What is the Transport Technology Industry? What jobs can you think of that would be part of the Transport Technology Industry? Why do you consider these jobs part of this industry?

Jobs in the Transport Technology Industry include design and engineering roles, traffic management, automobile and aviation mechanics. There are also many jobs in rail including construction, signalling and driving. Transport Technology Industries also require web developers, logistics managers and customer service representatives.

Activity 2:

WORKING IN AUTO MECHANICS

2a: Jordan: Vehicle Spray PainterHow did Jordan secure her job as a Vehicle Spray Painter?

Jordan undertook a Vehicle Spray Painting VET course in Year 10. After graduating Year 12 Jordan completed a pre-VET course (pre-apprenticeship) in Vehicle Spray Painting. Jordan undertook 5 weeks of work experience and was then offered a full-time apprenticeship.

Use www.joboutlook.gov.au and list three TAFEs in Victoria where you can study to work as a Vehicle Spray Painter

• Chisholm Institute – Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology• Gordon Institute – Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology • Kangan Institute – Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing TechnologySource: www.joboutlook.gov.au

What are some of Jordan’s personal qualities that impress her employer the most?

Jordan’s employer was impressed by Jordan’s dedication and ability to work as part of a team. He was inspired by how hard Jordan works and the passion she has for her job.

2b: Courtney: Auto MechanicWhat are some advantages of commencing a School Based Apprenticeship whilst still at school?

Students completing School Based Apprenticeships (SBAs) are able to learn about an occupation of their choice and decide if it is an area they would like to pursue further. Students complete SBAs while still studying at school, allowing them to earn a wage, train with an employer and work towards an accredited qualification while still completing a high school certificate.

Would you like to be an Auto Mechanic? Why or Why not?

Is a Plant Mechanic a job that you would consider in the future? Why or why not?

2d: Sarah: Electrical Fitter MechanicUsing the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways webpage (www.aapathways.com.au/job-hunting/steps), outline the four steps to searching and applying for an Australian Apprenticeship.

1. Research – Explore potential career options, the industries that best suit you, and resources to help identify your interests.

2. Preparation – Understand the benefits of doing an apprenticeship or traineeship, including potential financial incentives, wages, costs of training and job prospects.

3. Job Hunting – There are many ways to find an apprenticeship or traineeship job. Search for jobs online (employment sites/social media), through personal networks or Group Training Organsiations

4. Sign Up – Every Australian Apprentice must be signed up into a formal training contract as soon as they are employed.

• Cabinet Making• Metal Work• Electric • Plumbing• Upholstery • Moulding• Final Fit-Out• Laminating

What advice does Elizabeth have for people wanting to join the industry?

Elizabeth recommends that students undertake work experience to gain insight into what different jobs and industries involve. Placements of this kind help students to identify their strengths, areas for improvement and career goals.

There are many different occupations within the automotive industry. Visit www.myfuture.edu.au and use the Automotive Careers Bullseye to select two different occupations and list the tasks someone working in these jobs would be expected to perform.

WORKING IN AVIONICS

2f: Bridget: Air Traffic ControllerWhat is the difference between a Tower Controller and an En-Route Controller?

A Tower Controller controls everything that they can see (e.g. the runway, the airspace above the airport), whereas an En-Route Controller manages everything once the aircraft has departed (the airspace that is outside of the aerodrome area).

What kind of activities do students undertake when training to become an Air Traffic Controller?

When students are training to become Air Traffic Controllers, they participate in practical simulation training and learn theory. Students will also undertake on the job training.

Use www.joboutlook.gov.au and list three qualifications students can undertake to work as an Air Traffic Controller.

• Certificate II in Aeroskills• Bachelor of Aviation (Management)• Could also complete a Diploma of Aviation with Air Services Australia

as mentioned in the video.

What skills do you think are important when working as an Air Traffic Controller? Why?

Air Traffic Controllers need to be problem solvers with strong critical thinking skills. Being able to multitask and communicate effectively are also required, for example, when controlling multiple flights at once.

2g: David: Avionics InstructorList the different types of Avionic Technicians. What do they do?

• Line Technicians – carry out unscheduled maintenance on aircraft• Deeper Level Technicians – work in a hangar doing repairs, scheduled checks and modifications• Bench Level Technicians – repair black box flight recorders within aircraft

2h: Rachel: International Sales and Business Development Manager

What is Vocational Education and Training? (Hint: Visit www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/studentguides/getvet to learn more about VET).

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a program designed to deliver workplace skills and knowledge along with practical experience. Through a VET course, students will learn theory as well as completing on-site learning to gain important industry experience in a real working environment.

What does a Diploma in Aeroskills Avionics qualify Rachel to do? (Hint: Use www.joboutlook.gov.au and the internet to help you)

A Diploma in Aeroskills Avionics makes Rachel a qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers maintain and repair aircraft structures and avionic and mechanical systems. Source: www.joboutlook.gov.au

2i: Mark: Line & Training Check Pilot with Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS)What checks does Mark always complete before he departs for a flight?

Each morning before he departs for a flight, Mark will:

• Receive a text detailing what aircraft he is going to be flying, which nurse will be flying with him, as well as the patient details. He requires this information to calculate the combined weight of passengers so that he can accurately calculate the weight of the plane.

• Before departure, Mark will check weather conditions and the maintenance schedule of the aircraft. Mark always personally checks the aircraft to make sure it is in good condition to fly.

• Once the aircraft doors are closed, Mark contacts the control tower for an airway clearance which allows him to taxi around the airport and line up on the runway ready to take off.

What are the added challenges of flying outside of controlled airspace? What is a black hole landing?

• Some added challenges of flying outside of controlled airspace are that there is no radar control so the pilots implement the “see and avoid technique”. The only resources they have to rely on are their radios and their eyes. When landing, pilots will need to first locate the airstrip and then ensure that it is clear of animals or wildlife before landing the aircraft.

• A black hole landing is when a pilot is landing an aircraft at night. It is called a black hole landing because there is no light from the moon or surrounding communities. All that the pilots can see are very faint lights placed on the runway to assist with depth perception.

What is the difference between an RFDS Pilot and a commercial pilot?

RFDS pilots fly outside of controlled airspaces. RFDS pilots often assist in the care of patients. They may prepare splints, hook up monitors and leads, make preparations in the aircraft, pass equipment to doctors and nurses, take notes, and assist doctors and nurses as required. RFDS pilots will also load and unload patients from planes, as well as providing reassurance to patients.

2k: Mohammed, Francesca & Daniel: Sydney Trains – ElectricalWhat is a substation? (Hint: Use the internet to help you).

A substation is a set of equipment that decreases high voltage electricity into lower voltage electricity so that it can be easily supplied to where it is required.

What skills do you think apprentices gain from changing teams every six months?

Changing teams every six months enables apprentices to build their teamwork and communication skills. Changing teams means that apprentices meet new people and will need to learn new ways to communicate and work productively with different people from various departments. It also enables them to learn from people with a range of different experiences and skills.

What does Mohammed say are the most important qualities he looks for when employing a new apprentice?

The most important quality that Mohammed looks for when employing a new apprentice is motivation and ambition. He looks to employ apprentices who are driven, have a desire to work in the rail environment and those that can work within a team.
