• If the “load-EPLGR” folder is chosen, RPG will install software version 613-9544-101 in PLGRs of

Baseline 3 and above, and 613-9854-005 in baseline 2 units.

• If the “load-PLGR +96” folder is chosen, RPG will install 613-9868-008 in PLGRs of baseline 3 and above, and 613-9854-005 in baseline 2 units. • If the need arises to change your default load type (from EPLGR to PLGR +96 or the reverse), simply repeat steps 1 thru 4 above, and select the other folder.

NOTE

RPG will remember your choice the next time it’s run on the same computer. If you require the same software on all your PLGRs, there’s no need to re-select load files each time it’s run.

If the Red indicator in the communications box is not blinking after you turn the PLGR ON, select

another COM port. The COM port can be changed by selecting a different COM port from the COM port drop down menu.

• Turn on the PLGR by pressing the ‘ON’ key on the PLGR. A Red indicator should periodically blink next to

the ‘Rx’ in the Communications box on the RPG main screen. Refer to Figure 10.

• The TX indicator – Turns Red when the PC is sending data to the PLGR. • Time out Box – Contains a value that counts to zero. When it reaches zero a time-out has occurred.

(time is in SST, Where SS is Seconds and T is Tenths of seconds. Thus 90 seconds shows here as 900, 5 seconds as 50)

• The RX indicator – Turns Red when the PLGR is sending data to the PC.

• Port Selection Box – Allows the operator to select a port (to talk to the PLGR). Any available COM port on the PC can be used, provided Windows knows about it. See notes in paragraph 6m regarding COM ports.

(4) The load files text box. This allows the user to either type in the path to the load file or search for the file (by

double clicking on the text box). Refer to Figure 13.

(5) The GO/STOP button control. The face of this button will change from Go to Stop indicating its function. When the program is not busy, it will read “Go” indicating the operator should click on it to start the reprogramming process. When the program is busy, this button will read “stop” indicating the operator can stop the program by clicking here.

(6) The Percent Complete Gauge. This gauge will indicate the percent complete of the current activity. Current Activities are identified by the process controls in paragraph 6i (2).

(7) The Status Line. In this area the program will display informational and error messages. This area will always show the most recent message. Click the mouse in this region and a history panel will appear, showing all messages since the program was started.

j. What will I see when I run the program? (1) When the user clicks the “Go” button, several things happen. The button changes to a “Stop”, allowing the user to easily abort reprogramming. The data file selector grays out, indicating that the program will not accept input in this area while working. The communication block becomes active, with the “Tx” and “Rx” flashing for each message sent or received from the PLGR, and the timeout counting down each event. The process controls will each turn from gray to red to indicate it is in work, and from red to green to indicate completion.

TABLE 5 RPG Communications Blocks Message Meaning Re-Opening Communications Port The Port is opened to establish communication with the PLGR. Reading HPREPROG. ABS Reading the loader program from disk. This is a “bootstrap” program

that takes over control of the PLGR and allows the remainder of the process to run.

Transmitting loader program. The loader program is sent to the PLGR. Turn Unit On. This is your cue to turn the unit on. IMPORTANT: At this time, the TX

light should be flashing 2-5 times a second. If it is not, there are too many other windows programs running, slowing down the PC. If the PLGR is on at this point or the TX light is not flashing fast enough, the message TURN UNIT OFF will appear. Even though the display may be blank it still may be on. Press the PLGRs OFF button a few times. Then turn the unit back on.

Transmitting reprogrammer program

The reprogrammer file is sent to the PLGR. This file manages the PLGR end of the software loading process.

Reading unit's hardware information and erasing PROMs.

PLGR reports its hardware version to RPG, then begins erasing memory. This can take up to 90 seconds. If it takes longer, RPG will abort with a timeout error.

Reading: A:\PLGR3_4. ABE RPG is reading the load file from the floppy disk. This is done once per session. The file name will be PLGR2. ABE for Baseline 2 PLGRs, PLGR3_4. ABE for Baseline 3&4 PLGRs.

1611 records read into memory Report of total number of records in the .ABE file (information only). This is an indication that RPG is done reading the xxxx.ABE file

Transmitting program The contents of the xxxx.ABE file are sent to the PLGR. Restarting Receiver Information only- RPG restarts the unit with the new software. Watch

the PLGR display as it restarts to verify the new software version.

Reprogramming time: 6 Minutes 22 Seconds.

Informational message; total time will vary, but typically takes from 4 to 6 minutes. Because of the time required to read the xxxx.ABE file from the floppy, the first unit programmed will take about 2 minutes longer than normal.

k. Notes and Troubleshooting In the event of an error, RPG will provide an error message. The most recent of these is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the RPG window. In addition, a complete history can be obtained by clicking on the status bar (or by selecting Action/show Status Log from the menu). Refer to RPG.HLP file for information on these error messages and recommended actions to take when they are encountered. As further help, refer to paragraph l and m below.

l. Hardware problems: When things do not work right, the first thing to check is the hardware. Ensure all connections are well seated, including P1-P4 on the reprogramming cable. Ensure the AC adapter is plugged into the wall and the outlet has power. If all indications are normal but error messages indicate bad hardware, check the AC adapter and cable as follows.

Page 19: AN/PSN 11 PRECISION LIGHTWEIGHT GPS RECEIVER · PDF fileENHANCED PRECISION LIGHTWEIGHT GPS RECEIVER (EPLGR) ... NSN 5825-01-374-6643 P/N 822-0077-002 ... 5.3 Special Tools, Fixtures,

m. Serial Port problems: If RPG error messages indicate a problem with the serial port, check the following: Ensure the serial port selected in RPG is actually the port the cable is plugged into (on some computers, serial port identification is difficult). When in doubt, experiment; try each available port in RPG in turn.

Other possible problems: (1) Another program is using the serial port. Normally this will cause an error message (“Communication Port is in use”, “Communication Port not present”), but there is a possibility that it would not. Shut down any programs or utilities that may use a serial port (it is preferable to run RPG by itself, to minimize the possibility of conflicts or timeouts). (2) If the mouse is on a serial port, it could be interfering with communications. On most PCs, COM1 shares an Interrupt Request (IRQ) with COM3, and COM2 shares an IRQ with COM4 (an IRQ is the mechanism by which the serial port {and other things} “get the computer’s attention” to have their tasks done.) Since a mouse operates continuously, it can’t share an IRQ with anything else, including the reprogrammer. If your mouse is on COM1 or COM3, the reprogrammer must be on COM2 or COM4 If your mouse is on COM2 or COM4, the reprogrammer must be on COM1 or COM 3.

(3) If you only have one COM port and the mouse is using it (or if you only have COM1 and COM3), disable the mouse by disconnecting it and rebooting your computer. (Note-this will cause an error message when the mouse driver tries to load, but otherwise the computer should function normally). This will free up your serial port for use by the reprogrammer. See paragraph 6q, for instructions on operation of Windows and RPG without the use of a mouse.

(4) If the port selected is COM3 or COM4, there may be a problem in the Windows setup of this port. Try to verify the port is setup and working correctly by using another program to access that port (Windows Terminal will do). If the other program doesn’t work either, the problem is in the COM port or its setup n. Reprogramming Cable problems: If the reprogramming cable is accidentally removed from the PLGR or PC during reprogramming, the following action below must be taken. (1) Corrective action for reprogramming cable failure is to remove and replace the reprogramming cable from either the PC or PLGR serial port. Restart the RPG software and successfully reprogram the PLGR in accordance with instructions on page 9 of this TCTO/MWO.

• Exit Windows • Type “MSD” and press Enter. • Click on “IRQ Status” or press “Q” • Look in the “Description” column for the COM port you wish to use. Note the IRQ associated with it

in the “IRQ” column. Write this number down. • Click on “OK” (or press Enter) to go back to the main menu. • Click on “COM Ports” or press “C” • Note the port address for the COM port you wish to use. Write this number down. • Click on “OK” (or press Enter) to return to the main menu.

Figure 18 - Advanced COM port settings

• Press F3 to exit MSD • Restart Windows • Start Control Panel (normally located in the "Main" program group) • Choose “Ports” and select the port you wish to use. • Click on “Settings". • In the settings window, click on “Advanced”. The display will look like Figure 18. • Check that the port address and IRQ match the values found in MSD. • If they do not, change them to match, then click on “OK” • A message will be displayed telling you to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

Restart Windows and run RPG again.

o Saving user and Satellite data prior to reprogramming. As mentioned in the note under paragraph 5.3, the reprogramming process will erase all user and satellite data in the PLGR. If any of this data in a particular PLGR is critical, it must be saved by one of the methods below. These methods are listed in order of preference. NOTE: Crypto keys are not normally erased during reprogramming, so there is no need to re-key PLGRs.

(1) PLGR-PLGR data transfer: Items required:

• PLGR with data to be saved (referred to here as unit “A”) • One PLGR-PLGR cable (part no. 426-0141-020)-not supplied • One extra PLGR, with no user data stored. (referred to here as unit “B”)

Procedure: • Reprogram PLGR unit B normally • Attach PLGR-PLGR cable to PLGR unit B • Attach cable to PLGR unit A • On unit A, select “DATA-XFR” from the menu • Set data type to “All” • Select “Send” to transfer all user and satellite data to unit B • Unplug unit A from the PLGR-PLGR cable • Reprogram unit A normally • Reconnect unit A to the PLGR-PLGR cable • On unit B, select “DATA-XFR” from the menu. • Set data type to "All" • Select "send" to transfer data back to unit A.

This method will save all waypoints, user data, setup data, and satellite data (almanac, etc.) If there was a route defined, it becomes Route 1 (of 15) in the reprogrammed unit.
