OVER THE EDITOR'S DESK

"Ansearchin'" News

We hope your summer genealogical trips were successful. Many out-of-state subscribers visited our library on their way through Memphis. In fact, a non-subscriberfrom Concord, New Hampshire, came to the library looking for information about hisancestor who had lived in Fayette County, Tennessee, during the 1830-1860s and CrossCounty, Arkansas in the 1870s. Imagine my surprise - and delight - to learn we were"almost" cousins. Once again, we are reminded what a small world it often turns outto be in the search f'or forebears. Our subscribers are always welcome, but pleaseremember we are all unpaid volunteers, and the library is open only at certain times;currently Tuesday and Thursday, 10 am - 2 pm; the 2nd and 4th Monday evening, 6 - 9pm. The library is also closed from Thanksgiving until the first of January; pleasecall (901) 327-3273 to confirm "open" library hours.

This is our third 1991 issue, and we invite you to renew your subscription for 1992.A renewal/order form is enclosed for your convenience. The 1992 subscription rateis $20.00. Our printing expenses, postage and handling costs, etc have increasedsubstantially since our last rate adjustment in 1986. When you send your renewal, tell us what county records you need; we will publish them, if they are available tous. Also, when you send your free 1992 query, please submit it on a separate sheet, saying what you want to know in 50 words or less; be sure your name and address areon the query.

We received information about a Tirza Ann Dinsdale from Newport, Tennessee, who wasin Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, England during 1953, seeking information on hergrandfather, Edward Thompson, and his wife, Ann Brougham. Ann Brougham was born1826 in England. Peter B. Wyly has a complete file on 'Brougham', a registeredOne-Name study. Contact him for details at: P. B. The Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi was published in 1891 by theGoodspeed Publishing Company. In 1978 it was reprinted by The Reprint Company,Publishers, Spartanburg, SC 29304.

The abstracted biographies show some connection with Tennessee in the life of thesubject. Since they are abstracts and not complete quotes, the researcher shouldrefer to the original book for complete information.

On 13 Nov 1814 Elkanah, along with his brother-in-law Thomas Whitwell and otherDickson Countians, enlisted in Capt. Francis ELLIS' Company of Cocke's 2nd Regimentof Tennessee Militia. They marched to New Orleans where they participated underGeneral Andrew JACKSON in the battle with the British 8 Jan 1815. Elkanah was mortally wounded and died in New Orleans five days later. His widow Sarah Andersongave birth to a daughter, Sarah Jane Anderson on 17 Apr 1815. On 21 May 1815 Sarahappointed Francis Ellis her Power of Attorney to get her husband's military pay.She was still trying for the pay on 3 Apr 1816.

Sarah Anderson was living in Dickson County in 1820 and 1823 when her daughter Margaret married Pleasant Whitwell. Her daughter Hannah married Cooper B. LAND in1824. By 1830 Sarah, with her three youngest children, was living in Hickman Co TNnext to her son-in-law Pleasant Whitwell and near her son John M. Anderson who hadmarried Sarah Whitwell in 1825. John M. and Sarah named their first son, born 10May 1827, Elkanah Anderson; he was called "Kane." In Hickman County 1835 Sarah'sson Elkanah Anderson Jr. married Martha Jane SPURLOCK. Sarah also had a nephewnamed Elkanah Anderson, born 1815, the son of her sister Betsy Murray and John G.Anderson. He married Mariah DURNING 30 Mar 1837 but died in 1844.

CHARITY STANDEFER'S LETTERS AND MANUSCRIPTS - Contributed by Mrs. MaxineMusselwhite, 3053 Manhattan, Memphis, TN 38112

About 1818 Luke STANDEFER along with his wife Mary Ann (PRICE), their children andslaves left Franklin Co VA and moved to Sequatchie Co TN near Mt. Airy where hisbrother William Standefer already lived. William was a Representative in Washington, D.C. and their brother James Standefer Jr. was a Representative from HamiltonCounty, Tennessee.

In five to ten years after immigrating to Tennessee, Luke and Mary Ann moved toMonroe Co MS. While the family lived in Tennessee they were connected with a Methodist School. This may account for the family tradition that their daughter Charitywas a preacher and a missionary. The religious nature of her letters would confirmthis.

Charity's survlvlng manuscripts and letters date from 1813 to 1826, which werewritten by Charity and her former classmates. The Old Standefer Meeting House inSequatchie is mentioned often. Some of the names mentioned in the papers are:Judah, Judith, Kesiah, Sarah and William Standefer, John P. Blakeley, Mary Blakeley,

A 6-page letter written to the sisters Charity, Sarah and Kesiah from John P.Blakeley, Salem Post Office, W. Tennessee, Franklin Cty, August 17th 1826 reflectstheir religious fervor. "Dear Sisters in Christ, Having not forgotten the mutualpromise we made each other before we parted, viz, to keep up.a correspondence byletter; I again take up my pen ... The last one I got was signed by sister Charity, dated October 27th 1822. A performance this, truly worthy of its author, with whomI have spent some very agreeable moments in years past, and with whom I hope tospend an eternity of superlative enjoyment beyond the bounderies of this presentfluctuating scene. Another one dated December 26th 1821, signed by sister Sarah ...I still preserve these two omens of respect as sacred, and read and reread them withgreat delight ... Frequently in perusing these two excellent letters, my poor heartkindles into a flame, my eyes run over with tears of brotherly affection, while theycall fresh to my recollection the many times we have met together in Christian consort ...-In 1823, the first year I live,d here in Franklin ... It would be truly gratifying to me to keep up a religious correspondence with you according to our promise toeach other before we parted ...When I first moved here it was my intention to visityour country soon; but after forming an acquaintance here; and getting establishedin business, I became much better satisfied than at first. I have had good employin teaching for three years in succession in this place ... I have been very unfortunate in the way of property. I have lost several pretty good horses since I camehere, and it has kept me so behind in the world, that my constant application tobusiness has been necessary. I lost two very fine young horses this spring - withthe bots(?) I suppose. So that I have had but very little opportunity of travellingsince I have been living here. But if I live I intend to visit your country yet ...I have been twice in Sequachie since I moved from there ...my old classmates ... Someof them stand firm and unshaken in the faith; while others of them have grown coldin religion and become too worldly minded ... Brother Christians has moved to thewestern districk, or Forkedeer country ... My sister Mary is married and lives abouttwelve or thirteen miles from me ... Yours in Christian love,"

CORRECTION - In the Summer issue 1991, p.58, in the MITCHELL-NAVE BIBLE we statedthat George Nave was "born" Feb 1813 and that should have read died Feb 1813.

The miscellaneous loose papers provide additional information such as:land claims, unrecorded deeds, complaints, depositions, road petitions, estate inventories, appraisals and sales. The compiler also used data from the first court order book and her ownresearch to complete the information on that time periods. Besides the full name index there isa location index for mention of states and counties other than Livingston.

Sun and Brunswick, Shelby County, Tennessee by EllenFull name Index, 308 pp. Order from: The Plantation

38014. $30.00

This volume is both an interesting history of Shelby County and a valuable collection of genealogical data. It tells us of early Indian tribes and trails which later became today's roadsand streets. Accounts and pictures of both early and contemporary citizens are given, as wellas pictures of homes and churches. One chapter covers the Morning Sun and Pleasant Hill cemeteries, listing interments in alphabetical order, and another chapter is up-to-date describingthe Brunswick Homecoming 1986. Excellent genealogical material is included in the chaptergiving the origins of road names. Since Mrs. Rodgers' ancestors were early settlers of thisarea, much of the information is concerned with Davies Plantation, its history and environs.

Although Pope County was established from Gallatin and Johnson Counties in 1816, the compilersfound some marriage records in the front of Book "A", leading to the assumption of an earliermarriage book. The information in Volume I is set up in four columns with groom, bride, official and title, and date. If there was no return, it was so indicated. There are occasionally explanatory notes following the marriage records, usually Consents. A county map isincluded. Volume II is a continuation of Pope County Marriages, Volume I. An explanatorynote by the Pope County Court Clerk explains that up to 1878 only basic information on thebride and groom was required to obtain a marriage license, but beginning in 1878 the followinginformation was required: name and ages of bride and groom, residence, place of birth, namesof parents, race or color, number of times married, occupation of groom, location and date ofmarriage, witnesses and officiant.

According to the headingof one tax list, these lists include "inhabitants and others." Therefore, some of the nameswill be non-residents, although who they were is not listed as such. All taxpayers are listed by district or residence and date. In some cases additional information is included, suchas widow, orphan, guardian, son of, etc.

GENEALOGICAL CLASSIFICATION BY FAMILY GROUP CODING FOR DESCENT FROM COMMON ANCESTORS, Volume Iand Volume II by Cameron Ralph Stewart. 1986. Hard back, 6x9. Volume I 1028 pp; Volume II860 pp plus 363 pp Index. Order from author: P a Box 3011, Long Beach, CA 90803. $189.00 (set)

Ten ancestral families have been used to emphasize Mr. Stewart's unique method of classification. The family names are: Stewart, McAlester-McMaster, Sarles, Sharrard, Bentl(e)y, Shippee,Badgerow, Gjer(d)e-Trodo(-Traa), Miltzow, Osmundatter-Knutson. Basically, the author used thefirst two letters of each surname in his classification and follows with a series of letterdesignations relating to individuals in each of these families. Each line of each family isindicated by a Roman numeral. This is one of the most extensively documented family-orientedhistories in print. The detail is overwhelming, and the families listed are followed not onlyin America, but into early Europe as well. Numerous ancestral coats-of-arms, maps, portraitsand photographs from Norway, Scotland, Canada and the United States help to make the names andnumbers become individual personalities.

CERTIFICATE OF TENNESSEE ANCESTRY

In 1986 The Tennessee Genealogical Society began a program to recognize descendentsof our state's earliest settlers and to preserve their history. We have received recordson many Tennessee founders; publication of this material is planned. If you have anancestor who lived in Tennessee from early settlement through 1880, you are eligibleto participate in the Certificate Program. It is not necessary for you to be a member ofThe Tennessee Genealogical Society, and you do not need to live in Tennessee. You areonly reqUired to have an ancestor who lived in Tennessee. There are three categories:

Prior to Statehood (1796): Pioneer-Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry1797 to 1860: Settler-Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry1861 to 1880: Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry

Shown below is a reduced copy of the certificate. The 8.5 x 11 inch original is printedon ivory parchment with background illustrations in gray half-tone. Printing isblack highlighted by a gilt border. A shiny gold seal decorates the Settler certificatewith a ribbon added for the Pioneer certificate.

A $6.00 fee will offset certificate program expenses and administrative costs.Certificate applications and all submitted materials including supporting documentsbecome the property of The Tennessee Genealogical Society.
