“Freedom of association and collective bargaining” – captured in the UN Global Compact’s third

principle – offers perhaps another illustrative example. In Ethiopia, a large international apparel

company is partnering with an overseas development agency to ensure wider adoption of collective

bargaining in the broader textile sector with the clear objective of improving working conditions and

reducing inequality – in other words, advancing SDG #1, #8 and #9 and related targets.

In this light, the following graphic illustrates some of the primary linkages between the UN Global

Compact’s Ten Principles and the SDGs. It must be emphasized that the graphic is not intended to

capture all connections and relationships; indeed, many principles are profoundly cross-cutting in

nature.12

The UN Global Compact Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals

This graphic illustrates some of the primary linkages between the UN Global Compact Ten Principles and the contribution that these can make towards the achievement of the SDGs. By respecting and supporting universal

principles, UN Global Compact business participants can play an important role in helping to realize the SDGs.

Under the Siemens Integrity Initiative [SII], the UN Global Compact has been working toadvance Anti-Corruption Collective Action (AC CA) efforts at the local level. For the secondfunding round of the SII, the UNGC is currently working on two projects that have startedin July 2015 and will end in 2018:

1. In partnership with the Egyptian Junior Business Association, the UN Global Compact isworking on a project aimed at establishing a multi-stakeholder, business-led IntegrityNetwork in the country. The project will focus on building the capacity of SMEs on Anti-Corruption issues and on creating an inventory of incentives by MNEs for SMEs toimplement robust AC compliance programmes.
